As spring heads towards summer we are gearing up for our busiest time of year here in Brecon and Radnorshire. It is my favourite time of year too – show season and it is coming up fast. I look forward to seeing a great many of you enjoying the Royal Welsh, Brecon Show and many more shows across our area this year.

This past month has seen a great deal of action too. I was humbled with the turnout and level of support for Gwernyfed and Brecon High Schools at the meetings to help save the schools. I have been working hard behind the scenes to do all I can to save our local schools and was proud that so many people turned out to tell Powys County Council not to close the door on our children’s education. Rest assured, I will do all I can to help keep our superb schools open.

Another blight to our area recently has been cross border farm payments. While many of our farmers have now received their basic payment, too many are still yet to receive a penny. To help try to resolve the problem I have met with both Liz Truss, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and George Eustice, the farming minister, to raise individual cases with them. They have assured me that they are doing everything they can to expedite the process and get farmers paid as quickly as possible. Do get in touch if you are still having problems and I will do everything I can to help.

Furthermore, if any of you have been paid over the last two months do please get in touch and I will register you so that this situation will hopefully not happen again next year.

Finally, a massive congratulations to Rhosgoch Young Farmers on their tremendous recent fun ride. I had a fantastic day out with my family; my wife, Liz, even rode the course! A massive well done to all who helped organise the event and congratulations on raising over £2700 for the Young Farmers.

Kirsty Williams The first think I’d like to say to everyone is a huge thank you!

After the result in this constituency last year, this election was always going to be a tough fight for me. The Conservatives made it clear that Brecon and Radnorshire was one of their top target seats, so to win by over 8,000 votes is absolutely fantastic.

I am humbled that so many people put their faith in me and I will work every day to repay that faith.

Representing Brecon and Radnorshire in the Assembly has been one of my greatest privileges.

This constituency has the most amazing people, people willing to stand up for their communities. I look forward to working with these communities over the coming months and years to protect our vital public services and to bring more – well paid jobs to the area.

My priorities are to save the schools at risk of closure and to get Brecon the new high School it needs; to improve and increase local health services including bringing chemotherapy to our community hospitals; better broadband and mobile phone services; and better support for our farmers with a dedicated uplands payments scheme.

The National Assembly I have returned to is very different to the one I left in April. For the first time, we now have a group of UKIP members, who already have a new leader before they we even started. It will be very interesting to see how they engage with the institution and its processes.

It will also be a very different time for me personally.

I am no longer the leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats so I will have a changed job and a changed focus, but, as has always been the case, my number one priority will be the people of Brecon and Radnorshire. So, if I can help you in any way, please get in touch.

Celebration of Two Poets

In 1794, the young poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge took a gap year from his studies and walked around Wales. The landscape, creativity and communities that he discovered inspired him. The Coleridge in Wales Festival from May to August 2016 celebrates this journey with over 80 events - concerts, recitals, exhibitions, parties, conversations - in different locations along the route that he followed.

The Swan of the Usk concert at Llansantffraed Church on Saturday 18th June, organised by the Brecknock Society and the Unicorn Singers, is the main Festival event in the Brecon area. Coleridge’s route passed through Llansantffraed, near Talybont-on-Usk, where Breconshire’s famous poet Henry Vaughan, the Swan of the Usk, lived in the 1600s and lies buried in the churchyard. Coleridge would have read Vaughan’s poetry and discovered the Brecon Beacons environment that inspired it.

The concert will present a unique programme of music and poems associated with Henry Vaughan’s lifetime and works. It will be a celebration of God, Nature and Man including choral settings of his poems by Elgar and Parry, and lute songs by Purcell, Lawes and Croft.

Proceeds from the concert will help to maintain Llansantffraed Church, which is a Victorian gem and has a good acoustic for concerts. A new book on Henry Vaughan and the Usk Valley published by Logaston Press in April provides an easy to read introduction to the life and work of Henry Vaughan and his Llansantffraed heritage.

Connecting Carers to build support

Over 17,000 children, young people and adults in Powys are looking after someone close to them.

That’s 1 person in every 8. Illness and disability can affect anyone and any family.

6th – 12th June is Carers Week, celebrating unpaid family Carers of all ages, and the incredible work they do in our communities. Local charity Powys Carers Service is asking everyone in Powys to do one thing …to Think Carer!

Think Carer! –Think about who you know who is caring for someone who for whatever reason needs extra help. It could be caring for a parent with Alzheimers, a partner with cancer, or a child with autism. It may be a child or young person caring for a parent with mental health problems or a sibling with disabilities.

Think about these quiet heroes in our communities and what you could do to support them?

The Mothers Union Celebrating its 140th anniversary The Mothers Union, started by Mary Sumner in her rectory sitting room in 1876, for young mothers in the parish of Old Alresford in Hampshire, is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year. The movement spread quickly, and today there are about 4 million members (both women and men) in 83 countries around the world.

The Brecon branch started in 1888, so they have had a presence in Brecon for 128 years.The Mothers Union raise money for the Away-from-it-all Project, providing caravan holidays for families under stress.

They support safe houses of the Diocese, have helped flood victims around the country, and have been collecting clothes, especially hats, scarves and gloves for refugee families. They have also collected tools, sewing machines, material and sewing aids for Tools for Self Reliance Cymru in Crickhowell.

They also raise money to help poor countries,

especially in Africa, to help with parenting programmes and with literacy training for women.

For example, in Ethiopia only 35% of women can read so the Mothers Union runs literacy classes teaching them both reading and writing skills. All money sent out for any project is done through MU workers so it goes to and is used for the purpose intended.

