Olympian Carter Morrison honoured at Saskatchewan Legislature Lynne Bell

Observer Staff Twelve-year-old Carter Morrison-who represented Canada and Ronald McDonald Houses at the 2016 Olympic Games opening ceremonies in Rio de Janeiro this summer- was honoured by the Province of Saskatchewan, as he joined Saskatchewan’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes, coaches and Games representatives at the Legislature in Regina on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Carter, who was born with achondroplasia, has spent time in Ronald McDonald Houses in each of the prairie provinces since he was a baby and continues to do so, as a result of his medical condition. The charity sent nearly 100 children and young people from around the world to represent Ronald McDonald Houses to the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio, with only five selected from Canada. Of those five Canadians, Carter was the only young person who was asked outright to represent the charity at the XXXI Olympiad.

Along with Team Canada flagbearer and Canadian Olympic gold medallist Rosie MacLennan, Carter led Team Canada into Rio de Janeiro’s 80,000-seat Maracana Stadium for the 2016 Olympic Games opening ceremony, watched by a global audience numbering in the billions. He reprised his role in Rio as he led Saskatchewan’s Olympians into the Legislature for their day of celebration by the province.

Carter’s day at the Legislature also included a trip to the Legislative Assembly’s library, where he joined other Saskatchewan residents who represented the province-and country-in Rio. After a photo shoot, the group went upstairs, where they autographed copies of a commemorative booklet produced in their honour for school kids in attendance and others.

Carter-who was accompanied my his parents Trevor and Lisa Morrison and sister, Makenna- said a highlight of his day was meeting Paralympic bronze medallist, Logan Campbell of Saskatoon. Campbell, who lost his hand in a boating accident, captured the bronze medal for sailing at the Paralympic Games in Rio. “Me and my mom saw him,” says Carter. “We just started talking to each other and I got to hold his bronze medal. It was pretty amazing. The whole day was fun and amazing.”

“Carter was thrilled to hold that bronze medal,” says Lisa.

“After that, there was a ceremony in the rotunda and lunch.

Then Carter went into Question Period and (Cannington MLA) Dan D’Autremont introduced him.”

Kisbey Post Office holds Customer Appreciation Day

Friday, November 25, 2016

A statement from the Carlyle RCMP detachment Shortly before 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18 while patrolling the hockey arena in Carlyle during the hockey game, Carlyle RCMP were advised that a young child had been taken from the arena by an adult male.

The child’s guardian recognized the male.

However, there was no known relationship to the child.

Members of the Carlyle RCMP-with the assistance of Estevan RCMP Traffic Services-quickly located the male at a residence near the arena and arrested him.

The child was brought to EMS and subsequently, they transported the child to hospital for assessment. The child was then released and returned to the care of the guardian.

A 29-year-old male from Carlyle made his first court appearance Monday, Nov. 21 in Estevan and is facing several charges.

Council members to attend SUMA annual meeting Lynne Bell

Carlyle Town Council held their regular biweekly meeting Wednesday, Nov. 16 at the Carlyle Civic Centre with Deputy Mayor John Brownlee presiding. Council’s next regular meeting will take place 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30 at the Civic Centre.

SUMA The annual Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association meetimg will be held Feb. 5-8, 2017 in Saskatoon. Mayor Wayne Orsted, Town Administrator Huguette Lutz and Councillors Dean Hoffman and Brian Romaniuk will attend.

Fire The Carlyle & R.M. #63 Fire Protection Board has reviewed the agreements for fire protection for the Bear Claw Casino. White Bear First Nations and White Bear Lake Resort and is currently in the process of finalizing them.

Strategic planning Council will begin the process of strategic planning for the next year, starting at the Nov. 30 meeting.

Weekly RCMP report Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle detachment of RCMP responded to 80 files between Saturday, Nov. 12, and Thursday, Nov. 17.

911 call Someone in Manor was setting up a new phone system and didn’t realize they had accidentally connected to 911.

Abandoned vehicle There was a report of an abandoned vehicle, which is currently under investigation.

Animal call A deer was reported as still being alive on the side of the road, but badly injured by a vehicle. Animal Protection Services of Saskatchewan was contacted.

Assault Two reports of assaults were called into RCMP. The first involved two individuals in Carlyle and is under investigation; the other occurred in Redvers and is under investigation as well.

Assistance RCMP served a subpoena to an individual in the area at the request of another police agency.

A welfare check was conducted. The individual was found and was returning home shortly.

Break and enters There are a total

of 13 break and enters to cabins in the Carlyle area, which are currently under investigation.

Break and enters at residences in Forget (2), Carlyle (1), and in the Carlyle area (1) also occurred.

Criminal harassment There was a report of criminal harassment between two parties in the Carlyle area. Members attended and spoke to the parties.

Failure to comply A young woman from the Carlyle area was found to have failed to comply with an undertaking – conditions upon her release from court – and has been charged.

False alarm RCMP were in the midst of responding to an alarm at a school in the Carlyle area, but a key holder called to explain all was well.

Fraud Two reports of fraud were reported and are under investigation.

Liquor offences An individual was reported for swerving on the road and potentially being intoxicated.

RCMP located the driver, but they were not impaired. The individual had run out of gas.

Two people were charged with driving while impaired.

Two Liquor Act tickets were issued, both for $360: one was to a minor and the other to a 23-year-old who was drinking in a vehicle.

Mischief Near Redvers it was reported that someone had opened a cattle gate letting the animals out.

It was reported that this was not the first time and that they have had similar problems.

Driving infractions An individual was stopped near Carlyle on Hwy 9 and issued a ticket for not having registration ($580).

Three individuals were fined for failing to stop at a stop sign ($230).

A total of 22 individuals were stopped and fined for speeding.

One seatbelt ticket was issued to an individual in Redvers

($175).

Three non-moving violations occurred during this time: cargo was not properly secured, a licence plate was being used on the

wrong vehicle, and an inspection ticket was issued.

Five traffic collisions occurred including two incidents of collisions with deer, a piece of ma-

chinery running into a vehicle, and two hit and run reports.

Uttering threats RCMP are investigating the allegations of an individual uttering threats to someone.

Hello everyone, my name is Katie Vinge and I am the chef and owner of The Happy Nun Cafe in Forget.

Before I get started, I just wanted to thank Community Futures and Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan for inviting me to speak today. I am very honoured, excited and a little nervous to share my story with you. Being a chef, I am usually behind the scenes, hiding out in the kitchen, so as you can imagine, this is a big step for me!

Why I got into business for myself As you may have read, I am from a small town in northern Alberta called Fairview. Growing up, I was lucky enough to travel, which exposed me to a lot of different places, cultures and cuisines.

We always spent a lot of time in this area as we have a family cabin at White Bear Lake. This has always been my favourite place and I believe that having this love for the area played a huge part as to where I am today.

After I graduated high school, I moved to Edmonton and enrolled in journalism and then switched to interior design. While in this pro-

gram, I still felt that there was something missing. My “poor parents” was all I could think when I called them up again, telling them that I had come across an ad for the Culinary Arts program and I was thinking of applying. I knew how crazy it sounded; it was like telling them I wanted to become an astronaut. Lucky for them and for me, this plan stuck.

