By Kelly Johnson The Observer During the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a lot of activity behind the frontlines. One such activity; not visible to the public eye, is a sewing project that is keeping frontline medical personnel safe.

Evelyn Vandenberg of Alameda is donating her time and skills to make PPE (personal protective equipment) for frontline medical professionals and has been very busy sewing up facemasks, surgical caps, headbands and clothing bags.

The volunteer effort is made possible with the help of others in the area, where she and her husband live and farm north Alameda.

Vandenberg was looking for pattern ideas for a sewing project on Facebook, when she came across a post discussing the need for PPE in the battle against COVID-19. She discovered a page called “Canada Sews” that was started by a group of volunteers in

Ontario, who were volunteering their time to make PPE. She contacted the group and was put in touch with the co-ordinator for the Saskatchewan volunteer group.

Each province has been given a list of various needs by hospitals and care homes who are searching for necessary supplies for frontline workers in Saskatchewan and across the country.

The PPE she is sewing is made of heavy cotton with a tight weave, generally found in fabric used for quilting, which is being donated by others in the area. The donated material, some that is already precut from a standard pattern, is stitched on her industrial sewing machine. She has received a donation from an individual for shipping costs, donations of bias tape and buttons, which are required in the manufacturing of the PPE and welcomes donations from anyone that can help in any way or capacity with the effort.

So far, Vandenberg has shipped items to La Ronge, SK, Kelowna B.C., Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current and a hospital in

Vandenberg started the project about three weeks ago and so far has shipped over 250 pieces of PPE and at the time of this writing, has enough fabric for about 200 more masks and surgical caps.

She has spent as many as 10 hours a day sewing, as well as taxiing her husband and son around as they plant this year’s crop. One mask takes about 10 to 15 minutes of sewing time.

Currently she is organizing for another request for a 1,000 masks that are needed in Northern Saskatchewan and she has the call out for more fabric donations, of darker coloured 100% cotton.

Making it through the 2020 pandemic is truly a community effort that everyone can be involved in.

There are many true heroes on the frontlines, as well as behind the lines and we are all in this together as Canadians.

The Vandenbergs immigrated to Canada from Holland in 2006, initially farming in Vauxhall, AB before taking up roots in 2012 on the farm in the Alameda area and are proof positive of this country’s spirit to help others in times of need.

By Linda Wegner The ability of a two-letter preposition to change one’s perspective is powerful.

As I mused on what I, we and the world have faced over the past and probably coming months, a well-known verse of Scripture took on new meaning for me this week. It also reminded me of how we need to read God’s Word without prejudice or preconceived interpretation. Huh? What am I talking about? Let me explain.

First of all, the definition of a preposition (although I’m sure you already know this): A preposition is a word that links a noun, pro-

noun, or noun phrase to some other part of the sentence. In His Word God assures us that “in all these things, we are more than conquerors” but sadly, there have been many who have taken this promise totally out of context and used it for their own advantage. Have you, like me, ever heard of unscrupulous people promising deliverance from physical healing for “an offering”? I won’t say any more but suffice it to point again to the Scripture that promised deliverance and peace right in the middle of our trials. And just as wonderful, Jesus already paid the price!

Going through the current pandemic and,

for many of us, the discipline of self-isolation has been frustrating and even depressing. I admit to being a social person and going days on end without riding the bus or having tea with friends has been difficult. This is where I am holding on to that glorious promise that in all these things, not just after they’re over and not dependent on a generous offering, we have the unsurpassed blessing and assurance of God’s presence in our lives.

“Yet amid all these things we are more than conquerors and gain a surpassing victory through Him Who loved us.” Romans 8:37 Lonely? He’s there!

Moe between a rock and hard place

By Murray Mandryk As COVID-19 restrictions continue on, Premier Scott Moe finds himself caught between a rock and hard place.

There are many who live have limited sympathy for the position the Premier is now in.

We are all caught between that rock and that hard place.

For whatever flaws so many self-appointed experts have found in Moe’s re-opening, credit Moe for taking a cautious approach in what seems a generally well-thought out plan.

Unfortunately, it has left Moe is caught between that rock and hard place _ those saying he’s moving too slowly in re-opening the economy versus those saying he is endangering lives by moving too quickly.

For those of you unfamiliar, Moe’s re-opening plans begin this week with dental services and recreational activities like golf, fishing and camping.

What might have been lost in the criticism over why golfing and fishing would seem to be the first priority of the Saskatchewan Party government for reopening is the abundance of caution.

Golfing, fishing and camping are self-isolating activities by nature. The government even went so far as to restrict golfers reaching into holes after putting or ensuring that people from different families/households are not allowed in the same boat.

This first stage would be followed by the second phase starting on May 19 on the Victoria Day long weekend that will include other retail like clothing and footware stores and barber and hairdresser salons.

The next three phases have no specific dates attached to them, but will include increasing public gathering restrictions to 15 people, then 30 people and then unlimited gatherings as the government gradually opens up other businesses like bars and restaurants (initially, to half-capacity) and ends restrictions on public parks.

Unspoken in all this is the fact that the stillrather-limited measures in the third phase (the limited bar openings, that will still require six-foot social distancing requirements) won’t even begin until at least June. And that may optimistic, depend on the province not having another outbreak.

The day after the Premier unveiled his re-opening plans, Saskatchewan Health disclosed a major outbreak in the north that necessitated a travel to what is, essentially, half the province.

As we would later learn, the outbreak was centred in the struggling northern First Nations/Metis village of La Loche, a community of 3,000 people five hours north of Saskatoon that now accounts for 40 per cent of province’s active COVID-19 cases.

Moe says it’s really no different than what would happen if this outbreak occurred in a rural village or town. Some are sceptical of this, but it does underscore the difficult place Moe finds himself in.

The longer the restrictions are in place, the more public frustrations grow.

For example, the Saskatchewan Health Authority last week could not address when we might see the health system again provide elective surgeries.

This is a frustration for many, given that dental check ups and far less important things hair like hair salons, cosmetologists and tattoo parlours are re-opening far sooner.

Last week, 65-year-old Aberdeen accountant Garth Hetterly told the Leader-Post that he has been waiting since October for bone spur surgery in his neck and that he is now off work as a result.

This pandemic has put a lot of us in tough spot.

But the tough spot that Moe still finds himself in has a lot to do with the fact that SHA is still offering dire warnings about what would happen if we did lift restrictions.

In its latest modelling projections last week, the SHA was still talking about 254,756 Saskatchewan cases and 3,075 deaths if we did away with all current restrictions right now.

That, too, is controversial but it does underscores one thing: We all remain in a tough spot.

A soggy picnic not so bad We packed a picnic basket and headed out, highly anticipating the surprise we had planned for our mom. It was July of last year and she was flying into Edmonton from Abbotsford to attend a family reunion. My sister and I headed to Alberta to pick her up and spend a couple of days touring the area where we used to live.

It was supposed to start Shelley Luedtke with supper at a picnic spot we enjoyed when my sister and I were little. However, a delayed flight and then a turn in the weather meant we pulled into the park later than we had planned, and amidst a heavy downpour. Sitting in the picnic shelter as the rain pelted the area was less a journey in nostalgia and more an exercise in controlling the shivering.

Sometimes things just don’t go as planned.

