WINTER/SPRING 2020
ON THE COVER MEDICAL ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT STUDENT, SIMON BOCIO
DIRECTOR'S NOTES I am honored to join the Cape Coral Technical College family, along with our new Assistant Director Ms. Gina Sabiston. Ms. Sabiston and I most recently worked at South Fort Myers High School with some of our area’s most successful career and technical academies. I believe my wide-range of leadership experience with both traditional and non-traditional schools in Chicago and Lee County will provide unique perspective as we look to build upon current successes while also keeping an eye on the future. Cultivating a positive school culture and providing top-notch customer service are amongst our top priorities. Our highly-qualified staff plays a key role in student success – from enrollment to financial aid to instruction to job placement. Our “Career in a Year” model prepares students for employment through hands-on classroom learning and the majority of our programs include on-the-job internship placement and clinical training with local businesses and healthcare providers. We’re excited to launch our new Optometric Assisting program this spring and look forward to the possibility of expanding our offerings in the near future. We are exploring skilled trades programs such as welding, auto service, marine mechanic technology, and HVAC. To that end, we will continue to expand partnerships within the community with local employers as well as workforce developmentfocused organizations such as CareerSource Southwest Florida and the FutureMakers Coalition. Our Strategic Goals for the next five years will focus on the following:
1. Increasing overall program 2. 3. 4. 5.
completion rates Increasing the number of industry certifications earned Increasing overall job placement rates Adding new programs that are responsive to regional economic development needs Improvement and possible expansion of our physical campus

have been one of the lucky students to have Anthony go through your enrollment process at the beginning, but if you were not, fear not Anthony will be meeting with you to help you with your search for your career after you have completed your program. Anthony Rivera is a graduate from the University of South Florida where he received his degree in Communications. Anthony is currently in his first year at Cape Coral Technical College as the Career Specialist. Anthony has been an employee of the School District of Lee County for the past 5 years. His work experience includes multiple years of business to business sales, hosting of workshops and networking events, athletic coaching, IT support and customer service. While an athletic coach for 4 years, Anthony took it upon himself to team up with his high school athletes and help each student create a resume while assisting the athletes with their first job search. After his 4 years of employment at Cypress Lake High School, which is part of the School District of Lee County, Anthony was selected for the role of Career Specialist at Cape Coral Technical College. In the role as a Career Specialist, Anthony assists students in job placement. Before the job placement journey begins, Anthony preps each student with one-onone time by reviewing their current resume, or creating an entire new resume to have it presentable for the future employer. Anthony also assists the students with multiple one-on-one mock interview sessions and tracks the progress of each student. Anthony is currently married to Krista, who is a middle school language arts teacher. Both Anthony and Krista welcomed their first baby boy into this world on August 22, 2019. Anthony is honored and excited for what the future holds for both him and his family and is honored to be your Career Specialist at Cape Coral Technical College.

y education at Cape Coral Technical College (CCTC) began the moment I came into the Medical Administrative Specialist (MAS) classroom. The first impression was a lasting one. The teacher’s smile was contagious and her heartfelt welcoming to new students, was and continues to be an inspiration in the classroom. When I started this course, I felt overwhelmed by the curriculum given by Ms. Lemos (the instructor). The first couple of days were hectic, but with Ms. Lemos’ encouragement, and can-do attitude, the students survived the first week. She is truly a person who wants all of us to achieve the goals set forth in the class. She is there to help us get through and make sure we are on track for great success as a Medical Administrative Assistant. I was feeling awkward when I came into the class, as I am the only male in the program. However, everyone made me feel welcome and part of the team. After serving in the United States Air Force for 20 years, and as a Veteran of the first Gulf War (Desert Storm), and many worldwide assignments, it is refreshing to know that age and disability has not limited me in the next chapter of my life.

In this course, I am learning new skills that will propel me into the workforce once again. Once you graduate as Medical Administrative Assistant, there is no limit to where you can work. The skills that you learn in this vocational training will ready you for a brighter future. Whether you want to work in a medical setting, a law office, state or

government office, you are groomed to overcome all challenges you will face in the field. If you love helping people plus have a compassionate heart, then working at a medical office will be very rewarding to you and also will make the greatest impact to your community.
If you’re intrigued by the dynamic role of a medical administrative assistant, you’re probably curious about the education and training needed to become one. The good news is that, unlike many other indemand healthcare professions, it won’t take years of schooling to qualify. In fact, most medical administrative assistant jobs don’t even require a degree. You can earn a Medical Administrative Assistant Certificate in as few as ten months. With courses covering medical terminology, medical law and ethics, medical administration technology and customer service in healthcare, and a host of other training such as keyboarding, formatting business letters, telephone etiquette and filing. In addition, the program prepares you for your Microsoft Office Certification and CMAA Certification (optional). Also, I am learning the discipline to pay attention to details. In the military, the methodology taught is vigorous, but you have no autonomy. At Cape Coral Technical College, you get the syllabus, you follow sets of instructions, assignments from the instructor, and you have the autonomy in keeping track of your daily in class activities. If you don’t

