Appreciating what is truly important in life Since the last OarSport magazine a lot of water has gone under the bridge, including the 2015 Aon Maadi Cup, Aon University Rowing Championships, junior trials and selections, our Annual General Meeting, and the New Zealand elite rowing team have departed our shores for an exciting 2015 international season which will culminate in the 2015 World Rowing Championships that double as the Olympic qualifying regatta.

Personally it has been a challenging few months to say the least. However, amongst the hard times, there have been some exciting opportunities as well.

It was a privilege to be selected and attend the 55th International Olympic Academy (IOA) Session for Young Participants in Olympia, Greece, in May and June, representing New Zealand. I was lucky enough to attend the session with former under-23 rower Finian Scott.

For 12 days Fin and I lived in the spirit of Olympism among hundreds of other young participants from around the globe. The schedule was jam packed, and we were able to visit ancient archaeological sites as well as learn all about Olympism and the Olympic movement. Fin and I join a long illustrious list of representatives from the rowing community who have attended this event over the years, including Nathan Twaddle, Storm Uru and Juliette Drysdale, to name a few.

Unfortunately just prior to this trip to Olympia my family were shocked with the unexpected death of my brother. It’s moments like this that make you re-evaluate and appreciate what is truly important in life. The trip to Olympia gave me a much-needed break from the challenge of losing my sibling. The IOA was not only inspiring but I feel re-invigorated in my work and feel like I have a new spring in my step.

It is important for me to acknowledge and

show my appreciation to Fin in this rowing context. Fin was extremely supportive, and well and truly displayed the Olympic values.

Fin has been an excellent friend to me and he showed respect for my situation and gave me so much strength throughout this tough time.

I couldn’t have thought of a better person to go to Olympia with to represent New Zealand.

Fin, alongside other participants – my new friends – kept my spirits high and made it such an amazing experience.

As I look to the future with a new and different perspective I can only be positive. There is so much to be happy about in my personal life and also in my work. With just over 400 days left until the 2016 Olympic Games, it’s a very exciting time to be involved in sport, not only for New Zealand rowing. As our athletes focus on podium finishes and qualifying the boats for the Olympics, I urge them not to forget the bigger picture and life outside of sport.

Before I sign off – I must thank Rowing New Zealand and our Chief Executive Simon Peterson for the support they have shown over the past few months. To my husband, thank you for being there in my greatest moment of need. I must also acknowledge everyone who sent me messages of support – it certainly helped to know you were thinking of me.

I have just returned to work to pull together this OarSport magazine for you, I hope you enjoy it.

Aon Maadi Cup an exceptional event vigorously contended by schools CONGRATULATIONS ON YET ANOTHER OUTSTANDING AON MAADI REGATTA IN KARAPIRO. WITH 2,155 ATHLETES FROM 120 SCHOOLS COMPETING VIGOROUSLY OVER THE SIX DAYS, WE SAW MANY EXCITING OUTCOMES AND A FEW UPSETS. St Paul’s Collegiate won the Springbok Shield, celebrating the event’s 50 year anniversary. It was the first time they had won it since 2003 and it was their third Shield win in the last 50 years Waikato Diocesan won the Girls U18 Four and took away the Dawn Cup. Ben Watkinson won the Boys U18 single and has gone on to be selected into the men’s single sculls for the junior world championships.

For the third time in a row, Hamilton Boys High won the Maadi Cup. Since 1947 they have won the Shield on ten occasions.

On the final day of competition, New Zealand’s leading rowers paid tribute to legend Sir Don Rowlands in a row-past at Maadi, recognising his

immense contribution to rowing.

We farewelled 53 athletes as they headed overseas for the forthcoming World Rowing Champs in Varese, Italy. This team has many former Maadi Champions in it and we wish them all well for their forthcoming competitions as they prepare for next years Rio Olympics.

Aon continues to be very proud of our 10 year plus relationship with Rowing New Zealand. In that time Aon have contributed in excess of $3 million in sponsorship for Maadi and other associated rowing promotions.

Maadi is always a great time to meet and interact socially with our clients and this year was no exception. We were pleased that our close insurer partner NZI was also on hand to assist us with hospitality.

The Aon team look forward to catching up with you, and particularly our South Island clients, in Twizel next year.

INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE PRESIDENT VISITS ROWING NZ

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach visited New Zealand for two days in May. On his first visit to Aotearoa New Zealand Bach was officially welcomed by Ngati Whatua, members of the New Zealand Olympic Committee and New Zealand IOC members Barry Maister and Barry Kendall at Olympic House in Parnell, Auckland.

Since being elected president of the IOC in September 2013, Bach has been the driving force behind Olympic Agenda 2020, the strategic roadmap for the Olympic Movement. Over his two-day visit he shared his vision for the future of the Olympic Games in meetings with the heads of the New Zealand Olympic Committee, Sport NZ and High Performance Sport NZ, and Minister for Sport and Health the Hon. Dr Jonathan Coleman.

Following the meetings with Olympic representatives and government leaders, Bach addressed national sporting organisations and discussed Olympic Agenda 2020 with Olympic athletes, including rowers Mahe Drysdale, George Bridgewater, Rebecca Scown and Peter Taylor, at an athlete forum in Cambridge.

Bach also gained an insight into New Zealand’s strong sporting system through a visit to two of the nation’s high performance centres, the High Performance Rowing Centre and Avantidrome,

both in Cambridge. Rowing New Zealand was delighted to host Bach at Lake Karapiro, where he saw first-hand how the New Zealand Rowing team

trains on a daily basis, and even had a go on a rowing machine with guidance from Olympic champions Mahe Drysdale and Eric Murray.

RNZ CEO Simon Peterson awarded C K Doig RNZ CEO SIMON PETERSON AWARDED C K DOIG LEADERSHIP AWARDSPORT NEW ZEALAND CELEBRATED EXCELLENCE AND OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN SPORT AND RECREATION IN NEW ZEALAND AT THE ANNUAL SPORT AND RECREATION AWARDS CEREMONY IN AUCKLAND ON 13 APRIL 2015.

Rowing New Zealand CEO Simon Peterson received the prestigious C K Doig Leadership Award, which recognises an executive sport or recreation leader who displays outstanding leadership in relation to their organisation or the sector as a whole.

"Simon has guided Rowing New Zealand through some of its greatest international successes, and has delivered a number of major initiatives in 2014 to ensure rowing retains its cutting edge," says Sport NZ Chief Executive Peter Miskimmin.

“He has been instrumental in extending the high performance rowing programme in Cambridge with a $1.1 million redevelopment and oversaw another highly successful year for the elite programme where nine medals – including six gold medals – were won at the World Championships, the highest number of gold medals ever. At the under-23 World Championships New Zealand won six medals, including three gold medals, to become the highest-ranked country.

“Not a rower himself, Simon has earned the respect of rowers. His strong leadership skills and outstanding record have seen him build a strong platform for the continued success of rowing, a sport which resonates deeply with New Zealanders.”

Other awards presented at the ceremony included Lifetime Achievement awards for Howie Tamati,

Fay Freeman and Arthur Klap. Sport New Zealand also recognised those who volunteer their time to help make sport happen in communities, and Dennis Mroczkowski from North Harbour was announced 2015’s Sport Maker of the Year.

Awards were also presented in Event Excellence to New Zealand Community Trust Association of Intermediate and Middle Schools (AIMS) Games International Sporting Championships; and in Communications Excellence

to Sport Bay of Plenty’s 2014 Communications Programme. Sport Gisborne Tairawhiti was recognised with the award for Community Impact for its ‘Softball Strikes Back’ programme; and Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) was awarded Innovation Excellence for the Dick Smith National Rugby League (NRL) Auckland Nines.

The award for Commercial Partnership went to Yachting NZ and Aon NZ.

Malcolm Iversen

MALCOLM IVERSEN PASSED AWAY ON FRIDAY 10 APRIL AT NORTH SHORE HOSPITAL. Malcolm was a much admired and respected member of the rowing community and was a stalwart of North Shore Rowing Club.

In 1982, when his daughter was attending

Takapuna Grammar, Malcolm approached the headmaster of the time to seek approval to re-establish rowing as one of the school’s sports. Through Malcolm’s efforts, and with the help of Dudley Storey and the late Eric Craies, Takapuna Grammar School rowing

was reformed. Malcolm and his wife Barbara were the coaches for the first few years, and Malcolm was also the club’s patron. Rowing New Zealand sends condolences to his wife Barbara and children Graham, Robyn, Janine and Maxine at this difficult time.

OBITUARY:

Sir Don Rowlands KNZM CBE AM (17 June 1926 - 18 March 2015)

SIR DON ROWLANDS LIVED A FULL AND ACTIVE LIFE, AND WAS A HIGH ACHIEVER IN BOTH ROWING AND BUSINESS. Donald David Rowlands was born on 17 June 1926 and grew up in Owhango as one of five children born to Ruby and Horace Rowlands. His father Horace ran the local sawmill for the Dominion Timber Company and taught him many lessons around quality, hard work and managing people.

Rowlands rowed at the highest level. He was a Rowing New Zealand selector and vicepatron and showed a breadth of vision that transformed the sport in New Zealand. A great leader with a talent for managing people, he was an excellent communicator and listener.

In 1973 Rowlands received his first honour when he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to rowing, and in 1979 was promoted to Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

In 2015 he was appointed an honorary Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the sport of rowing, and became a Knight of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to rowing and business. Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae conducted a private investiture for Sir Don Rowlands on 9 March 2015 in Auckland Hospital.

Rowlands’ outstanding rowing career saw him win nine New Zealand rowing titles between 1949 and 1957. In 1949 he was a member of the West End Rowing Club crew that won the club’s first red-coat (premier title) in the premier eight on Lake Karapiro. He won three premier titles in the men’s eights for West End, and also won the double sculls in 1957

in St George’s colours. He was a top single sculler, winning the New Zealand premier title every year from 1953–1956 for West End, and again in 1957 under St George’s colours. He was also an Australian national champion. In 1972 he coached a West End double which won a premier title.