Whatever the reason, the reality ends up being different than the picture we had in our mind. This is the experience of many who had been busy planning graduation ceremonies, proms and weddings until restrictions brought those plans to a halt or required creative adjustments and the recognition that it isn’t going to be what they thought.

Of course that extends to Mother’s Day, as families everywhere find themselves preparing for a very different day than they could have imagined. A survey of 8, 294 adults conducted between April 1-6 found that people feel Mother’s Day is even more important this year and are determined to do something special from a distance, on average spending more this year than last. Analysts say what is driving the increase is that the gifts of choice are higher ticket items such as electronics, restaurant gift cards, and grocery deliveries; while housewares and gardening tools are also popular since they are gifts that can be put to good use at home.

experience a very different Mother’s Day than the fancy cards and beautiful bouquets suggest. The day doesn’t look like the image many have in mind. Not just this year—but every year.

There are women whose role and hopes look different than when they first anticipated becoming a mom. Physical or emotional complexities are part of a parenting picture they did not expect.

Mothers raising children who will always require full-time care. Mothers who have sat by their child’s hospital bedside willing recovery to come. Mothers who have walked their young adult into an addictions center seeking help. Mothers whose visits are limited by the boundaries established by agencies, or ones that take place separated by glass. Mothers who have stood graveside doing the unimaginable.

Or consider the families navigating a day set aside for a mother who no longer remembers them.

A mother who can’t call them by name or recall the memories her offspring would love nothing more than to share again. Or mothers who for whatever reason are unable to fulfill their role, resulting in painful outcomes they and their children alone understand. Or women whose dreams for a child never came to be. For all of these, the expression of motherhood and Mother’s Day is different than expected, but they have sought to do the best they can in situations others have little frame of reference.

Our less than stellar picnic with our mom last summer was simply a funny turn of events. Far more significant is the way we thought we would be spending Mother’s Day 2020. When those plans were set in motion we never could have anticipated the situation we now find ourselves in.

If you are sad that you need to wave at your mom through a window this year or if your heart is breaking because your only option is a video chat, there is something precious to hold on to. That sadness--that heartbreak--is being driven by something of tremendous value--a relationship with your mom. Which in the end is something that should be celebrated any way we can every day of the year.

That’s my outlook.

4 easy habits to adopt for a greener planet

According to a 2019 report by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), we have about 12 years to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions before it’s too late to prevent a potentially catastrophic rise in global temperature. As a private citizen, you can help by adopting these four habits.

1. Reduce meat consumption Meat production is highly inefficient, especially when it comes to red meat. Limiting your meat consumption is a good way to reduce your carbon footprint and to make

your diet a bit healthier. Start by eating at least one meatfree meal a day.

2. Reduce carbon emissions Consider walking to work, biking or taking the bus. If driving is the only practical way you can get to work, you may be able to telecommute a few times a week. Try to get out of the habit of driving everywhere and when you do get behind the wheel, don’t idle your car.

3. Reduce waste Identify disposable things you use and try to replace them with their reusable equivalents. Buy a stainless

steel or glass portable cup, replace saran wrap with washable beeswax wrap and start collecting reusable grocery bags. You can also swap disposable razors and straws for their reusable counterparts.

4. Reduce power usage Another easy habit to adopt is to simply turn off and unplug electronics that aren’t in use. Even when they’re turned off, things like phone chargers, Blu-ray players and gaming consoles still draw power. Also, be careful to turn off the lights when you leave a room.

By starting small, you can make a big difference.

Conjunctivitis: causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment Conjunctivitis, more commonly known as pink eye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane that covers the inside of the eyelid and the white part of the eye.

Causes Most cases of conjunctivitis are the result of a virus. However, it also can be caused by a bacterial infection, an allergy or a chemical coming into contact with the eye. In a newborn, a blocked tear duct may be the cause of conjunctivitis.

Symptoms Regardless of the cause, symptoms include: • Itching, burning or a gritty sensation in the eyes • Excessive tear production • Reddish or pink eyes • Swelling of the eyelids • Blurry vision and light sensitivity Infectious conjunctivitis will also be characterized by an aqueous, transparent discharge if caused by a virus or a mucus-like yellow discharge if caused by bacteria.

Diagnosis Conjunctivitis is typically diagnosed through a simple exam and analysis of the patient’s health history. More advanced test-

ing such as tissue smears or cultures may be required for chronic cases or those that don’t respond to treatment.

Treatment The condition typically resolves on its own within a few days. However, infectious forms are highly contagious, so it’s important to consult a medical professional to receive proper diagnosis and treatment.

For bacterial cases, antibiotic drops and unguents may be prescribed. Viral cases have to run their course, but artificial tears will help manage symptoms. Finally, allergy- and chemical- related cases are

treated with antihistamine eye drops, along with the removal of the offending substance from the patient’s environment when possible.

If conjunctivitis lasts for more than a week, return to your doctor for further assessment.

Infectious conjunctivitis guidelines To avoid spreading the infection, wash your hands frequently and don’t touch your eyes. You should also clean your pillowcases daily and throw out anything that came into contact with your eyes such as disposable contacts and makeup brushes.

I received notice that our grandson Dustin Cowan had completed his Recruit Training Course at the Saskatchewan Police College, U of Regina on May 1, 2020.

Constable Dustin Cowan will begin his employment on May 10 with the Corman Park Police Force, near Saskatoon.

Jeff Cowan, Regina spent a few hours on May 2 afternoon visiting with his parents, Gray and Edel, his brother Tim, Shelly and Ainsley, as well as with friends Grant and Jenny before he headed back to Carlyle for supper.

those on the “frontline” workers who are out working and treating the sick and ill all day every day. But they are out there five-days a week dealing with the mail, sorting and delivering OUR mail, and of course also dealing directly with the public whether it’s handing out parcels, in-coming and out-going mail. I’d like to think that it’s just a case of being over looked somehow by the media.

You see in the cities and larger centers the mail is delivered directly to residences, offices or to community mail boxes and the carriers aren’t really seen, not like in small towns it is us, the public who must go to the post office, pick up our own mail, and of course often greet our post mistress/ master either to pick up parcels or send out the out-going mail or just a say, “Hi – How are you today?”. Say have you noticed? I surely have – the huge quantity of parcels that are sitting in the post office waiting to be picked up. Now these parcels are handled not just once, but many times, when they arrive, recorded and again when they are picked up.

Now I for one wouldn’t want to be unable to get my mail whether its letters, papers or parcels,

it’s a great way to keep in touch and keep ourselves entertained. So here’s to ALL the Canada Post employees – thank you guys and gals!

Well another weekend with not much accomplished – I did a little yard work on Saturday, but gosh darn it was a little on the cool side so didn’t stick around outside for very long, guess getting soft in my old age (ha). If it’s going to rain I wish it would do it and be done, however a nice little shower would be nice to have everything washed off. However Hubby has been out playing in the dirt and points out that the ground is very wet, especially in places so we really don’t need any rain.

But a shower would also help to dampen the long dry winter grass and help with the danger of fires. Oh, we’re just never satisfied (ha). Sunday was spent watching television – there was curling on the sports channel all day, and I mean all day. I sure did get my fill of curling and enjoyed it even it was reruns. One of these days it will be nice to see actually see live sports once again. Makes you wonder what’s going to happen when the football season rolls around – I’d even be willing to watch

reruns then too. Only time will tell.

