Women’s Leadership Institute seeks local nominations for 2010 program AUBURN, Ala. – The Women’s Leadership Institute at Auburn University is currently seeking nominations of students for the May 2010 program. The Institute’s five-day program will be held May 24-28. Nominees should possess strong leadership potential and also have a desire to be involved in public life. Instructors, professors and employers are encouraged to nominate any woman they believe exhibits the potential to become a future leader. Currently, the program is trying to recruit a group of diverse participants, but the Institute continues to seek students from the Southeast. Because of cultural differences among the regions of the U.S., the Institute wants students from all areas of the country in order to nationalize the education during the five-day program, preparing participants to be leaders wherever they choose. Over the course of the five days, participants build teamwork skills, draft a bill and present the bill to Alabama legislators. The Women’s Leadership Summit, held on the fourth day of the program, allows the participants to hear stories of 25 leaders and how they earned their positions.

An objective of the Institute is to create infinite possibilities for all women, and one of the goals is to empower women for a lifetime of leadership. Barbara Baker, the director of the Institute, said she wants students to be able to interact with the leaders and not just listen to them talk about their achievements. “When you’re 18 or 20, and you look at Hillary Clinton, or you look at Nancy Pelosi or you look at all these people and you think ‘I’m not going to be able to do that,’ but in reality you can,” said Baker. “If you could just see how a real person got from here to there, then it’s like, ‘Oh, well that’s right, we’re all just people aren’t we?’” Nomination forms can be found on the Institute’s Web site, auburn.edu/womensleadership. Once nominated, the student is notified and must fill out the application. Nominations and applications are due Dec. 15, 2009. ##### Contact Information: Chelsea Quinlan, Director of Communications Cell: (256)-783-9530 E-mail: caq0001@auburn.edu The Women’s Leadership Institute College of Liberal Arts 2227 Haley Center Auburn, AL 36849
