Spanish National Statistics Institute Address Paseo de la Castellana 183 28071 Madrid Spain http://www.ine.es/

.

The Spanish National Statistics Institute is located in Paseo de la Castellana, Madrid, near Plaza de Castilla. It was recently renewed by architect César Ruíz-Larrea. The original structure was built in 1973, but what is now only visibile is the fresh new façade, composed of hundreds of coloured panels, which represent the statistics itself. This curious façade is called 'Diafragma Decafónico de Dígitos' and is an artwork by sculptor Pepe Cruz Novillo. It is a transcription system that transforms colours into numbers (0-9). The equivalents for the colours and numbers are: 1 Red, 2 Orange, 3 Green, 4 Rose, 5 Yellow, 6 Dark Green, 7 Violet, 8 Blue, 9 Light Blue and 0 Brown. The 001 panel line for example symbolizes the Spanish area in square kilometres: 504.645. The 002 is Spain's population: 44.108.523, and so on.

Puerta de Europa Address Plaza de Castilla 28046 Madrid Spain

.

These two office towers flank the Paseo de la Castellana, Madrid's most important boulevard. The location of a subway interchange made the placement of the two towers near the street impossible. Their bold design is in part a response to the need for the footprints of the towers to be set back from the interchange while at the same time bringing the towers together as a single compositional whole. The towers lean towards each other and over the plazas, ensuring their visibility from up and down the Paseo and creating a portal which, being at the Northern end of the business district of Madrid, has been called a metaphorical gateway to Europe. The faรงade of each tower is a composition of a major grid -clad in stainless steel conforming to their structure-, a minor grid of red mullions, and a third grid comprising the light grey mullions of the curtain wall (text from website architect).

Celosia Address Calle de Isabel Clara Eugenia 28050 Madrid Spain

.

Edificio Celosia means Lattice building. This social housing project is an alternative solution to the closed block. The proposal aspires to be a construction system rather than a unique building. The block, in the form of lattice, mixes 30 constructed boxes and 30 empty spaces. Those empty spaces are for intermediate neighbourhood life. The volumes contain homes of 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms and the vertical courtyards are common spaces open to crossed perspectives in all directions. The birds, wind and the sun cut through the building. The mold building system tests the effectiveness and quality of a faster and more sustainable construction. (text from website Blanca Lleo)

El Mirador de Sanchinarro Address Calle Princesa de Éboli 21 28050 Madrid Spain

.

This 22 level building, called Mirador, is located in Sanchinarro, a residential suburb on the north east edge of Madrid surrounded by highways and with views towards the Guadarrama Mountains. The most impressive element of the building is the incredible gap of it shape, which acts as a frame for the distant landscape. The large communal plaza and lookout at 40 m above the ground is meant to be used by the neighborhood as a meeting area and playground. The Mirador contains a wide variety of compact housing types, in total 156 units. The architects created a distinctive silhouette by grouping nine blocks. The articulation of these blocks is apparent in the exterior palette, equal parts stone, concrete and tile. The strips of red indicate the corridors. The way the nine blocks are stacked and glued together, they make up a new towering impressive 'superblock' (MVRDV). Blanca Lleó asociados from Madrid were responsible for directing the works.

170 social houses in Sanchinarro Address Calle de Princesa de Éboli 1 28050 Madrid Spain

.

This housing block contains 170 social houses, built in the new urban expansion area of Madrid: Sanchinarro. The block is not entirely closed, it is open on the south side, where the lighter inner façade is visible. This way, the inner courtyard is related to the street. The houses are entered from the inner courtyard, and the façade here is more 'domestic', while the exterior refers to the urban scale of the surroundings. The block has a higher part on one side, to provide orientation and a recognisable landmark on one corner.

Panorama building Address Calle de Dulce Chacón Madrid Spain

.

To keep a maximum of 'garden space' available on ground floor, the architects decided to built a high housing-tower next to 2 low-rise blocks that border the 11.000m2 of garden. The Panorama building has been awarded with the Urbanism, Architecture and Public Work prize that the City Hall of Madrid awards every year. Panorama is located in the Isla Chamartín, next to the enlargement of Paseo de la Castellana and the spectacular skyscrapers that rise over the Ciudad Deportiva of Real Madrid. An area conceived to become, in the short run, the financial centre of Madrid.