Fast forward to my first day of orientation in my new program.

Sitting in the restaurant attached to the culinary wing, I was suddenly overcome with a stream of emotions. I felt like somehing had finally clicked.

This was where I was supposed to be. It was the first time I had visions of owning my own restaurant one day. I couldn’t wait to fill my parents in on this new revelation, once again surprising them with a new challenge. Little did we know, it would become a reality and five years later, my dad would be washing dishes in our very own restaurant.

I really started to expand on the vision of owning my own place when a good friend of mine and I started experimenting with pop-up suppers in the city. We were both working for the same restaurant and were excited about the possibility of hosting our own dinner with our own style of food. We were excited about the possibility of being the ones that could decide everything. With help

from family and friends, we hosted our first two long table pop-up dinners. This was my first taste of culinary freedom and it was intoxicating.

It was after these pop-up dinners and years of working in restaurants that I felt I had hit a turning point in my career. I was ready for the next step. I craved independence and wanted to express myself and to create the food and atmosphere that I believed in.

It is funny the way things work out sometimes.

Around this time, my husband was offered a teaching job in the area. This was a great opportunity for him and was too good to pass up. I was ready for a change and not too fond of long distance so I started to do some research. I felt that with my education and experience in the industry that I was ready to venture out on my own.

This was around the same time that a place I had never been to, on a road I had driven by a thousand times-called The Happy Nun- came up for sale. Well, after the first trip to Forget in November of 2014-in true Katie style- my parents received another phone call... I knew what I wanted for Christmas that year: The Happy Nun Cafe. Totally reasonable request, right?

After several more trips to Forget and many sleepless nights, we started the journey. The Happy Nun fit me perfectly. It was the space I had been looking for, that could give me the latitude to express myself in a way and pace that made sense for me. I believed that I was ready to add some new ideas and introduce people to my style and approach to food in the area.

I was ready to build on the wonderful reputation that had already been established at The Happy Nun by previous owners and visionaries Don and Shannon Shakotko. Like them, I had a dream too, to bring the restaurant to life again with music, laughter and the sharing of food.

Nourishment for the body as well as the soul.

What do I like and dislike about it?

As a chef, I prepare food. That’s what I do and most of the time, I am quite comfortable with it. Little did I know when my pursuit to become a business owner became a reality, that owning your own restaurant is SO much more than just the food. Not only am I the Chef- as I quicklylearned-I am a janitor, a teacher, a counselor, a music manager, a landscaper, a damage controller and sometimes, a handy-woman.

Continued from page 6 When I first started out, I did not have much knowledge of the business side of things. I knew food and figured I would learn as I went, as I had amazing mentors and support from family and friends. People believed in me- and however wonderful that may be- it did not prepare me for what owning your own business actually entails.

It requires 100 percent of your time and energy. You are never not working. You are always thinking about your business. You cannot leave your job at work when you go home at the end of the day, because your job is your life.

This was a hard lesson for me to learn, as I have never had that kind of responsibility before. I could no longer just not do things because I didn’t feel like it. If I didn’t do them, no one else would. It was the first thing I thought about when I woke up in the morning and the last thing before I went to sleep. I am not going to lie, I do wish sometimes there was an off button that I could switch, but there isn’t. This is the reality of owning something that is an expression of yourself.

As well as the overwhelming responsibility that comes with owning your own business, I have found it challenging to balance my personal life outside of work. It is difficult to step away from the restaurant, whether it is planning a getaway

or attending social events without feeling guilty about it.

However, in saying that, I really can’t imagine doing anything else. I have met some of the most amazing people within the last two years of taking over The Happy Nun. I have been fortunate enough to be a part of many celebrations, such as marriage proposals, retirement parties, anniversaries and many more. I feel truly blessed that they choose to share these special occasions with me. This feeling of making a difference in people’s lives continues to inspire me to create.

When I look back at the beginning of this journey, I can’t help but notice how much this experience has changed me in a positive way. I am a completely different person than I was from when I started. I have done things that I did not know I was capable of. It has forced me out of my comfort zone and by doing so, has allowed me to grow as a person, increasing confidence in myself and my ability drastically.

Challenges or barriers I may have faced Becoming a business owner is one of the most challenging things I have ever done.

When we first started up, our opening weekend, we were surrounded by family and friends that had travelled from all over to come and help us out. I remember thinking how surreal it was, watching all of these people that we loved so much, working together for us and our dream.

It was a great opening weekend except for a few minor hiccups: like running out of water, almost running out of food and a minor breakdown I may have experienced Sunday morning. (I may have done the ugly cry, haha). I was hit with a wave of panic and the realization that this was it.

My friends and family were gone and now-for the most part- it was up to me. I was not on my own completely, but I was scared and overwhelmed, not knowing if I was capable of what it takes to run this business. I gave myself the afternoon to sulk and then picked myself up-literally- off the floor. I started to brainstorm some ways I could make this easier on myself. Although it may seem like such a simple thing to do, I tend to have difficulty with it. It took me a while to grasp this concept, but once I did, things began to fall into place.

I was able to delegate certain tasks to people instead of trying to do everything myself, which made a huge difference and allowed me to focus more on the food aspect of the Nun. I learned that when advertising for a position, it is very important to be completely upfront with people about what the job entails and the expected hours- right from the very beginning. We have found that developing a proper job description is extremely important; it has allowed us to continually create a team that is the best fit for The Happy Nun. I have been told that I am a bit of a control freak, but I didn’t really believe this... until I became a business owner... which completely magnified this aspect of my life.

I found that because I had invested so much of my life into this new business venture, that it was a struggle for me to relinquish some of the control.

In the beginning, I barely left the restaurant.

I would spend days there, sleeping there, even.

I quickly realized that this was not healthy; that while my job was a part of my life, it wasn’t my whole life. I needed balance- which included

trusting other people and giving them more responsibility. Stepping outside into the sunlight even, I needed to let go just a little bit.

Along with being a control freak, I found it very difficult to say NO to people and situations in times when I knew I should. It took a while for me to learn that while I strive to make everyone happy, it is impossible. I learned that I cannot take things personally; I am a human being doing the best I can. When I do mess up, the most important thing is that I can learn from my mistakes and walk away a better business owner.

On a lighter note, looking back at some of my challenges have been pretty comical. For example: Cupcakes. For some reason whenever I try to make them, they usually end up all over me, my kitchen, the ceiling, everywhere but the pan!

Baked potatoes... that’s all I’m going to say there because I am still embarrassed about it. Also, I can’t make lasagna to save my life, thank goodness for Google.

Despite some of these challenges, we have been very fortunate to win some awards and have received quite a bit of media attention. Within our first year, we were awarded Saskatchewan’s Top 10 (Canadian) Restaurants as well as Top Canadian Cuisine and Live Entertainment on Trip Advisor. We also appeared on The Prairie Diner, which was featured on Global TV and The Prairie Palate on Access TV. This past spring, we were featured on CTV’s Hometown Tour, which was a highlight for us, for sure.

