Firearm complaint results in multiple search warrants, drugs, tobacco, $30k cash seized by RCMP Killam RCMP Detachment Sgt. Colin Thorne On Wednesday, Nov. 3, Killam RCMP received third-party information about someone pointing a firearm in the presence of a child. Killam Members were able to corroborate this information and on Monday, Nov 8, obtained a warrant to search a Sedgewick residence for the firearm in question. During the course of that search, Members, along with the assistance of the Emergency Response Team, located several controlled substances and associated paraphernalia. This led Members to obtain another warrant to search for more controlled substances. Killam members with assistance of Eastern Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit (EADCRU), executed a CDSA warrant where they seized a quantity of drugs (including fentanyl, methamphet-
amine, and GHB), property related to trafficking, 32 Cartons of unstamped tobacco, and cash estimated to be approx. $30,000. On Wednesday, Nov. 10, Killam and Viking Members responded to a residential break enter in progress north of Lougheed. The homeowner, who wasn’t home at the time, reported to police that the property had real-time camera surveillance of the inside of the residence. The homeowner also indicated that the suspect had access to a firearm. Members contained the scene and requested the Emergency Response Team be deployed to assist. In the interim, the members on scene attempted to communicate with the suspect who had responded verbally and refused to exit the residence. ERT arrived and took over negotiation with the suspect, who subsequently surrendered after observing the approach
of the ERT TAV (Tactical Armoured Vehicle). No firearm was located in the residence. Killam RCMP handled 227 Total calls for service between Oct. 23 to Nov. 20, compared to 214 for the same time last year. Thirteen of these resulted in charges, either under the Criminal Code or Traffic Safety act. Of note were two Break and Enter charges, two failure to comply with conditions, one Mischief – Damage to Property, and Possession of property obtained by crime. There were 48 charges made during this period under the Traffic Safety Act. The general public reported 29 suspicious persons or vehicles during this period, something that RCMP continue to encourage. Killam RCMP encourages anyone who experiences a property crime or
suspicious activity report to police, not just post it on social media. There were 32 Motor vehicle collisions reported over this period, largely attributed to the recent snowfall, and several animal collisions. RCMP responded to two assault complaints. There continues to be a low number of Persons crime in our area. Members received two reports of extortion this period and six complaints of fraud. RCMP would like to remind people not to share intimate images online, especially to those you don’t know personally or have not met. Nor should you send any money, gift cards to anyone you don’t know, or respond to requests after receiving a phone call from a suspicious person claiming to be calling from a government agency. Call RCMP if you suspect you’re a target of fraud.
