Office, Hotel & Residential Complex

SCI-Arc’s M.DesR ESTm

Course:

Studio Project, Fall 2014

Tutor: Marcelo Spina Size: 1’200,000 Sq Ft Typology: Office, Hotel, Residential Location:

Downtown Los Angeles, EE.UU. 90° Axonometric Sheared Elevation

Y&Z Fuzzy Facets engages the issue of defamiliarization. The mixed use building complex, located on the site of the World Trade Center building in Downtown Los Angeles, utilizes the plinth of the old building as a socially, culturally and geometrically familiar object on top of which it sits and rises as a new whole object composed by high-rise towers that resist geometrical description.

6

1 Point Perspective Elevation The new building achieves an object condition and reaches the double lecture condition stated by Object Oriented Ontology authors such as Graham Harman in Weird Realism. First, an allusive technique is used in the massing exercise. Volumes are carved in order to achieve fuzziness and uncertainty in the mass, which nevertheless, enables it to transmit the notion of general outline enticing some familiarity. On a second instance, a more cubist technique is used to break down the several parts of the object. The towers acquire texture by using a projection technique. An occlusion image of their own mass is projected orthographically in both Y and Z axis in order to elucidate the variety of conditions and gaps produced when applied onto its irregular facets. Texture becomes instrumental rather than ornamental, by being produced by actual architectural objects on their own, such as curtain walls windows, which reminisce to Mies van der Rohe in the Chicago Federal Center, or to Phillip Johnson in Pennzoil Place, as well as verandas, which reminisce to Le Corbusier in the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts.

Basic Blocks Assemblage Pattern

Monolithic Assemblies Translation

The project speculates about the generative role of the image in the creation of objects. It acknowledges potential qualities inherent to images, both perceived or withdrawn, coexisting in an unresolved tension within a framework of a speculative reality. An image of an object having actual object qualities or being an object in itself is a matter addressed in the project, by exploring the potential of image processing techniques when confronted with real geometric generative processes.

Hoax Assemblies

Image / Object Transcripts These series of drawings address this representational paradox behaving to some extent in a similar fashion as Bernard Tschumi’s ‘Manhattan Transcripts’. The first column describes different elements coexisting in the object. The second and third column highlight the unresolved tension between specific elements. The fourth column portrays that unresolved tension existing in the whole object.

12

Assemblies Transcripts

A series of rendering iterations of monolithic object assemblies are utilized to inform the project, producing a representational paradox in which both image and object coexist physically but in tension, resulting in a recursively eroding process and an even more indeterminate mass. Deliberately altered assembly conditions, through representation, drive predefined parts of the processed images to behave as entropic entities, hence portraying intricate misreadings and conforming new vague wholes.