The West End crew of Donald Rowlands, Donald Adam, Kerry Ashby, Murray Ashby, Bruce Culpan, Thomas Engel, Grahame Jarratt, Edwin Smith and Bill Tinnock were selected as the New Zealand eight for the 1950 Empire Games where they finished a close second, only a foot behind the gold medallists, Australia. Sir Don Rowlands won two medals as a New Zealand representative rower at the British Empire Games, in 1950 and 1954, and in Vancouver in 1954 won gold in the single sculls.

He was the chairman for the organising committee of the World Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro in 1978, and was patron of the event when it returned to New Zealand in 2010. The lead-up to the 1978 World Championships involved 18 months of weekends at Lake Karapiro with an army of volunteers that built facilities which were in use until 2010, when they were upgraded for the 2010 World Championships.

From 1960 to 1977 he was a New Zealand rowing selector.

He selected a number of crews which went on to win Olympic gold, including the men’s coxed four at the 1968 Mexico Olympic Games and the men’s eight at Munich in 1972. He managed the 1962 New Zealand Commonwealth Games rowing team and the 1997 World Championships team.

Rowlands was the vice-patron of Rowing New Zealand (New

Zealand Rowing Association) and a life member. He also served on the World Rowing governing body FISA from 1974 to 1992, where he represented New Zealand and Australia. He was involved in the construction of rowing courses all around the world, including the Olympic courses in both Los Angeles and Sydney. He was the FISA Continental Representative in Oceania from 1974 to 1992, a member of the Events Commission, and an honorary member of Council. He was also a former vice-president of the New Zealand Olympic Committee. He was awarded the Olympic Order Medal in 1982 and the FISA Distinguished Service Medal in 2009. Rowlands has also won two Halberg Awards for leadership and service to sport. Herowingdeath Rowlands’ dedication to business has been far reaching, and he was inducted into the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame in 2014. His journey began with an engineering apprenticeship at McEwans in Auckland. He also worked at

Mason Brothers Engineering where he began his rowing career as part of a business house competition. He also worked in Thames at Charles Judd Ltd before embarking on a 48-year career at Fisher & Paykel, where he held various positions including chief executive and director from 1978 to 2001. He was also the chairman and then director of Mainfreight. He was a director at Hamilton Jet, Progressive Enterprises, Nestle, Henderson Pollard and Champion. He has had many roles such as president of the Auckland and New Zealand Manufacturers Federation; he was also a member of the Sports Foundation, Rotary and the Business Round Table.

Rowing New Zealand extends love and best wishes to his wife Lady Coralie, his son David and his extended family. Don will be greatly missed in the rowing community. Rest in peace, Sir Don Rowlands.

2015 Halberg Junior Disability Games THE HALBERG DISABILITY SPORT FOUNDATION HOSTED THE 2015 HALBERG JUNIOR DISABILITY GAMES FOR THE FIRST TIME, FROM 10–12 APRIL. The national three-day sports competition for physically disabled and visually impaired young people aged eight to 21 took place in Cambridge. More than 100 athletes in 12 regional teams representing Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Canterbury, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, Northland, Otago,

Southland, Taranaki, Waikato and Wellington assembled at St Peter’s School to compete.

The Games are a unique event in New Zealand and give athletes an opportunity to enjoy the thrill of competition and camaraderie and to make new friends.

Participants experience an authentic Games village environment and can try new sports while further pursuing their sporting goals.

A festival-style opening

ceremony kicked off the Games, and athletes proceeded around the Avantidrome in their teams. Paralympic cyclists Paula Tesoireo (who is also an executive board member of the foundation) and Phillipa Gray gave inspirational speeches, while Otago athlete Kiran Dixon read an oath on behalf of all participants and lit an Olympicstyle flame. Halberg Disability Sport Foundation CEO Geoff Burgess announced the Games officially open.

Over 13 sports were in action over the three days, including ambulant football, athletics, blind cricket, paracycling, equestrian, goalball, powerchair football, indoor rowing and swimming.

The 2016 Halberg Junior Disability Games will take place at St Peter’s School, Cambridge from 22 to 24 April 2016.

Annual General Meeting Awards 2015 The New Zealand Rowing Association (Rowing New Zealand) held their Annual General Meeting in Christchurch on Saturday 23 May and a number of awards were presented. Congratulations to all award winners.

Administrator of the Year: David Pullar David was nominated by Petone Rowing Club for establishing a new level of quality in organisation and communication with the club’s members since he was elected to the position of Honorary Secretary. Dave transformed

committee meeting agendas, recording of meeting minutes and reminding administration members of deadlines, and has set new standards for the club.

David is a professional parliamentary secretary and that

of course transfers to the quality of his rowing club secretarial work.

Dave has a full schedule with work but somehow manages to create time to support the Petone Rowing Club.

Service to Sport Award - Southland Rowing Association Ray Cleveland Ray has been a member of Invercargill Rowing Club for over 50 years and has been involved at various levels over that timeframe, rowing competitively from school through to masters.

Ray also competed at the World Masters in 1997, 2001 and 2002.

Volunteer of the Year Warren Blazey WARREN WAS NOMINATED BY CANTERBURY ROWING CLUB FOR HIS VERY ACTIVE ROWING VOLUNTEERING OVER A 59-YEAR PERIOD. Warren has also been heavily involved with Ruataniwha Rowing for nearly 30 years holding roles such as Chief Starter, and he is a regular on the start team at various South Island regattas over the season.

In the 1960s Warren was responsible for boat transport for the Canterbury club and to this day is still involved in delivering school, club, university and provincial boats to where they are needed around the country.

This award backs up the award that Warren received from Christchurch City Council as their 'Volunteer of the Year' in 2014

Ray’s dedication to the sport doesn’t stop at the competition level, as he has also been involved in many projects around the club including using his welding and fabrication skills to fix and make riggers from scratch. He has also put a large amount of time into the construction of the new combined boat shed at the Oreti River, by fitting out boat racks. Ray’s contribution to Southland Rowing Association has been considerable, as he has also assisted at many local events as a starter for 20 years. The local association also recognised him with a Southland Association Service pin last season.

Diane Campbell, Paddy O’Reilly and Joe O’Neill were acknowledged at the Annual General Meeting by being presented with a certificate each to honour the important work they do in the rowing community.

| rowing new zealand awards 2015 SERVICE TO SPORT AWARD - Wellington Rowing Association- Andrew Carr-Smith Andrew was first exposed to rowing through family involvement from the 1990s. His father Gary was involved in administration both on the New Zealand Rowing Council and New Zealand Secondary School Rowing Association (NZSSRA).

Andrew’s involvement in the administration of the sport falls into 3 categories: his work with the NZSSRA, with Wellington Rowing Association (WRA) and with RowIT. From 2005–12 Andrew served

as the NZSSRA executive officer, from 2012–13 as a member, and from 2012–15 as a director. He has also been the NZSSRA representative on the Maadi Cup Race Committee from 2006–15 and was on the race committee for the North Island Secondary School Rowing Championships from 2006–12.

For the Wellington Rowing Association Andrew has been an assistant judge from 2007–11 before stepping up to the role as chief judge from 2011 until the present

Cure have had solid club management with a president who has served for over 30 years. The club is also supported by 3 vice presidents, secretary, treasurer, minute-taker, club captain, vice club captain and committee members. The management team works well together and has the experience and range of skills required to administer the club both on and off the water.

In 2010 after the devastating Canterbury earthquake the Cure Boating Club shed was ruined. They received an insurance payment which allowed them to make temporary repairs in order to continue to use the building while they got plans underway for a new, larger building. The club has dealt with consents and fundraising and the building is estimated to cost around $2 million. To date the club has raised about half of this amount, and is about to lodge building and resource consent applications.

The Cure Boating Club is in an excellent financial position and subscriptions are kept to a minimum as they recognise that many of their rowers are young and the club does not want to place too big a financial burden on the parents.

Cure aims to develop their rowers both on and off the water through

day. In his role as a director of the WRA he provides regatta secretarial services and proffers sound advice on governance matters.

In 2000 Andrew was at the leading edge of IT, setting up the Maadi Cup website.

By 2003 he had created New Zealand’s first online regatta entry system. In 2008 Andrew made sure that all Maadi Cup Regatta results were available online, and by the 2015 Aon Maadi Cup RowIT results had received over 1 million page views.

The club promotes the adage to succeed on the water and to build up a culture in the schools that results in the younger students looking up to the older rowing students and aspiring to emulate or better their achievements. The club has experienced an increase in membership numbers and success at regattas. For a small club, Cure certainly boxes well above its weight - at the recent 2015 Bankstream New Zealand Rowing Championships the club won two golds in the men’s senior eight (composite crew with Nelson) and men’s senior four, a silver was won by the men’s senior coxless quad, and two bronzes were won by the men’s senior coxless pair and men’s senior single.

Cure Boating Club is proud to have produced some elite rowers over the last few years, including Armin Svoboda junior, Evan Kennedy and Alex Kennedy. These three rowers all attended Rangiora High School and rowed successfully for the club. www.rowingnz.kiwi |

Fred Strachan named NZRA Vice Patron FRED STRACHAN WAS NAMED THE NEW ZEALAND ROWING ASSOCIATION VICE PATRON AT THE 2015 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. FRED HAS DEDICATED HIS LIFE TO ROWING AND HIS FIRST INVOLVEMENT CAME IN 1946 WHEN HE BECAME A MEMBER OF NORTH END ROWING CLUB IN DUNEDIN. In 1949 he became the club secretary, moving on to be club captain from 1950–54 and 1963–65, and president from 1961–62. Fred is a Life Member of the North End Rowing Club.

Fred was an Otago Provincial Representative in 1948. He was a delegate from 1950 for many years and president in 1961–62. Fred is a Life Member of the Otago Rowing Association. In 1969 Fred transferred to Christchurch where he worked as the manager of Butterfield’s until 1978.

Fred has also been involved with Avon Rowing Club as a coach. He is an excellent coach and has coached many crews to be New Zealand champions: the coxed pairs in 1973; the coxed four in 1974, 1975, 1976; the men’s eight in 1976; and the coxless fours in 1978 and 1979. Fred is patron of the Avon Rowing Club.