Torre Caja Repsol Tower Address Paseo Castellana 278,280 28046 Madrid Spain

.

Torre Caja Madrid (Spanish for Caja Madrid Tower) is a skyscraper located in the Cuatro Torres Business Area in Madrid, Spain. With a height of 250 m and 45 floors, it will be the tallest of the four buildings in the complex, just 89 cm above the Torre de Cristal. Designed by Lord Norman Foster, it was first known as Torre Repsol and would have served as headquarters for Repsol YPF oil and gas company. During the construction of the tower, Repsol decided to change the location of its future headquarters and the financial institution Caja Madrid purchased the building for 815 million Euro in August 2007 .

The Torre Espacio (Spanish for Space Tower) is a skyscraper in Madrid, Spain. The skyscraper is 236 metres (774 feet) tall and has 57 floors. In November 2006, its structure surpassed the height of the Gran Hotel Bali, thus becoming the tallest building in Spain, although it has retained this title only for a short time (see below). The structure was topped out on March 19, 2007. On the night of that day, Alberto Ruiz Gallard贸n, mayor of Madrid, attended a ceremony with fireworks to commemorate the event. With its 236 m, it also was the tallest structure in Spain, surpassing the telecommunications tower Torrespa帽a. However, Torre Caja (Repsol Tower), one of the neighbouring skyscrapers just finished in the Cuatro Torres Business Area, surpassed the height of Torre Espacio in April 2007. The building project was featured on the Discovery Channel's Build It Bigger series due to the skyscraper's unique form and shape. It was designed by Pei Cobb Freed.

This project is the result of a competition at the end of 2003. The philosophy of the competition was that each team would offer the best architecture solution that was able to imagine, subject to compliance with the ‘economic’ parameters for the lot; maximum surface to be built and number of dwellings, and always considering that it is a social housing development. The 22-storey building has two towers of different heights and it consists of 132 one and two bedrooms housing units. Above ground, the building occupies 70% of the limit set by the alignment of the façades, with a general setback to liberate more public space on the front sidewalk access and natural relief of ground floor commercial use. This setback can avoid the typical chamfers of the area planning and work with sharper volume geometry. The building is clad in zinc tiles and windows are scattered across the surface so that the boundaries of individual dwellings are hidden from the outside.

12 towers in Vallecas Address Av. del Mayorazgo 28031 Madrid Spain

.

As opposed to the great operations of the periphery, we recovered the scale and the density of the historical center. How many vestibules you cross in 10 minutes walking by the PAU of Ensanche de Vallecas, as opposed to which you cross in the same time in the historical center of Madrid?. Perhaps 5 as opposed to 50. A block, halfway between the periphery and the historical city. We are interested on the fragmentation and the compactness, two terms in principle opposed but compatible. A compact project formed by different fragments: a closed block that is diluted in small towers. A project that is looking for its position as it changes of level, the fragmentation of the ground floor, to the compactness of the plants first and second, dissolving in independent pieces in the superior plants. We engage in a dialog between two systems, the group and the individual thing. Between the collective and massive system of the first plants, and the towers: almost single houses.

Eco Boulevard Address Bulevar de la naturaleza 1 28031 Madrid Spain

This is a series of sustainable public spaces, a meeting point for those who live in the area of Vallecas, a suburb of Madrid. It is on a 500 x 50 m road, a pilot experience for the climatic adaptation of outdoor spaces, awarded in 2004 at the Eco-Boulevard competition organized by the Residential Innovation management office within the Municipal Housing Corporation of Madrid and funded by the European Union (LIFE programme). The tree of air is a light structure that is self-sufficient and can be dismantled. It consumes only what it can produce through photovoltaic solar energy collection systems. Selling this energy to the power network generates a superavit on the annual balance sheet and this is reinvested in the maintenance of the structure. “Three Pavilions, or air-trees, work as supports, open to multiple activities chosen by the users. Installed in the non-city as temporary prostheses, they will be used only until the inactivity and climatic adaptation problem is corrected.”

