TERRA DELTA ROMBERG TIBURON CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES LOCATION: SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA YEAR: FOURTH YEAR - FALL 2017 COLLABORATION: KYLE JOHANNES AND SAMANTHA SOWELL

ENTRANCE PERSPECTIVE

INTRODUCTION TERRA DELTA IS A COMPETITOR IN THE ARCHITECTURE AT ZERO COMPETITION. LOCATED JUST NORTH OF SAN FRANCISCO, TERRA DELTA IS A BAY SIDE COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND VISITOR’S CENTER AT THE ROMBERG TIBURON CENTER OF MARITIME STUDIES. IT BRINGS TOGETHER POETICS OF DESIGN AND THE INTEGRATION OF SYSTEMS TO DEVELOP AN ARCHITECTURE THAT IS CONDUCIVE TO BOTH THE ENVIRONMENT AND ITS INHABITANTS.

IN APPRECIATION OF THE DRASTIC LANDSCAPE OF TIBURON AND ITS VANTAGE POINTS OF THE BAY, TERRA DELTA BECAME A REFLECTION OF OBSERVATION AFTER VISITING THE SITE. ITS STRUCTURE NOT ONLY MIMICS THE UNDULATIONS OF THE TREE CANOPY, BUT IT GIVES WAY FOR AN OPTIMUM RENEWABLE STRATEGY TO ALL SYSTEMS.

THE ARCHITECTURE IS STITCHED INTO THE ROMBERG TIBURON URBAN FABRIC, NESTLING ITSELF INTO THE HILLSIDE FOR IDEAL VIEWS OF THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY. ITS PROGRAMMATIC ELEMENTS FRAME THESE VIEWS, AS WELL AS, FACE ONE ANOTHER FOR A PERMEABLE CIRCULATION. THESE CHOICES EMPHASIZE THE NEED FOR A SELF-GUIDED CAMPUS AND INTERACTIVE LEARNING WITH THE BAY.

TERRA DELTA RECEIVES ITS NAME FROM THE TWO MAIN FASCINATIONS: THE DRAMATIC TOPOGRAPHY AND THE CIRCULATION OF ITS INHABITANTS. THE ARCHITECTURE ACTS AS A DELTA TO ITS VISITORS, PULLING PEOPLE IN AND FEEDING THEM TO THE BAY WITH THE OUTDOOR TERRACE AS ITS PALETTE.

HOSTEL FOR MIGRANTS HELSINKI PORT LOCATION: HELSINKI, FINLAND YEAR: FOURTH YEAR - SUMMER 2017

EXTERIOR PERSPECTIVE

INTRODUCTION THE SWAN IN THE KALEVA EXISTS AS A MEDIATOR BETWEEN THE LIVING WORLD AND THE HEAVENLY WORLD. IT SERVES AS A TRANSPORTER, TRANSPORTING HUMAN LIFE AFTER DEATH TO THE LAND OF THE DEAD.

NEVER CHANGING THEIR DAILY ROUTINE UNLESS BREEDING, THEY CREATE A MOVEMENT THAT BECOMES FLUID WITH DAILY LIFE. THE MEDIATION BETWEEN THE SWAN AT THE LEVEL OF THE WATER BECOMES UNKNOWING. TWO SEPARATE SPACES ARE CREATED ABOVE AND BELOW THE LEVEL OF THE WATER THE SWAN TRANSPORTS ITSELF AROUND.

WHAT LIES UNDERNEATH THE SWAN CANNOT BE SEEN UNLESS TRAVELED INTO THE SPACE BELOW THE MEDIATION LINE. A WHOLE NEW RELATIONSHIP IS FOUND BENEATH THE WATER OF THE SWAN. TWO ROUGH, RUGGED WEBBED FEET HANG BELOW THE SWAN’S BODY, UNSEEN FROM ABOVE. THE TEXTURE OF THE FEET DON’T BECOME SPATIALLY ACCEPTING, BUT RATHER THE SPACES MADE BETWEEN THE WEBS OF THE FEET. HERE A WHOLE NEW WORLD DISTRACTED FROM THAT ABOVE THE SURFACE.

