Fall 2016

“LINE CALLS” In Dan’s Court

Terry’s Corner

Our 4th indoor tennis season is about to begin! But before we move forward, let’s retrace our steps. Even without our traditional rainy summer, the club had a successful season!

We have had our third successful summer season! Our goal is to provide an array of programs proven to keep our courts busy! Our Prime Time Tennis Season is here! ACopi Tennis and Sports now offers one of the most successful junior tennis feeder programs in Central Maine. Our accomplishments are directly due to the vision and dedication of our Board of Directors who set the goal, pointed us in the right direction and encouraged all of us to insure the longevity of tennis in our community. We are glad to see so many people back on the courts. We continue to provide you with exciting and challenging programs for all levels of play.

Friday Night Mixers have been popular every week. We had a Tailgate Party with Hot Dogs, Hamburgers and Potato Salad with 24 players and a Summer Salad Triples mixer with salad and rolls and 25 players. We doubled the number of mixer passes we sold.

St. Michael’s brought their summer programs indoors 2 days each week and filled our courts with 40-50 young players. Dan Bence spearheaded the Augusta Rec. summer camp sessions with 20 young juniors. Pickleball has stayed strong thru the summer, with players coming 4 days a week. Some players excelled at Nationals in Florida and in Portland. Congratulations to everyone from this club who put in such a strong showing.

We are proud of our Womens 4.0 Team, captained by Hilary Holm. They made it to districts.

Our President Don Gasink and I went in July to Maine’s first of many Tennis Club gatherings run by USTA. We went with a strong idea about including new players in team events with the focus on FUN. We came away with grant money from USTA to organize and start the ball rolling.

And last but not least, I would like to thank Sherry Norton, another club pro. She has been able to

The Big Hitters’ Scramble is being held on Monday nights. 4.0 players are encouraged to sign up. Wednesdays’ mixed doubles scrambles offer fun and challenge for all 3.5-4.0 players. As Dan mentioned, we offer an Adult Developmental program for 2.5 and 3.0 players focused on fun. Billy Jean King said, “Champions keep playing until they get it right!” Not sure of your level? Ask Dan Veilleux to rate you.

A-Copi isn’t just about court sports. Our tennis lobby is a place for parents to sit and watch their children learn the game of tennis; there are DVDs of famous tennis matches also. We have added a Kids’ Activity Room with ping pong and foosball tables.

maintain Cardio Tennis and Triples through a very warm summer, as well as her other weekend programs and individual lessons. She shows herself to be a true professional at all times.

Do you have a family member or friend you would like to encourage to learn tennis or brush up on skills? We offer Learn to Play Programs. We now have a “Guest Referral Program”, that entitles you as a member to offer that special someone a reduced court fee coupon. There are also 2 courts lined for pickleball. Check out our scheduled times. This racquet sport is one of the fastest growing racquet sports in the country. It attracts all ages and levels and is lots of fun.

Another club pro, AB, assists with Red and Orange Ball; he is also available for private lessons on Sundays.

Now that we have stepped backward a bit, let’s move forward. I cannot wait to see where this season takes us. See our upcoming events in this Newsletter, our pamphlet, on FB and our web page,! Let’s all get on the tennis train together! Chooo…Chooo!

DAN Veilleux, Head Tennis Professional A MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT: Welcome to the fall indoor tennis season at the ACopi Tennis Center. This begins our third full year of operation at our Leighton Road location in Augusta.

Our organization has been so successful that we now are even faced with conflicting requests to use the courts for traditional tennis singles and doubles, continuing instruction by our pros, big hitters and other special groups, triples play which is expanding, pickle ball and other uses. Terry Witham, our manager, and the pros, board and staff are working to balance many differing uses as fairly as possible.

Membership is expanding, and for the past financial year our efforts have been rewarded with strong revenues and increased court usage. We have built up a very good bank balance to assure our enduring presence and maintain a positive cash flow. Our pros are expanding their offerings to members and non-members alike.

As always, we value your membership and feedback on how we are doing. We believe that we can always improve, and your feedback is helpful.

Best regards, Don Gasink

A-Copi Tennis continues to offer traditional tennis, fitness, company team-building and much more. We are serving the community with a team of professionals who are dedicated to providing training, family fun and creating memories.

Game, Set, Match! Looking forward to seeing you on the court!