Fred has held many titles within the New Zealand Rowing Association.

From 1964–88 he was a New Zealand selector, including being convenor from 1966–88. He held the office of councillor from 1972–73, vice president twice from 1969–70 and 1980–85, and president from 1985 to 1990. Fred was awarded a Service Award Blazer in 1979 and has been a Life Member of the New Zealand Rowing Association since 1990.

Internationally, Fred was Juge-Arbitre in 1964 at the Tokyo Olympic Games, officiating at World Championships in 1970, 1978 and 1981, and at the Olympic Games in 1968, 1972 and 1976, before retiring in 1988 on reaching the age limit.

In 1952 Fred began coaching school boys from King Edward Technical College, then from Kings’ High School and he currently coaches crews from Otago Boys’ High School. He held the position of secretary of the Otago Secondary School Rowing Association from 1955 to 1969 and chairman in 1985, and he was the Otago representative on the inaugural Executive Committee in 1967 for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Rowing Association.

In 1967 he became a New Zealand Licenced Regatta Umpire No.3.

Among the many awards that Fred has received, the most significant must be the Queen’s Service Medal in 1991 and the Halberg Award – Lifetime Achievement in 2005.

New Zealand Rowing is very proud to award the appointment of Vice Patron to Fred Strachan.

I've been immersed in sports management, administration and coaching for the past seven years so hopefully there's some relevant experience I can bring to the table. Alongside that it's exciting to be involved at Board level, with the world's top rowing nation.

OARSPORT: What changes have you seen in Rowing New Zealand over the years? In 1978, when I was at school, New Zealand hosted the World Champs at Karapiro. Our medal haul was one bronze in the men's eight. And the Maadi Cup that year had 500 entries - all boys. At the most recent world champs NZ won nine medals with six of those gold and there were

2200 entries in the 2015 Aon Maadi Cup. OARSPORT: How do you feel your involvement in the sport will assist you in your role as a board member? It makes it easier to understand the effect board decisions will have on rowers, coaches and clubs. It's important for Boards to have a balance of experience and a direct link into clubs is part of that.

OARSPORT: Tell us something that the rowing community wouldn't know about you? I'm a co-coach, with Doc McDonald, of the Hawke's Bay Senior and Intermediate boys. No surprises there, except that Doc coached me as a boy.

He remains on top of his game and continues to turn out medal winning rowers.

PETONE ROWING CLUB

This issue we head to windy Wellington to focus on Petone Rowing Club. The Petone Rowing Club was formed 115 years ago in 1900 and is situated on the Petone foreshore, Lower Hutt, of the Wellington harbour. Petone rowers are easily identified at rowing regattas as they proudly wear their fluoro-yellow rowing singlets. However, they only donned these colours in the 1980s (before that the club wore gold and black).

Petone has had its fair amount of success both nationally and internationally, with a number of club champions having represented New Zealand at international rowing regattas such as the Empire (Commonwealth) Games, the world championships and Olympic Games.

These include Des Lock, Ian Boserio, Jack McCarten, Pat Abbott, Tim Logan, Mike Benge and Viv Haar. Currently the club has a number of members selected to the New Zealand rowing team, including ErinMonique O’Brien (formerly Shelton) in the women’s quad, Axel Dickinson as an elite reserve, Beth Ross in the under-23 team, Ella Pudney in the U21 Trans-Tasman team, and Ruby Willis in the under-18 team.

The 2013 Bankstream NZ Rowing Championships were the most successful for the club since the 1970s: they won five medals.

Given the success the club has experienced at home and abroad, it was not surprising to see Petone Rowing Club named Rowing New Zealand’s Club of the Year at the 2014 annual general meeting. Petone received the honour for a number of reasons, including providing a wide

At the 2015 Bankstream New Zealand Rowing Championships Petone took a swag of medals home across Cook Strait - the club's national squad of 22 athletes won a total of 18 medals - six gold, eight silver and four bronze.

Q: HOW IS YOUR CLUB COMMUNITY MADE UP? A: We have a very strong volunteer committee that tries to be as engaged as possible with our members.

Membership is made up of school-aged rowers, university students, young professionals and masters rowers (who are young parents, professionals and grandparents). Our youngest member is 15 and our oldest is 65 years old.

Q: HOW DOES YOUR ROWING CLUB GET INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY?

range of offerings for members, from a learnto-row programme to novice, club, senior and masters’ rowing. They also upgraded facilities and equipment at the club, and took immense pride in their club history and recent results.

A: We get involved in the community in a number of ways. We are actively involved in the Petone Fair and Petone Winter Carnival, and support the Crazy Man event. We are looking at ways to develop outreach programmes - our president Caroline Robertson has spent some time rowing for Lincon Park Boat Club in Chicago and has seen first-hand the effectiveness of outreach programmes for at-risk youth, survivors of breast cancer, and adaptive rowing. This coming season we are going to start talking more about how the

club could help other groups in the wider community.

Q: HOW DOES YOUR CLUB GO ABOUT FUNDRAISING? A: This past season we’ve taken a different approach to fundraising. Each squad was responsible for hosting a fundraising movie night at the Petone Lighthouse. All of the funds went towards subsidising the costs of attending nationals. Each of these movie nights raises $1300–1500. Our masters squad has also hosted a bingo night which was very successful.

Q: YOUR CLUB HAS BUILT STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER CLUBS IN THE WELLINGTON REGION, PUTTING TOGETHER COMPOSITE CREWS. HOW HAS THIS HELPED YOUR CLUB? A: Composite crews are a great way of sharing resources. Our senior/club men’s and women’s squads had a competitive coxed four but there weren’t enough athletes to make a competitive eight. By combining with other clubs (like Aramaho/Whanganui) we were able to create stronger crews.

Q: HOW DO YOUR CREWS COPE WITH THE WINDY WEATHER IN WELLINGTON? A: We have an excellent gym, with free weights and cardio machines.

A lot of time is spent in the gym.

We encourage our athletes to work hard during their land training. We have internal club competitions.

Axel Dickinson introduced an erg score board with a number of different challenges on it, which keeps people motivated to beat their PBs. We also try to have a number of club days during the season. These are a great opportunity for all of our members to train together.

We will highlight one club in each OarSport magazine, we hope it will give you an idea of what it is like being a member of a rowing club in different parts of the country.

Q: YOUR CLUB HAS BEEN ABLE TO PROVIDE NEW FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT FOR YOUR MEMBERS – HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO DO THIS? A: We’ve got a number of members that are willing to roll their sleeves up and help out around the club.

The men’s squad recently painted the gym, laid new rubber flooring and installed new shelving. The masters’ squad renovated our members’ room, and have recently installed a new trophy cabinet. This season we sold PRC supporters t-shirts which funded the building maintenance. These t-shirts were kindly donated by SPACEWISE and helped us raise $5000.

Q: WHAT CHALLENGES DOES YOUR ROWING CLUB HAVE? A: This coming season we are losing a number of our senior/club rowers who will be heading off on their OEs. The next 1–2 seasons will be rebuilding for the club, and we will need to focus on recruiting novice rowers. We have a very good coaching team, and there is a buzz around the club, but for the club to do well, you’ve got to appreciate that there are peaks and dips in membership. We will be working hard to get our novices up to scratch and our club rowers as competitive as possible.

Q: HOW PROUD WAS YOUR CLUB TO BE NAMED THE ROWING NZ 2014 CLUB OF THE YEAR? A: Being named Club of the Year was a very proud moment for PRC. It was the icing on the cake of a very successful season. We lost our club president (Russell Baxter) in October 2013 to liver cancer. Russell would have been immensely proud of what we have achieved.

Our members, committee, coaches, and in particular our club captain Paddy O’Reilly have worked hard to lift the club up to the spotlight. We all know we’re part of something special at PRC! Q: YOUR CLUB IS VERY PROUD OF ITS HISTORY. HOW HAVE YOU GONE ABOUT ACKNOWLEDGING THE PAST MEMBERS AND WHY DO YOU BELIEVE THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR PRC? A: We’ve reintroduced updating our NZ representative honours board. This hadn’t been updated since the 1980s. We name new boats in honour of past and present members who have made a significant contribution to the administrative side of the club.

We have a formal prize-giving and have introduced a number of new trophies, like the Russell Baxter Memorial Cup (for the advancement of PRC), and the Parliament Cup (most successful masters rower). We are looking into a supplier for our club blazers and would like to make these available to all past and present members. We have regular club nights - like our pizza night, where our NZ reps come and share their experiences with past and present members.

Q: ANY LAST WORDS FOR YOUR CLUB? A: PRC members are proud. They recognise they are part of something special. Rowing is a unique sport that resonates deeply with people because it’s not just a game, its about what you can achieve as an individual, and more importantly, what you can achieve when you are part of a team.

MIKE STANLEY - vibrant and passionate sportsman Mike Stanley has proved an influential figure in New Zealand rowing for the past four decades. Steve Landells speaks to the man whose passion for the sport remains vibrant.

Mike Stanley’s CV is both long and considerable. From former world championship winning rower, teacher, Rowing New Zealand CEO and board member, to current New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) president/ chairman and AUT Millennium Institute CEO, his background and achievements are impressive.

Yet his fundamental philosophy in any of his roles bears the simple and straightforward hallmarks that served him so well in the boat: work with talented, motivated people for a common cause. Or, as Mike himself succinctly articulates, “Find good people, give them the opportunity to contribute and you can achieve incredible things together.”

Born in Lower Hutt, Mike was introduced to rowing while attending Auckland’s Westlake Boys’ High School shortly after the 1972 Munich Olympics.

An accomplished all-round sportsman and skipper of the first XV rugby team, he quickly made his mark in rowing and, after winning selection for the New Zealand Under-23 squad in 1976, the sport became his chief focus. It was at that time he met his future wife Jane, a New Zealand rowing representative 1975–83 and herself a highly respected coach.

