Caring is Sharing – Using Social Media In HealthCare Caring is Sharing – Using Social Media In HealthCare Approximately 75% of companies now use Twitter as a marketing channel. Large corporations are absolutely cleaning house with their social media campaigns and reaching all sorts of new and existing customers socially. Consumers couldn’t be happier with it – about 50% of social networking users are following their favorite brands. Yet, with all the initial success that has been documented, not all industries have been as eager to hop on the bandwagon. For whatever reason, the healthcare industry continues to rely upon the methods used presocial networking to market their services, such as books, billboards, and newspapers. Over the last 15 years, technology has made some huge leaps forward in allowing all of us to share tons of information with one another and communicate more efficiently via the internet, mobile devices, etc. However, while this technological revolution was kicking off in the late 90s and has allowed the rest of the world to experience new heights of integration, the evolution of HIPAA and its constant demand for stronger privacy controls have clipped the healthcare industry’s wings and kept it grounded. HIPAA violations can cost healthcare providers up to millions in penalties, not to mention a huge hit to the value of their brand. According to statistics found on spydertrap.com, only about 1,200 hospitals (assuming this was US only) were utilizing social networking in 2011. To put this in perspective, here in Texas we have about 650 hospitals total. Granted, Texas is huge, but still. This means, on average, that only 24 hospitals in each state participate in social networking of some sort. Remember the 1.36 billion social networking participants around the globe who too get sick and need help too, don’t they? Aren’t they just as much consumers of healthcare services as they are consumers of technology or durable goods? Yet, only 1,200 hospitals have elected to engage these masses socially, leaving most of the 1.36 billion people craving something a bit more. This is the problem that led to the creation of Cariloop.