Once again it’s fairly quiet around, everyone still being cautious and keeping mostly to themselves and their property, only going out to pick up their mail or some groceries, just the essentials really. By the news reports they are beginning to open up the economy slowly – so hey folks it’s sounding and looking good – but let’s not rush it too soon – better to be safe than sorry and gosh forbid if we should have another outbreak. In the meantime folks let’s remember – to Keep Physical Distancing – Stay Healthy – Be Safe and Take Care, we WILL get through this together.

Word has been received of the passing of Bruce Norsworthy of Carlyle. He passed away on Apr. 29 at the age of 72 years. He leaves wife, Lynn, brothers, Jim and Don(Dayle) nephews Jason(Sue) and Tyler(Lyndaey) and niece Kayla. There will be a service at a later date with interment in the Glen Morris Cemetery. Bruce was the administrator of the Wawota Hospital for many years.

Happy birthday to Evelyn Bullock of Maryfield who recently celebrated her 100th birthday. The town organized a drive-by parade with a fire engine and over 70 vehicles. Len Downer and his son, Troy provided some live music in the afternoon. She curled in her 90’s and still loves to dance. She was born the year of the pandemic of the Spanish Flu and has lived to see another pandemic in the Corona virus.

Congratulations to Deb Saville who retired from her position as administrator of the R.M. of Walpole on Apr. 30.

She moved to Wawota over 20 years ago. She started her career at the

R.M. of Reno in 1995, then obtained her Class C Rural and Urban certificate 1998. In March of 2000 she began as the administrator of R.M.of Wawken. And in 2009 she received her Class A certificate. She became the administrator for the R.M. of Walpole for the next four years .

We have appreciated her involvement and hard work in the community and the United Church.

She was one of the original organizers in joining The Communities in Bloom.

At the Town and R.M. offices you will see Sherry Wight as Administrator of the Town, with Cayley Hamilton as assistant, Cheryl DeRoo as Administrator and Coralee Brehaut as assistant and for the R.M of Wawken, Katelyn Either with Heather Frederickson as assistant. Sounds like a good crew to me.

Happy birthday to Phil Weatherald on his 89th birthday and Doug Cudmore who was 85 last Saturday.

With changing times we are filling some of our time with different interests. I have enjoyed some entertainment on the Internet

recently. A few weeks I back watched TJ Anchor (Trystan Meyers), who entertained for an hour with his DJ skills and chit-chat. I have also been enjoying Jane Doull (former UC minister in Wawota) who has a brief message every day at 4:00 p.m. She wore a blue tartan scarf last week in memory of the many who lost their lives in the mass shooting in Nova Scotia. Her messages are thoughtful and reassuring. And my favorite was 5-year-old Ellie Shire of Regina who did a story hour type reading by herself. She read a story about the animals having a party and the snake baked the cake. Party, party, party.

The congregation of the Wawota United Church viewed a church service last Sunday on Zoom. It was complete with scripture readings by members, prayers, music and reflection with Roy Bortolotto. It was a great experience as it has been many weeks since we have been able to meet at the church. We are appreciative of those in the church who step up and organize and participate in our services.

Carlyle Memorial Hall gets a facelift

By Kelly Johnson The Observer The Carlyle Memorial Hall is getting a make over. The facelift is a joint effort by the Town of Carlyle, the Hall Board and The Cornerstone Theatre Group. The town is paying $7,300.00 for the renovation work, which is being done by 5th Street Construction. They have removed the old exterior brick and have made the necessary repairs for the application of the new stucco front.

The Hall is having the doors refinished by Carlyle Collision who had the winning bid for the job (which only asked for the cost of the paint).

The Hall is bearing that cost to the project. Also of note, is there will be a nice sized billboard space to accommodate advertising for the many events the Memorial Hall hosts each year.

The Hall currently houses Big Daddy’s Barbershop, Hair by N Brown, is the venue for The Cornerstone Theatre Group, who also run the movie theatre during the winter months.

Doug Waldner, chairperson of the Memorial Hall Board, anticipates that repairs are likely to be finished by the middle of May, weather co-operating. He adds, “I really want to thank the town, 5th Street Construction and Carlyle Collision for their contribution to this project.”

Spring is in the air . . . and land Kelly Johnson The Observer Some farmers in southeast Saskatchewan have begun seeding crops for the 2020 growing season.

This year conditions have made for a little later start, due to moisture and the lateness of the frost coming out of the ground.

In dryer years, the timeline for seeding would be three to four weeks. This year’s moisture and frost conditions could stretch the time needed to six weeks for some producers, as the weather is always the determining factor.

Each condition a farmer faces has benefits, as well as setbacks. The good moisture conditions provide for the prospects of a bumper crop, but can cause delays due to getting stuck more often with equipment, meaning less acres getting planted each day.

According to Dan Reaves of Precision Ag in Carlyle, “Crops will pull moisture from a depth of 100 centimetres and data collected from the soil moisture probes done last fall by Precision Ag, soil moisture in the area is very good.”

With timing and weather being the deciding factor to harvest a bumper crop, with average soil moisture it takes nine inches of timely rains to produce a bumper crop. The soil moisture is optimum to begin this year’s planting and farmers could realize bumper crops with about 50% of the expected rainfall, should it come in a timely fashion.

Oxbow digital Community Art Gallery is live

By Ana Bykhovskaia abykhovskaia@estevanmercury.ca The quarantine made creative minds work and reorganize quickly and brought up many new opportunities. The Oxbow Arts and Cultural Committee first organized a successful online music concert and has now launched their first Community Art Gallery in a digital format.

Comprised of artists representing a variety of mediums from the Oxbow area, the gallery went live Sunday evening and will be available for a week. The digital album was added to the committee’s social networks that are open for public viewing to be enjoyed from home.

Megan Andersen, who took on inviting the artists to participate and organized the gallery, talked to the Mercury about the project.

“I’ve been in contact with several artists to see if they were willing to submit some works they already had. They emailed back to myself and I (uploaded) it through Facebook and Instagram. It’s one album to look at,” said Andersen.

The gallery is comprised of images of various art including photography, unique woodwork, collage, oil and watercolour paintings, and a few sketches.

Andersen, Kim Friesen, Jeremy Maffenbeier, Leonard and Evan Moncrief, Lynn Wood and Doug Sully partook in the Community Art Gallery project.

Some of the artists are currently living in Oxbow, Alameda and Glen Ewen, while others were born there but are now reside in Estevan or somewhere else.

“We have people who live in the States, in B.C. that have submitted

their work. One of our photographers has entered photos of her own area, so we got some really nice rural Saskatchewan work,” said Andersen.

Forty art pieces were entered for the project. Each picture has a description, including the artist’s name, the medium and explanation of what it is.

It was the first digital Community Art Gallery, and Andersen said that if it goes well, they’d like to have a second one in the future or maybe even turn it into a monthly event for as long as life is affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. But the future digital galleries may be organized a bit differently.

“This one we did by invitation, otherwise next ones we will probably open up to anyone else who might be interested,” said Andersen.

The album will be available to view from April 26 to May 3, and then it will be archived on their Facebook page.

According to the Saskatchewan Crime Watch Advisory Network, on April 20 at approximately 4 p.m., an officer with the Carlyle

Carlyle, Arcola and Carievale players join U18 AAA Bears

By David Willbert Estevan Mercury The Estevan Eclipse Downhole Solutions U18 AAA Bears have announced the commitment of their first 12 players, including players from Carlyle, Arcola and Carievale.