What the future has in store In terms of the future, I am very happy with where we are right now. It will be two years on March 13, 2017 that we’ve been open. We actually opened The Happy Nun on Friday the 13th. It’s a funny story now, but it was terrifying at the time.

Moving forward, I just want to continue to do my best to keep the spirit of The Happy Nun alive, building on the positive reputation that was established by its founders, Don and Shannon Shakotko. The Happy Nun is such a special place.

Whether it’s the live music or the food, I have found that it has an undeniable power of bringing out the best in people. I feel honoured that I get to be the one who gets the chance to share it with everyone.

In conclusion, I wanted to share a quote with you by Ella Fitzgerald that I came across. It really spoke to me and my journey of becoming a business owner: “For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be.

There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want.

You may change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it.”

“I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.”

A weekend adventure

I’m not sure who this quote is attributed to… but it’s the truth: “Friendship is so weird… you just pick a human you’ve met and you’re like ‘yup I like this one’ and you just do stuff with them.”

I have many great friends, but there’s one I talk to nearly every day, we usually just tell each Kelly Running other what went on in the day or Observer Staff what we have coming up to do.

We’ve been friends since our second week of our first year of university. I didn’t know anyone and was feeling quite lonely going to my classes and sitting by myself. So, when I ran into this girl on my residence floor that I recognized from geography class I asked her if it was ok that next time I sit with her as she hadn’t been sitting with anyone either. I figured we were in the same boat.

I think this is why the quote from above seems so on the nose, I literally picked a human and we decided to start doing things together. Nine years later and I consider her one of my best friends.

She and her wife are two of the greatest people I know. They’re the type of friends that would literally do anything they could for you if you were in need, the kind you can rely and depend on. This summer they actually planned with my parents to come visit me for Thanksgiving.

Sadly on the Friday they were supposed to come surprise me they had car troubles and were stuck in Calgary. I got a sad sounding phone call from them, they were disappointed and explained to me what they had all cooked up with my parents; but, that it wasn’t going to work out anymore.

I thought it was the sweetest gesture… so, that same day I figured I would spin it around. Planning with my friend’s wife we picked a weekend they didn’t have too much going on and a week that I wouldn’t yet be slammed between work and coaching.

I had texted my friend in the morning, asking what she had on for the day, and she replied with just regular life things: work, grocery store, home.

Nothing exciting planned. In turn she asked me, so I told her it was supposed to be a day of writing.

I arrived and was picked up by my friend’s wife, off we went to surprise her. While in the car I texted my friend that I was having a tough time writing… her wife had also called her via Bluetooth to see what she wanted for lunch. It took everything I had not to say “Hi!” or start laughing, after all I had just texted her that I was struggling to find inspiration to write implying I was sitting in my office in Carlyle.

So, it was quite a bit of fun when I showed up with her wife, lunch for us in hand, at her place of work.

I think quite often we get caught up in life and forget to make the effort to see or talk to people we care about: friends or family. I got lucky in that my sister came home early on the Sunday, so I got to spend some time with her as well before making my way back to Carlyle.

But, making time for people is everything. It shows that you care. And I do find it easier to make time for people who live further away because there’s the thought for those you live near that “Oh, I can see them anytime.” But, it’s not necessarily like that, you still need to put the effort in.

So, despite hectic schedules, make sure you slow down and find a moment to “just do stuff” with that random human you’ve picked to be your friend.

Cleaning it up It was a warning to be heeded. No way did you dare cross the line and face those consequences. I think it might have happened to my cousin Jimmy, but I can’t be sure.

“Watch your mouth or I’ll wash it out with soap.”

The threat was levelled as a deterrent to stop a child from lying, talking back, or swearing. The mere fear of Shelley Luedtke the taste would be enough to prevent most children from running afoul of the expectations; and you can’t miss the symbolic nature of taking a cleaner to a mouth as an object lesson in getting rid of what was deemed inappropriate.

Throughout the 1800’s examples of this method of discipline were recorded in books and magazines. By the 1950’s several school boards in the U.S. ratified it as a legitimate disciplinary tactic for a misbehaving pupil. But enter the new millennium and we see a shift in attitude.

A number of arrests and civil lawsuits arose from what has been called the abuse of parental authority, and there was a notable case in which a mother lost custody of her children, after forcing her 8-year old daughter to chew soap as punishment for swearing, not realizing she was allergic.

I was reading a series of articles by parents who are making, in their words, important but unconventional parenting decisions in 2016, including washing mouths out with soap. I was surprised, but it got me thinking-- it’s not the children we need to worry about—it’s the adults.

Mix up your toothpaste and lotion, or accidentally get soap on your toothbrush--once-and it’s something you are careful not to repeat. It is that distasteful. But as symbolic and deterring as the mouth washing might be, it is--in the end-not the mouth that is the problem. The real issue is with what drives the function of our mouths.

I really like Ketchup chips. They are the perfect combination of tang with a sprinkle of sweet, and if they are in my house I simply can’t resist them.

Consequently I have to be very careful to not buy them too often. I can’t pretend I can eat as many as I want and it not have an adverse impact on the health of my body. Yet when it comes to what we put into our brains we seem to think we are immune to those consequences. We’re not.

Everything that goes into our brains has an effect. Contrary to what our interactions with some might suggest, it does not ‘go in one ear and out the other’. So as adults we need to be as aware of the words and images being consumed by our brains as we are about the sugar and sodium being consumed by our bodies.

Our brains need better than the junk food of profanity, lying, insults, and ridicule. Listening to it and participating in it might feel good in the short term, similar to a caffeine or sugar rush, but it isn’t sustaining and it does little for the health of our brains and the words that come tumbling out as a result. Far better is a renewing of our mind. So let’s replace the obscenities with words that uplift; lies with truth; insults with encouragement; and ridicule with compassion.

Keeping our mouths clean begins and ends with keeping our minds clean.

A New York resident, in 1979, chose to wash his mouth out with soap rather than serve 10 days in prison for disorderly conduct and the use of obscenities. Maybe the judge felt the option of cleaning his mouth could serve as a metaphor to clean up his life a bit. Perhaps it’s something we could all take a look at.

We may not be guilty of disorderly conduct but have we taken part in conversations that have brought disrespect to others? Have we been part of sharing comments that have disgraced another human being simply because we disagreed with what they said? Have we had moments of glee when we see someone insulted in the media or on-line because we think they are getting what they deserve? Enough already. It is too distasteful.

It’s time to tidy up our brains and remember that we control the volume and mute buttons. We need to clean things up. Those children we are so concerned about are watching—and learning.

Saving Lives in Saskatchewan

Impaired driving legislation changing in Sask

Another day, another impaired driving column.

I certainly could write that with great cynicism and resignation-as currently, Saskatchewan’s impaired driving rates are 620 per 100,000 people- almost triple the national average of 210 impaired drivers per 100,000.

And 44 percent of traffic deaths in the province are also tied to drinking and driving, according to the government’s own statistics.

To say this is a depressing state of affairs is an understatement, to say the least.