Day Centre for Alzheimer Patients Address Calle Valderrebollo 5 28031 Madrid Spain

Windows are of great importance in the design of hospitals and nursing homes, because sick people and the elderly spend most of their time indoors. The trick is to use façade openings and outdoor spaces to open up a building without diminishing the sense of protection and safety. This, along with the logistical organization and the client's desire for flexibility and an energy-efficient building, were the determining factors in Lamela architects' design of an Alzheimer Day Care Centre in Madrid. The complex, which was built in phases, comprises nine low horizontal residential blocks that fit in with the green suburban surroundings. Each block encloses a sunny courtyard that acts as an extension of the interior thanks to the horizontal fenestration. The blocks are all equipped with solar panels which, together with the highly insulated façades, windows and natural ventilation system, deliver the desired energy efficiency.

Olympic Tennis Stadium Address Calle Camino de Perales Madrid Spain http://www.madrid-open.com

This Olympic Tennis Centre, La Caja Mágica, or the Magic Box, is a big, clear luminous box that seems to have no walls at night, revealing its interiors, its colours and the geometry of its forms. The complex features three main courts with retractable roofs, all in the same arena. Perrault's proposal won an international competition held in 2002 by Ayuntamiento of Madrid. Construction work began in 2003 and is expected to last 32 months, completing the structure in 2007. Its outstanding feature is its simple, linear forms. The big box, called "magic" for its light and colour effects and for its "content" of spectacular events and initiatives, is prevalently made of glass, steel and wood. This skin is reflective in daylight, while improving the stadium's visibility at night by lighting up the entire structure so that it can be seen from far away.

Sitting on a patch of high ground, the 'Biblioteca publica Jose Hierro' could be described as a castle for the safe keeping of books and other information. Upon entering, the first thing one encounters is a dramatic triple height entrance space, followed by the discovery that the the ground floor plan is actually quite extensive, and is not confined to the footprint of the tower above. A good way to experience the building is to take the lift up to the top floor and then walk back down the stairs. The plan of the tower is divided in a two-thirds/one-third split. There are several double height spaces occupying the larger portion, with mezzanine galleries - holding the toilets and quiet study rooms forming the smaller part of the plan. Tall slit windows, arranged in an apparently random fashion, allow in natural light. The interior walls are covered in abstracted text in different colours. Structure is confined to the core and perimeter to leave a largely column-free interior.

This scheme for 102 units by Dosmasuno Architects, has two distinct sides. It comprises of two blocks (forming an 'L-shape'), occupying two sides of a rectangular site on the Avenida de la Peseta, following two of the site's boundaries. The southern block is the shortest. On the outer face, the elevations are formed by white polyester coated panels of expanded metal, spanning vertically from floor to ceiling. Some panels are fixed, whilst others slide to one side or the other. Thus the occupiers of the apartments are capable of creating random variations in the elevation. On the inner face of the scheme, large boxes are cantilevered off the sides of the elevation to provide accommodation beyond the building line. These spaces are arranged in an apparently casual, un-ordered fashion. Whilst the accommodation hugs the sides of the site, virtually the whole of the ground floor is given over to parking. However this has been roofed over to provide a useful amenity for the occupants.

Foreign Office Architects gave bamboo a leading role in their latest housing scheme in Spain. There were two main reasons for doing so: it's eco-friendly and it's comfortingly cosy. Bamboo louvres mounted on folding frames cover the faรงades of the building in Madrid's Carabanchel public housing development in the city's southern suburbs. The basic parallelogram block contains units of different shapes and sizes which, thanks to their tube-like interior, all have a dual east-west orientation as well as access to a private garden on the eastern side. The louvres not only provide the necessary protection from the blazing summer sun, but also enhance security and, because they are completely under the control of each unit's occupants, they also highlight the latter's spatial independence.

With the guarantee that the person inhabiting this urban landscape prefer the difference to the uniformity, the architects continue research on issues such as translucent glass sliding elements, different degrees of transparency, the effect of viewpoint between two front skins, the combination of glass and metal walls. They understood that unless they raise a deeper review of programs and ways of life, research should focus on the search for the 'coating' to provide more attributes. In this steep plot, they proposed the location of the building in the northern edge of the solar so that the green surface is protected from the wind by the building itself. One could speak of two parallel tablets in which all houses are grouped around three vertical cores. To the north façade, the planes of glass are sliding on the three lanes located directly on concrete slabs and they are protected from rain and wind by the back wall. In the south, the glass panel is replaced by an expanded metal.