Stanley enjoyed a memorable career, securing national titles and featuring in New Zealand's triumphant gold medal-winning eights crew at the 1982 and 1983 world championships. "A great bunch of highly talented guys and a wonderful coach in Harry Mahon. They were great years."

However, he and the crew were to be bitterly disappointed when their highly fancied crew underperformed at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, finishing fourth.

After formally retiring from rowing in 1986 and enjoying a short stint overseas, he returned to New Zealand for a spell as sports co-ordinator at Westlake Boys’ High School, where he successfully coached the school to two wins in the Springbok Shield (boys under-18 coxed four) and a number of close shaves in the Maadi Cup (boys under-18 eight).

Never afraid of a challenge, he successfully applied for the position as Rowing New Zealand’s CEO in 1993 – taking on the role at an organisation that was very different to the slick and professional outfit we see today based out of Lake Karapiro.

“We had no office and maybe one or two paid employees, who were based down in Hamilton and involved in coach development,” admits Mike.

“It was very much a one-man management band until I had the great good fortune to employ Lisa Holton, who is still with Rowing New Zealand today.”

The challenge was huge. With a high-performance system well past its sell-by date he recognised an urgent need for change. He realised that to be more consistently successful, elite rowers had to train full time and be based out of one centre for 12 months of the year. At that time this approach presented a seismic shift in attitude for the New Zealand rowing community.

| blast from the past - mike stanley the athletes,” he admits. “Back then the high-performance centre was a shed with a bare concrete floor and no strength and conditioning facilities. It was difficult to ask athletes to commit themselves to being the best in the world without the environment to meet that.”

Mike insists he should not take any credit for the success that Rowing New Zealand enjoys today (a point he emphasised several times in the interview), and says that with the benefit of hindsight he believes Rowing New Zealand could have moved with “more confidence, more quickly” during his ten-year tenure as CEO, but were limited by resources.

Yet he says “some of the mistakes and learnings out of that era” helped form some of the future decisions made by Rowing New Zealand. He looks back with pride on the part he played in modernising the high-performance programme, strengthening the sport’s pathways and enhancing the sport’s governance. “Some of the people who were there at the start of the process are still in key roles in Rowing New Zealand today and doing a great job.”

The sport also underwent another major change during this decade-long period when it became less male- and adult-dominated. “More women were becoming involved in the sport and it was becoming progressively younger,” he explains. “We see a continuation of that transition today where we now see over 2000 rowers at the Aon Maadi

Cup regatta and 500–600 rowers at nationals. In my day it wasn’t quite the reverse, but close to it.”

After also developing a new set of skills working in corporate affairs for electricity company Mighty River Power, in 2003 Mike took up his current position as CEO at the AUT Millennium Institute on Auckland’s North Shore.

Less a sports position and more of a business role in which he manages stakeholders, sponsorship requirements and political relationships, he has overseen a huge growth in the annual turnover of the $85 million facility, which is now the National High Performance Training Centre.

Yet many years down the line rowing still remains close to Mike's heart. He is president at North Shore Rowing Club and works as a rowing coach at his old school, Westlake Boys’ High, enthused 'by working with motivated kids and helping them grow'.

He has also been a long-time board member of the New Zealand Olympic Committee and is currently serving as its president.

It is a role Mike, now aged 57, cares passionately about and one where he believes he can make a difference.

“For a sport to be healthy, good decisions need to be made for the right reasons, and I think people from a sporting background should be contributing to that process,” he explains. “The NZOC has a pivotal role to play when it comes to Games

So after more than 40 years immersed in the sport of rowing as athlete, coach and administrator of some distinction, how does Mike view the success and health of rowing in New Zealand today?

“It is amazing at all levels,” he explains.

"We've developed a great community of people who have a common vision," he explains. "We use the term 'be the best you can be' and that can resonate with a child of five or the leading high performance athlete. The culture is very good and I think people feel that. It is both an aspirational and an inclusive culture."

In his role as World Masters Games 2017 ambassador, Nathan Twaddle wants to see the rowing community come out in force to compete at the stellar multisport event.

Steve Landells speaks to the former world champion rower about why masters rowing and the World Masters Games here in New Zealand should be fully embraced.

Nathan has unquestionably benefited from the general fitness, but he believes the social element is a big draw card.

It was only four years ago when the 2005 world coxless pair champion and 2008 Olympic coxless pair bronze medallist retired from elite rowing.

“A lot of guys who I used to row with are now involved in masters rowing,” Nathan explains. “I always intended to get back in the boat and it is great to catch up with them. Even though the distance is only 1000m (the standard distance for masters rowing) it still hurts!”

Performance Sport New Zealand, he describes himself today as a “fair weather rower”, who carries out most of his fitness work on the rowing machine at home and is often only out on the water once a fortnight while in Auckland.

A former Halberg Award winner (Nathan won the 2005 Team of the Year award alongside his former coxless pair partner George Bridgewater), he has now also competed in a couple of regattas as a masters rower, including the 2014 Bankstream New Zealand Masters Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro last year, an experience he relished both on and off the water.

“It was fantastic,” admits Nathan.

Now it’s just about survival.”

Recently appointed an ambassador for the World Masters Games 2017, Nathan feels privileged to carry out the role and hopes to represent the attractiveness of the Games to both the New Zealand and overseas rowing communities.

Yes, there is the same camaraderie as a non-masters regatta and you are out to do your best, but it is without the pressure and angst of desperately chasing that victory.”

The man behind rowIT

Andrew Carr-Smith is the creator of the hugely popular online entry and results website rowit.co.nz.

Steve Landells chats to the man behind the site, which has become such a crucial and valued resource for the New Zealand rowing community.

Standing at 1.94m tall, boasting three rowing siblings and with a day job immersed in the sport, Andrew Carr-Smith accepts “the irony” of never having sat in a boat.

Yet the founder and director of rowit.co.nz, who declined the chance to row in his teenage years because he was far from keen on the early mornings, has more than given back to the sport thanks to a combination of his deeprooted rowing knowledge, passion for IT and boundless enthusiasm.

Rowing in New Zealand owes him a debt of gratitude.

Andrew’s connection to rowing can be traced back to his seventh-form year when legendary coach Noel Lynch – a former vice-president of New Zealand Rowing – moved in next door to the Carr-Smith’s family home in the Wellington suburb of Khandallah.

Lynch had formerly coached Carr-Smith’s

uncle, Olympian John Gibbons, and upon making his formal introductions he quickly switched the conversation to rowing when he saw the height of the Carr-Smith clan, who were all well above average height for their age. Andrew’s two sisters and brother, David, went on to row, the latter representing New Zealand at junior level. His father, Garry, also become involved in the sport, and found himself volunteered for the role of secretary of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Rowing Association (NZSSRA).

With his family now wedded closely to the sport, Andrew later also formed an association, initially through his passion for computers and IT. “At the time the entry system (for the NZSSRA) events was done by paper and fax and I could see that it was causing him (Garry) a lot of headaches,” admits Andrew. “Some entries received would be illegible or would

| andrew carr-smith make no sense. He’d take entries for, say, the boys under-17 pair and the entry would be an all-girl crew for a four. So I offered to put together an online system for doing entries and that’s how I first became involved.”

With his online entry system proving increasingly popular at Aon Maadi Cup and Aon North Island and South Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships, he was later to receive approaches from clubs keen to replicate the system.

Curious to develop this further and also intrigued to put together a resource to collate an extensive record of rowing results, which had previously not existed, Andrew quit his job as a lawyer and took the plunge into the world of website creation.

The company rowIT Ltd was formed in January 2007 and the website went live later that year in time for the new season – initially to chiefly the Wellington-based rowing community before quickly expanding across the country.

"One of my colleagues bet me $400 I wouldn't quit my job and with that incentive and people asking about making a commercial go of online entry, I thought I'll do it!" adds Andrew, now aged 42.

In the early days he faced several “impediments” to developing the site.

Most seriously, around 18 months after launch date, Rowing New Zealand decided to change its website service providers and opted to try and create an alternative to Andrew’s system.

It proved a big potential threat to rowIT but Rowing New Zealand later decided to give up that attempt and is now a strong supporter of clubs’ preference to use the reliable and trusted rowit.co.nz website.

Working on the site 10–12 hours per day, five and a half to six days per week, Andrew, who admits his IT skills are self-taught, focuses on a range of areas from technical development and maintenance to customer supportbased queries from the wider New Zealand rowing community.

Yet the world of IT never stands still and over the past couple of years has faced some “big challenges”, including the proliferation of web traffic on mobile devices, which has increased from around 20 per cent of traffic to 60–70 per cent.

"I had to redevelop the framework so that it (the site) can be more mobile-friendly," explains Andrew."Stage one of the process has now been completed but I know I need to do more work over the winter months to tidy it up and get it to look sharper on a mobile device."

The other area Andrew needed to improve was the site’s capacity to cope with the sheer amount of traffic it receives during the big regattas. During the 2014 Aon Maadi Cup the site was “overwhelmed” but rowIT has now shifted to the cloud and a new hosting service provider, a switch that should help it cope much better with the demands.

After eight years running rowIT he views the growth

of video footage and GPS coverage as exciting possible features for the future of the site, and also hopes the site will further expand to hit “a few gaps” in online entries and results for small regattas and in parts of the South Island.

Yet whatever the future of rowIT, he is immensely proud of his efforts with the site, which he describes as “a labour of love”.

So after almost two decades involved in the sport, has he finally grown to love rowing?

“Absolutely. I like the fact it is very much a sport of skill,” admits Andrew, who is also chief judge for Wellington regattas and a board member of both the Wellington Rowing Association and NZSSRA. “It has challenges for all levels.

If you persist the sport can really help you develop and grow,” he adds.

"I'm really happy with it," says Andrew, who acknowledges his wife Jane is accepting of her role as a rowing widow. "The website has reached a point where if you want to find out what is going on in New Zealand rowing, rowIT is the place to go." www.rowingnz.kiwi |

| jenkins brothers It is hard to imagine now, given the Jenkins brothers’ success and whole-hearted dedication to rowing, that their connection with the sport started by sheer fluke.

