Juno Award nominee Craig Cardiff coming to Forget Theresa Nett Observer Staff

Craig Cardiff is a Canadian folk singer who travels the world hoping to open the hearts of his audience and inspire them, even if they didn’t plan on it.

He was nominated for a Juno Award and was also nominated at the Canadian Folk Music Festive. Cardiff is coming to The Happy Nun in Forget on Sept. 15.

Originally from Ontario Cardiff grew up with an interest in music. “I started playing just like anybody else does, because they’re not good at sport, it’s a scientific fact.” As a 14 yrs, his first real exposure to live performances came from a teacher at his school who would schedule shows at coffee houses. One song stuck in his mind for good.

“Sinead O’Connor’s Black Boys on Motorcycles. I didn’t understand a thing she was saying, or what she was talking about, but I understood everything by the way she sang it,” said Cardiff. It was performed by an older student. “I didn’t know anything about the U.K. or race relations. I thought “wow, in three and half minutes, someone could

take me across and ocean.”

Cardiff has some thoughts on modern society. “In terms of art and music that challenges (each other); a lot of it has been rubbed out. I think that’s a huge negative. You see people shutting down if you get to political. I think it’s not how people want to spend their leisure time, with any think component in it. It’s like you go to a movie, and you know you’ll get a certain amount of pleasure, the popcorn will be warm, and taste buttery.”

Cardiff thinks people have become a bit predictable in their ideas of what is enjoyable, and it’s at a loss to their own selves.”I think the trick is to weave it (challenges) into your music or art so that it touches people and helps people, even if it’s not what they came for.”

Cardiff has also appeared on Ted X, a university version of Tedtalks, a few times.

He had been invited by some of the organizers.

I’ve had that have done the most teaching in my life. You’re not supposed to talk about those failures, but that’s the truth in them.”

“The number of people I meet that talk about wanting to be a writer, or musician, as soon as they sneak it out, into the conversation, they also explain why they aren’t really one. I only play on weekends, that type of thing. Embrace what you’re doing, it’s still just as valid,” said Cardiff. “And don’t get stuck in the idea of comparison, no good art comes from comparison or what we think we were supposed to do.”

Cardiff has been handing out books at his shows to the audience for the last four years asking them to write down anything that’s true. He then waits until he’s performed a few more times before he reads them, and he has started to incorporate things people write into his music. He will be touring across the U.S. and in Europe this coming winter.

One of his favorite trips so far was to Hong Kong. “It was amazing and crazy, I understand every Gibson science fiction novel now with a new perspective. We were filming one of my video in the market there, one stall had every LED light you could imagine, beside it was every mechanical bird in a cage that you would have never thought

Weekly RCMP report Theresa Nett Observer Staff

An interview with Detachment Commander Darren Simons The Carlyle RCMP detachment responded to several calls service from Thursday, July 26 to the morning of Thursday, August 2.

911/False alarms An order was put in at Sasktel to change a phone line after 6 static calls, all false alarms over the last week, were placed by a residential phone line.

Assault In Carlyle Area an assault call was responded to that ended up with one individual arrested and charged.

There was also an assault call in Kisbey, no charges were laid. A second assault call from Carlyle area both individuals were charged.

SCAN Assistance Police assisted SCAN by signing documents for a landlord to remove a tenant from a rental property were there had been suspected drug trafficking, yet police could not press charges.

Fire Department Assistance One police member put out a fire that had originated in a power box, and a second officer

help the volunteer police to extinguish the rest of the fire that had spread throughout the apartment building..

Impaired Driving There were four impaired calls placed, two calls resulted in charges.

In one case there had been a collision and a person had been transported by STARS to the hospital in Regina Drug Trafficking Two cases involving drug trafficking have are under investigation in the Carlyle Area this week. Erratic Driving A call came in of an erratic driving on highway 13 throwing beer cans out of the car window driving near Kisby.

Police were unable to locate the vehicle.

Theft A Carlyle business reported shoplifting and it is still under investigation.