However, there is cause for hope-and dare I say it?- guarded optimism, as Saskatchewan has passed what have been called “game-changing” amendments to the province’s impaired driving penalties in an effort to end the unnecessaryand sometimes, seemingly unending- tragedies on our roadways.

Former Member of Parliament and MLA Allan Kerpan told The Saskatoon Star-Phoenix: “I have watched this process unfold, and I can say that government was very serious about making sound and impactful change.”

Sadly, Kerpan knows all too well the tragic toll impaired driving has taken in this province, as his daughter, Danille was killed by a drunk driver in 2014.

The changes to the Traffic Safety Act were passed unanimously and take effect January 1, 2017.

They include: Zero tolerance for alcohol or drugs for all new drivers and for drivers 21 years of age or younger. Currently, this law applies to all new drivers and drivers 19 years of age or younger. A 60-day licence suspension remains in effect.

-Under the new legislation, experienced drivers charged for the first time with a blood alcohol reading over 0.04 will have their vehicles seized for three days. Currently, there is no vehicle seizure for drivers in these circumstances.

-Ignition interlock laws will be tougher.

Motorists found to be impaired with blood alcohol levels between 0.08 and 0.16 will receive one year for a first offence, three years for a second offence, and 10 years for three offences or more. For drivers with blood alcohol levels over 0.16- or drivers who refuse to provide a breath sample- the duration will be two years for a first offence, five years for a second offence and after that, 10 years.

-Currently, cell phone use by drivers is prohibited in Saskatchewan. Under the new legislation, drivers will be prohibited from holding, viewing, using or manipulating a cellphone while driving.

These changes-and more- will have Saskatchewan join Alberta and British Columbia in having some of the strictest impaired driving legislation in the country.

Allan Kerpan says; “With this game-changing legislation, the government can take great credit in knowing they are saving lives in Saskatchewan.”

We can only hope.

In Saskatchewan it seems as though drinking to get drunk is a pastime and with that some people actually feel it’s acceptable to then jump behind the wheel of a vehicle to drive.

This honestly baffles me. You’re endangering not only yourself, but any passengers you convince to get in the vehicle with you and anyone that you meet on the road.

Throughout high school it was one of those things that speakers would come in and address. I had never been affected by drinking and driving personally. No one I ever knew had died or gone to jail for it. It didn’t seem like a big issue.

But, in grade nine I specifically remember a woman from Saskatoon coming to our school to talk to us about drinking and driving. It was sad, she had lost her daughter to a drunk driver, but as the mother played a recording of her daughter’s voice from a karaoke song, pictures of the girl flashed on across the screen at the front. During the presentation the girl had looked familiar, but it was during these photos that one popped up and my chest tightened.

I didn’t know her personally, but I had seen the photo before. My cousin from Saskatoon had a small school photo up in his room alongside photos of his other friends, but this one didn’t change from year to year, and it was the one that had just crossed the screen. The lady speaking at the front of the gym was in fact the mother of my cousin’s friend.

drunk driver in any way, but the action all of a sudden became more real.

The government is making changes in the new year: zero tolerance for alcohol or drugs for drivers 21-years-old and younger, vehicle seizures for those charged for the first time with a blood alcohol content of over 0.04, strengthened ignition interlock laws, and prohibition from using a cell phone while driving including holding, viewing, or using the cell phone.

I think it’s important to make these laws into very serious ones, but will changing laws actually have an impact on the numbers? Will a fine or vehicle seizure stop someone from getting behind the wheel?

When someone is intoxicated and threatening to drive, is it a reminder of the legislation that gets them to toss the keys to someone else, or is it a reminder that they could kill themselves or take someone else’s life? I don’t know. But, I am glad the laws are changing and becoming harsher. Driving is extremely dangerous, humans were not meant to go those speeds… if we were we’d be able to run that fast like a cheetah. And on top of that you’ve got a mass of weight behind you, something that large, going that quickly, with people who have limited reaction times is dangerous.

So, any attempt at preventing people from endangering others while on the road is a step in the right direction.

But, as my story shows… it might not be taken seriously until it’s somehow made to resonate with people on a human level, not just a legislative one. And for many, that comes when it’s already too late.

The Football Five: Carlyle players help Moosomin Generals make team history Lynne Bell

Five players from Carlyle were part of the Manitoba League’s Moosomin Generals football team, who captured second-place in the league this year in a season-ender against the first place Dauphin Clippers. Although the final game ended in a 34- 8 upset, team captain Nathen Schmidt of Carlyle says: “This was the first time the guys ever made it to the final. I was happy because everybody played hard and helped to make (team) history.

Everybody gave it their all and over the regular season, our defense only let in 70 points and our offence scored 270 points. I feel confident that next season the team can win the championship. Five football players from Carlyle helped make team history as they catapulted the Moosomin Generals to second-place in the Manitoba Football League in a season-ending final against the Dauphin Clippers on Saturday, Nov. 5 in Dauphin, Manitoba.

Team captains- running back Louis Halbgewachs and linebacker Nathen Schmidt- along with their teammates safety Halen Duhaime, defensive lineman Zach Faber and fullback Jarred Valentine were part of a 22-player Moosomin roster.

The final score was 34-8 for the Clippers, and Halbgewachs says, “Last year at the end of spring season, I honestly thought we could get first.

But this season, a lot of guys got banged up and we had a shortage of guys, too.”

“It’s nine-man football,” adds Halbgewachs. “And when you play with less than twenty players on average against teams like Dauphin and Neepawa who have 40 to 50 players... It makes me proud of my team for getting as far as we did.”

“We had a lot of guys on the field who could hardly walk, due to injuries. But I’m so proud of the guys for not quitting, even though we were losing.”

“With Moosomin being the only team from Saskatchewan in the league, you’re not just playing for that team, you’re playing for Saskatchewan.”

“I just think it’s cool that these guys from Carlyle make up a third of the team and they’re the leaders of the team, because of the respect they bring to the team and to the game.”

Veteran Zach Faber-who has been with the team for four years-agrees.

The defensive lineman says, “We’ve never, ever been near the semi-final before this. That’s why this season was so amazing. We lost a bunch of good players who graduated and we

had a bunch of new guys coming in.

It was incredible.”

“I would really encourage more kids-guys and girls- to play football. As soon as I came, the team welcomed me and others with open arms. There are players from Moosomin and all of us from Carlyle, but there are also players on our team from Redvers and Rocanville and from Elkhorn, Manitoba. We really came together as a team and part of that is because of our captains. They really helped to motivate us.”

Fullback Jarred Valentine says:

“I knew it was a good game and even though we didn’t finish in first place, everybody gave it their best.”

Safety Halen Duhaime says that the tone was set from the start of the season. When asked, Duhaime says one of his most memorable moments of the season was: “Probably when we were playing Souris and Nathen (Schmidt) slammed a guy during our first game. It kind of hyped everyone up.”

