OBJECTIVE This assignment allowed me to showcase my ability to identify a design flaw and find ways to adapt these problems into a successful and appealing design. I researched a fairly unheard of band with little to no cover art/ logo design. The band I chose is called FeverTribe. Throughout my research, I was only able to come upon one cover, which displayed a mandala using shades of blue and green. Also a logo with a hand-written styled typeface. My objective was to create a logo and cover art that displayed the feel of the band while creating a visually pleasing design.

LOGO INSPIRATION For the logo, I wanted to experiement with several type faces before deciding on the final one. I appreciated the look of a hand-written font while I was also drawing to a more slender and tall lettering. I wanted to capture the mellow, flowing vibes that FeverTribe created in their music.

TYPE STUDY I experimented with different typefaces to see if any of them sparked an interest with me. I ruled out serifs and scripts, but was drawn to the fonts in sans serif- Josefin Sans in particular. The slanted “e” was something I was very interested in working with. While I also found the thin, simple lines to be very appealing.

LOGO SKETCHES I played with the idea of incorporating a mandala into the new logo design, but failed to come to something that suited what I was looking for. I quickly ruled out thick, blocky lettering and also decided that a script font was not working either. I decided to lean more towards the ideas I had in numbers 3, 6 and 9.

FINAL LOGO DESIGN The final logo was handwritten and converted into vector art in Illustrator, where it was tweaked to reach it’s final form. A small sun element was added to the middle to give balance and substance to the design. The sun is referenced in most, if not all, songs in FeverTribe’s album. The logo is balanced and neat yet still gives off a natural and carefree vibe, just like the music.

MOOD BOARDS

The Balance

I chose three tracks from FeverTribes album that I wanted to create cover art for. I listened to these song on repeat for hours until I complteted a mood board for each. Each mood board displays images, colors, elements and textures that came to mind while listening to each track. Out of the three, I chose to move forard with the song called Free Rain.

COVER ART INSPIRATION I had so many ideas in my head- watercolors, earthly elements, photography, illlustration. At this point I know I am on the brink of an epiphany for what I truly wanted this cover to convey. All of these ideas were reflections of the smooth, simple earth vibes that the music made me feel.

FINAL COVER ART The final cover art took a complete 360 turn from my original ideas. I experiemented with watercolors, and earthly elements in which I showed interest in my mood boards and cover art inspiration pages. I was very unsatisfied with how the process was going. As I continued to listen to the music, I did some self reflection about how it made me feel and what those emotions reminded me of. Late one night, the solution just clicked- Sea glass! The earth tone colors, the lighting, the mist of water, I pictured it perfectly in my head and the next morning it came together all with the perfect morning lighting. The layering of the sea glass eminates the repeating guitar riffs in the song while the colors and lighting create the calming effect I was searching for. I designed the composition with the text features in mind to create a cover design that truly reflected the tone of FeverTribe’s music.
