ICM Helpful Hints ICM Basic Learning Tools

Welcome to "Helpful Hints" This is a short version of a book containing Learning Tools for the photography technique called ICM. Icm is a photography technique existing since a long time, renewed by our new technology and it has clear and well defined characteristics put forth by Ernst Haas in the 1956's with his bull fight collection and some published essais later in the '70s. He is considered the father of ICM. Please check him out either in our Files (fb group) or on the web for more information on this highly recognized artist photographer. I thrive to produce pure icm work, as it was meant by Haas, alive and that means working on art production and on knowledge transmission. I hope this book will help you and guide you on the path of PURE ICM. In this book you will find:

ICM Helpful Hints 1. Introduction As the title says ICM is about creating “intentional” movements in our pictures. Hi, By intentional I mean we do it “on purpose” thus creating pictures where the subject appears to be somewhat distorted, elongated, twisted and transformed. The result is mesmerizing: colors are blending, streaks showing the flow of the movement, details become somewhat blended together and the result gives an impressionist and contemporary ambiance. This is done intentionally, and to do it right it takes a lot of practice. I cherish this approach to creating works of art (I said “creating” as I am in charge of making this happen) because it correspond to the artist that i am: lots of movements, joyful and playful, curious and for ever in love with life. It provides another point of view on the world, it lets me improvise my art and it allows me all the silliness I need to make my world a happy place! I have the pleasure of sharing with you some of the little mysteries of icming, at least the way I see it. Each one of us has a different approach so here is mine. I hope it can be useful to you, please feel free write to me, ask questions and join me on “ICM: Intentional Camera Movement” The Pure ICM group on Fb and simply enjoy the process! Thanks to my guests for providing me with their own examples of icm, i have the great pleasure to share admin duties with them on our fast growing community of icm artists and i am delighted to be teaming up with these fabulous ladies ;-) Artistically yours,

Carlotta Dongar

ICM Helpful Hints 2. Settings

Terminology i use: Speed (fast to slow)-Aperture (wide to small) -Iso (high to low), and triangulation for the whole process. I use camera mode: Manual (some use S as well), WB on auto or depending on the desired effect, slow speed (lower than 1/20), various aperture depending on the time of the shooting and mostly low iso because the slow speed brings in more light.

Please note that: A slow shutter speed only while the subject is in movement is not ICM! You need to moooove the camera to produce ICM! Speed: can be considered a major part in triangulation for ICM. The slower speed the more diffuse details you will get in concordance with the movement you will use. The slower movement the more details you will catch, with faster movements the details will be quite elongated and sharp in contrast but less defined creating an abstract feel to the subject. All that is of course in relations to Aperture and ISO. I personally work ICM at speeds lower than 1/20, very often around 1/2 to 1/8 and for specific subjects at much slower: from 1" to even slower. Each speed will get me different results and only practice made me able to make decisions according to the result i want. But! It also depends on if the subject is moving or not! And it depends on if you want to obtain a sharp point of focus or not. Decisions!!!! Aperture: depends on the environment, the speed and the desired effect. Remember that a wide apperture brings in more light, so your ISO may have to be adapted to the triangulation to bring in enough light but not too much as it 'burns' the film. I adapt my Aperture according to the amount of light/depth of field/colors and details i want to get 'in'. ISO: lower when in broad daylight, higher when more light is needed, remember that we are dealing with a process akin to long exposure type of photography. ISO largely depend on the first two parts of the triangulation and it's up to you to decide the desired effect. High key may require higher ISO while Low Hey may not like the extra light or may need a different source of light. Tripod or not? I prefer working hand held camera but some photographers like using a tripod. Of course you will need a real good one that can give you various directions. Filter or not? I usually don't even if i live in the Caribbeans where the amount of light is  incredible, i just adapt with my triangulation. As with slow shutter only type of photography you always will need to adapt your white balance, lower your ISO, close your aperture because the speed is quite slow.

