ABOUT me

During my time as a student I have realized how important it is to be open and versatile, in order to learn and explore as much as possible. I truly believe that the simplest things can provide biggest inspiration.Last year, in June 2014, I finished my BA in Fashion Design in Portugal. During this course I had the opportunity to understand how design really works, not only in fashion, but in any form. The focus of the course was on digital techniques, allowing me to develop skills in graphic design and become confident using a range of software. Upon graduation, in order to expand my knowledge of the business and marketing side of the fashion industry, I began a yearlong course at the CondĂŠ Nast College of Fashion & Design. Brand development is a key theme of the course, which also placed strong emphasis on industry-standard visual communication. For my final project I developed a brand identity for my own fashion label, using my BA graduate collection This introduction to branding has encouraged me to learn more. I found myself deeply interested in the relationship and connection of brands and its audience. The concept of communication, what it represents and how transmits a specific concept fascinated me. I always try to bring my identity and personal response to any project. By using my creative individuality in every project I always try to develop particular concepts with a very innovative and different perspective to catch the audience in a fresh unique way.

UNAESTHETIC

FASHION BRAND DEVELOPMENT The focus of my individual final project at CondĂŠ Nast College was Fashion Brand Communication. I created a brand using my own graduate collection (project 5). with the aim of launching a new fashion label in Portugal at some time in the future. The brand is characterised by a conceptual and mysterious aesthetic, conveyed through the styling, photography, graphics, website and promotional material that combine to form the project outcome.


UNAESTHETIC BRAND IDENTITY // PRODUCT UNAESTHETIC is a clothing brand that represents not only fashion, but a source of Art and Personality. The brand intends to create a unique concept, making the customers see Fashion with a different perspective and as a way of being. UNAESTHETIC products are thought to have an unusual style, focused mainly in details. They have a clean design which becomes somewhat heavy with the use of attachments and patchworks. The colours used are sober and black can be regarded as the powerful colour of the brand. UNAESTHETIC garments are characterized by a clear contrast between the use of strong materials and smooth ones, showing the contrast between the heavy and the innocent sides of the woman. The pricing strategy is aligned with the customer profile and the Portuguese market and it is ranged from 100 to 300â‚Ź. Taking into account the quality of the materials used, it is conceivable to say there is a fair relation between price and quality. UNAESTHETIC biggest concerns are design and finishings.


UNAESTHETIC // TARGET CUSTOMER UNAESTHETIC core target are urban women, aged from 20 to 35 years old, with high education level and medium to high income, in what refers to the Portuguese market. These women have a gloomy and strong personality, hidden by a certain innocence. They appreciate freedom and a lifestyle fulfilled with cultural and intellectual events. They love art, specially music and dance, so they usually attend music concerts, art exhibitions and dance shows. These women really appreciate what is new and unusual but, at the same time, they want to be discreet, opting always for sober colours. They care about the products design as well as the quality of its finishings and materials and they prefer non-massive products. UNAESTHETIC customers do not care about brand recognition, they just want to be themselves.They value the uniqueness of the product.


UNAESTHETIC ETHOS //PROMOTION UNAESTHETIC is a new brand, completely unknown in Portugal. In order to increase the brand awareness and consequently increment sales, I will also focus my project on building a strong promotion strategy, in terms of image and communication. Taking into account the brand ethos, which is related to Dance and Music, the main goal of this strategy will be the development of partnerships with new dance companies and competitions and up coming Rock bands. In this way, UNAESTHETIC website will have a dedicated area where all the contents and schedules related to each company will be shared, improving the customer engagement with the Art movement and the brand. It will also allow the customers to buy the shows’ tickets online. The brand will also have a partnership with the new Portuguese shoes brand DROPP, allowing the customers to go directly to UNAESTHETIC website through the DROPP one, and also the opposite.This strategy will differentiate the brand from the remain competitors, allowing the improvement of brand loyalty and engagement, increasing traffic for the website. It will be a win-win situation for all of the parts, as the majority of the new companies are unable to invest a huge amount in promotion.

UNAESTHETIC shoots intend to show all the concept and the aesthetic of the brand. In this way, the shoots are conceptual and focused mainly in details. The main idea of all the shooting is to transmit a strong feeling of mystery to the audience , making the costumers be curious and, at the same time, passionate about the brand. The choice of editing all the shooting in black and white fits the brand aesthetic. The retouching was really light, in order to make the shoots look natural. In this way, I selected both of these shoots because I believe they can strongly represent the brand aesthetic. In terms of communicating the brand image, I truly believe these shoots are the strongest ones, once they show detail and personality, at the same time.

UNAESTHETIC values are related to freedom, personality, movement, performance and contrast. In this way, when I did the shooting I took into account all the backgrounds and props used, in order to get the best setting. In these shoots I decided to play with different props. On the one above I aimed to create a mysterious but, at the same time funny atmosphere, with the using of bubbles. On the one at the bottom I aimed to create a mysterious and simbolic atmosphere, reminding me to performance and stage. Taking into account all the consistency of the shooting, I decided to use the shoot with the water instead of the one with the bubbles, once I believe the first one reflects better the brand identity.


