Savour the best berries at Emjay’s Michelle Pinon Editor Emjay’s Prairie Berries owners Judy and Marvin Hrudey recently published a collection of heritage recipes that is dedicated to her mother Helen. Sitting at the kitchen table in their Andrew area home Judy said her mother died way too early, (53-years-old), but is happy to continue her mother’s legacy. In the book’s dedication she states: “Mother left us with a huge collection of recipes that will be cherished and used for generations to come!” Baba Helen Makowichuk was a terrific hostess, but a better cook. In fact, her culinary talents were legendary among her family and friends and one of the most popular recipes was her Graham Wafer Cake that was always requested for family gatherings. “Family always came to the farm,” said Judy. Judy grew up south of Willingdon, and spent a lot of time in the kitchen as well. Her mom kept her recipes in a three ring binder and included such tasty things like: Alivinch (Romanian Cheese Bread), Homemade Noodles, Beet Horseradish Relish, Cabbage Rolls, Honey Cookies, Hairy Hill Dill Pickles, and so much more! Judy also added her own batch of recipes to the collection, recipes such as: Sour Cherry
Buckle, Haskap Lemon Pound Cake, Saskatoon Crunch, Chokecherry Wine, etc. While Marvin doesn’t spend a lot of time in the kitchen, he is busy in the orchard for months on end with acres of fruit trees. “I like to try different varieties,” said Marvin, who gives guests a personalized tour on his Kubota ATV. He currently has between 12 and 15 varieties of fruit trees and berries. While the Andrew area couple have been in business for around 10 years now, they say 2017 is probably their busiest season yet. The Haskap berry is continually rising in popularity and her expects it will become the Canadian berry sometime during the next generation. He is continually learning and sharing his knowledge and experience as a grower, and added that the exposure during Farmer’s Markets has been great. They bring their boun-
ty to several markets a week, and have added their own Facebook page, which has been a great edition to their marketing efforts. Even though Aline Dubuc had never heard of Emjay’s until last week, she said she will be definitely back. The Lamont resident and her partner Ed Sampson were picking raspberries, and were amazed by the quality of the berries they discovered at the orchard. She loves canning, making jams and pickles, and tries to eat as many fresh and healthy farm fresh products as possible. “Most definitely, I will be back next year,” raved Aline. Those words couldn’t be sweeter, and Judy and Marvin are hoping many people will travel two kilometres east of Andrew and north on Range Road 163 on Sunday, August 20 to enjoy Alberta Open Farm Days at their place. Visitors are welcome to come between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

As children head back to school, it’s important that they are set up for success. You can help by making them an appointment for a comprehensive eye exam.