Oldest sibling Lenny was accompanying his mother on a shopping trip to the local Whakatane supermarket when the then 12-year-old was approached by an acquaintance of his mother’s in the store car park.

Impressed by the physical stature of the youngster, the man asked Lenny his height (which was six foot two inches at the time) and shoe size (which was size 14 at the time) before inquiring,

"Have you ever considered rowing?"......

He hadn’t, but within a week he enjoyed his first on-water session. That man was Graham Watt – senior club coach at Whakatane Rowing Club and Rowing New Zealand 2015 Junior Coach of the Year. He would go on to be not only Lenny’s mentor and “inspiration” but that of his two younger siblings by three years – twins Elliott and Finn.

student secured a silver medal at the Aon North Island Secondary School Championships, but Lenny’s maiden Aon Maadi Cup experience later that year proved a chastening experience.

“We finished fourth by half a canvas in the under-15 double and then sixth in the B final of the quad,” he recalls. “We got smashed. It was very demoralising and my first thoughts were, I never want to turn up at an event like this again and feel so inadequate.”

Thankfully, within a week Lenny returned to the sport refreshed and rejuvenated. His involvement had also crucially managed to pique the interest of Finn and Elliott.

“It was good for us because we had a season supporting Lenny at the regattas and we could see the fun and enjoyment the rowers got out of it,” explains Finn. “That made us really keen and straight away (after starting the sport) we loved it.”

It has been some journey.

Initially excited more by the boot camp-style training rather than on-water experience, Lenny admitted rowing was “not love at first sight” but “consistently being told I could be good helped motivate me”.

Under the coaching of Watt and his assistant, Matt Hill, the three siblings quickly started to thrive. Training up to 11 times a week and rising each day at 5am, the three brothers have developed under what Lenny jokes is Watt’s “sadistic training”. They all reached a perfect peak at the 2015 Aon Maadi Cup.

Another component to their success has been the intense sibling rivalry between the teenagers.

Elliott admits of his relationship with his non-identical twin, Finn: “We always try to beat each other in training.” Meanwhile, the twins admit watching Lenny train has been a “huge motivation” and both “strive to be as good as him”.

Yet the Jenkins clan could not have achieved their level of success without the input of fellow Whakatane High School scullers David Beukes and Matt Butler, alongside cox Bleyne Heberley – who have also played a critical role.

“The coaching support and attitude of the crew have allowed us to push ourselves,”

explains Lenny. “There are only five boys rowing at the school but we are all super-close and really good friends. That makes training really special. The 2km warm-ups are often like an actual 2km race. No-one ever takes it as a warm up."

“We hoped we would be in the top four of most our races, but we never thought we would win every race,” adds Lenny, who says an important part of their preparation was racing at the 2015 Bankstream New Zealand Championships the previous month. “The most satisfying win was probably the under-18 quad. This was special because Tom Reid (a former multiple-winning national champion) who has been a big part of our club for the last 35 years was very sick and we wanted to show him we could do it. When we got off the water he was in tears.”

Since the Aon Maadi Cup regatta, Lenny has earned a spot on the New Zealand junior team as part of the men’s quadruple sculls heading to the World Junior Championships in Rio in August, with younger brothers Elliot and Finn hoping one day to also make that squad.

The boys’ long-term goals are predictably to make New Zealand teams for the Olympic Games and World Championships. Yet another more pressing problem is how do mum and dad manage to feed three very hungry scullers?

“Last year our supermarket bill for the year was $26,000 and that wasn’t all the food we bought,” says mother, Mia. “They are often full after dinner, but within about half-an-hour they are looking in the fridge for more food to eat.”

Dad, Mark, adds: “Last year they sent a letter to Sanitarium with 13 empty boxes of Weet-Bix next to the Trevor Coker Shield they won last year (in the under18 men’s quad at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Rowing Championships regatta). Two weeks later they (Sanitarium) sent about 12 boxes of Weet-Bix through.

The boys are definitely powered by Weet-Bix.”

ILLS AND CHILLS - HOW TO AVOID THEM Winter has arrived and it is timely to consider the issue of winter illnesses.

Although most rowing training is off the water at this time of year, there are still some early morning sessions in the cold weather that can make us vulnerable to seasonal illnesses.

Most winter illnesses involve the respiratory tract. They are usually mild, with a cough and a runny nose predominating - this is the common cold. If there is significant muscle ache and the person is bedbound, then they probably have influenza (the flu). If the athlete has sinus pain and a thick yellow or green discharge, then they could have sinusitis and need antibiotic treatment. The same applies to people who are coughing up thick sputum; this probably represents a chest infection.

Whilst most of these are viral, a certain percentage are bacterial and, again, will require antibiotic treatment. Doctors these days often prescribe a ‘standby’ prescription, which is only filled if the person develops symptoms suggestive of bacterial infection.

This is preferable to indiscriminate use of antibiotics in the community.

What about Vitamin C? This became popular in the 1970s after its use was advocated by Linus Pauling, Nobel Prize-winner in Chemistry. However, many studies since then have shown that high dose Vitamin C (also known as ascorbic acid) has minimal impact in preventing the common cold. It can reduce the duration of illness by about 8% in adults and 14% in children. A diet high in fruit and vegetables provides us with the required amounts of vitamin C. The Ministries of Health in Australia and New Zealand have developed recommended intakes of essential nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals.

Prevention is always better than cure, so how should we best go about preventing these illnesses?

Firstly, try and avoid going directly from a very warm to a very cold environment, as the body sometimes has difficulty adjusting to the rapid change in temperature. Secondly, try and dress up in several layers of clothing.

Each layer traps air between it and the next, and this can help protect the body against temperature extremes. The best intervention is hand washing, as the cold virus (a rhinovirus) is spread via hand-to-hand contact.

SUPPLEMENTATION MAY HELP WITH THE ATHLETE'S IMMUNE SYSTEM.

Zinc is a trace mineral needed in small amounts by our bodies. Zinc deficiency can cause loss of appetite, poor growth, loss of hair, a poorly functioning immune system (leading to constant illness), poor wound healing and changes in taste sensation. Studies with children show that the duration of the common cold can be reduced by 50% with zinc supplementation. These data can probably be extrapolated to adults, according to the experts.

The recommended daily intake of zinc is 8 mg for women and 14 mg for men (with an upper limit of 40 mg of zinc per day)

Studies have shown that daily probiotic consumption might help prevent athletes catching colds during training and competition. Athletes drinking a probiotic drink (e.g. Yakult) experience fewer symptoms of the common cold than athletes drinking a placebo (66% versus 90%). The number of common colds experienced was 50% lower in the probiotic drinkers. Probiotic foods are: sauerkraut, kefir, miso, tempeh, kimchi, fermented cheese (e.g. Swiss, parmesan, Gouda), and probiotic yoghurts. The above study looked at the effects of the probiotic drink Yakult.

People who have an active infection should not train heavily while they have symptoms. If their symptoms are above the neck, they can do some light recovery workouts.

What influences athletes decisions to drop out of school rowing in NZ ?

Last year a study was undertaken within New Zealand to understand why teenagers drop out of high school rowing. To be involved in this study, rowers must have rowed for at least two seasons but failed to complete their under-18 season. This criteria was chosen to capture rowers who had invested time in the sport but dropped out before finishing school. Rowers from a range of co-ed and single-sex boys and girls schools were interviewed and the results analysed in terms of different forms of motivation.

In particular, the analysis of interviews investigated three requirements to maintain motivation in the sport: competence, autonomy and relatedness. Competence is the need to feel good at your sport; autonomy is the need to feel in control of your performance; and relatedness is the need to feel part of the team. Below is a summary of the main themes revealed in the study with rowers’ accompanying quotes.

The interviews were based around three themes: ¥ Why we row ¥ The influence of the coach ¥ Teenagers and lightweight rowing.

WHY WE ROW

When asked “What did you enjoy about rowing?” all participants mentioned friendship and camaraderie: “I enjoyed making new friends there because it was kind of like a big family … everyone just gets along.”

They also enjoyed having the opportunity to train and be friends with older and younger rowers, a factor that makes rowing stand out from other sports. The opportunity to act as a role model and show leadership was perceived to be very positive: “Even though we were all different age groups you would always work together. You could look up to them, which was different from, say, the first XV rugby team. These guys you’re actually training with, you’re around them all the time, there’s definitely a rower you can look up to.”

All of the participants also spoke with excitement when discussing the feel of the boat’s movement and the joy of rowing: “It was sort of an energy rush I guess, it felt really good to be out there on the water, it was something that I really enjoyed. It was just pure love of being on the water, the feeling … was just amazing, it was a sort of a kick. I just loved it and kept on doing it.”

| aut research on rowing All the rowers identified their reasons for being there. Unfortunately, these did not always match the goals of the coach or the school:

The way coaches communicated and interacted with the rowers following poor performances was also noticed by the rowers:

“I was in high school, rowing, because I wanted to do a sport.

Obviously you don’t get into rowing and train eight times a week [if] you’re not that motivated, but it wasn’t exactly the end of the world if I didn’t come out of Maadi with three gold medals. I was just there personally because I wanted to get fit, I liked the guys I was rowing with and I enjoyed what I was doing.”

"Usually when we did well in regattas they would come and talk to us and be really happy, and they would also give us a few things that we could do better. But then when we would do badly they would just not even talk to us. They would just be kind of distant, and then if they did talk to us they would just say 'oh what happened' and they wouldn't be very happy about it.

They would just not want to talk to us."

“Each rower has a different goal – whether they want to get into an A-final or get a medal or just to have fun, you know – and I think the coaches definitely lost sight of that. To them it was only about medals and not about the rowers’ own personal satisfaction."

All of the rowers interviewed said they would row again, or that they wanted to continue rowing at school but chose not to. Each had different reasons for this, such as a clash with another sport, other rowers dropping out which meant they had no-one to row with, or being told they were not good enough to continue. Feeling part of something and having a sense of relatedness is important to this age group, and this lack of belonging was a big factor in these rowers dropping out.