One of the ways they raise money is by their coffee morning, to be held in Bishop Bevan Hall on Friday 10th June. Please go and support them, and you will be given a good welcome, and they will answer any questions you may have. Their regular meetings are held in the Deanery Centre at the Cathedral on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 2pm. “We always appreciate new members joining us.�

Get to really know... Brian Popsys Brian moved to the area in 2007 with his wife Kate and their 6 children, having been bought up in Wellington, Nr Telford, and then spent many years in the armed forces.

Kate and Brian bought Brecon Pet and Garden Centre in October 2015. Brian is a keen gardener when he has the time, and Kate has worked in the Pet industry for many years, so they felt they were very well placed to take on this well established shop in Brecon and keep it going for another 35 years. When Brian was invited to join the newly re-established Brecon Chamber of Trade, little did he know he would end up taking on the role of Chairman. Large-Scale Music from Brecknock Orchestra If you like your music on a grand scale, then this summer’s concert from Brecknock Sinfonia is for you.

Organ soloist, Jonathan Holmes joins the orchestra for two works which explore the instrument’s many moods and voices. Poulenc’s Concerto for Organ, Timpani and Strings goes from impish to mystical, grand to whimsical, all with infectious rhythms and catchy tunes. Nothing comes grander than Wagner’s opening Prelude to Lohengrin, which begins the concert, except perhaps the main work of the evening, Saint-Saens’ mighty Organ Symphony.The first three movements are lyrical and full of melody and build up to the finale, when the thunderous entry of the organ is met by waves of fanfares from the orchestra in one of the great moments of romantic music.

This is a rare chance to hear a full symphony orchestra in tandem with a great cathedral organ.Tickets are on sale at the door for £12 with no charge for children.

A special concert at Brecon Cathedral A special concert in Brecon Cathedral in July will be raising money for good causes both at home and abroad.

The event on Saturday 16th July, will benefit the Brecon Foodbank, which has been helping crisishit local families since 2014, and also the Hands Up Foundation, which provides emergency aid for refugees in war torn Syria, working alongside international charity Médecins Sans Frontières.

John Speed’s map of Brecon dated 1610 Election Wards of Brecon Town A 1698 document written by Hugh Thomas, the Breconshire Herald, described the wards of Brecon as: “The first six wards (High Street superior, High Street inferior, Ship Street, Saint Mary’s ward, Morganwg ward and Cantre Seliff) are enclosed within the walls of the town and do contain 152 families, all having very fair stone built houses; the streets compact, handsome and broad, having not in the aforesaid number above seven thatched houses, which I believe is less than can be found in any town in Wales.

The other six wards are without the walls, and are limited as followeth: ” The Watton, Heol Rudd ward, Old Port inferior ward, Old Port superior ward and Llanvase ward. Between these eleven wards there were 339 families and about 200 burgesses who could vote at an election for a member of Parliament.

The twelfth ward “Trecastle ward in the parish of Llhewel” was also part of the town of Brecon.

Protecting wildlife for the future

Wild in June

flowers can be seen to range from yellow / white when first open to blue when fully mature. Look out for this one in wetter places – they occur near the Wye in Hay. The Water Forget-me-not is also common right by the Wye and other rivers and is the showiest of the species we have in our area. There are also two smaller species to be found in boggier places.

The Wildlife Trust is busy with events in June with a “Party in the Park” at Craig-y-nos Country Park on the 1st followed by a walk at the same location on the 4th.

Myosotis discolor Forget-me-nots will be flowering widely this month and most of those by the roadside will be common species like Field Forget-me-not.

There are many more species to look out for including the Changing Forget-me-not pictured. This can be hard to spot and certainly repays close examination as the tiny

The companies with pension fund time bombs

BHS’s recent demise throws spotlight on other final salary pension schemes. A recent study finds one in six schemes in the private sector are at serious risk.

The collapse of BHS is a sobering affair. Staff in its final salary pension scheme are being rescued by the Pension Protection Fund, but those who aren’t yet retired will still end up with far less income than they expected in old age.

The retailer’s £571million black hole in its pension fund was far from the only cause of its woes, but its vast size and the controversy surrounding the firm’s demise has thrown the spotlight on other final salary pension schemes.

F FAMILY PROTECTION

Out of 6,000 schemes in total, some 600 are expected to become insolvent in the next five to ten years, and a further 400 will struggle to survive unless they manage to offload their pension obligations, according to last December’s report from the Pensions Institute.

The Pension Protection Fund estimates the current outstanding liabilities of all schemes stands at £800 billion. With people living longer and as a result pensions being paid for longer this deficit is only likely to increase.

Scheme members pre-retirement have the option of transferring their retirement benefits to a personal pension arrangement. This removes the employer of any responsibility to provide a member pension during retirement, the risk has been transferred from employer to member and as such should be given very careful consideration.

Final salary schemes are dying on the vine but for the millions of existing members it has never been more important to seek advice and to find out whether their scheme is currently running a deficit.

Results of this year’s Local Landscapes Photography Competition Thank you again to all of the entries which were sent in. There is so much photographic talent in our area.

We had a hard time narrowing it down to the final 12, let alone the final 3!

First prize went to Karl McCarthy, who captured this amazing image at Keepers Pond, Blaenavon. This fresh and vibrant image is a great front cover for our 2017 Local Landscapes Calendar.

Second prize went to Grant Hyatt. All us judges loved this magical pink sky.This will be the image for January, what a lovely image to start the year!

Third prize went to Will Lewis, who captured this lovely image of springtime Hay-on-Wye. This bright and cheery image will be super for May, the month of the Hay Festival!