The Bears will have players who have played at the U18 level (formerly midget) for one or two seasons, and some who spent last season at the U15 level (formerly bantam).

Cade Bendtsen, a 2003-born defenceman from Carlyle who played last season with the Estevan Apex midget AA Bruins, has committed to play for the Bears. Bendtsen had six goals and 25 points in 31 games played last season.

Forward Carson Birnie, a 2005-born forward from Arcola, also joined the Bears. He played with the Regina Monarchs bantam AA team last season and had 28 goals and 67 points in 29 games played.

Turner McMillen, a 2003-born forward from Carievale with two years of midget AAA experience, is also joining the Bears. He spent last season with

the Prince Albert Mintos midget AAA program and had 15 goals and 39 points in 44 games played.

Bears head coach and general manager Jeff Smith is pleased with the quality of talent the club has been able to attract, even though they didn’t have the benefit of a spring camp.

“There’s a lot of kids who wanted to come back and play for their local team, which is so nice to see and hear,” said Smith.

When that first player commitment came in, it was a relief, but it was a reminder that now it’s for real and an actual team is being formed. His entire staff was watching to see who had signed, and Smith is looking forward to building excitement for the team.

The 12 players they announced are those they had focused on, and now they’re pursuing the remaining handful of players to round out the roster.

“There might be a kid or two that slips through the cracks in the north that we’re keeping eyes on.

It’s always nice to have those extra spots just in case someone does come available.”

Fast Trucking shows support for laid-off workers with $50,000 in grocery gift cards

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury Fast Trucking Service has found a way to support the employees that they had to lay off during these challenging times.

The long-time Carnduff-based trucking company, which moves drilling rigs, hauls frac equipment and other oil rig-related equipment, was forced to lay off 250 workers earlier this month due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the price of oil. But they wanted to find a way to support their employees.

President Dennis Day, whose family operates Fast Trucking, said he knew that some employees were going to be in need of help.

“I didn’t know, when there was a million people going on unemployment and half the country’s shut down, when my guys were going to get any money,” said Day. He thought that if he bought them each a gift card from the co-op, they could get the groceries they need until the government support kicks in.

Day went to the co-op in Carnduff and ran into one of his employees, who was carrying a 10-pound ham and three dozen buns.

“You know what he’s eating the next 10 days, and that’s when I thought I am going to do this.”

He talked to his brother Larry, the rest of his family and his managers, and asked them what they

thought of the gift card idea. They agreed it was a great concept.

Day phoned the co-op, asked for $50,000 in gift cards, and wrote a letter to each employee from his family. Each employee was to receive $250 in gift cards, but Day managed to get them even more value.

“I’m a business guy, so I phoned the co-op and said if I buy $50,000 worth of gift cards, what kind of deal are you going to give me? And they said ‘We’ll give you a five per cent discount.’ So I said ‘Don’t give me the five per cent discount, add it on to each employee’s card. So they got $260.”

Day noted that he received more than 120 phone calls, text messages and emails the day after the gift cards were sent out. Other people stopped him in the street to thank him.

The gift cards are good for any co-op location, since Fast Trucking has locations in Estevan and Swift Current, in addition to Carnduff, and they have employees elsewhere.

Approximately 350 people work for the business.

Fast Trucking has been trying to maintain some operations during the pandemic and the oil price crash, but Day said they have had some trucks parked since 2014, when the price of oil went through a significant drop in value.

Redvers artist finds different types of inspiration in fluid pandemic world

By Ana Bykhovskaia abykhovskaia@estevanmercury.ca Born in Gravelbourg and now a resident of Redvers, artist Chylisse Marchand has lately experienced both the challenges and the advantages of the times of self-isolation.

As a response to intervention (RTI) teacher, she continued to work with students from home and also keeps the school page going, but the quarantine also allowed more time for art and brought different sources of inspiration.

“Lately, my inspiration has been very much COVID-19 related. I’ve been focusing on things that bring me peace – thus my recent works with succulents. I find these flowers to be so peaceful and beautiful,” said Marchand in an interview with the Mercury.

“When I paint, I can escape the current reality and jump into a totally different world. While working, I tend to listen to podcasts – some uplifting mindful podcasts, some podcasts exposing the deep and dark history of Canada and others that are light and entertaining. Whatever mood I am in, art grounds me and brings me peace.”

Her love for art began during her early years.

Being a quiet child, she spent a lot of her time dabbling with the arts and for a number of years, she took watercolour lessons from Gravelbourg artist Avis Frank. Marchand pursued visual communications at Medicine Hat College in Alberta, but then she chose to follow in the footsteps of her parents who were teachers and got her education and fine arts degree from the University of Lethbridge.

Spending most of the time at home allowed Marchand to do a lot of things simultaneously, and while work still takes a significant part of the day she had much more time for art.

“I find that with this whole thing, I’ve been able to focus on my art more probably than I ever had before because we cannot really do anything,” said Marchand.

One day Marchand wants to be a tattoo artist if she can, and tattoo-style paintings are common within her works. One such piece she created under the influence of the earlier news about the pandemic a few weeks ago.

“For me, my work (as a teacher) is so important and being able to see my kids at school is so important, that I was really, really sad and I was in such a negative place that I wanted to do something that would speak to the whole COVID thing,” said Marchand.

“This one I wanted to do to commemorate all of the heroes that are out there right now working through this very fluid time. I wanted to include basically everything that I could think of that is going through my mind.”

She went on to explain that the sand-glass is a symbol of frustration around the timeframe of the pandemic that overtook the world, symbolized by a globe. The triangles represent past, present and future, and DNA speaks to the notion of the virus affecting human beings. There is also a medical stethoscope to recognize healthcare workers. Roses signify love, gratitude and appreciation and a wing stands for freedom. There are also a few circles that look like bull’s eyes.

“It’s hard to explain what was going through my

head at that time with that one. But I just thought that we were all getting hit and we were all part of the bull’s eyes,” said Marchand.

Some other recent works Marchand did are completely different. They are light and peaceful.

“Sometimes with my other pieces … I need to do a light floral piece just to kind of escape the reality. Right now, the reality is so fluid and it’s just so strange and I struggle with grounding myself. So painting is a way for me to escape that,” said Marchand.

When it comes to floral art and lately the succulents, Marchand usually looks through many beautiful pictures, finding her inspiration in them, and then combines the positive vibes into an oil or watercolour painting.

And while the self-isolation period turned to be very productive, Marchand still cannot wait for the end of the quarantine.

“I’m very much a people person and I’m very outgoing, I like to volunteer throughout my community and run paint classes and do all these extra things. So I’m really looking forward to when quarantine is done,” said Marchand, adding that she hopes to continue painting a lot when life gets back to normal, but the first thing she wants to do as soon as it’s allowed is to go camping with her two daughters and friends, which promises to also result in more sketches and pencil art she usually does when out enjoying nature.

If it is still happening this summer, Marchand also plans to show her work at the Moose Mountain Provincial Park Artist Colony in July.

By Kelly Johnson The Observer During the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a lot of activity behind the frontlines. One such activity; not visible to the public eye, is a sewing project that is keeping frontline medical personnel safe.

Evelyn Vandenberg of Alameda is donating her time and skills to make PPE (personal protective equipment) for frontline medical professionals and has been very busy sewing up facemasks, surgical caps, headbands and clothing bags.

