Business showcase of the week - King’s Department Store

By Kelly Johnson The Observer/ Summer Times Each week, up to September long weekend, Summer Times will “randomly” choose a business in the area to showcase.

Unfortunately we can’t showcase all businessess in this time period.

King’s Department Store has been operating in Carlyle since 1985. The store’s roots go back to 1976 when Bud and Bev King, along with Keith Allison, opened the original store in Wawota in 1976.

The store is now owned and operated by Bud and Bev’s son, Ken King and is located on Main Street in Carlyle.

King’s store has been through many changes

a nd ex pa nsions over the years. As mentioned above, the second store opened in Carlyle in 1985 after purchasing the former Robinson’s Store, which was owned by Gordon Haywood Sr. In 2012 the Kings acquired Mi-Lady Fashions next door from Judy Feduk. Renovations were made and the two stores became one.

The store offers a wide inventory of men’s and ladies clothing and footwear and keeps a good selection of the latest styles and trends for any and all customers.

Deemed as a non-essential business, King’s was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The business improvised by using on-

line sites to stay in contact with customers, using curbside services and delivery as well.

“We were fortunate we had signi�icant support,” King said re�lecting on the past few months.

“The reduced operating plan was a challenge,” he added and is very happy his front door is again open to customers to come in and shop in person.

King grew up in Wawota, spending summers at the family cabin at Kenosee Lake. He is very thankful to be a member of the business community in Carlyle and servicing the resort communities of Moose Mountain Provincial Park and White Bear Lake and the surrounding area.

Allergies or COVID-19: How to Tell the Difference?

“Because every case is different, it’s important to speak to a healthcare professional if you’re unsure about your diagnosis, and your pharmacist is a good place to start,” Shepherd said, adding that pharmacists can also offer advice and treatment to curb seasonal allergies.

By Kelly Johnson The Observer/Summer Times Spotted camping at Fish Creek Campground in Moose Mountain Provincial Park was Patrick Neal of Kisbey, Saskatchewan.

Neal has recently retired and just purchased a new camper, setting up in his favourite place to camp - close to the shores of Kenosee Lake.

Neal is camping with his wife, Nathalie spending 10 days at the popular campground. They especially like Fish Creek for its private sites and the surrounding white birch forest it is situated in. The surrounding area also offers lots of activities and he enjoys that the campground is very well serviced.

Neal has done a lot of camping over the years, noting that he spent a lot of his time staying in campgrounds while working.

During the winter months Neal has camped in Texas, Arizona and Mexico.

He likes camping best when around people he knows and places where the �ishing is good. Sitting around the camp�ire, feeding the squirrels and cooking up fresh caught perch from Kenosee Lake are activities that he thoroughly enjoys . . . a perfect way to spend the day.

Moose Mountain is also a perfect spot to go for a drive, sighting local wildlife such as deer, moose, elk, and anything that may run across the road.

He prefers to camp on the prairies in Canada, having also camped at Moosomin Lake. He has also camped at destinations around Kamloops, BC and Lake of the Woods in Ontario.

When asked for the place he would recommend as a “go to” place for the avid camper, Neal responded, “Fish Creek.”

Shelley is originally from Midale and moved to Manor in 1994 after her marriage.

Big Eagle likes to hit the links three or four times a week and has played most of the area courses, including Golf Kenosee, Carnduff, Moosomin, Carlyle, Weyburn and White Bear.

How to get rid of your golf slice

Among amateur and intermediate golfers, slicing the ball is a common problem. Typically, it’s caused by an outside-toinside swing path that leaves the club face open at the moment of impact.

This sends the ball careening off to the right if the golfer is right-handed. Here are some tips to help you eliminate your slice and send the ball straight down the fairway.

Adjust your setup Many golfers line up with the ball too far forward in their stance. This leaves the club face open at the moment of impact and prevents the golfer

from properly releasing the club. To help get rid of your slice, experiment with moving the ball a bit further back in your stance.

Fix your grip A good golf swing starts with a good grip.

It’s common for players who slice the ball to have their top hand too far underneath the club, which results in an open club face. As a rule, you want to be able to see three knuckles on your left hand.

Tuck in your elbow If your grip and setup are �ine, then the issue is likely with your swing.

One of the most common swing mistakes among players who slice is �laring out their right elbow during the backswing.

