Christmas stay in the Pays Catalan DAY 1 – Monday, December 20th, 2010: Font-Romeu Hotel check-in and time to settle into your room. Enjoy a glass of Muscat while we introduce you to the Carlit Hotel and the programme of excursions. Evening meal and overnight in hotel. DAY 2 – Tuesday, December 21st, 2010: Fontrabiouse – “Little yellow train” Morning: 45 km - Afternoon: 40 km Formiguères is a traditional mountain village, with a 12th century church, Sainte Marie, boasting a bell wall with 4 bells. You’ll plunge headlong into history thanks to an original walking trail, the ‘Formiguères d’Antan’ (Formiguères of Yesteryear), featuring, at every stopping point along the way, photographs of the village taken one hundred years ago at the exact place where you are standing. Visit the Grotte de Fontrabiouse caves where you’re sure to be warmly welcomed. Lunch at the hotel. Take the charming “little yellow train”, also known as “the canary”, from Latourde-Carol to Mont-Louis. You’ll travel along the plateau of Cerdagne and enjoy its splendid panoramic view. Evening meal and overnight at the hotel. Programme of evening entertainment. DAY 3 – Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010: Vermillon Coast – Prades Day trip: 250 km The Côte Vermeille, (Vermillion Coast), born where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean, boasts coves, forelands and spurs where the sun-kissed Banyuls dessert wine is grown. Visit Collioure, where the quality of light is such that it inspired many renowned painters.Visit and wine tasting in the wine cellar of Byrrh: 600 tanks and oak barrels enclose the biggest oak vat in the world ( 10002 hl). Lunch in the town.Lunch in the town Prades is a Catalan town with a vibrant history and the biggest altarpiece in France, by Joseph Sunyer. The town is also linked to Pablo Casals, the cellist. Some of the finest jewellers in the world may also be found here. You’ll visit a jeweller’s workshop to discover the age-old art of working that typically Catalan gemstone, the garnet. DAY 4 – Thursday, December 23rd, 2010: Andorra Day trip: 210 km Visit the Principality of Andorra via the route des 3 Nations (3 nations’ road). You’ll be free to enjoy duty-free shopping, of course, but also to explore an age-old country where history and tradition are very much alive… Lunch in an old shepherd’s house, now converted to a restaurant, located in Os de Civis, a classic Spanish village. The old market town of la Seu d’Urgell has unexpected riches in store, being the seat of the Bishop of Urgell, one of the two ‘co-princes’ of CHRISTMAS STAY – ASSOCIATIONS 2010

Andorra. Discover the Bishop’s cathedral church. Return via Spain and the lovely Sègre valley, nestling amongst lush green pastureland. Evening meal and overnight at the hotel. DAY 5 – Friday, December 24th, 2010: Mont-Louis – The Cerdagne, Font-Romeu Morning: 20 km - Afternoon: 50 km Mont-Louis, a fortress town designed by Vauban, is also the highest fortified town in France and was recently awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. Excursion to the world’s first solar furnace, where Professor Trombe conducted his scientific experiments behind the citadel’s high walls. After passing through the fortifications, we visit the Puits des Forçats, which supplied the garrison with fresh water thanks to its huge wheel mechanism Lunch at the hotel. Visit the village and resort of Font-Romeu. See the solar furnace and the Olympic facilities related to the bid to hold the 2010 Winter Olympics in the area. The chapelle de l’Ermitage chapel is a must-see for its altarpiece and camaril, as is the Fontaine du Pèlerin, (Pilgrim’s Fountain), from where the resort gets its name. La Cerdagne is a high plateau surrounded by mountains, home to an ancient regional culture where Romanesque churches, towers and defensive fortifications are to be found in abundance. A guided tour of the town of Bourg-Madame, formerly known as guinguette d’Hix. Then we’ll head to the ham drier of Saillagouse, in order to taste the best traditional charcuterie (cooked pork meats). Christmas Eve dinner. You’ll be entertained by an accordionist clown during the meal, and the children will get their presents from Santa Claus. Midnight Mass and overnight at the hotel. DAY 6 – Saturday, December 25th, 2010: Free morning – Walking with snowshoes Day trip: 45 km Free morning. Lunch at the hotel. You’ll leave in the beginning of the afternoon to a walk in the valley of Llo and the gorges of Sègre, a place where the witches used to meet. We’ll discover this typical village of Cerdagne, its architecture and its roofs, made with llose (stone). We’ll also see the roman church, a treasure of the roman art. The ruins of the patrol tower on the ancient castle, slightly elevated, will give away its secrets and details of its history. We’ll finish this journey in the baths of Llo, which are supplied with water by the spring of Puigmal. Relax and enjoy this wonderful bath, as well as the indoor and outdoor Jacuzzis, the saunas and Turkish baths. Evening meal and overnight at the hotel.
