Carlthorp School Mission Statement Carlthorp School provides a strong academic foundation in a diverse and nurturing school community that emphasizes respectful values, responsible work habits, and excellence in order to prepare our students to achieve their highest potential in education and life.

Distance Learning Plan (DLP) Overview Carlthorp School is committed to providing a high-quality academic environment for all students. Last March, our school suspended in-person instruction due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Campus remained closed for the duration of the academic year. It was at this time that Carlthorp implemented an emergency remote learning program. At the year’s end, administration compiled data of teacher, student and family experiences to inform best practices for future distance learning plans. In the event of an extended campus closure, the School has developed the following blueprint based on community feedback to expedite a smooth transition to distance learning, ensuring the continued academic, social and emotional growth of our students.

The DLP provides a framework for class schedules and a list of digital and online resources Carlthorp will utilize to bolster the distance learning experience. The intent of this document is to communicate to parents what to anticipate should this occur during the 2020-2021 school year.

School Return Protocol/ COVID-19 Task Force In the state guidelines mandated by Governor Newsom, public and private schools are not permitted to resume in-person instruction until our county has been off the statewide monitoring list for more than 14 days. While Los Angeles County is currently on the monitoring list, and it is difficult to predict when the status may change, we still anticipate returning to campus at some point during the 2020-2021 school year. Our COVID-19 task force meets regularly to discuss the constantly changing climate and adjusts plans as needed to promote a safe return to campus for all faculty and students. We recognize the ideal teaching and learning environment is one in which students and teachers are able to interact with each other face-to-face. To ensure a return to campus with the health and safety of our students as our highest priority, we have implemented a variety of safeguards on campus should we be able to return to school. If an on campus program is not ideal for your family, a concurrent distance-learning program will be available to students when we return to campus.

Distance Learning Structure Our distance-learning plan closely mirrors the traditional school day by allowing students to connect through the Zoom online platform with teachers and classmates. The day will begin for all students with a virtual Flag Line meeting celebrating birthdays, making important school announcements and sharing the thought of the day. Homeroom classrooms will have daily meetings to check in with students. After morning announcements and activities, students will receive small group differentiated instruction in the core subject areas of reading, writing, and mathematics with passing periods and a recess break built into their morning schedule. Next, students will have a midday independent work session to complete class work and begin on homework, as well as have lunch recess. Students will then resume online instruction each afternoon in art, music, Spanish, science, PE, and library. All homeroom and specialty teachers will have office hours built into their daily schedules to offer support to students as needed. Carlthorp will also continue to offer virtual clubs and after school programs.

The School recognizes the importance of social-emotional learning and will prioritize human connections by creating opportunities for students to interact with their classmates and teachers in whole group and small group settings daily. Sensitive to extended screen time, our teachers will use approximately half of each learning block to explicitly teach, and the second half will be teacher-monitored independent work. Lower grades will have a shorter school day than upper grades to create an age-appropriate schedule.