"I... weighed out all the positives and negatives and what I was going to do this season, what crews I would be rowing in... So I was just deciding what crew I'd go for, where would I fit in, instead of just being left on the side, ninth man for the season, which I wouldn't want to waste a summer for. Thats what I was deciding about: there wasn't a crew I was definitely going to go for or be in so, yeah, I didn't see a place to be."

THE INFLUENCE OF THE COACH Participants’ responses supported other research that refers to the importance of the coach in influencing the rower’s experience. In this New Zealand research, the rowers also acknowledged that people learn in different ways and at different rates, so allowing people to develop over time was important to them. They often felt the coaches were not interested in their personal development but were focused more on the current top crew:

"If you're in the second crew, you're doing the workout without a coach beside you, so the gap grows. The other guys are getting constant coaching, improving, whereas second-tier guys [are] just training - but it's not as effective, so the gap grows, you get left behind a bit."

Communication between the coach and rowers and among the coaching team was identified as important, particularly around crew selection:

"[The coach] would just make these brash decisions [and] no-one would have any clue where they were coming from - about crews and who was in what crew.

I think things would be a lot better if coaches just talked to the rowers about why they were putting the rowers in this configuration, or why they weren't putting this crew into this regatta, because we were just left in the dark about a lot of things."

COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE COACH AND ROWERS AND AMONG THE COACHING TEAM WAS IDENTIFIED AS IMPORTANT, PARTICULARLY AROUND CREW SELECTION

TEENAGERS AND LIGHTWEIGHT ROWING It was never the intention of the study to investigate lightweight rowing, however it became an important area of discussion as the study progressed, and as the participants revealed more information. This area requires further attention, particularly due to the health concerns raised by some participants.

For example:

“

I wanted to do rowing again for my last season, but my mum and my doctor wouldn’t let me row lightweight because it was too unhealthy to do it again.”

Concerns were also expressed by the non-lightweight rowers about the behaviours of their team mates towards weight loss. They discussed the lengths the rowers would go to in order to achieve the correct weight and the pressure they were under:

CONCLUSION THE AIM OF THIS STUDY WAS TO GAIN A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHY ROWING TENDS TO EXPERIENCE HIGH RATES OF DROP-OUT AT THE SECONDARY SCHOOL LEVEL. At the start of the study we expected reasons for dropout to conform to commonly held perceptions – that teenagers withdraw from rowing due to financial cost, early mornings, and the commitment required. It was clear that all participants initially had a love for the sport, particularly enjoying the family environment created in the sport.

However, factors such as the influence of the coach, the pressures associated with being a lightweight rower, and no longer feeling a ‘part of the team’, are areas worthy of further research.

The results of this study provide greater insight into factors that contribute to athlete drop-out, and may assist rowing schools and coaches to create sporting environments that better meet the needs of adolescent rowers.

I don’t think it was all good for them because they did have a lot of pressure put on them to become lightweight, and it’s not very healthy to make teenage girls obsess over their weight. That’s sort of a recipe for disaster.”

“

A few of them just got under the bracket but that was because they were not eating, or [were] doing sweat runs where they just run and don’t eat … It wasn’t very healthy but they did it just so they could race in the four.”

Between the four lightweight girls I think the one who was naturally lightweight was just sick of the dieting and having to be around it.”

New Zealand Junior Rowing Team to test Rio Olympic course

22 athletes were named as part of a squad of young New Zealand rowers to take part in the 2015 World Rowing Junior Championships being held in Rio de Janiero, Brazil from 6 to 9 August.

The junior rowing regatta will also serve as a test event for the 2016 Olympic Games organisers just one year out from the opening of the Rio Games.

The junior team commenced training at Lake Karapiro at the Rowing New Zealand High Performance Centre for eight weeks from 7 June and depart on 31 July for Rio for pre competition training prior to the World Junior Rowing Championships.

Fantastic international competition converges on Waikato in September as university crews from Harvard, Cambridge, Sydney and Melbourne compete against their Waikato hosts.

The University of Waikato welcomes back top international varsity crews from across the globe for this year’s Gallagher Great Race.

Sponsored by local business icon Gallagher since its inception, the Gallagher Great Race is now in its 14th year. It is superb world-class river racing

action on a highly technical course.

This year is no different, and it’s heating up to be yet another great spectacle as the eights are challenged on the 3.8km course in a three boat upstream race – the only one of its kind.

Navigating and handling the extremely strong, unpredictable currents of the

Waikato River is not as easy as it looks – with oar clashes, a bridge crash and last year’s Waikato’s three seat, Richard Power, ejected from the boat, it’s certainly entertaining viewing.

Come on out and show your support for this fantastic free local event.

WAIKATO’S COMPETITION:

Harvard University - Crimson In the States, rowing at varsity level began in 1852 with the first intercollegiate athletic event, The YaleHarvard Regatta. This varsity four-mile event has been held every year since (except during wartime) and is the longest crew race regularly rowed in North America. Its only peer is the even older and longer Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race (4¼ miles). To date there have been 94 wins to Harvard’s varsity crew, including the last six races (Yale 54 wins).

It is Harvard University’s third time taking part in the Gallagher Great Race, finishing a close runner up to the University of Waikato in both 2007 and 2014. With no wins to their name thus far, they’ll be out to prove a point.

Cambridge University – Blues The annual Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge on the Thames was established back in 1829, and is the second oldest inter-university sport in the world. Cambridge has won the race 81 times and Oxford 79 times, with one dead heat. In recent years Oxford has had consistent back-to-back success, meaning Cambridge will be hungry for a win Down Under.

Cambridge was here for the first Great Race in 2002 and comes to compete in the NZ event every two years. From seven events, they have won three. Although the 6.8km downstream Thames course is longer than the Gallagher Great Race; the upstream element is unique to the Waikato event.

Sydney University Boat Club - SUBC Established in 1860, the Sydney University Boat Club is one of the oldest rowing clubs in the country.

The club competes as a university at the Club, State and National Championships and includes members of the Australian squad. Rivalry is high between its compatriot Melbourne, with their annual Boat Race hosted between both cities, the crews’ skills are tested on the Yarra or the Harbour depending on who is hosting it. From four occasions, Sydney’s women’s crew is still on the hunt for a win. Here in New Zealand, of six outings against Waikato women, Sydney has triumphed just once.

Melbourne University Boat Club - MUBC Established in 1859, the Melbourne University Boat Club is the oldest rowing club in Australia and is in the heart of Melbourne on the Yarra River. Melbourne has a long and successful history at University, State, National and International levels.

There’s an ongoing annual battle between Sydney and Melbourne universities with the current scorecard sitting in Melbourne’s favour.

This will be Melbourne University’s rematch after competing in the Gallagher Great Race last year.

On this side of the ditch, the Melbourne women have competed six times, taking out one win.

With the visitors competing at the Australian University Championships in lateSeptember, they’ll be bringing their A game to the Waikato women.

SCHOOL COACH SURVEY FEEDBACK Over the last two seasons we have been gathering feedback from coaches around the country. This feedback gives us a clearer picture of what the Aon Maadi Cup means to you.

This yearÕs Aon Maadi Cup was the largest ever held and with the sport continuing to develop across the country our event needs to be carefully managed.

We want to maintain the wonderful experience the rowers enjoy and the spectacle that Maadi creates, but also ensure the regatta doesnÕt grow beyond its means.

In 2014 we had 93 responses to our survey from a possible 225 coaches who were sent the email (as listed in the Maadi entry form).

were not advised early enough, and because the doubles had only one crew per school which is the toughest limit imposed to date.

It was clear that coaches either scratch crews because of illness/injury or because they didn’t want to jeopardise another event.

Athletes being scratched due to illness or injury is perfectly acceptable.

However, the idea that an athlete would be scratched in order to perform

better in another event did lead us to question: was this scratching being done because the athlete had been entered inappropriately in the

first place? (i.e. too many events to be able to complete all the rounds adequately). Therefore the number of events per pupil was investigated.

TRAINING TIMES After receiving a lot of feedback that the training times over the weekend prior to the start of the 2014 Aon Maadi Cup (Saturday and Sunday) were not long enough, the duration was extended in 2015.

The times provided at the 2015 Maadi Cup were considered much more adequate and provided coaches with the training they were after.

FACILITIES AND OPERATIONS BOAT RACKS The feedback on the facilities is areaspecific; however, some common themes came through. A large number wanted more boat racks supplied in the boat park at both locations.

TE AWAMUTU MASTERS' REGATTA THE TE AWAMUTU MASTERS’ REGATTA WAS HELD AT LAKE NGAROTO ON SATURDAY, 11 APRIL IN GLORIOUS CONDITIONS. THERE WAS A SLIGHT MORNING BREEZE THAT DISAPPEARED BY LUNCH TIME, LEAVING THE LAKE LIKE A MIRROR. Entries were received from 162 competitors from Auckland, BOP Coast, Rotorua, Hauraki, Cambridge, North Shore, St George, Mercer, Tauranga and the Waikato Rowing Club, resulting in a record number of entries for this annual regatta. Over the 23 events, there were 228 entries with the open mixed double being the most popular event. As usual, the rowing was very competitive with many bodies pushed to their

limits. Novice rowers overcame race-day nerves and achieved personal goals, while the young man from Rotorua in the ‘J’ age group (76+ years of age) was an inspiration to all.

The much anticipated ‘free burger and beer’ at the end of the day was enjoyed by all. One of many highlights of the day was the goat stew brought along by a Hauraki team member. It went down a treat. Sorry to those who missed out, there just wasn’t enough for everyone. Many rowers stayed to

enjoy the yarns and discussions from the day’s racing in the tranquil setting of Lake Ngaroto.

John Hatwell and his team did an excellent job in officiating the regatta and clause 5 of the conditions of entry did not need reinforcing at any time: ‘Clause 5: Any crew found to have jumped, misheard (hard of hearing) by the Chief Starter, will automatically be deemed a cheat, thus no treat at the end of the day.’

It was a fantastic and memorable day only made possible by the fantastic weather, fantastic rowing and fantastic people!

