Capstone International Center Welcomes Dr. Teresa Wise as Associate Provost for International Education Capstone International Center is proud to announce the selection of Dr. Teresa Wise as its new Associate Provost for International Education. Born and raised in Alabama, Dr. Wise’s move to the University of Alabama is both a homecoming and a career move. Dr. Wise comes to CIC with an extensive background in the field of international education with professional experience in Study Abroad, Teaching English as a Second Language, and International Student and Scholar Services.

Teresa Wise

Dr. Wise is an honor graduate of Vanderbilt University, a graduate of the University of Georgia Law School, and a member of the Georgia Bar. In addition, Dr. Wise holds a Master’s Degree in Applied Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second Language from Georgia State University and a PhD in Language Education with a specialty in teaching additional or second languages from the University of Georgia. Prior to her appointment at the University of Alabama, Dr. Wise served as the Executive Director of International Programs at Clemson University. Under her stewardship, Clemson significantly increased the number of faculty-led programs as well as the number of students studying abroad with a 67% increase in students studying abroad from 2006-07 to 2010-11. In addition to her extensive knowledge of international programming, Dr. Wise brings to her role at UA experience in international student and scholar services. During transitions of personnel at Clemson University, Dr. Wise assumed responsibility for and oversaw the J-1 exchange visitor program as well as the issuance of immigration documents for degree-seeking students. Dr. Wise worked closely with international services staff and served as a mentor for new international services advisors. Concerning the role of an International Services office, Dr. Wise states, “As an attorney, I am quite familiar with the need for strict regulatory compliance in this area, but as an educator, I understand that the main mission of the office is to serve students, faculty, and staff and to support the goals of the university.” Prior to her position at Clemson University, Dr. Wise served as the Director of International Programs for the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS), an Atlanta based consortium of sixteen liberal arts institutions. Additionally, Dr. Wise taught English as a second language, sociolinguistics, and research and writing skills both in the U.S. and overseas for several years. Capstone International Center is proud to have Dr. Teresa Wise as its new Associate Provost for International Education. She brings to the position a unique educational background and work experience. About her new role at UA, Dr. Wise states, “I am eager to have the opportunity to meet new challenges, to serve The University of Alabama, and in collaboration with all its units, to help advance the University to even higher levels of achievement in the international arena.” Dr. Wise may be reached at cic@ua.edu and welcomes your comments and suggestions.