The volunteer effort is made possible with the help of others in the area, where she and her husband live and farm north Alameda.

Vandenberg was looking for pattern ideas for a sewing project on Facebook, when she came across a post discussing the need for PPE in the battle against COVID-19. She discovered a page called “Canada Sews” that was started by a group of volunteers in

Ontario, who were volunteering their time to make PPE. She contacted the group and was put in touch with the co-ordinator for the Saskatchewan volunteer group.

Each province has been given a list of various needs by hospitals and care homes who are searching for necessary supplies for frontline workers in Saskatchewan and across the country.

The PPE she is sewing is made of heavy cotton with a tight weave, generally found in fabric used for quilting, which is being donated by others in the area. The donated material, some that is already precut from a standard pattern, is stitched on her industrial sewing machine. She has received a donation from an individual for shipping costs, donations of bias tape and buttons, which are required in the manufacturing of the PPE and welcomes donations from anyone that can help in any way or capacity with the effort.

So far, Vandenberg has shipped items to La Ronge, SK, Kelowna B.C., Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current and a hospital in

Vandenberg started the project about three weeks ago and so far has shipped over 250 pieces of PPE and at the time of this writing, has enough fabric for about 200 more masks and surgical caps.

She has spent as many as 10 hours a day sewing, as well as taxiing her husband and son around as they plant this year’s crop. One mask takes about 10 to 15 minutes of sewing time.

Currently she is organizing for another request for a 1,000 masks that are needed in Northern Saskatchewan and she has the call out for more fabric donations, of darker coloured 100% cotton.

Making it through the 2020 pandemic is truly a community effort that everyone can be involved in.

There are many true heroes on the frontlines, as well as behind the lines and we are all in this together as Canadians.

The Vandenbergs immigrated to Canada from Holland in 2006, initially farming in Vauxhall, AB before taking up roots in 2012 on the farm in the Alameda area and are proof positive of this country’s spirit to help others in times of need.

By Linda Wegner The ability of a two-letter preposition to change one’s perspective is powerful.

As I mused on what I, we and the world have faced over the past and probably coming months, a well-known verse of Scripture took on new meaning for me this week. It also reminded me of how we need to read God’s Word without prejudice or preconceived interpretation. Huh? What am I talking about? Let me explain.

First of all, the definition of a preposition (although I’m sure you already know this): A preposition is a word that links a noun, pro-

noun, or noun phrase to some other part of the sentence. In His Word God assures us that “in all these things, we are more than conquerors” but sadly, there have been many who have taken this promise totally out of context and used it for their own advantage. Have you, like me, ever heard of unscrupulous people promising deliverance from physical healing for “an offering”? I won’t say any more but suffice it to point again to the Scripture that promised deliverance and peace right in the middle of our trials. And just as wonderful, Jesus already paid the price!

Going through the current pandemic and,

for many of us, the discipline of self-isolation has been frustrating and even depressing. I admit to being a social person and going days on end without riding the bus or having tea with friends has been difficult. This is where I am holding on to that glorious promise that in all these things, not just after they’re over and not dependent on a generous offering, we have the unsurpassed blessing and assurance of God’s presence in our lives.

“Yet amid all these things we are more than conquerors and gain a surpassing victory through Him Who loved us.” Romans 8:37 Lonely? He’s there!

Moe between a rock and hard place

By Murray Mandryk As COVID-19 restrictions continue on, Premier Scott Moe finds himself caught between a rock and hard place.

There are many who live have limited sympathy for the position the Premier is now in.

We are all caught between that rock and that hard place.

For whatever flaws so many self-appointed experts have found in Moe’s re-opening, credit Moe for taking a cautious approach in what seems a generally well-thought out plan.

Unfortunately, it has left Moe is caught between that rock and hard place _ those saying he’s moving too slowly in re-opening the economy versus those saying he is endangering lives by moving too quickly.

For those of you unfamiliar, Moe’s re-opening plans begin this week with dental services and recreational activities like golf, fishing and camping.

What might have been lost in the criticism over why golfing and fishing would seem to be the first priority of the Saskatchewan Party government for reopening is the abundance of caution.

Golfing, fishing and camping are self-isolating activities by nature. The government even went so far as to restrict golfers reaching into holes after putting or ensuring that people from different families/households are not allowed in the same boat.

This first stage would be followed by the second phase starting on May 19 on the Victoria Day long weekend that will include other retail like clothing and footware stores and barber and hairdresser salons.

The next three phases have no specific dates attached to them, but will include increasing public gathering restrictions to 15 people, then 30 people and then unlimited gatherings as the government gradually opens up other businesses like bars and restaurants (initially, to half-capacity) and ends restrictions on public parks.

Unspoken in all this is the fact that the stillrather-limited measures in the third phase (the limited bar openings, that will still require six-foot social distancing requirements) won’t even begin until at least June. And that may optimistic, depend on the province not having another outbreak.

The day after the Premier unveiled his re-opening plans, Saskatchewan Health disclosed a major outbreak in the north that necessitated a travel to what is, essentially, half the province.

As we would later learn, the outbreak was centred in the struggling northern First Nations/Metis village of La Loche, a community of 3,000 people five hours north of Saskatoon that now accounts for 40 per cent of province’s active COVID-19 cases.

Moe says it’s really no different than what would happen if this outbreak occurred in a rural village or town. Some are sceptical of this, but it does underscore the difficult place Moe finds himself in.

The longer the restrictions are in place, the more public frustrations grow.

For example, the Saskatchewan Health Authority last week could not address when we might see the health system again provide elective surgeries.

This is a frustration for many, given that dental check ups and far less important things hair like hair salons, cosmetologists and tattoo parlours are re-opening far sooner.

Last week, 65-year-old Aberdeen accountant Garth Hetterly told the Leader-Post that he has been waiting since October for bone spur surgery in his neck and that he is now off work as a result.

This pandemic has put a lot of us in tough spot.

But the tough spot that Moe still finds himself in has a lot to do with the fact that SHA is still offering dire warnings about what would happen if we did lift restrictions.

In its latest modelling projections last week, the SHA was still talking about 254,756 Saskatchewan cases and 3,075 deaths if we did away with all current restrictions right now.

That, too, is controversial but it does underscores one thing: We all remain in a tough spot.

A soggy picnic not so bad We packed a picnic basket and headed out, highly anticipating the surprise we had planned for our mom. It was July of last year and she was flying into Edmonton from Abbotsford to attend a family reunion. My sister and I headed to Alberta to pick her up and spend a couple of days touring the area where we used to live.

It was supposed to start Shelley Luedtke with supper at a picnic spot we enjoyed when my sister and I were little. However, a delayed flight and then a turn in the weather meant we pulled into the park later than we had planned, and amidst a heavy downpour. Sitting in the picnic shelter as the rain pelted the area was less a journey in nostalgia and more an exercise in controlling the shivering.

Sometimes things just don’t go as planned.

Whatever the reason, the reality ends up being different than the picture we had in our mind. This is the experience of many who had been busy planning graduation ceremonies, proms and weddings until restrictions brought those plans to a halt or required creative adjustments and the recognition that it isn’t going to be what they thought.

