PINEVILLE – I could barely hear my partners as the roaring helicopter airdropped our gyrosphere into the dense jungle. I wasn’t exactly sure what we were doing or where we were going, but I knew I had at least one job: scan all the dinosaurs. We rolled down a hill to an abandoned camp, pointing and clicking our devices at some flying Pterosaurs and a long-necked Brachiosaurus that leaned in so close, I honestly got a lit-
tle scared. Next, following an agile Velociraptor, our vehicle emerged into a wide-open plain. Our vehicle teetered onto the abandoned railway in the station and began to roll – right toward a gap in the track. A dot appeared in the sky and grew until it took the shape of a quadrotor helicopter coming to our rescue. It reached us just as we fell off the broken track and a giant razor-teethed Mesosaur exploded from the murky
original “Jurassic Park” soundtrack swelled in our ears and we were congratulated for our hard work.
CHARLOTTE – The National Civic League recognized Charlotte with the All-America City Award for its response to the fatal shooting of Keith Lamont Scott by police in 2016 and accusations of economic inequities. The NCL noted how the city engaged residents in one-on-one meetings and community meetings,

CHARLOTTE – When former Providence Day School lacrosse player Will Filiault was getting ready to sign his national letter of intent to play lacrosse at Jacksonville (Fla.) University in February, Chargers coach Bobby Thompson jokingly told him that he would need to have a special senior year to become the all-time leading goal scorer and points scorer in school history. Filiault had a special senior season for the Chargers. Filiault scored 55 goals to tie for the top spot as the school’s all-time goal scorer
and his 83 total points made the 6-foot3, 185-pound midfielder the top total points leader in school history, as Providence Day advanced to the NCISAA state championship game in May. Those impressive numbers earned Filiault All-Conference, All-State and All-American honors. For his efforts, Filiault is the South Charlotte Weekly Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year. “Obviously, a great year,” Thompson said. “I told him he could potentially break those records and he ended up tied in career goals and as the all-time leader in points scored. It was a pretty big number see FILIAULT, Page 2A

I took off my headset and looked around Dave & Buster’s restaurant and arcade to readjust to the real world. Dave & Buster’s locations around the country opened up their first virtual reality experience, “Jurassic World VR Expedition” on June 15. And it feels very real. The “ride” is a stationary four-seat cart that tilts, rumbles and rocks to immerse you in the 360-degree 3D video and audio you see and hear through the attached HTC Vive headset. You can’t see the others on the ride with you, but you can see their headsets and wands used to aim and scan dinosaurs moving in real time. You can get your hands on a similar headset and play VR games on an Xbox, PlayStation or computer. But Pineville D&B’s General Manager Jim McGann thinks technology like their company-exclusive “Jurassic World” is more immersive. “I don’t think you can put that platform at home,” McGann said. “And that to me feels more like real life. A lot of our clientele are gamers, so they play at home all the time – but they still yearn to come to a place like this where they have everything at their fingertips and it’s a bigger, better version.” Although it’s currently the only VR title, “Jurassic World” isn’t the only one of Dave & Buster’s roughly 150 that’s more immersive than home gaming. “The Luigi’s Mansion” vacuum controller physi-

cally clatters when you suck up coins, the “Dark Escape” horror shooter booth features surround sound jump scares, and the multiplayer-enabled Mario Kart machines feature mechanical steering wheels and separate pedals for gas and brakes. However, Special Events Manager Yarie Maldonado believes the point of Dave & Buster’s goes beyond fun and immersive games though. “People can go to any arcade, but when they come here, they’re looking for that overall experience we provide,” Maldonado said. “Everything from our food, our drinks, our games – we like to unify it and give people the full Dave & Buster’s experience.” “Jurassic World” may be the first Dave & Buster’s VR game, but amusements manager and machine operator Roger Henry said it won’t be the only one. Henry said the company designed the machine to be updated with new software, so the pieces are in place for new immersive and exciting experiences. He also confirmed future games will be associated with movie releases. As far as what’s next, Henry made this guarantee: “I don’t know what movies are coming up, so I wouldn’t be able to tell exactly, but it’s going to be something exciting, I know.” The new movie, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” hit theaters June 22.

