Raleigh Central Library Fall 2017 | ARC 500 - Susan Cannon This project was a part of the comprehensive studio, where the goal is to design to construction documents. A major project within this studio was the chunk model, where we took a chunk out of the middle of our building and built a model of it at 1/8” = 1’-0” scale. The chunk model shows structure, HVAC, and materials. My project focuses on a private interior courtyard that allows light into the whole building with curtainwalls all facing into it. The courtyard steps down with the grade of the site and becomes the terraced assembly on the East side. The support spaces are pushed to the South Wall that is against the parking deck. The educational spaces stack above the terraced assembly including classrooms and a maker space. There are reading spaces dispearsed within the stacks to allow easy transition from looking for books to reading. There are a varitey of reading spaces provided as well as collaboration rooms. The exterior material is a polycarbonate system that is translucent but not transparent allowing in light but keeping the views focused towards the interior courtyard.

Design Week Spring 2018 | ARC 503 - David Hill and Andy Fox Team Members: Tyler Kuss and Shuting Wang This 2 week long interdisciplinary project between landscape architecture students and architecture students focused on the Neuse Watershed in North Carolina. Our group was assigned to focus on New Bern in the lower Neuse Watershed. Our groups main goals were to build water resilience, restore ecology and develop community. This was accomplished through restoring the natural wetlands around the town as well as creating living shorelines, re-imagining the 5-points neighborhood, and cutting canals through the town. The canals create a place for flood water to drain to as well as provide a pedestrian friendly walkway through town. The 5-points neighrbohood would be redeveloped as a mixed income neighborhood to foster community between people of different backgrounds. A central park with a community center would be located at the 5-points intersection.

Kent St Affordable Housing Spring 2016 | ARC 402 - Georgia Bizios The main goals for this project are to utilize a variety of units, create a compromise between the number of units and the outdoor space, and to include parking for the residents. The variety of units is accomplished through the design of 3 separate building types: the accessible unit, the 2-bedroom townhouse, and the 3-bedroom apartment. The density of the units increases with the stepping down of the terrain. Each unit has a porch that faces into the courtyard, which is designed for children to play in, while the parents can watch from the sanctity of their porch. Each unit also has a private porch for more quiet occasions. The change in grade is addressed through 2 retaining walls, the first one in between the accessible unit and the townhouse and the second one at the end of the courtyard and the beginning of the parking. The parking is structured underneath the apartment building. There are eight spaces, enough for each unit to have one and the accessible units to park on the street for immediate access. The street to get to the parking is on the side of the church to create a buffer between the church and the community.

Muybridge Study of Movement Fall 2013 | ARC 201 - Matteo Rapallini This project began with the study of the human body and specific movements such as walking, dancing, climbing stairs, or getting into a hammock. These movements were incorporated into a small space, which was pushed and pulled to allow for the movement within it. My small space takes place on a mountainside where you climb stairs that ascend with the mountain. Once inside the open space showcases the expansive mountain view highlighted further by the transparent glass ceiling while the more enclosed rear creates a private space to relax in the hammock.