Cheltenham Cup Sam Martel WINNER OF THE CHELTENHAM CUP, THE CANTERBURY ROWING ASSOCIATION’S TROPHY FOR THE MOST OUTSTANDING MALE SCHOOL ROWER, IS ST ANDREW’S ROWER SAM MARTEL. Together with Sam Robertson he claimed the boys U18 pair title at the 2015 Aon Maadi Cup, to cap an excellent season that saw St Andrew’s re-assert the school as a force in secondary school rowing.

Coach Ross Lindstrom can be justifiably proud of St Andrew’s re-emergence.

Sam gained a trial for the New Zealand junior squad to race in the World Junior Championships in Rio de Janiero and has been selected in the boys coxed four.

He is now in training at Karapiro, together with fellow Cantabrian

George Howat.

The Cheltenham Cup has an interesting history. It was first contested in 1863 in Cambridge, England. How it found its way to New Zealand is unclear but the name of one of its original

winners is also recorded as an arrival at Lyttelton in the mid1860s. Unearthed among scrap in an old stable demolition in Beckenham in the early 1980s, it was presented to the Canterbury Rowing Association

by the Sampson family and has been contested since 1985.

Names since engraved on the trophy are a roll of New Zealand representatives through to Olympic level. This alone makes it a prized trophy.

JUBILEE CUP HISTORY

JUBILEE CUP 2015 RECIPIENT A sought-after trophy in Canterbury female school rowing is the Canterbury Jubilee Cup. The 2015 winner, St Margaret’s rower Olivia Mendonca, joins a group of rowers who are making their mark in our sport. Awarded for performance and leadership on and off the water, Olivia is a worthy recipient as she joins our 2015 junior squad now training at Karapiro for the 2015 Junior World Championships in Rio. Olivia is not the first St Margaret’s rower to

be awarded this trophy. Holly Greenslade was a back-to-back winner in 2012 and 2013, a testament to the quality of the St Margaret’s commitment to running a superb rowing “machine” year after year. And with names such as London Olympian and current summer squad member Eve Macfarlane already engraved on the trophy, Olivia has the goals to emulate already set.

The Canterbury Jubilee Cup has an interesting history. It came into rowing stalwart Eddie Martin's custody anonymously in 2010. Raced for only once, at the regatta held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Canterbury province's founding, the magnificent piece of Victoriana had been out of sight for over a century. It was won by the Christchurch Amateur Boating Club and wrongly engraved as 'Rowing'. This club started life as the YMCA Rowing Club in 1890, adopted its new name in 1898 and wound up after its clubhouse and plant were destroyed in a fire in 1909.

Attrition in Rowing PART 2 - By John Wylie

In the last OarSport magazine we took a look at our young rowers and the distressing statistics of how few manage the transition from school to club rowing.

Canterbury Sports Foundation Scholarships Canterbury junior rowers were successful in gaining two Canterbury Sports Foundation scholarships this year. Hugo Elworthy was awarded the Commerce Club Business Partner award and Lucy Hutchinson received the B R Walker Memorial scholarship.

Both were members of the Southern RPC high performance squad in the season just gone: Hugo was a 2014 junior representative who claimed the bronze in the coxed four, and Lucy has been selected in this year’s juniors to compete at Rio. In the last decade Sam and James O’Connor of Boat Race fame, as well as current elite and U23-squad rowers Lucy Spoors, Grace Prendergast, Emma Dyke, Nathan Flannery and Cameron Crampton have been among the more than a dozen rowing recipients of these worthwhile scholarships. The BR Walker Memorial Scholarship is especially appreciated as it pays tribute to a Canterbury and national rowing identity, who contributed so much to both rowing and other sports.

The Canterbury Sports Foundation came into being following the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games. The Games finished with a surplus and the organising committee decided to form the foundation with personnel from the Games committees and apply the interest from the invested surplus toward scholarships for Canterbury youth endorsed by their respective sports bodies. Over $500,000 has been distributed since then.

e invest several years of coaching, plant supply and regatta competition for what would be an abysmal return were we a commercial enterprise. Instead of meek acceptance, the Canterbury Rowing Association (CRA) is taking a pro-active role in discovering the reasons, rectifying the shortcomings and hopefully reaping the benefits of increased club participation.

The CRA has welcomed financial support from the Mainland Foundation and the Canterbury Community Trust, which has enabled us to secure the services of Performance Coach Advance candidate Kaye Surgenor to mentor rowing school-leavers in Canterbury over the winter months. Kaye was in action at the 2015 Aon Maadi Cup regatta once her St Margaret’s duties were discharged. Her move to this position has been welcomed by Canterbury’s school-leaver rowers who are keen to continue but need the support of a structured programme. A host of candidates for duplication of her role already exist in our school coaches and it will not escape the attention of the astute that a year-round involvement by coaches holds the attraction of continuity of involvement.

Support coaches have attached themselves to the winter programme and rowers from a cross-school base are delighted to participate. We tend to forget that a school rower has everything covered but when they are on their own they need a little bit of TLC to keep them in the fold!!

Lincoln University through Prof. Mike Hamlin has also added expertise with both a supervisory role and the services of a postgraduate student, working with Kaye to explore the reasons for discontinuing participation.

Conclusions will be drawn but suffice to say at this stage the provision of a winter programme and the availability of an experienced coach has drawn

School leavers need someone to mentor and advise them as they take independent steps. Hopefully your club has already addressed this need by delegating those best suited to this key role.

Let us all do our bit to ensure three or four years of school coaching is not wasted and keep more of our young people in the sport for longer.

Alistair, who has spent four decades as the Otago Daily Times sports writer and was also a Commonwealth athletics coach, spoke about local and national rowing icons who have shaped our sport. We wish to congratulate all nominees and winners and give thanks to Dean Winton and the Otago Rowing Club for hosting a spectacular event.

SOUTH ISLAND MASTERS REGATTA Over Queens Birthday the Otago region was out in force on the Oreti River in Invercargill for the South Island Masters Championships – check out some photos of the action. It was a great weekend with strong competition and great

conditions, particularly for the long distance, which was raced on mirror-flat water. This regatta is frequently accompanied by snow, but this year was mild and frost-free, which was a great relief. The Southland crews put on a

fantastic feast of seafood on the Saturday night – oysters, crayfish, salmon, mussels, venison and steak, to name but a few of the succulent items. It certainly fuelled some energetic performances on the water on Sunday!

ILT Foundation Winter Training Programme Into Eighth Year EIGHT ATHLETES WERE SELECTED INTO SOUTHLAND ROWING ASSOCIATIONS 2015 INVERCARGILL LICENSING TRUST (ILT) FOUNDATION WINTER TRAINING PROGRAMME. Maadi Cup and erg test results were used to initially rank the athletes in their age-groups.

Each nominee was interviewed by selectors, to confirm the expectations of the selectors and the athletes.

This year’s group includes three Maadi Cup medallists, a South Island U18 team member and many up-and-comers in the under-16 agegroup, as follows: »» Michaela Townshend »» Maiah Hegarty »» Georgia Smith »» Caitlin Fry »» Maddie Green »» Ciccone Tweedie »» Holly McMahon »» Rachel Froude The five-month winter training programme consists of three gym sessions, two scheduled erg sessions or cross-training activities (spin, pilates) and on-water weekend sessions and camps.

Duncan Holland provides the coaching for the rowing programme and Southern Institute of Technology’s Will Payne continues as strength and conditioning coach for the eighth year.

The aim of the programme is to provide highquality base strength, conditioning, and rowing skills with correct technique in all aspects of the programme.

Athletes are also provided with insights into

nutrition, media liaison, high performance and goal setting throughout the weekend camps held on the Oreti River.

The programme has provided the early training pathway for NZ age-group and elite representative athletes such as Kristen Froude, Hayden Cohen and Lisa Owen as well as numerous New Zealand University, under-21 and Trans-Tasman university representatives.

SOUTH ISLAND UNDER-18 EXPERIENCE FOR FIVE SOUTHERNERS THREE SOUTHLAND ROWING ASSOCIATION AFFILIATED ATHLETES TRIALLED FOR THE SOUTH ISLAND UNDER-18 TEAM FOR 2015.

Maadi Cup under-17 single silver medallist Moira MacDonald and under-18 quad silver medallist Georgia Smith both made the under-18 South Island girls’ quad alongside near-neighbour Dunstan High Rowing Club’s Lucy Geddes.

Two coaches were also selected: Joseph Findley of Invercargill Rowing Club was handed the reins of the boys’ South Island under-18 quad, which includes Wakatipu High School’s Jacob Flanagan and Wanaka Rowing Club’s Riley Bruce.

Fellow Invercargill Rowing Club and James Hargest College coach, Jack Allen, was placed in charge of the South Island boys’ eight.

FOUR NEW BOATS FOR WAIHOPAI “LISA OWEN”, “KRISTEN FROUDE”, “HAMILTONBARNES” AND “EVERETT” WERE THE NAMES GIVEN TO FOUR NEW SKIFFS PURCHASED BY THE WAIHOPAI ROWING CLUB EARLIER THIS YEAR. The new coxed four/quad “Everett” replaces the previous version and pays tribute to Russell and Mandy Everett and their four children, all of whom rowed for the club at one stage or another, with two representing New Zealand at age-group and elite levels in the 1990s Undecided on a full name and which year to recall, Sarah Hamilton (nee Barnes) asked the club to acknowledge the support of her family and her spouse in naming the other new coxed

four/quad “Hamilton Barnes”. Lisa Owen and Kristen Froude both had doubles named after them, following their world under-23 medals in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

Community Trust of Southland chairperson John Prendergast was on hand to bless the boats as family members doused the bows with the obligatory bubbles.

SOUTH ISLAND ROWING LIFE MEMBERHIP FOR BUCHANAN At the recent 2015 South Island Rowing Annual General Meeting, the Southland Rowing Association (SRA) nominated Cliff Buchanan for life membership - which was duly appointed by the association.

Cliff “Buck” Buchanan’s first involvement with South Island Rowing began in the early 70s.

Cliff was at the first meeting promoting the formation of Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel with Max Smith.

Cliff has been a South Island Rowing committee member since that early meeting and has held the positions of chairman and vice chairman, as well as being the SRA delegate for many years.