Schmidt-who has played his final season with the Generals as he prepares to graduate this year, says as team captain: “This was the first time the guys ever made it to the final. I was happy because everybody played hard and helped to make (team) history. Everybody gave it their all and over the regular season, our defense only let in 70 points and our offence scored 270 points. I feel confident that next season, the team can win the championship.”

“They’ll be so much better; it’s unfinished business.”

“Our goal next year is to win the championship,” adds Halbgewachs.

“As a team, we want to make an actual impact and leave a legacy.”

Cougars earn exciting overtime win Kelly Running Observer Staff

The Carlyle PureChem Cougars had a couple of hard fought battles last week with a game in Oxbow on Wednesday, Nov. 16, and on in Carlyle on Friday, Nov. 18. The home game against the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings marked the Cougars’ first win of the season.

The game in Oxbow against the Huskies ended in a 6-4 loss to the Cougars, but they battled hard.

Oxbow came out to lead the first period with a goal by captain Jordon Cooney, which was assisted

by Derek Cooney and Kyle Rudnitski. Carlyle answered back shortly after with a goal by Mark Shaw assisted by Zach Brown and Ty Currie.

Oxbow would lead by the end of the first with Dustin Lawson finding the back of the net assisted

by Brycen Odgers and Klae Bayda.

The second period saw Jesse Matthewson score assisted by Tyler Matthewson, but this was quickly answered by Oxbow’s Jordan Cooney assisted by Kyle Rudnitski and Nathen Blommaert. Oxbow took a two goal lead with an unassisted goal by Brycen Mayer. The Cougars were not down and out, however, as they answered back with a goal by Ty Currie which was assisted by Ben Johnstone.

Oxbow was up 4-3 heading into the third. With no goals in the first 14 minutes of play, the Cougars’ captain Ben Johnstone found the back of the net tying the game. His goal was assisted by Kelly Currie and Joel Mack.

With less than five minutes left the Huskies pushed answering Johnstone’s goal a minute later.

Huskies captain Jordon Cooney rung up his third for the night – marking a hattrick – assisted by Kyle Rudnitski.

The Huskies furthered their lead with a goal by Derek Coony assisted by Kyle Rudnitski with 1:11 to go on the clock.

The Cougars put in a solid effort, but they were unable to stop the Huskies on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

Back in the rink on Friday, Nov. 18, the Cougars hosted the Wheat Kings to another packed rink and earned their first win of the season in overtime 5-4.

The second period saw the Wheat Kings earn a larger lead with a goal by Corey Koski assisted by Brendon Vertefeuille and Reid Paterson.

With a score of 3-0 heading into the third, things didn’t look promising for the Cougars; but, they came out on fire in the third with Joel Mack finding the back of the Wheat Kings’ net assisted by Ben Johnstone and Kelly Currie. This was quickly followed by a goal from Billy Greenwood assisted by Brent McLean. Brett Turgeon pushed hard tying the game with an unassisted goal.

Action continued and the Cougars took the lead in the third at 6:40 with Brett Turgeon earning a second goal of the night this time assisted by Jesse Matthewson. However, in a last minute effort the Wheat Kings’ Brock Appleyard earned an unassisted goal with 1:25 left in the game. Tied 4-4, they headed into overtime.

Cougars chalked up their first win of the season and put on an exciting game of hockey in doing so.

Currently leading the east division are the Carnduff Red Devils with three wins and an overtime loss; Redvers with three wins and two losses; Oxbow with two wins and three losses; and Wawota with one win and three losses. Leading in the west are the Bienfait Coalers who are undefeated with four wins; Yellow Grass with two wins, one loss, and one overtime loss; Midale with two wins and four losses; and the Carlyle PureChem Cougars with one win and three losses.

Leading the league in top scorers are Payden Benning of Bienfait (13 points), Riley Tetreault of Bienfait (12 points), Dylan Herzberg of Bienfait (11 points), Justin Lamontagne of Wawota (9 points), Jordan Miller of Redvers (8 points), Brad Tomiski of Midale (8 points), Brent Struble of Wawota (8 points), Matt Audett of Carnduff (7 points), Garrett Sherlock of Midale (7 points), and Tyler Houim of Midale (7 points).

The next action for the Cougars comes on Thursday, Nov. 24, as the Cougars travel to Yellow Grass. They then return home on Friday, Nov. 25, to face the Bienfait Coalers at 8 p.m.

Stormchaser Chris Chittick of CMT’s “Tornado Hunters” not only stars in a TV show; he also visits schools in Canada and the U.S. speaking to students of all ages about storms, science and safety.

Chittick, who visited Arcola School on Friday, Nov. 18, says: “I’ve been chasing storms since 1998 and after each (stormchasing) season, I’ve got lots of fresh content to share.”

Arcola School hosted one of the stars of CMT’s “Tornado Hunters”, Chris Chittick on Friday, Nov. 18. Chittick’s two presentations-to elementary and high school students, respectively-featured a speech on the science behind the storms, personal anecdotes, and thrilling video footage.

Betting on success...the Bear Claw Casino celebrates 20 years

By Connie Schwalm When it all began there might well have been some who were betting that it wouldn’t work.

In 1993, the Bear Claw Casino was opened on the White Bear First Nation. That original casino challenged provincial law...and was subsequently shut down. However, with the FSIN First Nation Gaming Act (which came into effect on June 10, 1995) and the creation of SIGA (the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority) First Nations people were able to establish and operate gaming destination resorts on their land. As a result, the Bear Claw Casino was reopened at its present location on the White Bear First Nation in November 1996.

On Saturday, Nov. 12, celebrations were held to mark to honour the 20th Anniversary of the Bear Claw Casino and Hotel. The celebrations included an official cake cutting, Wooden Face Drum and Performers and a performance by the rock band “Ettinger”.

Vanessa Big Eagle is Marketing Manager for the Bear Claw Casino and Hotel. She was born on the White Bear First Nation. Although she has since moved to Pheasant Rump First Nation, Vanessa has had the opportunity to see first-hand the benefits that the Bear Claw Casino has brought to White Bear.

“Originally, the casino was intended as a way to provide employment for those on the White Bear First Nation. The people who worked to set up the first casino had done some research. They noted that gaming/gambling was an inherent Treaty Right. And it is a traditional form of entertainment. When you study traditions like the Moccasin Games, you understand the First Nations People

like to play games. So, they wanted to establish their own gaming house on First Nations Territory.”

“The Bear Claw Casino has brought a lot of changes to the White Bear First Nation. The quality of life has improved here. People have good jobs. They are living in better homes and driving better cars. Their children are involved in sports and other activities. The casino is a tremendous asset to our community.”

Vanessa notes that the benefits from gaming are distributed through SIGA to First Nations people throughout the province.

“There are 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan. Fifty per cent of the revenue from SIGA Casinos is distributed to all of these First Nations through the First Nations Trust. 25% of the revenue goes to Community Development Corporations which distribute the money to charities and not-for-profit community organizations. Money which goes to the First Nations is used to fund things like programming for children and our elders.”

(According to SIGA’s website the remaining 25% of the revenue that SIGA receives through gaming goes into the Provincial General Revenue Fund.)