Trafficking Illegal Substance A suspect for drug trafficking has been reported and is still under investigation.

Police cannot release the area it occurred while the investigation is ongoing.

Mental Health Two calls were responded to about mental health, in one case the person had overdosed on drugs and was flown to a hospital in Regina.

Mischief A person was trying to enter a house in the Carlyle Area, there was concern over the children in the house and

Saskarc Group, sponsors and Oxbow community donate over $11,000 to Oxbow Fire Department On July 31, the Saskarc Group, along with Redhawk, Conquest Equipment, Mick’s, Spearing, Bow Wood and Mayco, with donations from the community, collectively donated over $11,000 to the Oxbow Fire Department.

The cheque was presented to the Oxbow Fire Department at a

BBQ Fundraiser event held on July 31st, where long-service awards were presented to two Oxbow Fire Department members. Around 300 members from the community showed up to enjoy a BBQ and various other activities along with the long-service awards.

The Oxbow Fire Department is comprised

of volunteer firefighters who provide invaluable fire and rescue services to the town of Oxbow and surrounding communities.

By Linda Wegner According to articles published by two Canadian news agencies I found the following information: Canada is the third most sleep-deprived country, tied with the U.S. (Global News 2012) From the second source a 2017 CTV news article titled “Five shocking habits about Canadians sleeping patterns”: half of us have trouble getting to sleep; about a third of us aren’t getting enough sleep; of those who do sleep, only half find the sleep refreshing.

Not only that, but apparently, we’re getting even

less sleep than we did a decade ago. The last “fact” says that women sleep longer than men.

Hmm, not sure about that one.

Also of interest, though not surprising, much sleep deprivation can be attributed to too much screen time; we’re tied to computers and smart phones, to name just two distractions.

Though the reasons cited above rank high in the cause of sleep deprivation, who of us hasn’t lain awake at night concerned about our children, health issues, financial struggles or a multitude of other

Carter Morrison hangs out with golf pro Graham Delaet Theresa Nett Observer Staff

Carter Morrison is the spokesperson for the Ronald McDonald House and has appeared on its behalf at numerous events to help raise funds and awareness. On July 11, Morrison got to meet pro golfer Graham Delaet, and spend the day be his side on the greens.

The Graham and Ruby Delaet foundation hold a Grand Slam golf tournament every year and then donate the proceeds towards helping children’s’ welfare and to improve their health. So far the foundation has donate over 1.5 million since 2013. This year the proceeds are being given to The Ronald McDonald House in Saskatchewan.

“It was a couple of days I will never forget. It was a dream to spend the day with Graham Delaet who isn’t just a professional golfer but a nice person. It was amazing!” said Morrison, age 14yrs. “He couldn’t swing the club because he’s getting ready for surgery after a back injury, but he showed me some pretty cool tricks with it.” Morrison and his family are big golfers themselves, and Morrison love to play. The opportunity to meet Delaet and spend a day with him was very exciting.

The Grand Slam was held in Saskatoon at the Willows Golf Club. “We want to thank the Ronald McDonald House for inviting Carter and the family to the event,” said Lisa Morrison, Carter Morrison’s Mom.

Moving here from Vancouver, I found I’m not accustomed to the wondrous plenty of black flies that co-exist in this area. In Vancouver you might see one here or there, but nothing really noticeable.

Here I have the pleasure of sitting out my back deck and having 8-10 flies at the same time vying for the best place to land and sit on me. Even when I swat them away, they just circle and come back and quite often like to land on my head. They like to eat what’s in my sweat.

A few have gotten into the house here and there - my screen door needs a bit of fixing - but I didn’t think too much of it. Aside from the annoyance of them buzzing around and landing on me, my favorite time of all is first thing in the morning when I wake up, and still under the covers they somehow sense it, and start flying around my face. So at this it is time to invest in a fly swatter or a rolled up newspaper also can do the trick.