Cliff was also an umpire at all levels, and continues to be in this present day.

Having held the position of Chief Umpire for many regattas, including New Zealand Championships and Maadi Cup events, Cliff continued to raise the bar and take on greater challenges, becoming a FISA umpire in 1997. He has gone on to be both a tutor and an examiner for FISA and Rowing New Zealand officials’ licences for a number of years.

Congratulations and many thanks for all your continuing work Cliff!

J'OC TACKLES HEAD COACH ROLE DUE FOR JUNIOR DUTIES IN 2015, THE ADDITION OF THE SOUTHERN RPC HEAD COACH ROLE TO THE CV FOR JOHN O’CONNOR HAS ALSO MEANT A MOVE AWAY FROM HIS DEEP SOUTH HOME BASE OF 30 YEARS. The 2012 New Zealand Rowing coach of the year has continued to produce crews and athletes medalling at Maadi Cup and New Zealand Rowing Championships each year, while holding down a full-time position at the Tiwai aluminium smelter and leading the way as secretary for the Southland Rowing Association.

John’s contribution and inestimable direction to the association will be missed but his leadership

has left the association in good health and knowledge.

Waihopai Rowing Club held a “This Is Your Rowing Life”-style interview with John at the club’s recent prize-giving, where John shared his favourite moments. He identified time spent with rowing and now lifelong friends, and seeing athletes achieve their goals, as highlights of his 30 years rowing and coaching in Southland. John was presented with a hard-cover book containing photos collated by club members, and a Waihopai commemorative medal.

While Southern RPC coaching duty entails a move away from Invercargill, there will be a continued link to Southland in the role.

THE SOUTHLAND LEGION OF ROWERS HOSTED THE 2015 SOUTH ISLAND MASTERS ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS ON THE ORETI RIVER AT QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY WEEKEND. 138 ROWERS COMPETED IN THE TWO-DAY, 61-EVENT RACE PROGRAMME. Saturday’s racing commenced with mixed quads over 1000m and was followed by a mirror-like 5km long distance race for eights, quads and fours.

On handicap, the fastest eight in the long distance was Awarua Boating Club’s mixed eight. Dunstan Arm Rowing Club’s men’s C quad was the fastest quad over the 5km long distance race. Port Chalmers women’s D quad were the fastest of the female crews.

Saturday’s racing was followed by the traditional southern seafood and wild food BBQ – an opportunity to experience true southern hospitality, with the southernmost rowing clubs having ease-of-access to the finest seafood source: Foveaux Strait. Competitors and supporters were treated to paua, oysters, crayfish and local lamb and beef.

Maker take out the men’s single. Natalie Wilson from Cromwell Rowing Club won the women’s single.

The oldest crew in the regatta, an Invercargill/ Waihopai composite crew of Peter Sinclair, Ron Riley, Dave Galbraith and Ian Smith, won the men’s quad by 0.5 of a second on handicap. Port Chalmers United Rowing Club’s Imogen Coxhead, Robyn Cameron, Jan Brosnahan and Michelle Johnston won the women’s quad. This Port crew also took out the women’s four. Not surprisingly, the men’s four was taken out by Awarua’s Rex Ryan, Kevin Flutey, Steve Geary and Frank Deans.

New to the programme were the interprovincial eights where Otago’s women’s eight triumphed over a Southland combination. Mixed drawn eights raced to end the regatta. In all, 300 gold medals were handed out across the masters’ age-groups.

Invercargill Licencing Trust (ILT) provided cut-rate accommodation to competitors and visitors and the Ascot Park Hotel venue for Sunday night’s prize giving meal was a hit with the 190 people who danced the night away to the live entertainment.

Rowing is well represented at this year's Wellington Sports Awards with three athletes and two clubs announced as nominees in a range of categories.

For the second year running James Hunter (Central RPC/Wellington Rowing Club) has been nominated in the Sportsman of the Year category after winning silver in the men’s lightweight four at the 2014 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam.

In the Sportswoman category ErinMonique O’Brien (Central RPC/Petone Rowing Club) has been nominated for her strong performance during the 2014 international season.

Joe Wright (Central RPC/Wellington

RPC) has received his first nomination in the Emerging Sportsman of the Year category after winning gold in the men’s eight at the 2014 U23 World Rowing Championships for the second year running.

In the Club of the Year category Petone and Wellington rowing clubs have both been nominated, showing the strength of these clubs within the region.

The awards are being held on Thursday 4 June at Wellington’s TSB Arena.

The crew have been hard at work fundraising in the build-up to the event, which they estimate will cost them $25,000. So far $12,000 has been raised; the remainder of the cost will be met by the athletes.

Petone to compete at Henley FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE CLUB’S HISTORY, PETONE ROWING CLUB HAS APPLIED TO COMPETE AT THE ESTEEMED HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA BEING HELD FROM THE 1–5 JULY. THE CREW FINDS OUT THREE WEEKS PRIOR TO THE EVENT IF THEIR APPLICATION HAS BEEN ACCEPTED. The Henley Royal Regatta is steeped in history.

Founded in 1839 it is one of the best-known rowing regattas in the world. The event attracts over 300,000 visitors throughout the five-day

regatta, with crews travelling from all over the globe to compete.

If their application is accepted, Petone club members Patrick O’Reilly, Troy O’Reilly, Jamie Saunders and Ed Cade will travel to England to compete in the regatta. These four are no strangers to success. During the 2014/15 season, Patrick, Ed and Jamie won a number of events at the Bankstream New Zealand Rowing Championships including the men’s senior coxless pair and quad, while Troy represented

his club as a member of the Central Regional Performance Centre. Jamie also went on to trial for the New Zealand Elite team, after an outstanding performance at the New Zealand Championships.

Psychology in rowing - passion and purpose

for what you do, because it’s so hard that if you don’t, any rational person would give up

because they are sane

It all starts with purpose, a reason for doing what you are doing.

If that thing for you is rowing then knowing why you are doing it will allow you to stay focused every time you row or train.

There is no right or wrong purpose for doing what you’re doing. Whether it is for the joy of moving your boat well, for health and fitness in the great outdoors, or for the friendships you make in the boat, it doesn’t matter - so long as you focus on this purpose and work towards or achieve this purpose each time you row.

The first step for persistence and performance in sport is to understand what you are trying to achieve so that you know whether you have achieved it or not. This helps you to keep working towards achieving that purpose.

To be successful in rowing takes a lot of hard work, commitment and capability.

The attitude of our elite rowers and their approach to training on the water, in the gym and on the bike, as well as their commitment to their recovery programmes, is impressive. I believe

that this dedication to doing the things that matter is one of the key reasons why the New Zealand elite rowing programme is so successful and is the best in the world.

One of the first questions to ask any athlete is “Why do you do this and where does this dedication come from?” Because it is not easy and from the outside looking in it doesn’t look like fun – all the early starts, the monotony of training, the pain that they put themselves through every day. However, in my role I am yet to meet an elite rower who says they don’t love it. They are passionate about rowing for a combination of reasons: for some it’s about pushing their bodies to the limit; for some it’s the camaraderie they find in a big boat and the feeling of a moving a boat well together; others are passionate about beating their opposition. So not only do these elite rowers have a purpose or reason for rowing, they are passionate about achieving that purpose and it is this passion that keeps them doing it.

The second step to persistence and performance in sport is to find passion for your purpose. Why do you want to achieve what you want to achieve? What do you love about rowing?

If we can stay connected to our passion and purpose for sport then we will continue to do it with the same energy and effort for a very long time.

However, over an extended length of time doing the same thing over and over again our brains (very adaptable things) can start to get

used to the routine, and so doing the thing you are passionate about becomes normal, and by becoming normal it’s no longer as exciting.

As a result we can find ourselves going through the motions without fully engaging in the activity or without the same energy as before.

The third step is about consciously tapping into your passion, and using it

to drive your effort and keep you going even in the face of obstacles. Stopping on a regular basis to remember why you do what you do and what you love about it, and to remind yourself that you choose to do it, stops the activity from becoming normal and helps you persist and keep doing it. .

Sophie MacKenzie and Megan Craig have been friends since high school at Marlborough Girls College where they both put in the hard yards in our chosen sporting fields. Both girls now live gluten free and are very health conscious due to some plaguing stomach issues and found that their performance levels improved through changing their diets and lifestyle choices to more natural and whole foods with some awesome additions of super foods too. This lead to the creation of “Megs and Soph” their own blog and Facebook page where they share their healthy recipes, information, other inspiring athletes with interviews, things we love and motivation plus a whole lot more. As always thought their main concentration is on furthering their sporting careers.

Megan Craig competed at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in squash and Sophie MacKenzie competed at the under-23 world rowing championships in 2014 and won gold in the women’s lightweight double scull, and then she went onto a double gold, winning the elite world championship title with Julia Edward in the women’s lightweight double. Both Megs and Sophie are aiming for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Power Bar ½ cup nuts ¼ cup sunflower seed 5 medjool date ¼ cup coconut ¼ cups oats 2–3 tbsp Cacao powder 1–2 scoops chocolate protein powder ¼ cup melted coconut oil 1–2 tbsp honey (optional)

Kumara, Feta and Sundried Tomato Fritters (Makes four, 1 serving. Any hard veges that grate well can be used instead of kumara and zucchini, if preferred.)

½ cup roughly grated kumara ½ cup roughly grated zucchini 1 tbsp coconut flour 1 egg 3 sundried tomatoes 2–3 tbsp feta broken

Pre-heat a frying pan with coconut/olive oil, butter or lard.

Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.

Squeeze and roll into balls then flatten gently between palms.

Place in the heated fry pan and cook for 3–4 minutes on each side or until a crispy, golden colour.

Serve with smashed avocado (recipe below).

Combine all ingredients together in a small pot.

Cook over a low heat for 5–10 minutes until warm and the oats have softened (may need to add more water or milk if it thickens up to quickly).

Pour into a bowl and place honey on top, leave for 1 minute to let it melt and run over the porridge before serving.

Serve with more milk and some home-made muesli if desired.
