306-310 Ross Avenue, located in the Exchange District and downtown Winnipeg, holds rich connections to the completion of Canada’s first transcontinential railway. The building being a part of the growing warehouse sector in the city is mainly known for housing a clothing manufacturer company, Leadlay Manufacturing.

1899

311 Ross Avenue is currently being used as a warehouse, however the original use was for Paulin Chambers Co. This collage intends to bring viewers back to when Paulins was a well-known local brand that made biscuits and candies. Leaving Cuban Lunch (a Paulins original) in colour was intentional, since the business was shut down and all their baked goods were discontinued. However, finding out that Canadians not only within Manitoba loved the chocolates but were so determind to bring it back for all to enjoy makes this building even more rich with connections. The Cuban Lunch chocolate is now produced in Alberta by a family who loved the candy.

200 Princess Street located on the corner of Princess and Ross was most recently well known for housing HutK and Cosmans, both being furniture companies. The collage aims to show the historical usage of the building which was for wool and hide, this usage connects back to Winnipeg’s vital role in the fur trade industry.

1984

201 Princess Street faces the opening of Ross Avenue, its presence is an important cultural reminder for the area as Winnipeg’s Chinatown core.

The complex was built in the late 1900’s, almost 80-100 years after 310, 311 Ross were built, as it was for redevelopment for Chinatown. The collage is filled with partial scenes of the well-known Chinese Gardens that are just behind the building. The Chinese Gardens house a traditional Lion Dance to further connect with the culture and immigrants from Asian countries in Winnipeg,

Employment Sectors within The Exchange District

Exchange District Education and Income Demographics

While looking at the Census data it helped provide us with a clearer understanding of the human and cultural context within the site. From visible minorities, generational status, to languages spoken, these numbers along with the education and income demographics have allowed our group to know more about the site.

We can see that the Exchange District population is made up of a majority of younger and single people. Age combined with income allow us to see that this area is on the higher income than Winnipeg’s overall averages, most likely due to the high number of post-secondary graduates.

Modes of Transport Looking at the 2016 Census for the Exchange District, it was important to see how people in the Exchange travel throughout the city. While many people own and drive their own vehicle a surprising amount walk rather than use public transport. This led us to not dive too deep into bus routes, as the blue line on this collage represents downtown Winnipeg’s bus routes. Rather, we further explored the path of travel through a vehicle, bike and walking paths abstractly through collages.