One morning I got up a bit earlier than usual at around 6 a.m., and sat down to do some writing in the living room. It’s an open concept type of cabin that I live in where the kitchen and living room are one big room, with bedrooms off to the sides. There is tile flooring in the kitchen and some sort of wood laminate in the living area. To my surprise I saw something crawling on the floor I’ve never seen before. I went to take a closer look at it, and it was one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen. A small white worm “thing” wiggling around on the floor. I got up to get a tissue and grabbed it and threw it in the toilet and went back to my writing.

I eventually got up to get a juice from the kitchen. I stopped dead, there were about 30-40 of these white larva crawling around on my kitchen floor. I hadn’t seen them before because they hide during the daytime, and guess where they were hiding - under my stove. I flicked the light on and they made a break for, heading for cracks, anywhere they could get too.

It was absolutely horrifying. I phoned three exterminators and finally one said to get a can of Raid and kill them. The next morning, up early again, I headed to the kitchen, with Raid in hand and spray I did. But not only did it not seem to affect them, they just crawled away. I figured out if I absolutely soak them in a pool of Raid, they can’t get away and they died in about 2 hours. I still have no idea where they came from originally. I don’t leave food on the floor and am fairly clean. The exterminator told me black flies only go for dead flesh and blood and the garbage can is too deep for them to crawl out of. I looked everywhere for the source like a dead mouse behind the stove...I found nothing...Ewwwwww!

So when I called my mom, I found out some interesting things about my new little neighbours.

Black fly larva is used to treat deep wounds that are unable to close and wounds with rotting tissue because they eat only the bad tissue and are more accurate than a scalpel, and also have disinfectant properties. They were legalized for hospital by the FDA in the U.S. in 2004 because they had been used since time began by human civilizations. The use of larva was also made known in war situations where wounds they had fed on had healed more rapidly, and better in the end, they save lives and limbs.

They are also used to treat animal wounds as well.

While I’m quite happy to still be rid of them in my place as they are one of the grossest things I’ve seen, I guess it is nice to know if I ever need to use one, I can just pluck one of the floor. But seriously, I think I would prefer to just read about them than actually live with them as I continue to experience local life here in Saskatchewan.

Beyond the lens In three months Americans will mark the 55th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Even those of us not alive yet seem to know the story well--or at least a version of it as told by writers and filmmakers.

I am most fascinated by the eyewitness accounts of the people who were there.

The motorcade route was My Outlook Shelley Luedtke lined with people—people waiting to see the President and his wife, maybe hoping to snap a quick picture. Every single person on the street that day had their own story. Unknown to them at the time, their faces, their reactions and their movements were about to become immortalized as part of one of the most talked about moments in American history.

I take a lot of pictures, particularly when we are on holidays. It always amuses me to look through the images and see how many strangers will now be a permanent part of our photo collection. Yes, our family members are front and centre but in the background are countless individuals just going about their day who happened to be in the frame as the picture was snapped. Then I wonder: “How many cameras and phones have pictures of us on them? What was I doing at the time? What does my expression suggest about the moment? And of course…how was my hair?”

I used to take a lot of video too. Yes, used to.

Then I discovered how the lens was obscuring my vision.

It was an amazing August day and we were on a whale watching tour off the coast of Washington.

The sky was brilliant blue, the ocean sparkled and the whales were spectacular. With video camera in hand I was determined to capture every majestic moment of the orcas that afternoon.

The tour was led by well-educated guides help-

ing us locate the whales. There were also 40 sets of eyes on the boat and each audible gasp or squeal alerted us to where we needed to look next. So I’d quickly swing the camera around and hurriedly try to find what had just been witnessed. I was so disappointed knowing I’d missed capturing the wondrous moment on video…and then I realized…I, too, had missed it completely. There I was with the vastness of the Pacific Ocean all around me, watching orcas leap, splash and play, and I was trying to take in the enormous scene through a 2x3 inch video lens.