This pulls the club away from the body, resulting in an outside-to-inside swing. To ensure your club follows a straight path, keep your right elbow as close to your body as possible during your back swing.

If following this advice doesn’t deliver your ball onto the fairway, consider taking one or more lessons from a golf instructor. You’ll likely bene�it from more personalized pointers.

Big Eagle is the reigning Golf Kenosee Ladies Club Champion, winning the 2019 title, scoring a 76, which is a 4 over par and her best round of golf to date. Big Eagle is also a

member at the White Bear Golf Course.

Big Eagle likes playing a Bridgestone ball and uses Taylor-made irons and drivers.

Her favourite hole is the Par 4 Number One at Golf Kenosee that features an elevated tee off and one of the most scenic views on a golf course anywhere.

Big Eagle has never scored a hole-in-one. Her closest shot to that achievement was being about 15 centimetres from dropping.

Big Eagle’s dream golf vacation would be to play The Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland, which is considered the oldest golf course in the world.

Arcola Ag Daze cancelled for 2020 Submitted Over the past 114 years, the Arcola Fair has overcome many challenges and this is no different.

This summer, we will not be hosting a 2020 Arcola Antique Ag Daze, but we are looking forward to hosting everyone in 2021.

The cancellation of our event does not mean our board is folding.

The Arcola Fair Society is a continuation of Arcola’s past Agricultural Societies that held its �irst fair in 1906.

Our board members are stewards of the Arcola fairgrounds. We care for, maintain, improve, and are responsible for the Arcola fairgrounds. We are proud to offer a multi-use green

space, which is utilized by numerous community organizations. We offer rentals of our Ag Pavilions and grounds for a variety of functions, training opportunities, family barbeques, and educational courses.

For 2020, we have many behind-the-scenes maintenance tasks and renovations planned to keep us busy. If you see us out and about maintaining the fairgrounds, feel free to stop in and chat . . . while maintaining a social distance.

With COVID-19 guidelines permitting, the Arcola Fair Society is looking to host a few smaller events in the fall of 2020. Stay tuned to our website for all the event updates (ar-

Greek chicken brochettes

Serve up these tasty brochettes at a Greek-inspired feast or as an alternative to burgers at your next family barbecue.

Start to �inish: 1 hour 20 minutes (25 minutes active) Servings: 4 Ingredients • 1/4 cup Greek yogurt • Juice of 1 lemon • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 2 tablespoons oregano, fresh or dried • 1 tablespoon Italian parsley, fresh or dried • 1 teaspoon ground coriander • Salt and pepper, to taste • 4 boneless and skinless chicken breasts, cubed • 1 large zucchini

Directions 1. In the sink or a large bowl, soak four wooden skewers in water for at least 1 hour. (Skip this step if you’re using metal skewers).

2. In a large bowl, mix the Greek yogurt, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic and spices. Add the chicken and mix well. Make sure the chicken is evenly coated in the marinade. Chill in the fridge for 1 to 3 hours.

3. Chop off the ends of the zucchini and use a peeler to cut �ine strips. Salt generously and lay the strips �lat (without overlapping) on a clean cloth or paper towel. Place another cloth or piece of paper towel and a heavy object, such as a wood cutting board, overtop. Let sit for at least 30 minutes.

4. Uncover the zucchini and use a clean cloth or paper towel to dab away excess salt and water. Roll up each strip.

5. Assemble the brochettes by alternating cubes

A common concern I hear from my patients as well as friends and family is that they typically do not sleep well.

Although this may not seem an overly serious problem, disrupted sleep is a risk factor for mental health issues, heart disease, weight gain, digestive health issues, and decreased cognitive and physical performance.

What causes poor sleep? The reasons are numerous. Stress, anxiety, pain, indigestion, children/family, excessive screen time, medications and hormonal imbalances are just a few of the reasons we don’t sleep as well as we should.

How much sleep do we need?

Ideally most people function best if they get at least 7.5-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night. Kids under the age of 17 need more, at least 9 hours of sleep. And research has shown that getting at least 2-3 hours BEFORE midnight improves the quality of your sleep How can you improve

melatonin before bed may help. Reducing your stress levels by making lifestyle changes or taking a high potency B-complex will aid in reducing your stress levels.