to hit to reach those milestones. It was his determination that allowed him to do that. His strength is his athleticism, and he has tremendous drive to do well. Will is a competitor.” Filiault, who also earned All-Conference football honors for Providence Day last fall as a safety, finished his career with 185 goals, including 98 his junior and season seasons while he was also a team captain both seasons for the Chargers. He was a fouryear letterman in lacrosse during his high school career. While his individual accomplishments stand out, Filiault is most proud of the fact that he was part of a team that advanced to the state championship game. Christ School, of Arden, defeated the Chargers 18-8 to win the state title for a second-consecutive year. “I was really grateful that I got to compete in the state championship with my teammates,” Filiault said. “We had such a young team, and that was a really great thing. It took a team effort. We were also in the state championship game in football as well.” Thompson said that Filiault played his best lacrosse in the playoffs after classmate Ryan Heffes suffered a season-ending hand injury in the regular-season finale that required surgery. “Will put the team on his shoulder in the play-
offs,” Thompson said. “We didn’t know if we were going to make it as far as we made it without Ryan. I think Will welcomed the responsibility and he played outstanding lacrosse the last couple of weeks of the season.” Filiault, who will be taking honors classes at Jacksonville, is also active off the field, volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and Everyone Loves Lacrosse. “Our players volunteer at ELL twice a week in the fall to teach younger kids the game,” Thompson said. “He was a big part of that as well.” Filiault said he is looking forward to taking his lacrosse game to the collegiate level. Filiault will be one of 24 freshmen on the Jacksonville roster. “I’m really excited about going to Jacksonville and I can’t wait to get down there and start changing lacrosse in the South,” Filiault said. “We have a really good freshmen class.” Jacksonville lacrosse coach John Galloway said he expects Filiault to compete for playing time as a freshman. “Will is a multi-sport athlete with unlimited potential,” Galloway said. “Will is a star football player that utilizes his athleticism on the lacrosse field. He will immediately impact our midfield on both sides of the ball. Will is also going to be in the honors program here at JU.”
Will Filiault, Providence Day The two-time all-state midfielder helped fuel Chargers run to NCISAA title game. The Jacksonville commit was an all-American after a standout season during which the South Charlotte Weekly Player of the Year had 37 goals, 22 assists and played a crucial role in the Charger defense. Ryan Heffes, Providence Day Heffes earned all-state honors while helping the Chargers march all the way to the NCISAA championship game. He scored 20 goals and piled up a CISAA-high 51 assists, which ranked 33rd in the country according to MaxPreps. com. He also collected 33 ground balls. Collin Hoben, Charlotte Latin Hoben had a tremendous season for the Hawks, earning himself all-conference and all-state honors for his work in the midfield and on faceoffs, where he shined brightly. The junior is a High Point commit and this season won 216 faceoffs at a 76 percent success rate. Michael Horgan, Charlotte Catholic The all-conference defender was great at locking down the back of the Catholic line. The Washington and Lee commit made the Cougars transition to Conference 14 a smooth one and caught the admiration of many opposing coaches for his strong play. Andrew Kelly, Myers Park The Mustangs went undefeated in conference play and 13-5 overall behind an offense that averaged 12 goals per game. Look no further than Kelly as the reason why as the Army commit proved to be one of the state’s top attackers and playmakers. Jackson Price, Ardrey Kell Price is the second half of the Knights' brilliant freshman pair. Price scored 59 goals, the fourth-highest total from a freshman this season, according to Maxpreps.com. He piled up 43 assists, which was the second-most for a freshman this season, and he topped 100 points in his sensational debut. Brad Thompson, Charlotte Catholic Thompson spearheaded a very good Cougar offensive attack. The Rutgers commit was just as dangerous leading the break, making the key pass or beating the goalkeeper himself. He was the key to an offense that put up 12 goals per game.

