Here independent wine producer Matilde Poggi has cultivated her 30 hectares of vineyards and made her wine since 1984. 35 years, which is not very long in this business: every year the weather is different and so are the grapes. Every year they require different treatment. It takes patience and long horizons. Matilde has three daughters, and she hopes all three will stay on the farm. "It doesn't run in the family", she says; "my father had another job and his grapes were processed at another family winery. That's why I felt free to produce wines, following my own ideas and trying to interpret the identity of the land I cultivate. So my wines are the expression of my own work and of this area between the lake and the Adige Valley, where the soil is stony and extremely high in minerals". Another important characteristic of the local climate is the wind, always present, which is very useful for growing healthy grapes. "We're on the morainic hills which were created when the glacier that formed the lake and the Adige receded. The first vineyard I began to use is Le Fraghe, in front of the winery. In Veronese dialect the name means 'the strawberries', and until a few years ago I had no ideal where it came from. Then in 2009 when I began the process of organic certification (now all her wines are bio), and stopped using herbicide, I realised there are lots of wild strawberries in the vineyard. So I think that's where the name came from." Matilde's vineyards grow predominantly native local grape varieties such as Corvina and Rondinella Garganega. There's also Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc, although these are not typical in this area, because “When I started making wine 35 years ago, I was really fond of Cabernet so I decided to plant a vineyard with the grape. I currently produce 6 wines: Cmporengo Garganega, Rodon Bardolino Chiaretto DOC, Bardolino DOC, Brol Grande Bardolino Classico, Chelidon Rondinella, Quaiare Cabernet. All the wines are certified organic”. The estate is open for visits and tastings at the following times: Monday to Friday 9 to 13 and 13:30 to 17:30 Saturday mornings only.