Of course that extends to Mother’s Day, as families everywhere find themselves preparing for a very different day than they could have imagined. A survey of 8, 294 adults conducted between April 1-6 found that people feel Mother’s Day is even more important this year and are determined to do something special from a distance, on average spending more this year than last. Analysts say what is driving the increase is that the gifts of choice are higher ticket items such as electronics, restaurant gift cards, and grocery deliveries; while housewares and gardening tools are also popular since they are gifts that can be put to good use at home.

experience a very different Mother’s Day than the fancy cards and beautiful bouquets suggest. The day doesn’t look like the image many have in mind. Not just this year—but every year.

There are women whose role and hopes look different than when they first anticipated becoming a mom. Physical or emotional complexities are part of a parenting picture they did not expect.

Mothers raising children who will always require full-time care. Mothers who have sat by their child’s hospital bedside willing recovery to come. Mothers who have walked their young adult into an addictions center seeking help. Mothers whose visits are limited by the boundaries established by agencies, or ones that take place separated by glass. Mothers who have stood graveside doing the unimaginable.

Or consider the families navigating a day set aside for a mother who no longer remembers them.

A mother who can’t call them by name or recall the memories her offspring would love nothing more than to share again. Or mothers who for whatever reason are unable to fulfill their role, resulting in painful outcomes they and their children alone understand. Or women whose dreams for a child never came to be. For all of these, the expression of motherhood and Mother’s Day is different than expected, but they have sought to do the best they can in situations others have little frame of reference.

Our less than stellar picnic with our mom last summer was simply a funny turn of events. Far more significant is the way we thought we would be spending Mother’s Day 2020. When those plans were set in motion we never could have anticipated the situation we now find ourselves in.

If you are sad that you need to wave at your mom through a window this year or if your heart is breaking because your only option is a video chat, there is something precious to hold on to. That sadness--that heartbreak--is being driven by something of tremendous value--a relationship with your mom. Which in the end is something that should be celebrated any way we can every day of the year.

That’s my outlook.

4 easy habits to adopt for a greener planet

According to a 2019 report by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), we have about 12 years to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions before it’s too late to prevent a potentially catastrophic rise in global temperature. As a private citizen, you can help by adopting these four habits.

1. Reduce meat consumption Meat production is highly inefficient, especially when it comes to red meat. Limiting your meat consumption is a good way to reduce your carbon footprint and to make

your diet a bit healthier. Start by eating at least one meatfree meal a day.

2. Reduce carbon emissions Consider walking to work, biking or taking the bus. If driving is the only practical way you can get to work, you may be able to telecommute a few times a week. Try to get out of the habit of driving everywhere and when you do get behind the wheel, don’t idle your car.

3. Reduce waste Identify disposable things you use and try to replace them with their reusable equivalents. Buy a stainless

steel or glass portable cup, replace saran wrap with washable beeswax wrap and start collecting reusable grocery bags. You can also swap disposable razors and straws for their reusable counterparts.

4. Reduce power usage Another easy habit to adopt is to simply turn off and unplug electronics that aren’t in use. Even when they’re turned off, things like phone chargers, Blu-ray players and gaming consoles still draw power. Also, be careful to turn off the lights when you leave a room.

By starting small, you can make a big difference.

Conjunctivitis: causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment Conjunctivitis, more commonly known as pink eye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane that covers the inside of the eyelid and the white part of the eye.

Causes Most cases of conjunctivitis are the result of a virus. However, it also can be caused by a bacterial infection, an allergy or a chemical coming into contact with the eye. In a newborn, a blocked tear duct may be the cause of conjunctivitis.

Symptoms Regardless of the cause, symptoms include: • Itching, burning or a gritty sensation in the eyes • Excessive tear production • Reddish or pink eyes • Swelling of the eyelids • Blurry vision and light sensitivity Infectious conjunctivitis will also be characterized by an aqueous, transparent discharge if caused by a virus or a mucus-like yellow discharge if caused by bacteria.

Diagnosis Conjunctivitis is typically diagnosed through a simple exam and analysis of the patient’s health history. More advanced test-

ing such as tissue smears or cultures may be required for chronic cases or those that don’t respond to treatment.

Treatment The condition typically resolves on its own within a few days. However, infectious forms are highly contagious, so it’s important to consult a medical professional to receive proper diagnosis and treatment.

For bacterial cases, antibiotic drops and unguents may be prescribed. Viral cases have to run their course, but artificial tears will help manage symptoms. Finally, allergy- and chemical- related cases are

treated with antihistamine eye drops, along with the removal of the offending substance from the patient’s environment when possible.

If conjunctivitis lasts for more than a week, return to your doctor for further assessment.

Infectious conjunctivitis guidelines To avoid spreading the infection, wash your hands frequently and don’t touch your eyes. You should also clean your pillowcases daily and throw out anything that came into contact with your eyes such as disposable contacts and makeup brushes.

I received notice that our grandson Dustin Cowan had completed his Recruit Training Course at the Saskatchewan Police College, U of Regina on May 1, 2020.

Constable Dustin Cowan will begin his employment on May 10 with the Corman Park Police Force, near Saskatoon.

Jeff Cowan, Regina spent a few hours on May 2 afternoon visiting with his parents, Gray and Edel, his brother Tim, Shelly and Ainsley, as well as with friends Grant and Jenny before he headed back to Carlyle for supper.

On May 3 our Postmistress, Linda Akins has given her service to Alida for 20 years. A great accomplishment – we enjoy seeing your smiling face, your encouraging greetings and appreciate you loyal service – Congratulations Linda.

those on the “frontline” workers who are out working and treating the sick and ill all day every day. But they are out there five-days a week dealing with the mail, sorting and delivering OUR mail, and of course also dealing directly with the public whether it’s handing out parcels, in-coming and out-going mail. I’d like to think that it’s just a case of being over looked somehow by the media.

You see in the cities and larger centers the mail is delivered directly to residences, offices or to community mail boxes and the carriers aren’t really seen, not like in small towns it is us, the public who must go to the post office, pick up our own mail, and of course often greet our post mistress/ master either to pick up parcels or send out the out-going mail or just a say, “Hi – How are you today?”. Say have you noticed? I surely have – the huge quantity of parcels that are sitting in the post office waiting to be picked up. Now these parcels are handled not just once, but many times, when they arrive, recorded and again when they are picked up.

Now I for one wouldn’t want to be unable to get my mail whether its letters, papers or parcels,

it’s a great way to keep in touch and keep ourselves entertained. So here’s to ALL the Canada Post employees – thank you guys and gals!

Well another weekend with not much accomplished – I did a little yard work on Saturday, but gosh darn it was a little on the cool side so didn’t stick around outside for very long, guess getting soft in my old age (ha). If it’s going to rain I wish it would do it and be done, however a nice little shower would be nice to have everything washed off. However Hubby has been out playing in the dirt and points out that the ground is very wet, especially in places so we really don’t need any rain.

But a shower would also help to dampen the long dry winter grass and help with the danger of fires. Oh, we’re just never satisfied (ha). Sunday was spent watching television – there was curling on the sports channel all day, and I mean all day. I sure did get my fill of curling and enjoyed it even it was reruns. One of these days it will be nice to see actually see live sports once again. Makes you wonder what’s going to happen when the football season rolls around – I’d even be willing to watch

reruns then too. Only time will tell.

