Over the past 5 years Capita Symonds Birmingham Office has successfully delivered over 2,000 social housing dwellings across Birmingham and the West Midlands for a range of Housing Associations and Local Authorities We are extremely proud to have formed part of Birmingham City Council’s Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust (BMHT) new build housing programme that won the overall prize at the 2011 UK Housing Awards as well as the ‘Grand Prix’ and ‘Best use of Housing in Regeneration’ categories at the ‘Regeneration and Renewals’ Awards 2011. Capita Symonds was appointed as Project and Cost Managers on the new £193m Library of Birmingham and The REP Theatre transformation project. The project is a central part of Birmingham City Council’s 20-year, £17bn ‘Big City Plan’ programme and will deliver flagship facilities for culture in the city centre, supporting social and economic regeneration and encouraging tourism. Designed by Dutch Architects Mecanoo, the new Library will comprise of 10 floors, 9 floors above ground and one below ground, and is expected to attract up to 10,000 visitors per day. The development will also include a new flexible circa 300 seat studio theatre which will be shared by both the library and the adjoining Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Capita Symonds was originally appointed to manage the preparation of the complex business case for the project, before being selected as project and cost managers. Since then the team has led an international design team competition that resulted in Mecanoo’s appointment, and an OJEU selection of the delivery contractor for which Carillion was selected.

As a centre for knowledge, the new Library will be able to use the power of information, learning and culture to change people’s lives, developing their skills, knowledge and potential. The new library will use emerging technologies to make the wide range of resources and services more accessible, to more people. The new Library of Birmingham is due to open to the public in July 2013.

Capita Symonds provided Development Monitoring on behalf of Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets Property and Calthorpe Estates for the £20m landmark Calthorpe House development. The 107,044 sq ft of Grade A sustainable office accommodation has been built to the highest specification and designed with the environment and energy efficiency in mind. In every aspect of its design and construction, Calthorpe House was conceived as a building that would exceed current legislation for eco-friendly developments. With a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, a B rated Energy Performance Certificate and significant annual energy savings, Calthorpe House heralds a new future for commercial office space in Birmingham. Located at a prominent gateway to the city, the eight storey building includes car park and landscape zones and floor plates up to 22,000sqft. Capita Symonds works included completion of initial commercial review, site visits, monthly progress reports

incorporating expenditure, programme and risk assessments and project completion evaluation review.

Capita Symonds was appointed by Caterpillar (UK) to provide full Design services and Project and Cost Management services for the delivery of their new £2.5m visitors centre at their UK based Headquarters in Desford Leicestershire. Capita Symonds worked closely with Caterpillar (UK) to develop the scheme from conception through to feasibility, completion of site surveys, procurement of contractors and construction of the new facility. The new state of the art, flagship visitor centre has created a sophisticated platform within Europe for Caterpillar to showcase their latest products and machinery in an environment that reflects the core qualities of the Caterpillar brand. The new visitor centre with a steel and glass interior incorporates a mezzanine floor level overlooking the product showroom. Large glazed panels are used to create an open and spacious environment with enough room to welcome groups of up to 55 people.

The new visitor centre also provides modern office and conferencing facilities incorporating the latest technology.

Capita Symonds has worked with RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital over a number of years, successfully completing projects of varying size, value and complexity. We have provided a range of services including Lead Consultancy, Project Management and Quantity Surveying. Recent projects include: • Management of a 6 Facet estates review and development of an Estates Strategy for the Hospital. • New £300K Helipad project including aviation consultation, specialist lighting, covered walkway, external works and new helicopter landing base. • Completion of £300k Privacy and Dignity works within various patient ward areas. • New £5m modular build Short Stay Surgical unit, complete with 4 orthopaedic operating theatres and associated clinical/non-clinical areas. • New £1.2m Theatre Sterile Supplies unit including conversion and extension of existing areas to accommodate the new facility.

• Refurbishment of existing clinical and non clinical areas to accommodate the relocation and reconfiguration of existing services and staff. • Demolition of existing redundant Nurses Home building. • Construction of a new £2m Main Entrance facility complete with visitor support services, waiting areas, retail units, café, toilets, offices and conference rooms. • Construction of new £0.6m Visitors Car Park facility

Capita Symonds was recently appointed to provide Project Management, Employers Agent and Quantity Surveyor Services on a £11m new build warehouse development for Sports Direct. The project will deliver a new 37,000m2 warehouse facility in Shirebrook providing storage and associated office facilities witihin the development. Capita Symonds has worked closely with Sports Direct to create a tailored project for the warehouse, making sure the unique occupier objectives and specific business operation needs are met. Capita Symonds has fully managed a tender process for the procurement of contractors and is carrying out on-site surveys prior to construction and has adapted the project plan to provide further storage capacity to accommodate the recent growth in Sports Directs internet based point of sales. The new facility will be built with 3 floors with the first floor providing high rack storage facilities and a mezzanine level above. The warehouse is designed to provide a state of the art storage facility and is set to achieve a BREEAM “very good” rating upon completion.

Capita Symonds is currently working with the YMCA West Bromwich District as part of their £10m Western Gateway redevelopment proposals. Providing, Employers Agent, Project Management and Cost Management and CDM Coordinator services Capita Symonds has managed the production of the project in accordance with the clients functionality requirements, maintaining a live site throughout the duration of works and successfully engaging with key stakeholders at all stages, including those neighbouring the sites development. Phase 1 of the redevelopment is associated with providing a £1m new build Community Hub facility consisting of 3 large rooms built on separate levels which provide modern and spacious facilities as well as a new nursery on the ground floor and youth centre on the first floor. The project included the demolition of existing residential properties to accommodate the new building. The project successfully achieved practical completion in September 2011. Capita Symonds is currently working with the YMCA with respect to the planning of Phase 2 of the redevelopment which

is to include the £9m expansion of the YMCAs existing facilities enhancing the Public Cafe, Gymnasium and meeting spaces and providing office, training and enterprise centres to be accessed by residents and public. The core element of the scheme will be the creation of 89 one bedroom residential units. Detailed planning consent has been secured and the project is currently awaiting formal funding approval.

Providing Cost Management Services Capita Symonds has worked closely with the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) Birmingham on the replacement and upgrading of existing heating and ventilation systems serving exhibition halls to improve thermal conditions and support the replacement of R22 refrigeration HCFC gas. The scope of works included the renewal of existing roof mounted air handling systems, introduction of new internal gas fired radiant panel systems, upgrading of existing roof mounted electrical distribution systems/sub stations and reinstatement of control systems, etc. Due to the nature and logistical challenges of the project, the works are required to be completed during the site’s 12 week summer recess period, increasing the need to deliver projects on time. To date Capita Symonds have successfully completed 4 phases of the project on time and within budget with works taking place over 4 summer periods. Design works are now to commence on Phase 5 with the further replacement of 13 units.
