VETERANS SANCTUARY

The concept for this building is to design a sanctuary for the veterans in Baltimore City. Natural elements were used, in conjunction with the neighborhood, in an effort to assist with assimilation back into the community after experiencing the traumas of war. Most veterans experience some sort of physical, psychological, or emotional trauma during their deployment that separates them from the community, and makes them feel as though they are no longer part of society. By giving them a sanctuary where they are able to come together with other veterans who understand their struggles, in an environment that is designed to cater to their specific needs, could revolutionize the health of veterans returning from war. The program for this building takes it one step further by inviting the members of the neighborhood to interact with the veterans and assist with their recovery, all while teaching the community how to understand and approach healing veterans. The design of the building utilizes elements found in nature that are familiar to the veterans in order to promote healing and create an atmosphere of safety.
