A story of overcoming: Maria Paz, a girl who is living a dream… By @valeurtubia & @daniprado

Maria Paz Diaz Obregón was born in Constitución in 1989 and currently lives in Santiago since 2010. Maria Paz of 23 years is described as a strong-willed girl, movie lover, the countryside and the beach. But the life of this young radically change the February 9 of 2007 when an accident, a bullet pierced the car she was in, causing a severe spinal cord injury. Currently Maria Paz is patient in Telethon and works for the campaign touring various schools of Santiago by the bar or team Telethon.

Maria Paz, How was your sports life before the accident? Mmmm, not really practiced any sport ... Just enough at school hahaha

What are your major goals? Certainly, Rio de Janeiro Olympics 2016. What is your sports routine? Four hours of daily training, two in the morning in tennis court and after lunch a gym and a tennis court.

Caused a strong impact on your life sporting the accident? At first not, but then I met the tennis exactly a year ago thanks to Telethon Institute ... Since that day my life has changed for the better by 100%.

What you do in your free time? I reest!! Hahaha, and try to see my friends ... I see very little unfortunately. Do you think Chile is concerned and invest enough in athletes with physical difficulty? They worry ... But not enough ... If you notice, nobody knows that four wheelchair tennis players went to London in 2012 ... Only a small article appeared in the newspaper ... Thus,

What have been your biggest challenges? Definitely learn to manage a sport wheelchair is not easy to face the fears and frustrations in a game and in practice has been the hardest part of this process. Who have been your biggest supports during this process? My two coaches, Doris Gildemeister and Felipe Nunez are fundamental in order to develop my career. Besides my family, without them there would be nothing I am today ...

How they intend to get results? People know little of this and all Paralympic sports in general ... Should be given more emphasis and of course give us more support. If we do not play tournaments do not get results for the country. But for that we need money ...

How they have helped you? They are constantly helping me achieve my goals ... step by step ... the wheelchair tennis is a very difficult sport and it is they who are responsible for helping both the physical and the psychological. My family has supported me behind me in my decision to dedicate myself to be a professional tennis player.

How have behaved in your particular case? I have the luck to have the support of Telethon this year to all my tournaments and sports equipment. Besides tennis federation Chile support me with a tournament. But I'm not the only athlete ... Many more need support ...

5

Time Out, November edition How do you think this can be improved, which should make the government or other organizations responsible for sport in Chile on this issue? Surely we must support the athletes. The government should support us in a better way and not just low-cost programs SENADIS ... We are elite athletes and unfortunately only appear and invite you to the coin when you built a career ... not fair and it's not easy ... Private companies could also help us and believing in us

Maria Paz competed in world tennis circuit in a wheelchair "NEC WHEELCHAIR TENNIS TOUR" which awards points for the world ranking. In Chile this girl is number 4, and in the world rankings is 131, just a year after starting their participation in professional tennis.

Good sportsmen are built by a good nutrition By @harenas Food acts like fuel that allows to sportsmen to perform physical exercises, therefore the performance of them starts for a good and balanced nutrition. This is very important because it incorporates proteins, vitamins and minerals essentials to a good performance. This is the reason why the food guide pyramid is created, which shows the proportions of how much food should be eaten in a normal day.

The diet of an average person should be around 2000 kcalories, which ones might be distributed by the food guide pyramid shows: * Diet has to be high in carbohydrates: They provide the energy necessary to perform physical exercises, because of glucose. The principal foods that contain carbohydrates are: bread, rice, cereals.

7

Time Out, November edition * Water is very important because it hydrates all the body: is well known that the body in physical exercises could lose 2.5 liters of water. Because of this water is indispensable. Drink 2 liters as minimum. (Try to not consume sodas).

* Breakfast is the main meal of the day, because in the morning is when you spend the most energy. It helps to balance the calories, vitamins, nutrients. It should consume about 20% to 25% of daily calories. A good breakfast should have a glass of milk (or other dairy like cheese, yogurt, etc.), bread or cereal, fruit (or natural juice) and small amounts of fat as butter or margarine.

