María del Mar community Retalhuleu (Guatemala) ETSAC School of Architecture La Coruña (Spain) Final project Master degree, July 2011 (published by the University) Urbanism and housing

The civil war in Guatemala left a lot of communites homeless, one of this is the Maria del Mar. The assignment is to organize a new settlement with the neccesary facilities and houses. The challenge of the situation is to investigate the different cultural and physical conditions of the place, and limited resources. The first step to solve the project was an intensive research on the existing climatical, cultural and morfological identity of the location, taking care of the posiblities and dangers for an agricultural community. Using the analysis, the ideal location for productive agricultural area was located. This new location of productive area was the basis for the organisation of the houses, infrastructure, facilities and a new green landcape. territorial analysis

Housing concept diagram

The cultural context makes a repeatable and expandable house for a family, which can grow in time and can be multifunctional if necessary. Houses are made using a repeatable wooden grid and frame standing on a singular earthquake resisting foundation, with standardized concrete modules (kitchen, toilet, bathroom) inside. This creates: - flexible but strong structure that can survive earthquakes - repeatable (cheap, easy) but personalized (family can create own house) - local building methods and materials - open plan allows flexibility and ventilating air flows.

Urbanism

bird view of the intervention

The goal is to improve the current state of degradation in the Campanha area, here the typical quarters called “islands” exists; a large number of small houses with poor living conditions, and old industrial buildings without use. After studying the current problems and needs, a proposal is given by setting up new facilities occupying disused spaces, which function will socially and functionally reactivate the zone of Campanha.

pedestrian network

These facilities will be linked through a network of roads that literally “go through” the existing buildings, generating new spaces of relationship that are necessary in this city.

New green network with urban. prospection.network, Calatayud (Spain) with project group: Clara Gimeno, Inés Rodríguez, Miriam Aparicio Function: participation in the desing process, model making and rendering. Urbanism

After a period of analysis of the working area, Calatayud city, we have done a research about its potentials and weaknesses, and we got a line of work that it is going to be the river that crosses the city and surrounding area. The river and its attached space, the future green network, will organise the urban existing fabric, and connect the natural component of the emplacement to the architectural one.

The development of the green network offers new opportunities for the city and one is going to be the design of a skatepark, since the current one is in a condition of abandon. The equipment seeks to create a multifunctional space, as future public space of Calatayud. Due to its situation near to the river and to the limit between the city and the agrarian fabric, it proposes a place where the concrete pavement meets the nature, creating an artificial topography for the enjoyment of all.

Where yesterday at five o’clock Gijón (Spain) Competition “Autumn of the recycling”, October 2012 with Fireflies in the Garden collective: Dámaris Fernández García Artistic intervention

A public contest promoted by the Town hall of Gijon, where the aim was to use waste materials to adorn the city or to make it to think. The municipal company of recycling, Emulsa, facilitated the materials in order that eight artistic groups could do artistic interventions in different points of the city. It is not a conceptual installation, only we wanted to give color and happiness to a small square in Gijón, and with a low budget. After three days of the installation, only three chairs and the garlands were staying: the people had removed everything. In the end the recycling was obtained. Taking advantage of the opportunity to transform a public space of the city for some days, we use the interventation as an exhibition space of emergent artists, where the people could meet the wonderful drawings of Virginia Fernandez and Natalia Rosales; or with Danai Gnoki’s beautiful story, and Irene Robles’s poems. It was very interesting to see people interfering with the intervention during the whole process; from the most curious (in the main, elders) that were approaching during the assembly, doing all kinds of questions and comments on what it happened in the square along they walk daily; the children recreating different scenes during a evening of games; up to the “happy night people” who decided to give a new life to the furniture.

Rebuilding urban voids Oporto (Portugal) Competition, December 2011 selected project with Fireflies in the Garden collective: Dámaris Fernández García, Dictinio de Castillo- Elejabeytia Gómez, Ana Fernández García Housing typology

The assignment is to reoccupy the existing urban void in the inner city of Oporto, with a new housing typology. Our Uchuva house sets up a new urban space where dwelling is dematerialized; an open space is made with one set of cables and trusses, as a large tree that can be climbed and where you can sit back in their branches. A new, more interesting meeting and relationship between public and private space is created.