Reader wonders if client can legally abandon bill Dear Attorney, I sell personalized organic pet food meal plans and the ingredients to make them. I have a contract clients sign stating what I do and how much my services cost. Recently, a client refused to pay his bill of $5,000 because he claims I took too long and that because he never signed the contract, he’s not responsible for paying me. I did not take too long and he agreed to the terms of the agreement in an email even though he never signed the actual contract. Can he really not pay me or is he just being stingy? Submit your questions to inquiries@weaverbuddlaw.com Pet food or shower curtain rings, a written contract helps the parties understand their rights and obligations to one another as well as determine what to do if one party to the contract fails to do his part. In North Carolina, certain types of contracts must be in writing and signed by the person/company against whom enforcement is sought. A contract for the sale of items, such as a car or refrigerator, must be in writing if the sales price is $500 or more. Similarly, a contract for the sale of land must be in writing as is the case for residential lease. The requirement for a written contract, however, is substantially more complicated than just saying “in writing.” What qualifies as a “writing,” and how is the requirement for a “signature” satisfied in today’s world? Finally, what are the rules if people who signed it disagree about how the contract was to be performed? First, you have a contract with your client. The writing and signature requirements are satisfied if you sent him the terms of the agreement and he sent an email to you agreeing to those terms. The more complicated issue is how do you interpret the contract if the two of you do not agree on when and how it was to be performed. You do not mention what the contract said regarding the time frame to perform, but if the contract is silent about the time to perform, this is essentially a question of reasonableness and each side’s interpretation of that. Could you have been late in performing? If so, does this affect what your client owes you? It may not, if your client received the full benefit of what was promised to him and was not damaged by the delay, then he should be responsible for the full amount. In short, it’s a complicated question which will potentially require looking outside what is known as the “four corners” of the contract to see what you and your client intended the time to perform to be or thought the time to perform was. between you and your client as well as written correspondence, such as emails. My recommendation is to look at your contract. Does it say when you had to deliver the meals? If not, did you and your client discuss the time period for you to do your work? Be honest with yourself. Were you slow to perform? If so, was the client harmed from this delay? Is your client being unreasonable in his expectations or just stingy, not wanting to pay? Honesty in the self-analysis by both parties may help the two of you reach an agreement to resolve the contract dispute. If you cannot reach an agreement, consulting an attorney to assess your claim would be worth it so you can determine if it is worth pursuing in court. From breakfast to advocacy Ballantyne leaders becoming more active in infrastructure by Justin Vick justin@cmgweekly.com
CHARLOTTE – Since 2001, Ray Eschert has been inviting city and county leaders to engage with neighbors at Ballantyne Breakfast Club meetings. In recent months, the “Mayor of Ballantyne” has become more of an advocate for the south Charlotte region. He left his role as chairman of the Ballantyne Breakfast Club last year to take on more responsibility with the South Charlotte Partners, a new group working to enhance the quality of life for residents and businesses in the region. Eschert penned a letter May 30 to Mayor Vi Lyles and the Charlotte City Council, on behalf of South Charlotte Partners, thanking leaders for including in their budget $20 million in funding for the extension of Bryan Farms Road and $5 million for public safety projects. Eschert asked the council for an additional $5 million for other projects. He followed the letter up by asking the council in person on Jan. 11. “The ability to identify things that need to be looked at and then bringing some weight behind them definitely gets attention,” Eschert said. Tim Morgan and Victoria Nwasike have not only taken over the Ballantyne Breakfast Club, but they also work with Eschert on the volunteer board of the South Charlotte Partners. While the Ballantyne Breakfast Club will continue to serve as a communications network between residents and elected bodies, the South Charlotte Partners will be focused more on policy issues, Morgan said. Both groups are working together to bring more infrastructure to the community. “For years, it's always been recognized that as a donor district, we were providing a lot of funding and getting very little of it in return,” Eschert said. The dynamics changed when Smoky Bissell and his Bissell Companies sold Ballantyne Corporate Park to Northwood Investors last year. Ballantyne leaders credit Bissell, not the city, for many of the road improvements around the 535-acre park. One of the perks of having Eschert and
Nwasike on the South Charlotte Partners board is their experience on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission. This allows them to work with developers on bringing better projects to the region. “From my experience serving on the planning commission, you start to realize the hostility toward the developers has been based on the fact that there's been no up-front conversations,” Eschert said. Developers looking to invest in the Ballantyne area have traditionally depended on city staff for rezonings, but city staff doesn't necessarily have the strongest pulse of the community. They now know to give Eschert a call. “We obviously are not trying to tell somebody what their project has to look like, but it's providing an opportunity for those folks to get some information to know what they're stepping into,” Morgan said. “So when they have their community meetings, they are better prepared.” Such dialogue could help increase the amount of buffers or decrease the number of housing units in a given project. Eschert has advocated on behalf of the South Charlotte Partners beyond the city limits. He recently encouraged the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization to go ahead and widen Lancaster Highway. He's also written Gov. Roy Cooper to advance construction of managed lanes for Interstate 485, a project that could alleviate traffic congestion coming from Matthews and Union County. The group said it has received favorable feedback from the North Carolina Turnpike Authority. Nwasike envisions South Charlotte Partners overseeing a Municipal Service District, similar to Center City Partners or University City Partners. They are taxing districts that improve quality of life in a commercial area. For example, the University City Partners completed a study a few years ago outlining how the community would like to see light rail stations develop along the LYNX Blue Line Extension. With enough funding, the South Charlotte Partners could have paid staff supporting the volunteer board's efforts. As for the Ballantyne Breakfast Club, Morgan and Nwasike have been able to pick up where Eschert has left off with programming. Their next event is the annual back to school panel on Aug. 11, featuring Superintendent Clayton Wilcox and school board members Mary McCray and Sean Strain. Visit www. ballantynebreakfastclub.com to learn more about both groups.

