Matt Simms

ennessee’s Matt Simms arrived at Knoxville ready to jump on the field in 2010. He played the 2008 season with Louisville and came from El Camino Community College in California this past January. Football is not an unfamiliar sport in the Simms’ household. His father is a former New York Giants quarterback, and his older brother was quarterback for Texas. In the 2009 season Simms completed 159 of 269 passes for El Camino. He had 2,204 yards and 17 touchdowns under his belt last season. Simms stepped into the quarterback position after the Vols lost Jonathan Crompton at the end of last season. The junior quarterback weighs in at 217 pounds and 6-foot-3-inches. Simms threw 9 of 13 passes for 179 yards and one touchdown against the Georgia Bulldogs. He was sacked a total of four times and threw one interception. So far this season, he has thrown 88 of 154 for four interceptions, 1,136 yards and 7 touchdowns. His best game came against the UAB Blazers. He went 19-of-34, passing for 245 yards and 3 touchdowns. He connected with wide receiver Denarius Moore for a 25-yard touchdown pass in the second overtime. He elaborated on the play in the post-game conference. “He [Denarius Moore] was my first read on the play, came off the play action, the safety flat footed there for a split-second and that was all the time I needed to make my decision,” Simms said. “I just tried to put it in a place where he could go up and get it and jump over the corner and that is exactly what he did."