Vanessa also sees the benefits from the Bear Claw Casino and Hotel extending well beyond the White Bear First Nation and into surrounding communities.

“Among our 135 employees, there are some that come from neighboring communities like Carlyle and Kennedy. So, there are economic and employment benefits for these communities as well. But for me, it’s even more significant to see the way in which the Bear Claw Casino and Hotel has helped to bridge the gap between

As she looks forward, Vanessa sees continued growth flourishing at the Bear Claw Casino and Hotel.

for us. We have a new General Manager, Jonathan Pasap. He comes here with many new ideas and a fresh vision. We are looking forward to a bright future here!”

MARGARET NEWTON (1887-1971) Pioneering plant pathologist

Plant pathology (the study of diseases in plants) might seldom be the star of movie plots and mainstream media, but its importance should not be underestimated. Indeed, understanding how and why plants get sick is crucial to maintaining a steady supply of food for the world’s growing population. In the early twentieth century, a Canadian plant pathologist gained international recognition thanks to a breakthrough discovery that forever changed the face of agriculture. Her name was Doctor Margaret Newton, born in Montreal in 1887.

In 1916, cereal crops in western Canada suffered an epidemic of stem rust that destroyed over 100 million bushels of wheat and cost farmers more than $200 million in damages. As local food supplies slowly recovered from the devastating event, those involved in the agricultural sector scrambled to understand what had happened—and how to prevent it from happening again. Doctor W.P. Fraser, of McGill University in Montreal, was one of the scientists on the case. He was also Margaret Newton’s adviser, and asked his promising pupil to review the samples he’d collected. This simple request led Newton, determined to provide farmers with a solution, to focus her studies on stem rust.

Fast-forward to 1922. Margaret Newton had just become the first Canadian woman to hold a doctorate in agriculture, and her work on stem rust was drawing worldwide attention. When the Canadian government established the Dominion Rust Research Laboratory in Winnipeg (known colloquially as Rust Lab), Dr. Newton was an obvious choice for a position at the facility. Described as a persistent researcher who often “worked to the point of exhaustion,” Newton eventually made the groundbreaking discovery that everyone was waiting for: successfully cracking the genetic code of the disease. Her findings paved the way for the very first rust-resistant crop varieties.

Prolonged exposure to infected plant matter forced Dr. Newton into an early retirement from Rust Lab in 1945. She then relocated to Victoria, British Columbia, and continued to act as the world’s leading authority on stem rust. After saving countless Canadian crops, she helped numerous other countries win their own battle against the disease. Today, for farmers across the globe, stem rust—once to blame for millions of destroyed crops each year—is no longer a threat.

When Margaret Newton was born, the world was home to around 1.5 billion people. Currently, seven billion of us share the same space. And while food security is still a problem for many, even in Canada, Dr. Newton’s pioneering research—which earned her innumerable honours and awards—gave us tools to create a future without hunger.

CANADA’S LEBANESE COMMUNITY Nearly 200,000 Canadians claimed Lebanese ancestry on the 2011 National Household Survey. These citizens make up, by far, the largest group of Canadians with Arabic-speaking roots. Unlike many immigrant factions, people from Lebanon tend to favour Quebec when choosing a place to live because of the province’s French-speaking majority. Currently, at least half of the community resides in Montreal; its remaining members are scattered relatively evenly across the country, with Ottawa and Halifax having a slightly higher than average population.

The first Lebanese immigrants came to Canada in the early 1880s, mainly citing economic reasons for their relocation. The community remained small until post-war legislation changes prompted a general increase in immigration that lasted through the 1950s and 60s. From 1975 to 1990, the Lebanese Civil War was responsible for the largest influx of Lebanese immigration in Canadian history. During this period, Canada was one of the only countries that implemented programs to help those fleeing the violent conflict. To facilitate the transition, the Canadian government set up an office in Cyprus where Lebanese refugees were processed before travelling to their new northern home.

Entrepreneur and television personality Kevin O’Leary (who starred in Dragons’ Den and Shark Tank) is one of many notable Canadians with Lebanese ancestry. Some well-known athletes that share the same heritage include hockey players Alain Nasreddine and Ed Hatoum as well as former CFL wide receiver David Azzi. On the more creative side of the spectrum, many Lebanese-Canadians have successful musical careers, including Paul Anka, K.Maro, Norman Brooks and Karl Wolf; others, like Rawi Hage and Wajdi Mouawad, contribute to Canada’s literary scene with both English and Frenchlanguage works.

Romo bumped by rookie QB star

By Bruce Penton It famously happened to Wally Pipp in baseball. Now, about 90 years later, it looks like it might happen to Tony Romo in football.

Pipp was the regular first baseman for the New York Yankees when, the story goes, a headache sidelined him one day. Taking his place was young slugger Lou Gehrig, who went on to play more than 2,100 consecutive games over 14 seasons.

Pipp was finished with the Yanks. His headache cost him his ca-

Fast forward to 2016. It was late August when Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo injured his back in the Cowboys’ first preseason game against Seattle. Now, it’s late November, Romo’s back is healed, but he is definitely the secondstringer thanks to the outstanding play of his replacement, Mississippi State grad Dak Prescott.

What gifts shall I give?

By Linda Wegner I began Christmas shopping in earnest yesterday; well, I purchased one gift so that counts, doesn’t it?

The combination of age-related lack of desire to hit the malls, a pareddown revenue stream and the realization that I have a lot of treasured stuff I’d rather pass on than buy more, has made this year particularly challenging. Ignoring all that, I headed for one of the biggest annual Christmas craft shows in town. The crowds, merchandise and talent of our city’s residents were impressive.

Of all the displays of homemade jewellery, I was most intrigued by one that could almost be called a “morphing of ugly into unique but not quite beautiful” pieces. Earrings and broaches were large and bold in shape and design but that wasn’t what I found most interesting. Every piece was the same colour: dull black with no luminosity, created from something possessing what I would

call a curious sense of déjà vu. I was right. Sitting at the bottom of a rack of earrings was a simple note stating that each piece had been made from old bicycle tires or parts. Though these creations were far from what I was looking for as a gift, I’ve been thinking about them and their origin.

Who but an artist could see a thing of beauty in a pile of broken down bikes?

My musings led me to a Gaither song that goes this way: “Something beautiful, something good. All my confusion, He understood. All I had to offer Him was brokenness and strife but He made something beautiful of my life.”

As we near Christmas, let’s not forget God’s kind of giving: in exchange for my broken self He gives unconditional grace…and, that’s just the beginning of what has He has in store for us!

Margaret Peet spent a few days holidays from November 10-14 visiting with her daughter, Jolene and Paul Hofmann and her grandsons Colin and Cole at Viking, AB. Spending Monday, Nov. 14 in Estevan were Dale and Holy Anthony and Gray and Edel Cowan.

Murray Cowan, Estevan spent a few days (Nov.1921) visiting at the farm with his parents, Gray and Edel, and helped his dad do a little hunting.

Visiting with Shelly, Tim and Ainsley Cowan on Nov. 20 were her parents Myron and Orlys Nilsen and her sister Dice Sauder all of Minot. They also attended the Craft & Trade Show.