This is a renovated square in the historical centre. A large central space, a perfect setting for urban life; a multi functional, indeterminate and free. Steps accommodate and apply geometrical order to the trees and architectural elements such as ramps, stairs and ventilation towers, made out of naturally rusted corten steel, either punched or stamped with a floral motif. In the lowest point of the square a water fountain that doubles as a game for children provides a refreshing counter point and at the other end in the highest point of the square, a child’s play area was placed close to an area where seniors can exercise in the shade. The vegetation was doubled, large chestnut trees greatly changed the overall appearance. New lighting was installed that provided a higher level of illumination under the arcades making them safer at night and more adequate for all kinds of activities. Granite paving with different contrasted colours allows for a clear lecture of the topography.

Museo del Traje Address Avenida de Juan de Herrera 2 28040 Madrid Spain http://museodeltraje.mcu.es/

.

Its basic aim of this museum is to promote an understanding of the historical development of costume and testify to the ethnological heritage representative of the different cultures of the peoples of Spain. The building was built between 1971 and 1973 and inaugurated in 1975 as the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art. The architects, Jaime López de Asiaín and Angel Diaz Domínguez, followed the specifications of the 1968 Congress of Museum Architecture in its design. Conceived from the outset as a museum, this building is ideally suited to this function because of its purpose-built interior, the ease of its flow and the clean flexible lines of its design. Recent renovations have updated some of its services and facilities to bring them into line with current technology and have also restored the original open-plan structure of the lower floors, recreating their relationship with the surrounding gardens and their exceptional views.

Puerta America Hotel Address Avenida de América 41 28002 Madrid Spain www.hotelpuertamerica.com/

.

"Nineteen of the world's best architects create the hotel of the future in Madrid" according to the hotel's own website. As president of the Silken Hotel Group (a business venture by the companies Escampa and the Hotel Group Urvasco S.A) explained: “the Hotel Puerta America is a dream come true. A project where acclaimed architects and designers have conveyed their dreams to us. It is a homage to the world of architecture, design and to the freedom”. Each of the hotel's 12 floors bears the imprint of a different design talent. Each floor measures 1300 m2 and the only constraint was that each had to contain 28 rooms and two junior suites. The external structure was developed by SGA Studio and is a fairly standard rectangular tower block. John Pawson did the common areas, while Jean Nouvel designed the cladding on the facade and the 12th floor with 12 luxurious suites (as an exception on the 28-room-rule). For the others ... go see by yourself.

Airport Barajas Address M-110 1 28042 Madrid Spain http://www.madrid-mad.com/

.

Madrid Barajas Airport (MAD) is Spain's busiest airport and was doubled with the Richard Rogers addition of the new Terminal 4 and two extra runways. Consisting of a main building (T4) and satellite building (T4S), which are separated by approximately 2.5 km, the new terminal is meant to give passengers a stress-free start to their journey. This is managed through careful use of illumination, available by glass panes instead of walls and numerous domes in the roof for natural light to pass through. Expressive air conditioning outlets resembling giant bar code readers animate the baggage collection stands. It won the 2006 Stirling Prize. Judges commented: "The elegant over-sailing roof is a unifying device and succeeds in being both dominant and yet calmly and self-assuredly understated. The sinuous, lightweight consistency of the bamboo slatted lining contrasts with the modular repetition of the gymnastic steel roof structure that in turn is supported off a monumental concrete frame."

Matadero Madrid Address Paseo de la Chopera 14 28045 Madrid Spain http://mataderomadrid.com/v2/

.

Matadero Madrid is an ongoing project of new spaces for artistic creation that doesn't fit into traditional spaces; comparable to 'Palais de Tokyo' in Paris and 'PS 16' in New York. Started in 2006, the expected completion of the renovation of this former slaughterhouse Arganzuela is 2011. The project serves as an opportunity to explore renovation possibilities, reducing the intervention to a necessary minimum but with maximum expressivity. No clean cuts, but raw joints and as simple as possible. Materials come straight from the industrialization, unchanged and in standard measurements; eventually ready for reuse.

Bridges Cascara Madrid RIO Address Av del Manzanares 28026 Madrid Spain

.