* Fats are only allowed in low quantities: This helps to minimize cholesterol, but in low quantities, fats help to the absorption of lipid vitamins. Foods that contain fats are: butter, oil, mayonnaise, cream.

* Lunch served to recover some of the energy used, which allow continuing with daily activities. Is suggested to incorporate as protein as vitamins and minerals, i.e. rice with meat, tomato or lettuce salad and juice or water.

*Moderate the consumption of proteins: One should not exceed 20% of proteins in the total daily calories (2000 kcal) as it could cause kidney problems. Also proteins help in the regeneration of muscles, so a low consumption could be ending in a muscular dystrophy. The main protein foods include fish, poultry and beef.

By the way, between breakfast and lunch, you could eat something light like a fruit or yoghurt if you are hungry * Dinner should be light, low in carbohydrates, proteins and fats because these are difficult to digest, and therefore it takes a lot of time to be processed so they could cause an upset at sleep time. Dinner should be about 他 of the amount of lunch, because at night the body does not need as much energy as the day. Too much food before bedtime will cause the body to store energy as fat, so it is recommended dinner two hours before bedtime.

* Fruits and vegetables provide fiber, vitamins and minerals, also incorporate antioxidants (mainly berries) that reduce the aging process of cells. It's recommendable to consume 5 portions of fruits and vegetables daily as minimum. The consumption of food should be distributed in proportion to energy expended that is made throughout the day: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Ana Soledad Vargas:

“Everyday I learn something new” By @bernarditac & @caronaranjo

She has been 18 years working on the PUC. 4 years ago she started to make aerobic classes, because of a request from some students, they wanted a funnier gym. Although she declar strict in their classes, she says that it is vital for young people to strive and that they give their best. responsible from the team of this activities.

What physical activity do you teach? I do aqua dance classes, aerobic and I´m

10

Time Out, November edition How long do you teach it? 4 years ago I started to make aerobic classes. This activity began by the request for a gruop of students, they wanted a funnier gym. This students thought that there are so many activities for men, and she request softer and funnier activities. Thats why born many female sports.

Why you do think this activity is important? I think that aerobic is a very important and special sport, because the teacher can see results very satisfactory in his students. In the first classes some students think that they can't make some exercise or some moves. As time passed, I can see in my students a progress. I feel satisfied, because this progress is through the improvement and effort for the youngs.

11

Time Out, November edition Since when you are a teacher in the PUC? I came to working in the University in 1994. I have been 18 years working here and I can say that I'm completely happy, I love the relation with the students.

physical? I recommend him perseverance and effort. What is out in young people today is I recommend perseverance and effort. Lo que les falta a los j贸venes de hoy, is perseverance. The stayed in immediately thing and they go out. We have to teach that everything is achievement is a routine. Another thing that is very important is a healthy alimentation. In those days there a few boys that eat in a healthy way, because most of them eats fast food (cheaper) or eats something little in morning. The most worrying thing is the breakfast. A lost of students don't have breakfast time or not give the important time that this dinner has. Its has to be the most important dinner in the day because provides nutrients needed to the morning, and this have best performance and better health.

What do you like about teaching? I like work with young people, because I can see the results. I never get tired of learning from them. This year, I have two students with auditions problems, however they can develop without problems, and I'm so happy because of that. Today they prepare a final presentation with all their mates. I'm very proud of them, I'm surprised of their effort and integration. Do you feel that young people leave physical activity as an afterthought in their lives, in those days? In those days, young people stay in a sedentary life. The technology keeps all times in them, and the not use to do gymnastic exercise. When they finished school they stopped doing sports because they don't have time. This with a bad alimentation are in the results of the test. I think that in school need incredible teacher that teach about the passion that a sport need, because this is what students needs to do sports in future.

Do you believe that University forster physical activities? Why? I think so. We can see that university is concern about it, because is planning at this moment the construction of a new gym in San Joaquin Campus, and also in other campus the possibility of making rooms to physical activities. Also, students have credits with some activities, and that help them with their studies careers.

What would you recommend to someone who wants to start having a routine