There is a lot of new research suggesting that limiting screens 60 min before bed has also shown to be helpful to improving sleep quality and quantity.

Muscle and joint pain can often be a cause of poor sleep. Ensuring you have a good bed will help

Tough decision for Crescent Point Leisure Complex not to open this season The following letter was submitted by the Crescent Point Leisure Complex Board and the Town of Carlyle in regards to this season’s status on the pool.

Hello everyone, It has been a grueling few weeks, to say the least, in regards to the decision we have come to.

It is with deep sadness that we are announcing that we will not be opening for the 2020 season. Several factors came into play with this decision, and we do not exaggerate when we say that it was many sleepless nights and many days of continuous discussions leading up to this decision. However, after meeting with the town council and the majority vote from both the town and pool board, our conclusive decision for our pool year, is to remain closed.

To better understand the reasons we are not opening, please see below: 1. Structural issues- Our pool is 25 years old and over time, the structure surrounding the pool within the crawl space has deteriorated. This year, as annual inspections were made to the crawl space, we found multiple sections to the pool’s structural surround has completely corroded. We are currently in the process of working with pool maintenance companies to begin the process of re-doing the pool’s surround. This will be a major expense and is something that we have to plan, for the future of our pool.

2. Budget/Finances- Due to staf�ing and COVID restrictions, we were planning to not run lessons this year.

Without lessons and other cutbacks from our regular season (ex. season passes, number of patrons swimming, pool schedule, season duration, etc.), we have a projected de�icit of close to $35, 000. Even though this may not seem extreme to some, it will set our �inances back a drastic amount for years to come; especially with our major �ixes in the near future.

3. Staf�ing- In the past, we have run our pool with an average of 10-12 staff. Because of the uncertainty of the pool plans in the last few months and our guards �inding other jobs, we were left with very few full time guards, and some working part time. Therefore, we were limited to both full time and part-time staff. On top of the lower numbers, we also were limited with proper certi�ication. We need we need a high number

The Crescent Point Leisure Complex in Carlyle unfortunately will not open it’s gates this summer season. of guards with a National Lifeguard quali�ication to safely run our facility and this year, we were very low in these quali�ications. As we have shown in the past, proper guarding and certi�ication is very important to our pool and community.

4. Regulations and guidelines- Based on the Lifesaving Societies guidelines for physical distancing and in correspondence with our pool size, our daily limit of patrons would have been about �ifty. To maintain the regulations and guidelines that were presented from the government, we would also have had to hire additional staff to help maintain the regulations for our facility.

Again, making our de�icit for the year greater.

As you can tell, it was a dif�icult decision to face all of these factors. However, as mentioned, with both the town’s and board’s majority vote, our decision has

been made. Within the near future, we will form a plan to address the structural issues and �ix and update our facility’s needs, preparing our pool as best we can for next year and as many years to come. We hope that the public understands our decision and can look into the future like we have tried to. As all of us as board members have kids who use the pool, we too are deeply saddened by this decision.

However,we feel we are looking out for the pool’s future and longevity of the pool.

The origins of Canada Day Each July 1st, Canada celebrates Canada Day. Canada Day marks the British North America Act (today known as the Constitution Act), which went into effect on July 1, 1867. This act established the country of Canada with its initial provinces of New Brunswick, Novia Scotia and Canada (which later would become Ontario and Quebec). The provinces asked to form one Dominion with a Constitution similar in principle to that of the United Kingdom. British Parliament passed the legislation, and Canada became a new, domestically self-governing federation.

Nearly a year later, on June 20, 1868, Governor General Lord Charles Stanley Monck signed a proclamation that requested all Her Majesty’s subjects across Canada to celebrate July 1 in honor of the establishment of the country. Monck served as the last Governor General of the Province of Canada and the �irst Governor General of the country of Canada after the Canadian Confederation.

In 1879, a federal law made July 1 a statutory holiday as the “anniversary of Confederation,” which would later be called “Dominion Day.” The holiday further evolved on October 27, 1982, when Dominion Day was renamed “Canada Day.” Each year, Canada Day is marked by many different celebrations. A �lag ceremony on the lawns of Parliament Hill, military music and �ireworks are typical Canada Day festivities. At home, individuals host barbecues and proudly display their �lags.

Canada Day has been celebrated for more than 150 years and marks a pivotal moment in Canadian history.
