11:00 am | Author of “How to Be a Mentsh (and Not a Shmuck): Secrets of the Good Life, from the Most Unpopular People on Earth" Michael Wex, author of the bestselling Born to Kvetch and Just Say Nu, is also a novelist, professor, translator, lecturer, and performer (of stand-up and one person shows). A major figure I the Yiddish revival, Wex has been hailed as “a Yiddish national treasure.” There are people out there, millions of them, who act as if they still believe everything that their mothers told them in the first six months of their lives: they’re the nicest, most beautiful, most promising and intelligent bags of flesh ever to walk the earth, and anybody who can’t see it is a jealous fool. We call
these people shmucks. In How to Be a Mentsh (and Not a Shmuck), Michael Wex has written a guide to being human regardless of your religion or beliefs-a blueprint for living a decent and moral life, acting with self-control rather than competition. But this is no dull manual about loving thy neighbor. It’s a fast-paced and entertaining adventure through the wisdom of the ages, wherever that wisdom may be found: Yiddish proverbs, current events, Talmudic stories, movies, television, and more. Referencing pop culture and Jewish tradition with equal ease, Wex explores the strategies developed by an oppressed people to pursue happiness with their diginit-and sense of humor-intact.
BRIAN MARK RIGG 1:00 pm | Author of “Lives of Hitler’s Jewish Soldiers: Untold Tales of Men of Jewish Descent Who Fought for the Third Reich" Bryan Mark Rigg is the author of Hitler’s Jewish Soldiers, which won the William E. Colby Award for Military History, was featured on NBC-TV’s Dateline, and has been translated into eleven languages. He is also the author of Rescued from the Reich: How One of Hitler’s Soldiers Saved the Lubavitcher Rebbe. A former U.S. Marine Corps officer and volunteer in the
Israeli Army, Rigg was a professor at American University from 20002006. He is the founder and President of Rigg Wealth Management. This companion to volume to Rigg’s very successful first book, Hitler’s Jewish Soldiers, provides a closer look at the experiences of nearly two dozen of these soldiers, deepening our understanding of the complex intersection of Nazi race laws and German military service-before and during World War II.

Martin Fletcher has covered every event of consequence in the Middle East and Africa for the last thirty years. He has received four Emmys, an Overseas Press Club award, and the DuPont award. He is currently the NBC News Bureau Chief in Tel Aviv, and he covers the Israel-Palestinian conflict in Gaza. During three decades covering wars, revolutions, and natural disasters, NBC News Tel Aviv Bureau Chief
Martin Fletcher worked his way from news agency cameraman to top network correspondent, facing down his own fears while facing up to mass killers, warlords, and murderers. These extraordinary, reallife adventure stories, told with humor and elegance, describes Fletcher’s growth from clueless adventurer to grizzled veteran of the world’s trouble spots. Can you eat the food of a warlord, who stole it from the staring? Do you listen politely to a terrorist threatening to blow up your children? Do you ask the tough questions of a Khmer Rouge killer, knowing he is your only ticket out of the Cambodian jungle?

MOMMY & ME CRAFTY KIDS TUESDAYS, OCTOBER 27 – DECEMBER 15
8 weeks | $96 JCC & TS Members/$114 Non-Members 10:00 am- 10:45am open to all children ages 2-4 years old Art is an important part of your child's early childhood education, regardless of whether you think he/she will grow up to be another Picasso. Children are active learners, and making art is a handson activity that expands imaginations and exercises creativity. It also develops fine motor control and eye/hand coordination, and sharpens children's powers of observation. Children learn the fundamentals of art — color, line, shape, form and texture — by painting and drawing, making collages, fashioning threedimensional objects out of clay, and talking about their work. By creating art and looking at it, children gain an understanding of composition, balance, and symmetry. Each week we will be working on a different art project, from painting with paint brushes, hands, stamps and sponges. Using scissors and glue to create collages, hats, spinners etc. and using a wide variety of materials to explore different types or creativity. As well as discussing the art we have created.
SCIENCE & EXPLORATION TUESDAYS, OCTOBER 27 – DECEMBER 15 8 weeks | $96 JCC & TS Members/$114 Non-Members 11:00 am - 11:45 am Open to all children ages 2 - 4 years old Because they are ready to learn about the everyday world, young children are highly engaged when they have the opportunity to explore. They create strong and enduring mental representations of what they have experienced in investigating the everyday world. They readily acquire vocabulary to describe and share these mental representations and the concepts that evolve from them. Each week you and your child will be involved in various activities such as: watching snails in an aquarium, blowing bubbles, using a flashlight to make shadows, experimenting with objects to see what sinks or floats, making different types of play-doh, exploring with foods, and colors. Your child will be engaged in finding out how the world works. scissors and glue to create collages, hats, spinners etc.. and using a wide variety of materials to explore different types or creativity. As well as discussing the art we have created.
MUSIC & MOVEMENT JEWISH HOLIDAYS THURSDAYS, OCTOBER 29 – DECEMBER 17 & CULTURE (no class Nov 26) THURSDAYS, OCTOBER 29 – DECEMBER 17 7 weeks | $84 JCC & TS Members /$100 Non-Members 10:00 am- 10:45am open to all children ages 2-4 years old The early childhood years are the important years when it comes to musical development. Children who play or sing music regularly perform better in reading and math when they begin elementary school. Singing and dancing to music increases both fine and gross motor skills and helps develop hand-eye coordination, which allows children better control their bodies. Those actively involved in music also tend to have high self-esteem and are better at playing with others. It is, therefore, important to provide an environment rich with music and movement, to allow for the exploration of musical equipment, and to engage in plenty of diverse, stimulating musical activities. Each week, you and your child will be: exploring musical instruments, making musical instruments, exploring different types of music and rhymes as well as singing, dancing, playing and interacting with other children.
All classes instructed by Carrie Dorsey Camp K’helah Pre-School Teacher
(no class November 26) 7 weeks | $84 JCC & TS Members/$100 Non-Members 11:00 am - 11:45 am Open to all children ages 2 - 4 years old Each week we will be learning about different Jewish holidays and Shabbat as well as the importance of them, as well as using art to make it fun.