On Sunday, Nov. 20 it was Alida’s Annual Craft & Trade Show with 26 different vendors attending the show for a total of 32 tables. There was an excellent crowd that attended and enjoyed the delicious meal which was served at noon and they also seemed to enjoy browsing among the exhibit tables. Most of the vendors were pleased with the day as well. There were a few draws made from some of the tables – winners were as follows – The Amaryllis plant (from Faye Walker) won by Shanna Carriere; The 50-50 tickets (Rec. Bd.) winner Mark Beriault ($46). A Christmas board plaque (Shanna Hamilton) winner Gail McLachlin. There were other table draws but unfortunately I was not notified of the winners. However, Congratulations to all the lucky winners! All in all it was a very successful event for the Alida Rec. Board as they made approximately $1200.00 for the Alida Rink Reno Fund – much appreciation to all supporters. Hope we see you again next year if all is a go.

Another month is just about gone and we have had great weather for November. One can begin to feel the nip in the air now, but not bad considering the time of year, this will definitely help shorten the winter and let’ hope that the rest of the season won’t be too bad. Good luck and happy shopping as there’s only about 26 days left before Christmas.

There are lots of different faces around and about town now as it is the joyous (for some) or dreaded (for others) hunting season – do be careful out there while you do your hunting, respect the landowners property and before you know it another season will be over for another year and hopefully for those who do enjoy it, you have had a successful hunt.

Keep in mind folks that it is soon time for the Alida annual Christmas Fundraiser event coming up in December with some great entertainment being featured. Watch for poster, ads etc.

It will be a sad week/month/year for readers and supporters of the Redvers Optimist as Nov. 26 is their last issue to be published. I know I for one will miss reading up on the happenings going on in and around Redvers and area – seeing the weekly write-ups by Jocelyn and Krystyn which always brought a smile and/or some memories back – and of course the local pictures (trying to pick out someone you may know). It’ll be a service greatly missed.

Hopefully one will be able to keep up with news and happening of Redvers and area in the remaining three local papers.

Congratulations to the following: Dain Sorenson of Moosomin who received the 2016 Outstanding New Journeyperson Award in the Construction Electrician trade. He received this award at a ceremony in Regina. He also received the George Pellerin Memorial Scholarship for having the highest marks in the province across all trades. (Dain is married to Larissa Hansen); to Trystan Meyers (Dj Anchor)of Saskatoon who was voted best Saskatoon DJ for 2016 by Planet S Magazine; to the Moosomin Generals Football Team who participated in the final game against the Dauphin Clippers. Over the years several local boys were on this team. Although we don’t any members this year we do have Dextor Mondor who is the coach of the Generals; to Evelyn Green and Debbie Phillips and all their helpers and contributors who packed 127 shoe boxes which will be sent overseas to needy children.

Awesome!

The Congregations of Wawota and Maryfield United Churches joined in Maryfield for a joint service last Sunday. The service was followed by a pot luck lunch and the local and Crossroads meetings.

In memory of Leonard Cohen

“The day of his death was a dark cold day

The death of the poet is kept from his poems” (from “In Memory of W.B. Yeats” by W.H. Auden line 6 & 11) Leonard Cohen was a rare poet, and we are left to ponder the impact of his gifts. Infrequently do we find someone who so successfully makes a living as a poet. And that may be a reflection of how little we value art in our lives.

Leonard Cohen touched our lives. As an English teacher I was privileged to share his poetry with students from the 1960’s to the 1990’s. He was popular with students and their parents. How did this happen?

The role of the poet is to entertain the people, to drive away their cares and to put them in touch with God. I borrow here from Shevchenko’s “Perebendia”. The poet tricks the people with his kobza, his music. But at night Perebendia sits on the grave mounds and communes with his God. The grandson of a rabbi, Cohen grew up immersed in Jewish culture. “Basically he was born to be a rabbi,” says biographer Sylvie Simmons. Cohen was deeply spiritual. In his last album You Want It Darker he says, “Hineni, hineni” – “here I am”, I’m ready to act in service.

In his letter to a dying Marianne he says, “we are really so old and our bodies are falling apart and I think I will follow you very soon… if you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine,” Of Jesus Cohen says, “Any guy who says ‘Blessed are the poor. Blessed are the meek’ has got to be a figure of unparalleled generosity… A

generosity that would overthrow the world if it was embraced because nothing would weather that compassion.”

Spiritual all his life, Cohen was ordained a Buddhist monk in 1996 and spent some time in a monastery. The depth of his daily walk with God impacts us as well. He took his religion very seriously. As a result his readers are more in touch with the bible: “Is there no Joab for tomorrow night with his three darts and a great heap of stone?” (“Prayer for Sunset” Leonard Cohen) The sun has set for Cohen, but the power of his poetry lives on. The raw sensuality of his lyrics appeals to us: “My mouth on the dew of your thighs.

And I’ll bury my soul in a scrapbook, With the photographs there, and the moss.

And I’ll yield to the flood of your beauty” (from “Take this waltz”) “Silence and a deeper silence when the crickets Hesitate” “Like a bird on a wire Like a drunk in a midnight choir, I have tried in my life to be free” “When you’re not feeling holy, your loneliness says that you’ve sinned.”

There is a crack in everything, That’s how the light gets in” “I have tried in my way to be free” “I did my best, it wasn’t much…I’ve told the truth, I

didn’t come all this way to fool you.”

Cohen described writing poetry as “sacred mechanics”. As a wordsmith he gave proof to Coleridge’s dictum that poetry is the best words in the best order.

Cohen used his gift to praise God, even though his attempts sometimes seemed to him like “a cold and very lonely Hallelujah”. Saint and sinner, in the end Cohen stood before his God “with nothing on [his] tongue but Hallelujah”.

Shortage of Canadians working in agriculture to double by 2025 Ottawa, ON – The gap between labour demand and the domestic workforce in agriculture has doubled from 30,000 to 59,000 in the past 10 years and projections indicate that by 2025, the Canadian agri-workforce could be short workers for 114,000 jobs. This is a key finding of newly released Agriculture 2025: How the Sector’s Labour Challenges Will Shape its Future research by the Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council (CAHRC). The LMI research also revealed that primary agriculture has the highest industry job vacancy rate at seven per cent.

“The sustainability and future growth of Canada’s agriculture and agri-food industry is at risk,” explains Portia MacDonald-Dewhirst, CAHRC Executive Director. “It is critically important that this risk is acknowledged and mitigated in an intentional and strategic way. “The agriculture industry has been encouraging young people and workers from other sectors to get into agriculture as a career. Despite extensive efforts gaps still exist and there still will be a large void in the future.

Labour shortages create risks to farmers who can only hope they will have the same or greater access to both domestic and foreign workers in the future as they do now. The LMI study examined only primary production; agri-food industries such as food and beverage processors or input suppliers, which have additional labour demands, were not considered in the research. The research indicates that the worker shortage is critical today and will be even more so 10 years from now, with potentially serious consequences for business viability, industry sustainability and future growth. Access to less labour for Canadian farmers now and into the future will affect food security for Canadian consumers and will also affect export potential of Canada’s

entire agri-food industry.