Knitting spaces Calama(Spain) Competition, March 2013 Public intervention

“Knitting spaces” is an opportunity where, following a “bottom-up” strategy, citizens are able to build with their own hands and imagination, the spaces they inhabit every day. Taking advantage of weaknesses of Calama, it creates new opportunities, with the wise example of their culture in terms of adaptation to hostile conditions. Lack of living spaces, where most of them are in a degraded state, extreme climate where there is a deficit of green areas, create a framework for its citizens unattractive. “Knitting spaces” is a call to the people to occupy the spaces of the city through small actions that improve their quality. In the most popular areas in the city, such as the market, schools and shopping centers, street furniture objects appear whose function is to create an attention signal and propose solutions to current problems of public space. These objects will be made by the residents of the neighborhood, through the organization of workshops, where they are taught the basics for building designs, always open to new input and ideas, techniques or materials.

A PIECE ON THE NEIGHBOURHOOD MADE BY THE NEIGHBOR THURSDAY OCTOBER 31

We propose an umbraculum for the light city, one alternative for the trees shadows during the first period of the autumn, when leaves star to fall. We want to “paint “on prospect green the city of the pave. But a soft green, use by the citizens to show their ideas (write thoughts, sometimes is easier if you do supported by the anonymity), dreams, to share with the world, inaccessible issues for that moment. They are flying in the sky, but they will fall day a day, the same with the leaves. When they fall people may read the human projection, so the projection will be accessible and may be followed. We would like to propose a kind of “green week” profiting the good weather that we have in September, and the green shadow of our trees. We will do a popular lunch, a “dejeneur sur l’herve”, below the protection of our projections dreams. As all good lead, our lead can not be only a ephemeral action that when is finished go to the rubbish. We want a life action, a close cycle; so as, our material will be recollected by the neighborhoods, “freguesia” in each case, and use in a workshop for a new life. For example, recycle as Christmas tree for an “economic” decoration for each neighborhood. With that, we achieve the relationship of the participants, working for the same goal.

Ville VPRO with office Doepel Strijkers architects, Rotterdam (Netherlands) with project group: Chantal Vos, Marco Gazzola, Danai Gkoni Function: participation in the desing process, model making and rendering. Interior desing

The goal is to create a new space in the ground floor of the Ville VPRO (MVRDV architects), to improve the conditions of the work space. The new layout attempts to solve the present problems of light, noise and draft; always respecting the original building design. The low budget requires to demolish as little as possible in the existing structure and reuses the demolished materials for the new layout. overview new layout with materials

“Rotterdam- people make the inner city” densification+ greenification= sustainable city with office Doepel Strijkers, Rotterdam (Netherlands) with project group: Lieke Genten, Marco Gazzola, Leon Zondervan, Danai Gkoni and Zsuzsanna Házi Function: translation of data into drawings and production of images Urbanism overview of potential new dwellings and urban green in the inner city, 2040

The aim is to explore strategies of densification and creation of new green spaces to increase the number of dwellings and improve the quality and the sustainability of the inner city living. Our job was based on strategies and projects that have already been implemented by Rotterdam’s inhabitants as they make it “ the place to be”. This illustrated publication is a product of the Municipality of Rotterdam’ s participation in the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam 2012.

Green Machine with office Doepel Strijkers, Rotterdam (Nettherlands) with project group: Chantal Vos, Marco Gazzola, Leon Zondervan, Zsuzsanna Haki, Lieke Genten, Wil Van Twuijver Function: participation in the production and montage of the green machine. Urbanism

Green machine is a strategy of a masterplan for the area Tarwewijk in the South of Rotterdam, with a multicultural community with considerable unemployment and illiteracy, besides a high vacancy rate. The aim of the project is reviving the suburb through a bottom-up service economy that would introduce more contact and density into the neighbourhood. The green machine connects urban agriculture in the Tarwewijk to children, and it is set up because of the social infrastructure that the playground embodies in this position. Moreover, among the members are owners of allotment gardens. All the ingredients needed for urban agriculture are facilitated: rainwater collection, rainwater storage, watering, year-round composting, as well as indoor and ground based cultivation.