I put the camera back in its case, moved to a new spot along the railing, and with a huge smile on my face (and at times, a tear in my eye), watched in amazement as these incredible creatures glided past the boat and rose powerfully and majestically up and out of the ocean. It was spectacular—and I was finally fully engaged in it. I can reminisce with ease and my memories are far better than any picture or video clip. In my mind I can recall the gentle breeze across the water, the warmth of the sunshine on my face, the fragrance of the ocean, and, best of all, the delight in my family’s voices as they shared the moment with me. I had to put away the tiny screen so I could see the big picture.

Sometimes we can get a pretty narrow view of life. We have difficulty seeing past the busyness of our day-to-day activities or we question the circumstances we may find ourselves in. It is exactly in those moments we need to step back, pull our eyes away from the small screen of our own lives and look to see all those who are, intentionally or unwittingly, captured in the various frames of our lives, collectively composing a more complete picture.

Seeing our world through a small lens means missing much of what is out there. There is a lot more to the bigger picture and sometimes we need to put the camera down so we can see it…because life is the best viewfinder and our memories are the best storage system of all. That’s my outlook.

Managing Your Money: Family money - a financial checklist for families Raising children is definitely a joy — it’s also expensive. And, while parents are great at keeping track of schedules, appointments and making lists that keep their lives in order, financial planning can be forgotten in the rush and hustle of everyday life.

But it’s important to have a financial plan in place if parents are to successfully navigate the different stages of their children’s lives – so here is a quick reference financial checklist for families.

Pre-baby • Research all available employee and government parental benefits so you’ll know what your income is likely to be while you’re away from work.

• Review your current financial plan(s) and determine what you want to save in advance of having a child and what your family budget will be when your new addition arrives.

• Save early and often, in a tax-efficient way. Use RRSPs and TFSAs to build a nest egg.

• Investigate life, disability

and critical illness insurance.

• Arrange for a last will and testament or update your most recent will to be sure it includes your wishes for your child’s (and any future children) education, care and inheritance. Name a guardian for minor children in the event of your death.

Infant and Toddler (0-5) • Register your child for all government benefits.

• Open an RESP. The government offers a Canadian Education Savings Grant* which can provide 20% or more return on the money you save depending on your income.

The early years (5-10) • Open a savings account for your child.

• Save the receipts from daycare and extra-curricular programs because they may be eligible for the child care expense deduction.

• Re-visit your financial plan and anticipated future costs to be sure you’re saving and investing enough to meet your goals.

Adolescent and Teenager (11-19) • Talk to your kids about

Three tips to protect your pets from summer heat

Heat waves can be dangerous for both you and your four-legged friends. To ensure your pets’ comfort and safety throughout the summer, follow these three tips.

1. Provide water and shade at all times. Don’t let your cat or dog get dehydrated during a heat wave. Always leave a bowl of fresh water at their disposal. Outdoors, make sure

your pet has access to shade at all times.

2. Avoid walking your dog when the sun is at its strongest. It’s highly recommended that you leave your pet indoors between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., as this tends to be the hottest time of the day. Minimize your dog’s risk of heatstroke by taking walks early in the morning or later on in the evening

when the weather is cooler.

3. Never leave your pet in the car when it’s hot out. During the summer, the temperature inside your vehicle can get dangerously high in just a few minutes. Even if you’re parked in the shade, and even if you’ll only be gone for a second, never leave your pet alone in the car — his life depends on it.

On July 29th a celebration of Keith Allison’s life was held at the Kenosee Hall. (He passed away on November 26, 2017). Several displays were shown with pictures of the Allison history, Keith’s musical career and his long time involvement in the business community of Kenosee Lake. Former employees, coworkers and fellow musicians attended to show their respect and enjoy reminiscing and fellowship.

A tasty lunch was served.

Sympathy to Marj Davies and Phil Linder and their families on the passing of their sister, Josephine (Josie) Mattie. She passed away on July 19 at the age of 87 years.

Visiting with Clarence and Carol Westphal over the long weekend were Brett and Kim Westphal of Wrentham, AB , Anne and Lutz Matefeld of Killarney, MN and Colleen Gates of Winnipeg.

