“The Adventures of Captain Fanatic” is a fast-paced animated tribute to sports fans: part spoof, part fantasy, and total fun. Because the best game action is with the fans, in the stands, at the sports watering hole, and in the parking lot, cheering ‘til they swallow their own tongues. Chalkmaster sidewalk murals are drawn with no ordinary chalk: this stuff’s from a supercharged meteor from planet Sporticus. When Chalkmaster arrives in town for the ‘big game’, he draws cartoon mascot Captain Fanatic and the spirit of sports fanaticism comes alive, embodied in a passerby. Interplanetary liaison Statsman and his Sportican mascot guests prepare Captain to know the team and its fan base before unleashing Fanatic to whip up a pre-game frenzy. Still, despite best efforts, by the time game day rolls around, something routinely goes wrong. Will the Captain arrive in time to cheer the game without utter disaster striking at the talons of Booger Baddie or the hooves of King Scalper? And what if Bandwagon Billybob has influenced the vote? Naturally one BetBet Boy will lose cash while the other does the chicken dance, but we can’t let doneros keep us from universal brotherhood. The fact is, when it comes to sports, everyone has an opinion. If you want to know the zeitgeist of a town, then get to know its sports fans. What else can pull a whole city together, all ages, cultures, musical interests and shoe sizes like ‘the game’! So who’s ready to kick some butt?!

Captain Fanatic, self-appointed Sports Ambassador to the World, circles the globe to remind people of how great it is to love the game. Face painted and cape flowing with team spirit, he bounds into town with Statsman at the helm of the Fanaticmobile, ready to supercharge each new city with fanatic power. Fanatic power is bigger than sports. But when a man finds his calling, he must answer, and so he joined the ranks of mascots across the galaxy. Trivialized here, mascots are practically deified on planet Sporticus, where superfans are wise and powerful beings. Captain Fanatic maintains his humility, enjoying life’s simple pleasures like basking in the glow of a laud cheer. Statsman is an intergalactic emissary who’s here to deliver Captain Fanatic to sporting events Earth-wide and provide safe haven for his Sportican guests. His slick and fullyloaded Fanaticmobile contains a comprehensive datatbase of all things sports-related. Here he retrieves information with lightning speed to prepare Captain Fanatic for each new sports mission. Statsman is the calm and subdued numbers man to Fanatic’s live-wire ‘madcapery’ who ensures Fanatic is chauffeured in a timely manner, no small feat when Fanatic is in his post-game delirium.

Askit is a fledgling mascot, also under Statsman’s care, to learn from Mascat’s observations on Earth sports. In the future, Sporticus plans to introduce its proposed interplanetary sports leagues, but not until Captain Fanatic can motivate enough fan energy to match Sporticus’ directives. Askit is a vocal and highly inquisitive natural collector, who like Mascat, thinks humans are for climbing. If for now the world thinks Captain Fanatic is just ‘a guy who really likes stuffed toys’, that’s a sacrifice he’s willing to make, as long as the critters return his wallet.

CPT.FANATIC BOOK FINAL.indd 4

Mascat’s a fluffy cat-dog hybrid with a permanentlycute facial expression, a benign alien mascot from the planet Sporticus, evolved to suit the sports-dominated world culture there, with an innate knowledge of various games and crowd-charming finesse. Mascat’s on a field trip here, along for the ride with Captain Fanatic, who’s considered a ‘sentient being’ by Sporticans, to study how humans react to sports. Mascat has become Statsman’s pet, but more importantly his best information resource, telepathing information on whatever sport, team and city Stats requests.

Artsy Fartsy is Claire, a chic, spoilt, high-cultured world traveler who disdains sports and the people that love them. Naturally, wherever Captain Fanatic is, he and the fans he incites seem to disrupt the sophisticated scenes she gravitates to. Artsy is from the same town as Fanatic, but she’s not yet aware of how their stories connect. An heiress, she’s devised a phone-in job for herself while she lives off her dividends. Artsy’s posse are Viola and Princess, two more reserved souls who share her love of preening and posing globally. Viola is a metrosexual classical music aficionado, on Artsy’s payroll, who would live in a relaxation tank with room service if only he could. He chooses Artsy’s outfits, selects spa services, carries handbags, and slips Artsy her ‘personal’ opinions on cinema, theatre, fine dining and pop politics. He ensures the maitre d’s that they’re on the VIP guest list, and he’ll gladly supply it for them on request.

Princess is a rich girl who finds menu-reading exhausting, so travels with Artsy, who by sheer force of ego, gets them from point A to point B with no effort on Princess’ part. She knows Viola and Artsy from her conservatory days and still plays her triangle from time to time. Princess is always on the lookout for exciting ways to block out Artsy’s ranting: cold medications, iPods, jeweled earplugs, and the loud rustling of designer clothing ‘off-the-rack’. Sports? The guys are cute, but too bad their eyes are on the ball and not her.

