Campaign hopes to empower community by Justin Vick justin@cmgweekly.com
CHARLOTTE – Kelly Brooks started SHARE Charlotte to make it easier for people to learn more about charities serving the community. But the website has become much more. SHARE Charlotte generated more than $7.2 million for 174 charities during a two-week span in November 2016, making it the most successful #GivingTuesday campaign in the country. Giving Tuesday is a relatively new movement designed to counteract the commercialism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. All three days immediately follow Thanksgiving. SHARE Charlotte announced last month that Wells Fargo will serve as the presenting sponsor of this year’s #GivingTuesdayCLT campaign. It

seeks to raise $10 million from Nov. 14 to 28 for more than 230 nonprofits. “My mindset is focused less on the money and more about the number of people that are involved,” Brooks said.

CHARLOTTE – SHARE Charlotte staff spends months strategizing and coordinating a multi-million dollar campaign that benefits all of the city, Executive Director Kelly Brooks said. The goal of next month’s #GivingTuesdayCLT campaign is to bring awareness to Charlotte residents, while collaborating with more than 200 nonprofits for an annual event that will impact the community, Brooks said. The staff made its mark in 2016 with the largest Giving Tuesday campaign in the nation, raising more Jacobs than $7 million for 174 nonprofits. This year’s goal is to raise $10 million. Terry Albanese, senior development officer for Teen Health Connection, hopes people respond favorably to the campaign to help each organization raise money to help the community. Her charity improves the health of teens with inclusive and cohesive services. Involvement with SHARE Charlotte helped Teen Health Connection network with other nonprofit professionals, bring in new donors, raise more money and develop new strategies for planning future community events, Albanese said. With more than 441 partners and the help of eager-to-learn interns, SHARE Charlotte brings the community together with conferences and marketing classes. The staff’s drive to “bridge the gap between what people say they want to do versus what they actually do,” pushes them to make the community a strong environment for all, Brooks said. “Everyone has a part to give, even if it’s $5 or $10,” said Amy Jacobs, campaign manager. “Let’s show the community we care about Charlotte.”
CHARLOTTE – Best Buddies of North Carolina will host its inaguural “Be An Angel” Gala 6 to 11 p.m. Oct. 14 at the The Fillmore. NC Director Tammy Medlock said this is a great way to “party with a purpose” and support inclusivity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). There will be cocktails, dinner and a live and silent auction. The money raised from the gala will fund the state organization’s one-to-one friend-

ships and leadership development programs. These programs – along with the integrated employment initiative – are the foundation of this international nonprofit’s purpose to “end the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people with IDD.” Best Buddies NC formed at the beginning of last year and quickly gained support for the one-to-one friendship program. Last year, Myers Park and three other schools formed friendship chapters. Now, there are 11 school friendship chapters in NC including local schools such as Carmel see BUDDIES, Page 5A
