Description:

The Alabama Museum of Natural History, located in historic Smith Hall on the University of Alabama campus, showcases the natural diversity of Alabama through exhibits from the age of dinosaurs, the Coal Age and the Ice Age. It features extensive displays of geology, zoology, mineralogy, paleontology, ethnology, history and photography. The museum also houses several state gems, including the Hodges meteorite, the only meteorite known to have struck a human, and the State Fossil of Alabama, Basilosaurus cetoides.

Mission statement:

The mission of the Alabama Museum of Natural History is to broaden the knowledge of natural sciences and human culture through collections and quality programs of research, instruction and service.1

Funding:

The Alabama Museum of Natural History exists as a part of the University of Alabama Museums system. UA Museums has an annual budget of roughly $1.2 million, and AMNH receives $50,000 of that annually for its operating budget. For the last 10 years, program funding has been cut more, and each year the museum is forced to put on the same programs with fewer dollars. 12