To address the labour issues identified in the research, CAHRC, with the help of the Government of Canada, has developed agriculture-specific human resource (HR) tools designed to support modern farm operations to manage their workforce.

CAHRC offers Agri Skills, online and in-person training programs, and the Agri HR Toolkit – an online resource guide and templates to address the HR needs of any business. For agricultural organizations there are customized labour issues briefings that apply the new research to specific commodities and provinces, to explore the labour implications within their specific area.

The Agriculture 2025: How the Sector’s Labour Challenges Will Shape its Future research can be downloaded at http://www.cahrc-ccrha.ca/agriLMI.ca and was validated through industry consultations conducted Canada-wide including: 1034 surveys of employers, workers and industry stakeholders; 80 phone interviews; six focus groups for a total of more than 100 participants; and seven webinars focused on specific commodity groups with 100 participants in total. The LMI research was funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Sectoral Initiatives Program.

The Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council works with industry leaders, governments and educational stakeholders to research, develop and communicate solutions to the challenges in employment and skills development in primary agriculture. Rural Sask. will feel budget pain

By Murray Mandryk Breathe deep. This is going to hurt a bit.

It’s not something you want to hear form your doctor … or your Finance Minister at a time when he’s just announced the $400 million provincial deficit has just leapt to $1 billion.

We are all about to feel the pain.

No, rural Saskatchewan, your name didn’t come up, specifically.

One even suspects that governance structure for things like rural municipalities will be maintained _ notwithstanding that the Saskatchewan Party government has made it know local school and health boards are clearly targets for reduction.

It’s passing strange, given that the province only has 28 school boards compared with 111 in 1992. By comparison, there are 296 rural municipalities _ only three less than the 299 RMs we had in 1992.

But by no stretch of the imagination does that mean that rural Saskatchewan will emerge unscathed.

Can the government continue to fund RMs or towns and smaller cities at the current level? Might we see a considerable shift in property taxes?

Will rural school boards have to seriously look at the teaching complement? Will busing for rural kids continue?

And might we be

in for another round of rural and smaller city hospital cuts?

All of these questions are now in play in the wake of current Finance Minister Kevin Doherty’s 2016-17 midyear budget update that sees the deficit grow to $805.6 million from the $434.2 million predicted in June — up by $371.4 million.

Add a $235.5 million deficit at the Workers’ Compensation Board (largely due to a $281-million rebate to businesses in June) and the total summary deficit becomes $1.0421 billion.

That makes for a billion-dollar annual deficit _ the likes of which we haven’t seen since the Grant Devine Progressive Conservative government of the 1980s when billion-dollar annual deficits were the norm.

And most of rural Saskatchewan remembers the pain that came after the 1992 and 1993 budgets when the Roy Romanow NDP government closed 52 rural hospitals.

Certainly, it would be tough for anyone not to remember those days, given that the Sask.

Party has spent the past nine years reminding voters about the rural school and hospital closings.

The difference this time is that Premier Brad Wall and his Sask.

Party will not have the luxury of blaming past administrations for current problems.

This is Wall’s and Doherty’s mess to fix over the next four years.

And make no mistake that we are in a mess. Doherty announced last week he had to borrow $500 million just to pay for the operational costs (line department expenses for schools, hospitals, roads, salaries, etc.) in this year’s budget.

That means $500 million directly added to the debt _ right to the general revenue fund “credit card” debt that now soars to $4.6 billion from $4.1 billion.

Of course, it’s not all bad news.

Credit Doherty for already keeping departmental spending in line.

And (except for potash prices), resource revenues like oil do seem to showing signs of recovery.

Sure, tax revenue was down $400 million from the budget _ largely due to in sales and income tax revenue.

But with a growing population paying taxes, tax revenue could easily recover in coming years.

The bad news is the problem is in the here and now.

“To start moving the province back to balance, significant restraint measures are needed,” Doherty said.

That includes a hiring freeze, tougher wage negotiation, and, yes, tax increases that the Sask. Party said it wouldn’t impose.

Even taxes like the

$121-million farm fuel tax exemption, one the Provincial Auditor has questioned,_ or the PST exemptions on fertilizer, seed, machinery repair, etc. could be on the table.

Breathe deep, rural Saskatchewan.

Is big really better?

By Calvin Daniels Big, at least in terms of business, is generally seen as better.

That certainly extends to farming where aneighbour has bought out and absorbed neighbour for decades dating back essentially to the end of World War One, at least here in Canada.

Of course farm consolidation is not unique to Canada. It is a rather general trend in terms of dryland farming areas around the world.

The idea of growth for farmers is all about creating economies of scale, buying more fertilizer or agricultural protection products in order to reduce costs. You are able to spread the costs of the overall farm operation over more acres, and that should allow better gross returns.

But, on the flipside, there are concerns corporate growth, through merger, may not be a great thing for farmers because the idea of competition holding prices in line is reduced.

Not that farmers have much say in things.

Go back the days I was in high school and farm machinery dealerships were still selling Allis Chalmers, Co-op Implements, White, Cockshutt, and a handful of others that have long fallen by the wayside. Farmers can of course still purchase farm equipment, but whether prices are controlled by competition better today than a few decades ago is a question for economists.

It is a question that is very current for producers today, since a number of major mergers have taken place in the past couple of years which will effect competition in areas which directly impact farming.

Dow Chemical and Dupont officially announced $130 billion merger to form ag-chem giant DowDuPont.A few months later ChemChina made a $43 billion move for Swiss ag chemicals and seed giant Syngenta AG. Then, in September 2016 Germany’s Bayer

swooped in for Monsanto in a $66 billion takeover, during the same week as Potash Corp of Saskatchewan merged with Agrium to create the largest fertilizer giant in the world valued at $36 billion.

Business suggests competition remains, suggesting the number of companies is not the key to keeping prices in line.

That has some definite truth to it, since we still have a number of Canadian banks, but their products, services and fees are largely clones of one another.

And gas station prices at the pumps move in virtual lockstep regardless of company sign in front.

It comes down to balance. Competition can exist with limited competitors, and be a mirage with many in the field.

Although ultimately the larger business gets, farm, or otherwise, the closer to dominating control we may get.

Alameda 4-H Beef Club news The Alameda 4-H Beef Club had their November meeting at the Alameda Legion.

This month we had some members attend the Yorkton oral Judging clinic on November 5. Also that day we had some members attend a grooming demo at Chopper K Auction Mart put on by Tableland Cattle Co. All kids enjoyed their days and

came out of each respective clinic with some new knowledge to help them out.

We also entered 4 teams into Team Grooming at Canadian Western Agribition. So if you are in Regina on Monday November 21 the competition starts at 3.

Our club is all geared up for the Christmas season and have decided on a trip to a Ski Hill for our Christmas party on Dec. 30th.

We have also planned a couple of tours for Dec 17. We are hoping to tour Paton’s PMU barn as well as a Feed lot. We are looking forward to the day.