know how to manage your time, then this program will definitely sharpen your skills from a mediocre time management person to an outstanding time management professional. You’ll be well equipped to step into your new role. Ms. Lemos teaches you how to write the perfect resume, cover letter, help you create a portfolio and prepare you for any interview where you will hear these three words “YOU ARE HIRED”. She helps you prepare to enter the workforce with real hands on experience. You will get the privilege to have an internship where you get to practice all the skills you are learning. Some of the many companies that partner with Cape Coral Technical College are Lee Health Care System, Millennium Physician Groups, 21st Century Oncology, Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida etc., and if you love Military Veterans like me, you can get your internship at the Lee County VA Health Care System. Once you graduate from this world class education your duties may be quite diverse. You will have a myriad of opportunities to work in diverse businesses, from medical offices to law offices.
“The Medical Administrative Specialist program has truly changed my life. I didn’t realize when I enrolled in this program the extent of the incredibly valuable and transferable skills I would develop! With the knowledge I have gained from the MAS program, I feel prepared for my future career in the WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYING ABOUT medical field and a path that I am MEDICAL ADMINSITRATIVE SPECIALIST: proud of.” ~ Megan C. Whether you are a recent graduate or graduated decades ago, this is a great program in a growing medical field. Follow my advice because I am a dad, grandpa, and retired military Veteran; I say “It's time to go back to school!” .....
“I chose the Medical Administrative Specialist program because of the diversity and opportunities within this field. This program has given me confidence to go out into the workforce knowing that I have gained the skills that I need to be able to advance in my career. There are endless directions that I could go with the knowledge I have learned. Deciding to go back to school was a decision that didn’t come easy. I knew it would drastically change my day-to-day life and be very challenging. But, I’m so happy I made this decision. It has been truly rewarding.” ~ Jessica V.
“In such a short time that I have been in the Medical Administrative Specialist program it has been a challenge for me, but at the same time I have learned many skills. First, I thank God for the opportunity to grow professionally, and second, my instructor Ms. Lemos for all her positive energy in addition to the hands-on activities I learn every day. I recommend this program for anyone that wants to start a new career!” ~ Walessa B.
How important are Medical Administrative Assistants? Well, you are the gatekeeper of the medical front desk. As the front desk person, you are the first and last person who will come into contact with patients and prospective customers. Your friendly smile and an empathetic personality will set the stage for the rest of the day. Checking patients in is an important duty for the medical administration team. You are responsible for many tasks that help keep the medical office running smoothly. WINTER/SPRING 2020