ICM Helpful Hints 3. Movements

Horizontal to the left or to the right: holding the camera and ready to shoot, move the camera to the left or to the right, very useful for landscape icm photography:

Vertical: move the camera starting down or up and make your way towards the opposite direction; the steadier you are the better as the streaks will be vertical in either direction, it will provide wonderful effects:

Movements Zoom: using a zoom bring the length (or partial only) of the lens “in” or "out" Both effects are quite different in fact, the amount of light coming in is different so is the effect and the quality of the colors. You can also zoom-twist in either direction:

ICM Helpful Hints 6. High key and minimalism

ICM High key and minimalism These are my two favourite playgrounds either in ICM or regular photography. I consider them my breathers, my peaceful space and i worked both approaches in such a way that it becomes second nature to me. I usually spot elements that can be 'detatched' from the rest of the scene, a leaf, a lone sail boat, a group of people in the landscape etc. I 'isolate' them so to speak. Then i decide which movemement would be the best for what i see. My ISO will be high, my speed rather slow and my aperture will let a little more light that it would if not high key. My movement will go with the flow of what i look at. Shoot the subject while having the picture already existing in your mind. That's my only trick ;-)

ICM Helpful Hints 7. Abstract I love abstract where i cannot start to fantom what the actual subject originally was. It takes my imagination somewhere else and make me create possibilities. ICM is one of my ways of traveling deep into my imagination as creating is vital to me.

Abstract art is very close to my heart. I love when icm brings my imagination into a whimsical world, where my mind is free to wander at will. ICM is the right technique to achieve this. While abstract is by definition everything that is not a perfect representation of reality, ICM in itself is abstract. I take it one step further but you can make your icm abstract as representative as you want. Usually i love when icm transforms subjects in such a way that contrasts are high, sharp and well defined. My icm movements are quite brisk then, i totally disfigure totally the subject creating something that was not quite there before, and i love it!

ICM Helpful Hints 8. ICM Story telling

In art photography the 'story telling' aspect is considered the panacea of our activity. We can tell a story with one photograph or with a limited serie. Contrary to movies we have only one moment (or a few if a serie) to capture the imagination of the viewer, to tell her/him a story about our own interpretation of what is happening. These moments are usualy quite brief by definition, they immerse the viewer into a situation that enables her/him to be part of it, to participate in a way. With our icm technique we have the wonderful ability to go even further: transform these moments into abstract works of art that draw the onlooker deeper into the scene and into their own imagination making this a doubly satisfying experience. Carefully planned, an icm story board is like inhabiting the artist's mind for just a fleeting moment: magnificent! Planning is of the essence: it does not just happen. It is carefully designed as to incite an emotional response and a reaction (on both ends of the human reactions spectrum). It is always done with purpose and with our own reactions to the world so it is like surrendering part of who we are. The title has to be descriptive to a point: too less is not enough and too descriptive does not leave enough room for imagination. Decisions are always part of the deal: what to include or not, how the distance will affect the message, what angles are the best to trully describe our thoughts... Story telling is like a message in a bottle: discover it, read it and imagine the rest of it.

9. 'Dancing with...' Carlotta's way to icm! For those of you who are on our PURE ICM group you will remember the challenge i proposed in April 2020: ICM Dancing with kitchen tools"! i met with two of our dear members in Ottawa summer of 2019 and both members saw me in action doing my 'ICM dancing with' approach. I think they will remember that for quite some times!

Here's how it happened and why i am so fond of dancing my icm. A few years ago i was invited to a dance show. There was a solo dancer who performed in front of a crowd and of course i had my camera with me...I started to shoot icm while watching this delicate lady dance around a large room. I was so mesmerized by the dancer that i shot at will during the first few minutes and found myself moving along her, like i was accompanying her in her moves. And i loved it because i felt i was in time with her moves and the music and i thought "This is icm for me: rythm and freedom of mouvement! I loved this idea so much that for the rest of the show i just icmed her while i was dancing with her. Here's part of the result of the shooting. Needless to say that this is my signature move and i come to life each time i create my pictures "ICM Dancing with...".

ICM Helpful Hints 10. Multiple exposures Please note that #6 is not allowed on The Pure icm Group.

Multiple exposures WITH icm: two ways to achieve this, 1. Take one “normal” shot then the next one is icm, or 2. Take an icm shot and the second one is “normal”. If you have the possibility with your camera to do more multi-x (exposures) just go right ahead and enjoy the process!

ICM Helpful Hints 11. Composition

Composition: for this one there is no magic: read, get info on the net or in art books and graphic design books, practice and practice! Make sure you eyes fall on your focus point first, observe it, make decisions and shoot icm! The only quick magic trick I can share with you is the “Golden ratio rule” (which is to be broken at all costs IF and only if the effect is specially convincing). You have to have it in your mind before you shoot and move the camera accordingly to what you want to get. The golden ratio works in the four directions. Think of it as a snail shell that has a focus point and go outward towards less important details, or vice versa.