West 8, working together with MRIO, designed the master plan for the reclaimed riverbanks and the new urban area above the tunnels of the M30 highway in Madrid. Parque de la Arganzuela and the Salon de Pinos are connected by two slow traffic bridges, the Puentes Cascara. In contrary to usually technical and pragmatic pedestrian infrastructural bridges they create a place where the river is really experienced. They are designed as a massive concrete dome with a rough texture. The bridges have the scale of park elements and not of the infrastructure. More than one hundred cables resembling whale baleens wearing the slim steel deck. The fine detailing becomes visible when entering the bridge. The ceilings have a mosaic of the Spanish artist Daniel Canogar. In the edge of the ceiling the lighting is included which illuminates the artwork and the deck by reflection.

photo: Paul Klõceiko

In 2005 a consortium of three Madrilean and one Dutch office came up with the winning proposal for the M30 project. Their design called for the tunnelling of 6 kilometres of highway alongside the Manzanares river in Madrid. On top of this, a large park connecting the north to the south of Madrid was placed. The removal of the busy highway created a quiet atmosphere that had not been there before. A total of 47 sub-projects have since been developed in the 6 years that the work was carried out. Along this corridor all sorts of installations were placed. The first opened in 2007 and everything was completed by 2011. The park features an urban beach of 11930m², of which 6500 are relaxing areas protected by around new 300 trees. There are 5 playgrounds, a 4300m² platform for cultural events, and a new municipal police station.

Arganzuela Footbridge Address Paseo de las Yeserias 28045 Madrid Spain

.

Designed to link the neighbourhoods on the right and left banks of the river, the Arganzuela Footbridge will be the longest of all the bridges to be built. The bridge will be for both pedestrians and cyclists. The footbridge enables people to cross from one side of the park to the other while also providing direct access to the park below. Cone like in structure, the bridge has two interlocking metal spirals, wrapped by a metallic ribbon. Spaced wooden slats make up the floor of the bridge, allowing the rays of the sun to penetrate through to the park below. The cones' geographic location creates a belvedere over the park and the surrounding city as well as an exceptional location from which it will be possible to admire the famous Toledo Bridge. Shaded during the day, the promenade becomes luminous at night.

.

The library's footprint, height, and volume closely resembles that of the building that was located here previously (and demolished in 2002, after intense debate), the house of the knight Iván de Vargas. The building features two courtyards (one interior one, one open towards the front of the building), which are in the same location as two courtyards in the previous building. The library has the following services: a periodical room, a children and youth section, a loan service, a reading room, group study rooms, and a study room with independent access. The latter provision is intended to respond to the growing demand for these services by students, without disturbing other users of the library.

Caixa Forum Madrid is a cultural centre, offering two floors of exhibition space, a restaurant, an auditorium and an excellent bookshop. The structure is a conversion of a former power station and is located in the cultural heart of Madrid, near some of Spain's most important museums. The visual image of the Forum is determined by the two façades facing the Paseo del Prado. One of these is covered by green plants, creating a vertical garden. The other façade consists of a Cor-ten steel addition, built on top of the existing brick complex.

Museo Thyssen Bornemisza Address Paseo del Prado 8 28014 madrid Spain http://www.museothyssen.org

.

The third of Madrid 's cultural institutions, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum will double in size to accommodate the nine-year loan of more than 700 masterpieces from the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. The extension also calls for the renovation of two late 19 th century buildings adjoining the Villahermosa Palace by BOPBAA Studio, a group of Barcelona architects. Their design incorporates these 2 adjacent existing structures – retaining their facades – and links them to the museum with a new glass pavilion facing a garden terrace. A new entrance court is created which also houses the museum café: an astonishingly spacious interior. Madrid 's two other world class cultural institutions: the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía had extensive expansions also. The 3 museums – all housed in 18 th century secular buildings – were built as part of Carlos III's campaign to transform the modest town of Madrid into the country's modern capital.

This is a monumental tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks on March 11th, 2004. It consists out of 2 parts, intimately related: the glass cupola and the room underneath it. From this room, visitors can watch the inside of the cupola, where messages are visible, printed on the glass. These messages were written in the successive days after the bombing. The 11 m high glass cupola is formed by 2 different layers: transparent colourless glass blocks and an ETFE membrane. The blocks are glued together with acrylic glue that hardens when exposed to ultraviolet light. The glue is still transparent, but the ETFE foil contains a 97% transparency, subject to change, according to the pressure within the room. The messages will be seen through the glass skin during the day, and appear different during the night. The room is accessed directly from the main lobby of the station of Atocha. The blue coloured space is like “an empty space, in silence, with the light as a protagonist.
