User Side

Connection speed This can affect a websites performance in many ways. If the connection speed is poor then this will have an effect on how people’s pages are loaded and how fast flash and java programmes run. In some cases the browser will time out. Browser choice The user’s browser can also have an effect on how the website performs. The affect they can have is that if the browser isn’t up to date then new web pages won’t load properly. Some browsers don’t like loading WebPages that have flash or java on them as they use quick time. For example safari do this when you try and watch a video on YouTube. Cache memory If the user hasn’t cleared there cache memory in a long time this can affect the computers speed really badly.

Hardware The user’s computer must have powerful hardware to run some software such as audio, images and video. It will also need to run java if your hardware is not up to date or powerful enough then the computer will be facing problems and may crash. Software If the user’s software is not update to date then they may face problems when browsing the internet. Having too much software can also slow down the computer. Certain software can also have an affect with over software if they are similar because they will counter act with each other.

Server Side

Internet traffic When you are on a website your not the only person viewing the site. There are many people on the site as the number of people increase viewing the site the connection may slow down and the page might operate at lot slower than normal or even time out this is were it kicks certain users off the website.

Hardware The server that is hosting the website needs to be powerful enough to handle a lot of users if it isn’t then it may slow down the speed that the website is running at. Some users may experience a shutdown from the servers this normally takes them to a time out page. File type/size If the file sizes are large on the website they might cause a lot of problems for the server and even the user. These problems may be that the server runs slow when people are downloading the file types due to there size. If they have a large file type if it is no compressed then this will also slow the server down. Software if software that the server is running is not programmed by someone who know how the professionally programmed then this can cause the server to run slower then it is capable of. This may cause crashes or just really bad connection this can cause a lot of problems for the users and the server its self.

Maintenance if the server is not maintained in the right manor then the software running on it might not be the most recent one and this will cause running systems again leading to bad connection and crashes. This software can also be bad when it comes to protecting it because it can allow virus into the server or even hackers.

Security

Security risks when you are hosting a website there are security protections that you have to take into account. The name one and most common is viruses. Viruses, worms, and Trojan horses are malicious programs that can cause damage to your computer and information on your computer, these can also slow down you computer and even damage your friends and family’s. Hackers can also gain entrance into your computer though a virus. From here they can gain access to any passwords that have been saved to your computer this can be anything from minor things like facebook and windows live hotmail to you internet banking. Hackers can also breach your computer by you using key loggers these are logins forms that they have copied off real sites and when you log in they have your passwords that you have saved to your computer.

Security protection mechanisms The e-commerce site will have to prevent hackers from gaining customers details from the database. The company will also have to install firewalls and anti viruses to again protect there machines. If the company do get breached then they will have to make sure they don’t realise any data so they won’t be breaching the data protection act. The e-commerce company will also need to have strong encrypted passwords. If another business gets into the system and they can de face the webpage and change details. To protect your system from key loggers all you need to do is not type in your login details to a site you don’t recognise as the site that you will be trying to log into will be slightly different and also don’t save passwords to you computer.