Visitors with Evelyn and Michael Green were Evelyn’s daughter, Patricia Freeman, her son and his wife, James and Tricia Freeman all of Woodstock, ON., grandson, Tyson Wight and his wife, Stephanie of Arlington, Washington and their daughter Shalyn Rousseau of Regina gave Grandma Gertie Wight and Doug and Sherri Wight a surprise visit on July 25-27.

Shannon and Dean Joanisse, Brooklyn and her friend Abbey from Abbotsford, B.C. visited with Ken and Anne Wilson They spent time at Kenosee Lake with Kevin and Melinda Wilson and also enjoyed time with their cousins.

Cher Badger spent a week in Illinois last week visiting with her mother, her brother and his son and family. Cher’s friend, Louise Stephen of Moo-

somin travelled to Illinois with her. She had never been there before and was impressed by how big the trees were and how many there were. They reported a great time but were glad to be home.

Shirley Corkish’s company the past few weeks were granddaughter, Eva Corkish of Regina and Jeff and Laura Corkish, Owen, Maddi and Mason of Cottage Grove, Minnesota.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Home Care Nurse for the White Bear First Nations The HCC Nurse is responsible for providing, participating and directing staff in the delivery of a high standard of community health. The HCC Nurse provides assessments for community band members needing assistance at home. The services provided are client and family focused including initial assessment, one to one teaching, treatment, palliative care and rehabilitation to prevent deterioration and promote independence.

The HCC Nurse is part of the Health Care Team and is responsible for liaising between clients, families, community and health care providers to ensure clients and families understand their conditions and treatment and to ensure band members are receiving the appropriate care. The goal is to minimize the effect of the disability and/or illness and support the independence and well-being of individuals.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES • Perform initial assessments and reassessments in a timely manner and as client’s conditions change in order to develop client centered care plans that promote independence; • Provide and delegate nursing care in accordance with best practice standards; • Assign client care based on assessed need; • Maintain complete and confidential client records; • Consult with the client’s physician and other health professionals/agencies; • Complete statistical reporting as required; • Ensure all reports are completed in a timely manner and submitted as required; • Provide direction and supervision to a staff of 2 Home Health Aides; • Prepare annual nursing work plan and budgeting requirements through identified community health priorities; • Act in a manner consistent with professional code of ethics, responsibilities and standards of practice; • Other general duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS • Bachelor of Nursing from accredited post-secondary institute; • Current registration and in good standing with the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association; • Minimum 3 – 5 years of experience working in home and community care; • Valid Saskatchewan driver’s license; • Recent Criminal Records and Vulnerable Sector Check; • Current CPR and First Aid; • Demonstrated supervisory, leadership and management skills; • Self-Directed and strong organizational skills; • Ability to work independently and in a team environment; • Previous experience working with First Nations is an asset.

This position maintains a high standard of childcare by working closely with the parents, daycare staff, and Elders in creating a caring, safe and stimulating environment and provides traditional methods through all teachings.

Credentials and Qualifications Requirements: The Childcare Coordinator’s qualifications and credentials include: • Should possess Certification in Early Childhood Development Program (ECIP) OR Daycare complimented by valid certification in First Aid and Infant and Child CPR. • Medical clearance and immunizations kept up-to-date; • Must have at least three (3) years’ experience in childcare.

Alternately the individual designated as level one (1) should possess a grade 12 education complimented by at least three (3) years’ experience in childcare, Management experience is an asset.

• Must also be working towards valid certification in (ECIP) and First Aid and Infant and Child CPR. • The Coordinator will be required to provide a CPIC and Child abuse records check.

• The ability to speak/understand a First Nations language is an asset.

• Knowledge of Early Childhood Development theory, principals and practices; • Be able to demonstrate confidentiality, tact, diplomacy and discretion at all times; • Knowledge of relevant First Nation policies and procedures • Knowledge of Saskatchewan childcare licensing regulations and requirements in order to develop and deliver or oversee the delivery of culturally appropriate programming.