HOW TO COMMUNICATE BRAND IDENTITY // FINAL RESULT

STHETIC UN AEESTHETIC The name UNAESTHETIC came from the idea of something with no aesthetic, with this I mean, a brand with a different concept of Fashion. In this way, the contrast and reflexion are the most important values of the brand so the logo has to reflect them. The final result, the logo at the bottom, was the selected one, once it shows the contrast of the brand through the colours and the sober line, which was used to enforce the meaning of the word. To get the idea of reflection, I decided to reflect one of the “E’s” of the logo. In this way, this reflexion shows the contrast visible in both brand name and aesthetic. The colours used are sober as it happens with the garments and shoots.


After several trials, I decided that this label was the strongest one in terms of communicating the brand image. The shoot has a strong meaning and when reflected it shows once again one of the brand values, reflection. I also think that having the brand words as a first layer of the label is deeply important, once it enforces the brand values to the customer. The idea of using two layers with transparent paper reminds of UNAESTHETIC designs and textiles.


PROMOTIONAL BOOKLET

STHETIC UN AEESTHETIC

A cover is a crucial point of a promotional booklet. It has to attract the audience and make them feel curious about what is inside and, specially, about the brand. In this way, I aimed to create a really clean but strong cover. As I mentioned before, one strong image can say more than 1000 words. In this case, I tried to communicate all the essence of the brand with this shoot. The white frame around the picture intends to work as a polaroid photography, taking into account the authenticity and personality of the brand. The assymetric frame in dashed line around the model’s face enforces all the brand concept and reminds of pattern cutting, taking into account the brand absession for details. Once again, the colours used are sober and show harmony throughout the layout.

This promotional booklet intended to be more conceptual than commercial. In this way, I aimed to enforce all the brand aesthetic and concept with the use of several words with a strong meaning for the brand. In terms of graphics, I played a lot with lines and layers, taking into account the brand mood. The main idea of this booklet is to transmit a strong feeling of mystery to the audience , making the costumers be curious and at the same time passionate about the brand, engaging with UNAESTHETIC through its website and social media.

The first page is a crucial point of a website. It is the first impact of the brand to the customer before going into the platform. In this way, I aimed to create a strong and intuitive page, taking into account once again the brand aesthetic. I selected this image in order to enforce the values of freedom and movement visible in the brand. To have consistency, all the layout style, colours and font used were the same as before.

Once again, UNAESTHETIC website intended to be more conceptual than commercial. In this way, I tried to make the platform look profissional and clean at the same time, allowing a better engagement between the brand and the customer. The shoots created were used to show the brand aesthetic and also the several looks, allowing the customer to buy the garments after seeing the commercial lookbook. UNAESTHETIC Community was created to enforce the brand connection with both Dance and Music movements, which differentiates the brand from the remain competitors and allows the improvement of brand loyalty. All the platform strengthens the UNAESTHETIC strong concept trought a clean and consistent design and harmonious colours.

the best way to improve the brand recognition and, in this way, to increment sales would be a creation of a conceptual website, working as an online Trunk Show two weeks per year. The online platform would also have a dedicated content area, which would be related to the brand ethos and identity, increasing traffic for the website and making the customers see J.JSLEE as an unique brand. In consonance with this report, it was found that J.JS LEE is not a very recognized brand in what refers to the UK. More than half of the people who were interviewed never heard about the brand. According to both primary and secondary research, it can be conclude that the brand do not have in hand a strong strategy in terms of promotion, not even a good online presence. Thus, in agreement with the majority, social media would be the best way to improve the brand and consequently to increment sales, always taking into account its exclusivity. As it could be seen, in line with the questionnaire responses, J.JS LEE presents an interesting and somewhat curious identity and a large number of people showed a huge enthusiasm in what refers to purchase the product, specially the younger ones. Nonetheless, its products cannot be acquired by everyone due to their high prices, even if they were considered reasonable for a new brand.

Confirming to all the research reported previously, the target customer can be found. This essay concludes that J.JS LEE core target are urban women, aged from 30 to 50 years old, with high education level and high income. These women who have a particular and strong personality, appreciate a lifestyle fulfilled with cultural and intellectual events. They love Art and Design. They attend music concerts, art exhibitions and fashion shows. These women really appreciate Fashion and what is new and unusual. They care about the product’s design as well as the quality of its finishings and materials and they prefer non-massive products. J.JS LEE clients do not care about the brand’s recognition. They just want to be themselves. These women wear ACNE but also another new brands because they like to support new talents. In conclusion, J.JS LEE customers value the uniqueness of the product.

MARKETING & BUSSINESS // FASHION BRAND COMMUNICATION Taking into account a previous market research and business model, this project aimed to create a conceptual website for DROPP shoes brand, sharing a dedicated content area. The main goal of this promotion strategy were the improvement of the brand awareness and its loyalty, allowing a better engagement between the brand and its customers. DROPP is a Portuguese shoes brand characterised by an unusual and daring style, conveyed through the styling, photography, graphics and website that combine to form the project outcome.

SELF-REFLECTION FASHION EDITORIAL STYLING // CONCEPT CREATION

For this academic project me and my colleague were challenged to create a strong styling concept based on classic shoots, to be covered on LOVE Magazine. The styling for this shooting was based on a young and angelical girl, who shows a mysterious attitude and, at the same time, a wild personality. All the objects were used to enforce the concept. The mirror represents the idea of self-reflection and it enforces the contrast of both personalities of the girl. Glommy Innocence represents my own graduate collection, used also for my final project at CondĂŠ Nast College(project 1). For this academic project I created a collection based on my styling and identity.
