ART WORKS PARTY AND AWARD CEREMONY JUNE 16, 8PM VISUAL – ALL WELCOME. Carlow Arts Festival and VISUAL Carlow present ART WORKS, the 37th annual open submission exhibition and art prize. Running for 10 days at VISUAL and Carlow College, in a quick burst, this exhibition celebrates the energy, creative power and diversity of visual arts practices in Ireland. It features work by artists selected from open submission as well as 5 invited artists; Stephen McKenna, Denis McNulty, Aideen Barry, Jaki Irvine and Brian Duggan. This year ART WORKS has been selected by Annie Fletcher, Senior Curator, Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven & Claire Feeley, Producer Barbican, London. The Éigse Prize of €3000 for an outstanding piece of work and the ART WORKS prize of €1000 for work by a recent graduate will be presented at the ART WORKS Party on June 16 at 8pm.

Little ART WORKS

Festival HQ , Meet at Gate Lodge Sat 1pm 3pm, Sun 2pm 4pm Ticket €5, booking required Clayotic will hosting children’s clay modelling workshops at Festival HQ on Saturday and Sunday using non-toxic, brightly coloured, non messy clay which air dries in 24 hours. Bring your creations home on the same day. Book early, places are limited.

SITE WORKS is an exciting new collaborative programming strand by Carlow Arts Festival, VISUAL Carlow and Carlow County Council Arts Office. For 2016 four temporary site specific art works have been selected for presentation over the festival period June 10 - 19. These interventions and one off events bring new contexts to the town’s sights, sounds and histories.

Building on the tradition of open calls for which the festival is known, the inaugural LIVE ART WORKS LIVE WORKS WORKS open call for performing arts professionals and has resulted in numerous works being presented that otherwise may not have been, at this ART WORKS year’s Carlow Arts Festival.

Town Tours

Carlow Historical Society Meet @ Gate Lodge, Carlow College 18/19 June @ 2pm Free In February 2016 an open call was made to artists inviting them to attend a walking tour of Carlow town. This event was arranged to give those interested in the SITE WORKS strand, information on Carlow, its history and notable features. For Festival 2016 Carlow Historical & Archaeological Society will once again provide walking tours of Carlow town, exploring the architectural, ecclesiastical and medieval heritage of the town.

Clodagh Emoe Next to Boat Club, Barrow River, Carlow Town Park June 10-19 June 10am- 8pm Crocosmia is a group of individuals that were formed through a weekly gardening group in Spirasi, Dublin in August 2015. Spirasi is a humanitarian, intercultural, non-governmental organisation that works with asylum seekers, refugees and other disadvantaged migrant groups. In a sound piece by the River Barrow, voices from Crocosmia will be audible as they list objects and situations that remind them of home. This project can also be encountered in the galleries at VISUAL Carlow. Clodagh Emoe holds a PhD titled Exploring the Philosophical Character of Contemporary Art through a Post-Conceptual Practice from NCAD.