ooking for a course that brings something new to the table every day? Or maybe you want to get out of your comfort zone and experiment with different types of technology? Well, Electronic Technology is the course you are looking for! I can tell you from experience, that this is a class that will make coming to school exciting. When I first arrived in this class I was afraid of all the complex looking machines around me, not even a month later I’m already making circuits and running the very machines that, at first, intimidated me. The beginning of the class leads you through the basics of using a multimeter, an oscilloscope, an AF generator, and a base unit to complete training modules. These modules teach you everything you’re going to need to know about technology from DC Fundamentals to Microprocessor Circuits. Moving on to the hands on part of the class, you will first begin with building small circuits from a few components and soldering/desoldering components from a circuit board. Not long after beginning the class you quickly move onto building circuits with 120 volts and micro-soldering components onto circuit boards. You really get to learn how everyday appliances work, such as computers, TV’s, and even simple things like phone charger. The knowledge you gain from this class not only helps you learn how the appliances around you work, but helps you to make a great future career out of it. We’ve had quite a few events in our classroom, but one of the coolest ones I’ve been to was the training for the PLC. This small training was run by Greg Schuman, an employee at Bluegrass Educational Technologies, who went over the
TECHNOLOGY
complexities and simplicities that went into programming a PLC, as well as teaching us what a PLC actually does. Simply, a PLC is a “Programmable Logic Controller” that is used in most machinery nowadays. Many different types of industries use PLC’s, such as: manufacturing, travel, aerospace, etc. The PLC is an important part in machine work, because it allows the worker to program the machine to do a specified task. The training module that we received is for a traffic light, the PLC/training board, and the software to make the programs ourselves. After learning about the PLC and all of the possibilities that come with it, I decided to take on the learning process for this. The kit also included work books, which were very helpful in the process of learning the ins and outs of a programmable logic controller. The most important step with the PLC is the software that tells the PLC what to do. The software we use is called RS Logix Micro, which is a tool used to design and implement ladder programs for processors (PLC). We use things such as nor, nand, as well as and/or statements to tell the PLC what tasks we want it to do when it is put under a certain condition. Once we make a program on the software, we download it to the PLC training board to test out our program. From there, we can
THE KNOWLEDGE YOU GAIN FROM THIS CLASS NOT ONLY HELPS YOU LEARN HOW THE APPLIANCES AROUND YOU WORK, BUT HELPS YOU TO MAKE A GREAT FUTURE CAREER OUT OF IT plug and play the training board into the traffic light to see exactly how the program would look. The programmable logic controller is the future of technology, allowing us to further see how machines work and make productivity at an all-time high. Electronic technologies has opened up so many opportunities for not only me, but every student that has taken this class. Some students are able to go straight to work after graduating, or some even get job opportunities while in the class. We’ve had three students so far hired at VR/Wesson, which is a manufacturing company that makes small tool bits of all sorts. There were also students that has gone to work for a company called Automatic Door & Gates, which service many items: access systems, commercial gate systems, and so much more! From all the students that are leading early and successful lives right out of Cape Coral Tech, I think that we can all agree that this class is definitely worth the time and effort. t Cape Coral Technical College, we understand the importance of community. As a Lee County School, we rely on the support from residents, council members, and the state. As a trade school, we survive on the support of the businesses and the people who represent them by employing our students, as well as providing valuable industry information to keep our programs relevant and up to date. Our mission here at CCTC speaks to our commitment in providing quality students for the various industries we support. To fulfill this mission many of CCTC’s programs actively volunteer in the community, not only to develop their craft, but also to build the student’s character. Volunteering offers students an opportunity to develop life skills that will help them throughout their careers, such as communication skills, time management, professionalism, and accountability. In the Dental Assisting program, we value taking an active role in our community. The students are encouraged to participate in various areas of community outreach throughout the county. Each class is required to do educational field trips to provide oral hygiene education to various schools. These trips teach the importance of brushing and flossing to kindergarteners with fun songs and dancing, how your diet choices and seeing a dentist for checkups is important to 3rd and 4th graders, and the proper way to keep healthy teeth as well as the impact oral hygiene has on your health and your social situations to special needs high schoolers. The dental assistants develop skits, games, and interactive lessons to teach the students. They also take turns volunteering on their own time at a local non-profit dental clinic, Project Dentist Care. The students are able to participate with hands on experience, meet a variety of local dentists, as well as 11

help residents in need. Each student is accountable to the degree at which they learn, we can provide the information, the direction, and the skills, but they must take an active role if they want the best result. Committing their own time to master their skills shows great dedication from the students. These students often excel in the work environment and step into leadership roles. Each November the students volunteer for a free dental day hosted by Lee Dental Care. Dentistry from the Heart provides free dental services to anyone. Dental professionals from around the county participate in the

event, treating over 200 people in one day. The students gain a wealth of knowledge at events like this. The assistants work in triage, take vitals, obtain medical history information, participate in room disinfection and preparation, as well as patient care, and instrument sterilization. The day is busy, the pace is fast, and the experience is unique to anything else they will see in their career. Prior students loved their experience with this event. The students were filled with joy and excitement as they helped patients who were so appreciative of the services they received and may not have been able to afford them otherwise. The
students became so invested in their jobs, they did not want to leave when their shift was over. Each one commenting on how it fueled their desire to graduate so they could help patients every day. Experiences like these helped them to understand why we, as dental professionals and instructors, do what we do and why we are so invested in the dental community. In November 2019, we joined 12 of our students at this event. They were very excited to take part in this day and were eager to learn new things. We have also joined with Hearts & Homes for Veterans, a nonprofit organization developed to aid Veterans in getting back on their feet. Hearts & Homes is in the process of equipping a dental and medical room to start treating Veterans. Our students will volunteer with this organization as they assist with the veterans need for dental services. As instructors, it is very important to introduce our students to these types of events. The students gain much more than technical skills, they learn compassion, empathy, and patience. They feel the satisfaction of hard work for a good cause, seeing the importance of their role in the big picture of community service. We can teach the importance of these things in the classroom, but until the student experiences it for themselves, they don’t understand. Therefore, we support our community events and encourage our students to take an active part in them. Not only as an investment in their education but also in their character. As our students graduate, we want them to continue volunteering and being involved in the community. As instructors, we strive to graduate the best dental assistants in the county. To achieve this, our goal is to develop respectful, professional, contributing members of the community who take pride in their profession and themselves.