S
outh Charlotte Weekly launched its Best of the Weekly readers' choice competition April 27. Since then, readers have been voting for their favorite companies via paper and online ballots. In previous years, the winner of each category was determined by votes from readers of all three of our newspapers, including Matthews-Mint Hill Weekly and Union County Weekly. Heading into this year, we decided to give each weekly its own set of winners. This made it more fair to companies in south Charlotte. Some of the winners have done an exceptional job in positioning themselves as the most recognizable companies in their respective industries, while others have asked customers to cast votes on their behalf. Either way, I congratulate all of this year's winners. May the awards give you some momentum heading into the summer and fall. I pity the fool that tries to contact me and engage in jibba jabba about how they should have won because of blah blah or yada yada. It's wonderful that you have a superior product or service compared to the winner. I'm sorry if you didn't know about the voting or you think the contest is dumb. Bottom line: This was a readers' choice competition.
Best Day Care: Sardis Presbyterian Wee School The school is registering children from infants to transitional kindergarten for the 2018-19 school year. The ministry of Sardis Presbyterian Church has been caring and educating students for several generations.
Best Private School: Carmel Christian School Carmel Christian's mission is “to provide an excellent education, built on biblical truth, which equips students to reflect Christ to the world.” It is strong academically, athletically and artistically.
SPORTS&FITNESS Best Dance Studio: Miller Street Dance Company The dance company offers summer camps and showcases, while its dancers win awards. Owner Michelle Rogers has participated in charitable initiatives like Dancers Against Cancer. Best Golf Course: The Golf Club at Ballantyne It's unusual to find a golf course on the property of a hotel, but it works at The Ballantyne Hotel and Resort. It has a practice area, pavilion and golf academy. Best Park: Marvin Efird Located in the Village of Marvin, this six-year-old park serves as an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. It has a large barn that can be
rented out for parties, as well as walking trails and playground. It's also home to community events.
Dick’s Sporting Goods has athletic gear that attracts youth as well as the occasional pro athlete, like Carolina Panthers star Christian McCaffrey. SCW file photo
Best Sporting Goods Store: Dick's Sporting Goods The national sports goods retailer has a presence in SouthPark, Pineville and Matthews. You can find equipment for most sports, including hiking, biking and camping. There's also pro team apparel. Best Gym: YMCA The YMCA of Greater Charlotte has locations throughout the city, including the Morrison Branch on Bryant Farms Road and Sara's Branch at Brixham Hill Avenue and Harris Branch on Quail Hollow Road. Each provides fitness and children's programming.
AUTOMOTIVE Best Auto Dealer: Hendrick Honda This dealership, which opened in 1991, tries to build relationships with customers and the community. Earlier this month, staff held a blood drive at the dealership on South Boulevard and fed people at homeless shelters.
Best Auto Repair: Tire Engineers Tire Engineers is the place to go to get tires, brakes, alignments, shocks, struts and mufflers looked at. There’s locations on Park Road in Charlotte and Pineville. see AUTOMOTIVE, Page 2B
