Independent Energy, Sustainability & Technical Consultancy
About Us Carbon Futures are a leading independent energy and sustainability consultancy focussed on delivering lowcarbon, cost-effective solutions to a variety of sectors within the construction industry. Employing extensive expertise in energy assessment, design certification, dynamic thermal modelling and construction consultancy, Carbon Futures operate as an intrinsic part of project design teams offering a comprehensive suite of services to clients ranging from architects and developers through to registered social landlords and local authorities. Our experience covers a range of disciplines across the construction industry. Together with our commercial awareness we deploy our extensive knowledge to provide quality advice and technical support throughout the lifecycle of developments. Our clients benefit from having complete confidence that their project will achieve regulatory compliance via the most practical and cost-effective route. Engaging with Carbon Futures from as early as concept stage will ensure that your design is developed to be fully compliant and optimised to meet your desired level of energy performance and sustainability – minimising the risk of falling short of building regulations or the expense of delivering an over-specified project. Our aim is to provide significant value on all projects by working closely with design teams to produce sustainable, energy efficient strategies that meet or even exceed the standards set by Planning & Building Standards.
Fabric First Solutions
Carbon Futures have extensive inhouse experience of designing and delivering new-build housing for local authorities, registered social landlords, private developers and leading contractors throughout the country. This service includes Standard House Type Design, Standard Detail Packs and Outline Specifications.
Carbon Futures can assist design teams to develop fabric first solutions through material selection advice, thermal bridging analysis, U-value performance review and SAP & SBEM assessment to ensure the fabric design is fully optimised from the outset.
Independent Assessor (Sustainability)
Carbon Futures are qualified to perform the role of Independent Assessor, to verify compliance with Section 7 (Sustainability) of the Scottish Building Standards.
From the outset, Carbon Futures work collaboratively with design teams to develop a sustainable low carbon strategy to meet or even exceed the standards set by the Section 7 (Sustainability - Bronze, Silver & Gold).
Heating & Cooling Loads
A sustainable building promotes the health and wellbeing of its occupants. Carbon Futures can undertake an assessment to predict the indoor temperatures and recommend measures to prevent overheating in current and future climates and comply with industry requirements (CIBSE TM52, BB101, BREEAM).
Building heat losses and heat gains should be calculated to ensure equipment is sized correctly to avoid using unnecessary and costly energy. Carbon Futures can evaluate your designs or existing building and calculate the heating and/or cooling loads to assist in delivering the optimum services solution.
Our Services Energy Statements
A sustainable development requires a robust energy statement from the offset. At Carbon Futures we work with you to develop a project specific strategy to meet your energy and carbon emissions targets, sustainability aspirations (BREEAM credits) and associated legislation requirements.
Carbon Futures work with design teams from the early stages to ensure fully compliant, energy efficient specifications are developed from the outset, avoiding the unwanted expense of falling short of the Building Standards.
Building Regulation Compliance
Approved Certifier of Design (Energy)
As accredited Low Carbon Consultants and Energy Assessors, Carbon Futures are fully qualified to offer building certification on both residential and commercial developments. From planning to practical completion, we will ensure your project complies with Section 6 (Energy) of the Scottish Building Standards.
As Approved Certifiers of Design, Carbon Futures are fully qualified to certify the energy design of buildings in Scotland. 10% discount is applied to the entire cost of the building warrant application fee, when a Certificate of Design is submitted with the original warrant application.
Energy Performance Certificates
Carbon Futures are fully accredited energy assessors for new-build dwellings and non-domestic buildings and can issue energy performance certificates (EPC's) in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
With thermal bridging accounting for up to 25% of heat loss through the building fabric, Carbon Futures work with design teams to identify effective measures to minimise the risk of condensation and mould growth, limit heat loss, and ultimately reduce energy costs.
LZCGT Studies Low and zero carbon generating technologies (LZCGT) are increasingly required to meet CO related legislation, and if designed correctly, they may also offer considerable financial savings. Carbon Futures can carry out a feasibility study to establish the optimum solution for your project, with projected savings and paybacks. 2
Daylight Analysis The provision of sufficient natural daylight is known to boost the health, wellbeing and productivity of individuals in buildings. We can undertake dynamic simulations to predict daylight levels for your project to meet your targets and aspirations (BREEAM, LEED, BB87).
IES Model Auditing Nowadays, building performance modelling software influences the design of almost every non-dometic construction project. Carbon Futures are suitably qualified to audit complex IES models giving clients confidence in their results.
