HASSAN FATHY from_"ARCHITECTURE FOR THE POOR"

"Development without self-help is an impossibility. But people whose surroundings are ugly and barren are apt to be unproductive and dispirited. This is not the idle speculation of a do-gooder. Any factory manager knows its truth. Workers in bright, attractive surroundings produce more than workers in ugly, drab surroundings. The human spirit is our most precious resource. Its ecology is our greatest challenge."

The project has been implemented in an urban somewhat confusing. In this part of the town, we realize that there are some particularities, beyond the fact that this is a fishnig zone, we can identify diferent types os architecture natured in traditional and modern techniques, as well as, stone walls built in Oporto city in the Roman era. The program for this project is base in a multifunctional building , which combines housing, commerce and services programs. In the following pages, we present the study of a single housing building present in all this multifunctional building, their are plans, sections and details.

Demolish or Not? Bairro do Aleixo, that's the question redesenhar a malha urbana presente na freguesia de Lordelo do Ouro, Porto. Antes de mais, importa referir que o projecto surge numa altura em que

In the fourth year of college, the challenge was to redesign urban plan present in Lordelo do Ouro, Porto. First, it should be noted that the project comes at a time in which was discussed the permanence of the Torres Aleixo in Oporto. The Mayor of Porto, proposed to the local population the demolition of these buildings, because this is a very privileged area in terms of views and location. Analysing the site and therefore thedwellers of this area, we've put up the following question: What is your opinion regarding to the demolition of the Torres do Aleixo? Opinions were diverse. For most people, knowing the history of this place in terms of crime drugs and other stuff, the solution is to demolition the towers. For teh residents of Bairro do Aleixo, the destruction is not the answer for the local problems, because they look to this buildings as their home, a place where many of them grew up, learned to read and write and also many of them even work. Considering the opinion of the population, concluded that, the solution is not the destruction of the towers, there are ways to get around criminality of some residents without destroying the towers. Furthermore, these spaces were a mark in the history of the city, built in the industrial age, they were to the city of Porto the first buildings constructed in that time in order to give a roof to the workers.

an Design

During the design phase, i've identified 3 different zones, 3 types of construction, and therefore 3 types of population. The very experience of space changes from area to area. The main idea for this project is a connection between these three zones, through pedestrian and car paths, through socializing zones and through a suitable and functional program for the place and it's people.

ool of Arts

The following project was also elaborated in the fourth year of college and it follows on the previous on design in Bairro do Aleixo. That so, it's asked to idealize a School of Arts, which must be integrated with the surroundings, local people and also, with the people that goes there everyday day. Following the functional program and the masterplan previously established , the main problem for this project was precisely in the architectural design. That so, the architectural model should be integrated with the surounding area, it should be associated with the local population and elsewhere in the city. The design tries to create some confortable places for the students inside and outside, and also it gives a new street facade. We know that, in this area, there was a school before, unfortunately, at the moment, it's unused, because of it's location. Knowing the local people needs, a school for this areameans that the population don't need no more to move to further places. The organization of this building part of a patio, which creates in the interior ou interior places that are and need to be continously shared.

Palazzo Minotto, is located in one of the straight streets of Venice. The project intention is to make the restoration of the building, so that in the future we can introduce the Lawyers Association. The building, in a frist analysis, is in a total desfragmentation, mos of the external paint is off in the inside, most of the floors are succumb, and in some part the difference between levels is so much that we can see it and feel it when we are walking inside. Palazzo Minotto, as suffered a lot in some many different way. In every type of transformation that has occured in the last years in the building, were introduced new elements and also new functions, problably that's the main reason for itself breakdown. The main idea for this project was to maintain the same architectural line that exists already in the building. Following the pre-established program, we've inserted, in the north facade, a new building for the vertical acess between all four floors.

All over the Italian territory , we are faced with a confusing planning or as they call a " diffuse city " . The area under study lies precisely in the northern Italian region , and not only this one but every type of urban design there are anomalies sucha as abandonment and malfunction of some infrastructure and industrial zones. The abandonment is also affecting the agricultural areas. In line with this, the studt area, was chosen because of the repeated declining and out of function pebble cavas. In the territory this areas ocupy a few acres, and many of them, are mostly surrounded by a large agricultural fields and low-density constructions. It should be noted that these areas are somewhat noisy and therefore they exists in a mile os 2km or more far from the city center. Acess to these areas are fairly easy to make, all of them have car acess and even pedestrian paths through the fields and agricultural disqualified roads. The main goal of this project, in an urban scale, was to reuse this places reattaching them if the fragmented areas in the city. That so, we've intended to make the cava a connecting element instead of a separating element. Therefore, the perfect program to introduce in this areas it's base in trade and tourism. Knowing this, to give a more fun and relaxing look to this place, we've introduced certain points of viem an reading, also an outdoor cinema and finally a hostel in order to bring more tourist to this area. Resuming the project theme "Recycle a diffuse city", the project seeks to take advantage of all the elements that are no longer used by the city and the people , whether in terms of construction and architectural object .

The main theme of the thesis is precisely the lack of housing in the developing countries, such as, those who belong to the African continent. The need of the local population in the territory is eminent, we're facing with a devastating and a moody scenario, where the social problems clearly overlap the economic and political difficulties of the continent. That said, the title of this thesis is "Africa, emergency architecture. Bambu-slum, between economic, environmental and social problems."

Therefore, the project developed according to three principles, the frist one was to optimize the architectural object with the urban space , by the use of local material and the use of an appropriate architectural form to the place and it's population; second one was the modular design , which allows a continuous and organized transformation in the building, adapted with the number of residents in the house; and finally we have the technical efficency of the architectural piece, meaning the use of natural ventilation for colling down the house, the use of solar energyfor heating the house and the use of local materials accessible to anyone anywhere, it creates a relationship with the place and the environment.

The main idea of this project was to conceive a sustainable, flexible and low cost house. Followed by this, this place it's destined to the lower social class in Nairobi, named as "slum dwellers".

RUA PRINCIPAL

The sustainability of this places comes with the use of local and natural materials, such as, Bamboo and Earth. On the other hand, this materials mean low cost construction which means low cost housing. Finally, a flexible construction, represents the inumerous transformations in this houses that comes with the growing of this families, so this places must be prepared to make any type of transformation and any type of growth that is needed. In addition to a sustainable, flexible and low cost housing, we propose an organized urban desining, which in the case is not specified.

During the work, doubts related with local culture and tradition have arisen. For example, the influence of religion in the architectural spatial organization. So the question is: How does religion affect the architectural design in the world? In Africa, especially in Kenya, Catholic religion is the predominant, therefore allows us to a freer drawing, in community and a drawing open to everything and everyone. That said, knowing the way of life of this population, the interior space is divided in two areas, such as bedrooms and kitchen. On the other hand, the exterior is focused to an interaction between the family and neighbours, therefore exists a social zone, a vegetable garden and a chicken coop, which encourages the family maintenance.

As said previously, the materials that are the most important to this project, are bamboo and local earth, and also, to reinforce the element we use lime, gravel, stones and concrete. The bamboo, it's applied in the structure of the building, creating some sort of cage. However, it also applied in the windows, door and roof, allowing natural ventilation in the building. In the other hand, earth it's the lining of the building, it's use as a protection to the bamboo structure. This material can be applied in so many different ways, to this project is important to mention that, the earth is flush in the structure. Being an absorbing material, earth in warm periods absorbs the heat to irradiate in the coldest periods of the year.