Once again it’s fairly quiet around, everyone still being cautious and keeping mostly to themselves and their property, only going out to pick up their mail or some groceries, just the essentials really. By the news reports they are beginning to open up the economy slowly – so hey folks it’s sounding and looking good – but let’s not rush it too soon – better to be safe than sorry and gosh forbid if we should have another outbreak. In the meantime folks let’s remember – to Keep Physical Distancing – Stay Healthy – Be Safe and Take Care, we WILL get through this together.

Word has been received of the passing of Bruce Norsworthy of Carlyle. He passed away on Apr. 29 at the age of 72 years. He leaves wife, Lynn, brothers, Jim and Don(Dayle) nephews Jason(Sue) and Tyler(Lyndaey) and niece Kayla. There will be a service at a later date with interment in the Glen Morris Cemetery. Bruce was the administrator of the Wawota Hospital for many years.

Happy birthday to Evelyn Bullock of Maryfield who recently celebrated her 100th birthday. The town organized a drive-by parade with a fire engine and over 70 vehicles. Len Downer and his son, Troy provided some live music in the afternoon. She curled in her 90’s and still loves to dance. She was born the year of the pandemic of the Spanish Flu and has lived to see another pandemic in the Corona virus.

Congratulations to Deb Saville who retired from her position as administrator of the R.M. of Walpole on Apr. 30.

She moved to Wawota over 20 years ago. She started her career at the

R.M. of Reno in 1995, then obtained her Class C Rural and Urban certificate 1998. In March of 2000 she began as the administrator of R.M.of Wawken. And in 2009 she received her Class A certificate. She became the administrator for the R.M. of Walpole for the next four years .

We have appreciated her involvement and hard work in the community and the United Church.

She was one of the original organizers in joining The Communities in Bloom.

At the Town and R.M. offices you will see Sherry Wight as Administrator of the Town, with Cayley Hamilton as assistant, Cheryl DeRoo as Administrator and Coralee Brehaut as assistant and for the R.M of Wawken, Katelyn Either with Heather Frederickson as assistant. Sounds like a good crew to me.

Happy birthday to Phil Weatherald on his 89th birthday and Doug Cudmore who was 85 last Saturday.

With changing times we are filling some of our time with different interests. I have enjoyed some entertainment on the Internet

recently. A few weeks I back watched TJ Anchor (Trystan Meyers), who entertained for an hour with his DJ skills and chit-chat. I have also been enjoying Jane Doull (former UC minister in Wawota) who has a brief message every day at 4:00 p.m. She wore a blue tartan scarf last week in memory of the many who lost their lives in the mass shooting in Nova Scotia. Her messages are thoughtful and reassuring. And my favorite was 5-year-old Ellie Shire of Regina who did a story hour type reading by herself. She read a story about the animals having a party and the snake baked the cake. Party, party, party.

The congregation of the Wawota United Church viewed a church service last Sunday on Zoom. It was complete with scripture readings by members, prayers, music and reflection with Roy Bortolotto. It was a great experience as it has been many weeks since we have been able to meet at the church. We are appreciative of those in the church who step up and organize and participate in our services.

Carlyle Memorial Hall gets a facelift

By Kelly Johnson The Observer The Carlyle Memorial Hall is getting a make over. The facelift is a joint effort by the Town of Carlyle, the Hall Board and The Cornerstone Theatre Group. The town is paying $7,300.00 for the renovation work, which is being done by 5th Street Construction. They have removed the old exterior brick and have made the necessary repairs for the application of the new stucco front.

The Hall is having the doors refinished by Carlyle Collision who had the winning bid for the job (which only asked for the cost of the paint).

The Hall is bearing that cost to the project. Also of note, is there will be a nice sized billboard space to accommodate advertising for the many events the Memorial Hall hosts each year.

The Hall currently houses Big Daddy’s Barbershop, Hair by N Brown, is the venue for The Cornerstone Theatre Group, who also run the movie theatre during the winter months.

Doug Waldner, chairperson of the Memorial Hall Board, anticipates that repairs are likely to be finished by the middle of May, weather co-operating. He adds, “I really want to thank the town, 5th Street Construction and Carlyle Collision for their contribution to this project.”

Spring is in the air . . . and land Kelly Johnson The Observer Some farmers in southeast Saskatchewan have begun seeding crops for the 2020 growing season.

This year conditions have made for a little later start, due to moisture and the lateness of the frost coming out of the ground.

In dryer years, the timeline for seeding would be three to four weeks. This year’s moisture and frost conditions could stretch the time needed to six weeks for some producers, as the weather is always the determining factor.

Each condition a farmer faces has benefits, as well as setbacks. The good moisture conditions provide for the prospects of a bumper crop, but can cause delays due to getting stuck more often with equipment, meaning less acres getting planted each day.

According to Dan Reaves of Precision Ag in Carlyle, “Crops will pull moisture from a depth of 100 centimetres and data collected from the soil moisture probes done last fall by Precision Ag, soil moisture in the area is very good.”

With timing and weather being the deciding factor to harvest a bumper crop, with average soil moisture it takes nine inches of timely rains to produce a bumper crop. The soil moisture is optimum to begin this year’s planting and farmers could realize bumper crops with about 50% of the expected rainfall, should it come in a timely fashion.

Submitted April 26, the day we celebrate and remember our parents (the date was their wedding anniversary) and raise funds for Huntington Disease. HD is a hereditary neurological condition that our mother and many of her relatives suffered from.

Wawota Walk to Cure Huntington Disease is the McCaw sister’s effort to raise awareness and funds.

Oxbow digital Community Art Gallery is live

By Ana Bykhovskaia abykhovskaia@estevanmercury.ca The quarantine made creative minds work and reorganize quickly and brought up many new opportunities. The Oxbow Arts and Cultural Committee first organized a successful online music concert and has now launched their first Community Art Gallery in a digital format.

Comprised of artists representing a variety of mediums from the Oxbow area, the gallery went live Sunday evening and will be available for a week. The digital album was added to the committee’s social networks that are open for public viewing to be enjoyed from home.

Megan Andersen, who took on inviting the artists to participate and organized the gallery, talked to the Mercury about the project.

“I’ve been in contact with several artists to see if they were willing to submit some works they already had. They emailed back to myself and I (uploaded) it through Facebook and Instagram. It’s one album to look at,” said Andersen.

The gallery is comprised of images of various art including photography, unique woodwork, collage, oil and watercolour paintings, and a few sketches.

Andersen, Kim Friesen, Jeremy Maffenbeier, Leonard and Evan Moncrief, Lynn Wood and Doug Sully partook in the Community Art Gallery project.

Some of the artists are currently living in Oxbow, Alameda and Glen Ewen, while others were born there but are now reside in Estevan or somewhere else.

“We have people who live in the States, in B.C. that have submitted

their work. One of our photographers has entered photos of her own area, so we got some really nice rural Saskatchewan work,” said Andersen.

Forty art pieces were entered for the project. Each picture has a description, including the artist’s name, the medium and explanation of what it is.

It was the first digital Community Art Gallery, and Andersen said that if it goes well, they’d like to have a second one in the future or maybe even turn it into a monthly event for as long as life is affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. But the future digital galleries may be organized a bit differently.

“This one we did by invitation, otherwise next ones we will probably open up to anyone else who might be interested,” said Andersen.

She hopes that

bum. Andersen said the group is open to everybody, and even if people don’t have a social network account they can still access the gallery.

The album will be available to view from April 26 to May 3, and then it will be archived on their Facebook page.

