DAY 1 : Font-Romeu Hotel check-in and time to settle into your room. Enjoy a glass of Muscat while we introduce you to the Carlit Hotel and the programme of excursions. Evening meal and overnight in hotel.

DAY 2 : La Cerdagne, Font-Romeu Morning: 50 km – Afternoon: 50 km La Cerdagne is a high plateau surrounded by mountains, home to an ancient regional culture where Romanesque churches, towers and defensive fortifications are to be found in abundance. A guided tour of the town of Bourg-Madame, formerly known as guinguette d’Hix, will enable you to discover its Romanesque architecture. On Sunday, you’ll be free to enjoy the market and shops of Puigcerdà. Lunch at the hotel. Visit the village and resort of Font-Romeu. See the solar furnace and the Olympic facilities related to the bid to hold the 2010 Winter Olympics in the area. The chapelle de l’Ermitage chapel is a must-see for its altarpiece and camaril, as is the Fontaine du Pèlerin, (Pilgrim’s Fountain), from where the resort gets its name. We will visit Odeillo’s Wednesday market. Visit the farm-museum of Sainte Léocadie, before visiting the ham-drying shed at Saillagouse to enjoy the finest traditional meats. Evening meal and overnight at the hotel. Programme of evening entertainment.

DAY 3 : La Côte Vermeille or le Conflent Day trip: 270 km or 105 km The Côte Vermeille, (Vermillion Coast), born where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean, boasts coves, forelands and spurs where the sun-kissed Banyuls dessert wine is grown. Visit Collioure, where the quality of light is such that it inspired many renowned painters. Tasting session and tour of the Byrrh (a wine-based aperitif) cellars: 600 vats and tuns in oak cluster round the largest oak-wood wine vat in the world (10002 hl). Visit the maison de L’Or, where you’ll sample local sweets such as turron (nougat) and rousquille (small round biscuits.) Visit and tasting session at a local winegrower’s. Lunch. Evening meal and overnight at the hotel. Programme of evening entertainment.

or The region of Le Conflent lies at the foot of Le Canigou, from where, caught half-way between the softness of the Mediterranean and the harsher world of the Pyrenees, it links le Roussillon and la Cerdagne. You’ll love Villefranche-de-Conflent – take the chance to stroll in the walled city and admire the scenes unfolding before you of numerous craft and art galleries where artists await to reveal the secrets of their works. Visit Fort Liberia (option of taking a 4x4 from the train station, 8.50€ per person). If you like, you can return on foot to the Medieval town using the underground passageway known as the ‘1000 steps passageway’. Lunch. We’ll take the road towards Le Canigou, stopping at the abbaye de St Michel de Cuxà abbey, a gem of Romanesque architecture. Evening meal and overnight at the hotel. Programme of evening entertainment. Then, for the 2 days, we return to Font-Romeu via the charming ‘little yellow train’, also known as ‘le canari’, as it winds it way through a spectacular route across the mountains (optional excursion, 10 € per person). DAY 4 : The Citadel of Mont-Louis, Prades or the Principality of Andorra Morning: 20 km – Afternoon: 100 km or day-trip: 210 km

Lunch at the hotel.

Mont-Louis, a fortress town designed by Vauban, is also the highest fortified town in France and was recently awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. Excursion to the world’s first solar furnace, where Professsor Trombe conducted his scientific experiments behind the citadel’s high walls. After passing through the fortifications, we visit the Puits des Forçats, which supplied the garrison with fresh water thanks to its huge wheel mechanism.

Prades is a Catalan town with a vibrant history and the biggest altarpiece in France, by Joseph Sunyer. The town is also linked to Pablo Casals, the cellist. Some of the finest jewellers in the world may also be found here. You’ll visit a jeweller’s workshop to discover the age-old art of working that typically Catalan gemstone, the garnet. Depending on the option chosen the night before, you will return to Font-Romeu via the stunning mountain route taken by the charming little yellow train (le canari) (optional excursion, 10 € per person) Evening meal and overnight at the hotel. or Visit the Principality of Andorra via the route des 3 Nations (3 nations’ road). You’ll be free to enjoy duty-free shopping, of course, but also to explore an age-old country where history and tradition are very much alive… Lunch in an old shepherd’s house, now converted to a restaurant, located in Os de Civis, a classic Spanish village. The old market town of la Seu d’Urgell has unexpected riches in store, being the seat of the Bishop of Urgell, one of the two ‘co-princes’ of Andorra. Discover the Bishop’s cathedral church. Return via Spain and the lovely Sègre valley, nestling amongst lush green pastureland. Evening meal and overnight at the hotel. Programme of evening entertainment.

DAY 5 : Le Capcir or L’Aude cathare and Carcassonne Day trip: 85 km or 290 km The Capcir is a land of forests, lakes, meadows and villages in granite, topped with ‘llose’ (flattish shale roofs). Walk around the mountain lake of Balcères, famous for its trout fishing, and discover the flora and fauna of the Pyrenees along the way. Barbecue lunch by the lakeshore (weather permitting). Formiguères is a traditional mountain village, with a 12th century church, Sainte Marie, boasting a bell wall with 4 bells. You’ll plunge headlong into history thanks to an original walking trail, the ‘Formiguères d’Antan’ (Formiguères of Yesteryear), featuring, at every stopping point along the way, photographs of the village taken one hundred years ago at the exact place where you are standing. Visit the Grotte de Fontrabiouse caves where you’re sure to be warmly welcomed. Bring walking shoes (can be hired in the village). Evening meal and overnight at the hotel. or Aude Cathare and Carcassonne: via the Aude valley and the Pays du Donezan, through unspoilt natural landscapes. View of the Cathar castles of Quérigut and Puylaurens. Lunch. Visit Carcassonne, a medieval town with UNESCO World Heritage status. Take the little train through the town. Evening meal and overnight at the hotel. Programme of evening entertainment. DAY 6 : Morning free – Cadi Moixero National Park (Spain) Afternoon: 30 km or 120 km or 40 km Morning free. Pre-lunch aperitif with a range of regional produce. Lunch at the hotel. Cadi Moixero National Park: This park lies at the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees, a mysterious borderland where the diversity of the climatic conditions, relief, geology and culture nevertheless form a unified whole. We’ll discover the fauna and flora of the Pyrenees. Short walk to the source of the tumultuous Llobregat river. Evening meal and overnight at the hotel. Programme of evening entertainment. Diner et logement à l'hotel. Animation en soirée.

DAY 7 : The essence of Spanish Catalonia or the Roussillon coast and the Aude Day trip: 200 km or 250 km The most emblematic Catalan sites in Spain: via the la Tosa pass. Ripoll is the resting place of many of the Catalan counts and as such, a symbol of its links to the East. Remarkable Romanesque cloister and portico in the monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll. Lunch. We strongly recommend an optional excursion (14.50€ per person): The shrine of Nuria, accessible only by rack railway, after which we pass through Ribes de Freser and the plains of Spanish Cerdagne. Evening meal and overnight at the hotel.

or The Roussillon coast and the Aude region: The lagoons between Canet and Leucate form a vast expanse of water, one of the most spectacular sights in Roussillon and Aude. Follow the coast road to Port Leucate to the oyster farm, where you’ll sample a few oysters with a glass of the local white wine. Further inland, the village of Fitou, with its wonderful views over the sea and the typically Mediterranean ‘garrigue’ landscape is an irresistible draw. Picnic lunch. Our trip continues with a visit to the European Prehistory centre at Tautavel, and a chance to see the oldest male human skeleton ever found in France. Evening meal and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 8 : Following breakfast, it’s time to head home.