35.951884, -83.866179 IJAMS NATURE CENTER LOCATION: KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE YEAR: THIRD YEAR - SPRING 2017

BOARDWALK PERSPECTIVE

INTRODUCTION BASE CAMP IS LOCATED IN IJAMS NATURE CENTER NEAR DOWNTOWN KNOXVILLE. THE SITE IS LOCATED DIRECTLY ALONG THE EDGE OF MEADE’S QUARRY. MEADE’S QUARRY WAS A QUARRY THAT SURFACED IN THE LATE 1800’S AND QUICKLY BECAME A HOT SPOT OF KNOXVILLE. MEADE’S QUARRY FOUND ITSELF TO BE ONE OF THE MAIN QUARRIES IN KNOXVILLE FOR TENNESSEE’S “PINK MARBLE”. THE QUARRY FLOURISHED UNTIL IT’S DOWNFALL DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION WHERE IT BECAME ABANDONED. OVER MANY YEARS IT BECAME FORGOTTEN AND BEGAN TO FILL UP WITH WATER. IJAMS NATURE CENTER MADE MANY EFFORTS TO BRING BACK LIFE TO THIS URBAN WILDERNESS IN KNOXVILLE BY CREATING TRAILS, WATER SPORTS, AND ADDING SMALL KIOSKS TO THE SITE TO BRING PEOPLE IN TO THE SITE. BASE CAMP STRIVES TO EMPHASIZE THE HOT SPOT THAT MEADE’S USED TO BE TO KNOXVILLE AND BEGIN TO BRING BACK LIFE TO THE SITE.

USING THE TOPOGRAPHY OF IJAMS, BASE CAMP BEGINS TO CONTOUR TO THE FABRIC OF THE LAND. MANIPULATING THE SITE AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE, THE ROOF BEGINS TO FORM TO THE LAND AND FORM A SMOOTH FLOWING FORM THAT CREATES MOVEMENT ALONG THE SITE WITHOUT BARRING CIRCULATION OF THE TRAILS. THE MAIN BUILDING OF BASE CAMP CONSTRUCTS A SOFT BARRIER BETWEEN THE FIELD AND THE QUARRY. THE MASS NESTLES ITSELF SOFTLY INTO THE SOUTH FACING WALL, DIRECTLY OPPOSITE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT FACING WALL OF THE QUARRY THAT REACHES OVER A HUNDRED FEET FROM WATER LEVEL. IN THE MAIN BUILDING, A CAFE, EXHIBITION SPACE, AUDITORIUM, CLASSROOMS, AND A GREEN ROOF, CATER TO THE DESIRED ACTIVITIES THAT OCCUR AROUND THE SITE. ADJACENT TO THE MAIN BUILDING, LIES A RENTAL KIOSK WHERE GUEST CAN RENT KAYAKS, HIKING EQUIPMENT, SPORTS EQUIPMENT, AND RETAIL SPACE FOR PURCHASING ITEMS RELATED TO THE QUARRY. DISTANCING ITSELF FROM THE MAIN ACTION OF THE SITE, AN OVERNIGHT STAY LIES NESTLED INTO THE LAND FOLLOWING THE GUIDES OF THE TREE LINE. HERE GUEST CAN RENT A ROOM FOR HOWEVER LONG THEIR STAY MIGHT BE AND PARTICIPATE IN THE ACTIVITIES THAT BASE CAMP HAS TO OFFER.

“I looked upon the scene before me -- upon the mere house, and the simple landscape features of the domain -- upon the bleak walls -- upon the vacant eye-like windows -- upon a few rank sedges -- and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees -- with an utter depression of soul which I can compare to no earthly sensation more properly than to the after-dream of the reveller upon opium -- the bitter lapse into everyday life -- the hideous dropping off of the veil. There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart -- an unredeemed dreariness of thought which no goading of the imagination could torture into aught of the sublime. What was it -- I paused to think -- what was it that so unnerved me in the contemplation of the House of Usher?