According to the Saskatchewan Crime Watch Advisory Network, on April 20 at approximately 4 p.m., an officer with the Carlyle

Carlyle, Arcola and Carievale players join U18 AAA Bears

By David Willbert Estevan Mercury The Estevan Eclipse Downhole Solutions U18 AAA Bears have announced the commitment of their first 12 players, including players from Carlyle, Arcola and Carievale.

The Bears will have players who have played at the U18 level (formerly midget) for one or two seasons, and some who spent last season at the U15 level (formerly bantam).

Cade Bendtsen, a 2003-born defenceman from Carlyle who played last season with the Estevan Apex midget AA Bruins, has committed to play for the Bears. Bendtsen had six goals and 25 points in 31 games played last season.

Forward Carson Birnie, a 2005-born forward from Arcola, also joined the Bears. He played with the Regina Monarchs bantam AA team last season and had 28 goals and 67 points in 29 games played.

Turner McMillen, a 2003-born forward from Carievale with two years of midget AAA experience, is also joining the Bears. He spent last season with

the Prince Albert Mintos midget AAA program and had 15 goals and 39 points in 44 games played.

Bears head coach and general manager Jeff Smith is pleased with the quality of talent the club has been able to attract, even though they didn’t have the benefit of a spring camp.

“There’s a lot of kids who wanted to come back and play for their local team, which is so nice to see and hear,” said Smith.

When that first player commitment came in, it was a relief, but it was a reminder that now it’s for real and an actual team is being formed. His entire staff was watching to see who had signed, and Smith is looking forward to building excitement for the team.

The 12 players they announced are those they had focused on, and now they’re pursuing the remaining handful of players to round out the roster.

“There might be a kid or two that slips through the cracks in the north that we’re keeping eyes on.

It’s always nice to have those extra spots just in case someone does come available.”

Fast Trucking shows support for laid-off workers with $50,000 in grocery gift cards

By David Willberg Estevan Mercury Fast Trucking Service has found a way to support the employees that they had to lay off during these challenging times.

The long-time Carnduff-based trucking company, which moves drilling rigs, hauls frac equipment and other oil rig-related equipment, was forced to lay off 250 workers earlier this month due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the price of oil. But they wanted to find a way to support their employees.

President Dennis Day, whose family operates Fast Trucking, said he knew that some employees were going to be in need of help.

“I didn’t know, when there was a million people going on unemployment and half the country’s shut down, when my guys were going to get any money,” said Day. He thought that if he bought them each a gift card from the co-op, they could get the groceries they need until the government support kicks in.

Day went to the co-op in Carnduff and ran into one of his employees, who was carrying a 10-pound ham and three dozen buns.

“You know what he’s eating the next 10 days, and that’s when I thought I am going to do this.”

He talked to his brother Larry, the rest of his family and his managers, and asked them what they

thought of the gift card idea. They agreed it was a great concept.

Day phoned the co-op, asked for $50,000 in gift cards, and wrote a letter to each employee from his family. Each employee was to receive $250 in gift cards, but Day managed to get them even more value.

“I’m a business guy, so I phoned the co-op and said if I buy $50,000 worth of gift cards, what kind of deal are you going to give me? And they said ‘We’ll give you a five per cent discount.’ So I said ‘Don’t give me the five per cent discount, add it on to each employee’s card. So they got $260.”

Day noted that he received more than 120 phone calls, text messages and emails the day after the gift cards were sent out. Other people stopped him in the street to thank him.

The gift cards are good for any co-op location, since Fast Trucking has locations in Estevan and Swift Current, in addition to Carnduff, and they have employees elsewhere.

Approximately 350 people work for the business.

Fast Trucking has been trying to maintain some operations during the pandemic and the oil price crash, but Day said they have had some trucks parked since 2014, when the price of oil went through a significant drop in value.

Redvers artist finds different types of inspiration in fluid pandemic world

By Ana Bykhovskaia abykhovskaia@estevanmercury.ca Born in Gravelbourg and now a resident of Redvers, artist Chylisse Marchand has lately experienced both the challenges and the advantages of the times of self-isolation.

As a response to intervention (RTI) teacher, she continued to work with students from home and also keeps the school page going, but the quarantine also allowed more time for art and brought different sources of inspiration.

“Lately, my inspiration has been very much COVID-19 related. I’ve been focusing on things that bring me peace – thus my recent works with succulents. I find these flowers to be so peaceful and beautiful,” said Marchand in an interview with the Mercury.

“When I paint, I can escape the current reality and jump into a totally different world. While working, I tend to listen to podcasts – some uplifting mindful podcasts, some podcasts exposing the deep and dark history of Canada and others that are light and entertaining. Whatever mood I am in, art grounds me and brings me peace.”

Her love for art began during her early years.

Being a quiet child, she spent a lot of her time dabbling with the arts and for a number of years, she took watercolour lessons from Gravelbourg artist Avis Frank. Marchand pursued visual communications at Medicine Hat College in Alberta, but then she chose to follow in the footsteps of her parents who were teachers and got her education and fine arts degree from the University of Lethbridge.

Spending most of the time at home allowed Marchand to do a lot of things simultaneously, and while work still takes a significant part of the day she had much more time for art.

“I find that with this whole thing, I’ve been able to focus on my art more probably than I ever had before because we cannot really do anything,” said Marchand.

One day Marchand wants to be a tattoo artist if she can, and tattoo-style paintings are common within her works. One such piece she created under the influence of the earlier news about the pandemic a few weeks ago.

“For me, my work (as a teacher) is so important and being able to see my kids at school is so important, that I was really, really sad and I was in such a negative place that I wanted to do something that would speak to the whole COVID thing,” said Marchand.

“This one I wanted to do to commemorate all of the heroes that are out there right now working through this very fluid time. I wanted to include basically everything that I could think of that is going through my mind.”

She went on to explain that the sand-glass is a symbol of frustration around the timeframe of the pandemic that overtook the world, symbolized by a globe. The triangles represent past, present and future, and DNA speaks to the notion of the virus affecting human beings. There is also a medical stethoscope to recognize healthcare workers. Roses signify love, gratitude and appreciation and a wing stands for freedom. There are also a few circles that look like bull’s eyes.

“It’s hard to explain what was going through my

head at that time with that one. But I just thought that we were all getting hit and we were all part of the bull’s eyes,” said Marchand.

Some other recent works Marchand did are completely different. They are light and peaceful.

“Sometimes with my other pieces … I need to do a light floral piece just to kind of escape the reality. Right now, the reality is so fluid and it’s just so strange and I struggle with grounding myself. So painting is a way for me to escape that,” said Marchand.

When it comes to floral art and lately the succulents, Marchand usually looks through many beautiful pictures, finding her inspiration in them, and then combines the positive vibes into an oil or watercolour painting.

And while the self-isolation period turned to be very productive, Marchand still cannot wait for the end of the quarantine.

“I’m very much a people person and I’m very outgoing, I like to volunteer throughout my community and run paint classes and do all these extra things. So I’m really looking forward to when quarantine is done,” said Marchand, adding that she hopes to continue painting a lot when life gets back to normal, but the first thing she wants to do as soon as it’s allowed is to go camping with her two daughters and friends, which promises to also result in more sketches and pencil art she usually does when out enjoying nature.

If it is still happening this summer, Marchand also plans to show her work at the Moose Mountain Provincial Park Artist Colony in July.