Bandwagon Billybob is a well-meaning but easily swayed overall-clad fan who whole-heartedly believes his team is the best. Until he believes it sucks composte, all according to the loud throngs on the bandwagons that keep whizzing by in the big city. Constantly nursing injuries from jumping on and off the bandwagon, he’s worse for wear and tear but hell-bent on wherever he’s jumping. “Woo!” Crutches, slings, casts and bandages are the Xtreme price he pays for the irresistible buzz of matching the zeitgeist of the moment.

Mr. Gigolo remembers Fanatic when he was his shy college roommate halfway out of the womb and directly into a textbook, and Gig was Lucky GiGalo, a giant zit in high-tops with a popular “bookie” business and satellite TV. GiGalo coaxed him to a college football game with tales of “tuba song” and witnessed his insane transformation into Captain Fanatic, full-time sports fan. Gigolos smooth moves attract the ladies wherever he goes, “nome same?”

The Sexolettes are Mr. Gigolo’s favorite party chanteuses, living it up on the G Bus whenever possible, and tempting Captain Fanatic from his beloved sports, or trying to.

LaDiva Sexton is a spectacularly flirty champion chandelier swinger (also overhead air ducts, light posts, suspension bridges, wherever people can look up her skirt. A selfproclaimed Sexolette, sure, but don’t call her “Sex” unless you’re begging to be audited. (Not the kind of kinky you had in mind.)

CPT.FANATIC BOOK FINAL.indd 6

L’Ohan Behold is a self-described successful systems analyst, (ie. she already has your credit card number) As long as the Cristalle flows, your secret’s safe with O, making Gigolo a close personal friend. She loves you and lots of people, but don’t go getting jealous or she’ll destroy your hard drive.

Leticia Vavavoom (“Lets” to her friends) is a dangerous beauty: a giddy yoga instructor and registered masseuse. You’d be amazed what the human body can do. Think you’re getting a free massage? Call your HMO. Her “Vavavoom Nerve Pinch” is frightening, but when she likes you, the purrrks are intoxicating.

Mediamen is the ‘voice of sports’, two oldschool microphones that when plugged into each other become dueling commentators on whatever sport is being played in their vicinity. Mild-mannered and diplomatic Mike, and irascible and myopic Mike present their point-counterpoint views and try not to blow a fuse or disconnect themselves in a scrum. Mediamen pays tribute to the most prominent commentator voices of the sport being highlighted. Everyone’s got an opinion! (Just don’t blow a fuse.)

The Bet-Bet Boyz are Chunsky and Sooer, loud-mouthed inveterate gambling buddies who park it at MacMeyers’ Bar. Their black java and brewskie-fuelled rapid-betting is enough to give Japanese kids seizures: “next sports pro to fail a drug test”, “key of the next belch they hear”, “‘mystery brand’ of the nachos”, “number of times the ref was dropped on his head as a child”. Since their first bet: “why the grade two room goldfish isn’t moving”, they know when to razz and when to call ‘mutual debt forgiveness’, which ain’t on rent day.

King Scalper’s a deal-making ‘event-going enabler’, which means if you’re able to pay whatever he demands for game tickets, you’re in, but you might not be able to afford to leave when it’s over. King’s a permanent fixture outside of any game venue, dodging authorities and luring us with his twisted love call: “Tickets, tickets”. If he looks a little hefty, it’s just that his pants are his cashbox. The target of the collective’s ire, he’ll take any attention over none at all: your taunts let him know he’s alive. He’s also a masochist.

Bunny DaGroop, a wide-eyed fan of anyone even remotely connected to ‘the team’, she knows everything about you. Her autograph book needs a-fillin’, and who can resist her sweet little face? Bunny’s collectibles are vast and bizarre: a vial of linebacker’s sweat, legions of bobbleheads, potato chips that resemble players’ derrieres. Camera phone in hand, she’s poised to sprint fopoised, she’ll sprint for s keep winding up poised, she’s quite the sprinter when she spots an opportunity. Keep her out of the locker room unless you want to grow a new farm team.

Melissa Homefield is a popular server at MacMeyers’, a busy sports bar and sometime hangout for pro athletes. When not sassing the regulars, she’s beating them at foozball, poker, pool and trivia, hackysack, darts and air hockey. Drunks salute her when she ‘cuts them off’ for the night, and sports celebs give her props for being so cool. After hours, she’s partial to superfan purists like Fanatic who love ‘the game’ like she does. Bar patrons who call her Lobstergirl (‘best tail in town’) don’t know what she adds to their drinks.

Chalkmaster is a chalk artist who works on sidewalks around the country. Chalkmaster never speaks. He always appears working on a chalk mural of Captain Fanatic, with variations in the murals according to the episodic theme. His chalk dust has magic qualities, animating his artwork to life, as he does with Captain Fanatic. He is not entirely aware of his powers, however; he only senses a need to adjust his artwork and proceeds accordingly. Chalkmaster’s only interest is in completing another mural.
