ON THE COVER PRACTICAL NURSING STUDENTS JOSHUA STEPHENS & YEMISI SMITH

.....

The December 2015 edition of the publication, College Measures, compared the median wages of students graduating from various postsecondary institutions. Florida Gulf Coast University’s median firstyear earnings of graduates with Bachelor’s degrees equaled $33,848. The statewide median first-year earnings of graduates with Bachelor’s degrees equaled $33,718. In comparison, the median first-year earnings of Cape Coral and Fort Myers Technical College graduates was $35,524!

DIRECTOR'S NOTES For many students, earning a degree from a four-year college or university is not a realistic goal. For others, they found college to be lacking in hands-on learning or were left with a degree that does not lead to lucrative employment. Cape Coral Technical College students earn industry certifications and licensures that lead to high-paying jobs in rewarding careers right here in Lee County! Did you know that the average time it takes a student to complete a bachelor’s degree is 54 months, and 39 months for an associate’s degree? Technical college programs range from 2.5 months to 20 months in length. The completion, placement and licensure rates of Florida’s technical colleges last year were 85%, 86% and 93% respectively! Education at a technical college yields a great return on investment! Cape Coral Technical College and Fort Myers Technical College operate as part of the School District of Lee County and are accredited by the Council on Occupational Education. We are postsecondary technical colleges that offer more than 45 career and technical education programs that lead to industry certification and licensures in a multitude of fields. With small class sizes, low tuition costs and hands-on training, technical colleges provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to enter and advance in high paying jobs. Most programs can be completed within two semesters and include careers in health, business, human services, information technology, manufacturing, transportation and public safety.

Another very important consideration in choosing a school is the amount of student loan debt a student will be expected to incur. Students graduating from a four-year college average $40,000 in student loan debt. Cape Coral Technical College student loan debt averages $0! Not only are our programs low in cost but they also qualify for the following financial aid sources: Federal Pell Grants, Florida Prepaid College Fund, Veteran’s Educational Benefits, Florida Bright Futures Scholarships, CareerSource Southwest Florida and Vocational Rehabilitation. Lee County Technical Colleges work with community leaders to ensure we provide postsecondary learning opportunities that meet the needs of the local workforce. Our colleges are able to respond quickly to business and industry needs, and our focus is on job placement and attainment of industry credentials. Because the focus is on students and employers, Florida’s Technical Colleges directly impact economic growth in Florida. Our mission at Cape Coral Technical College is to prepare students for employment by providing quality, technology-oriented education delivered by a professional, caring staff in a positive learning environment. Our faculty and staff are committed to employing our core values; Accountability, Commitment, Respect, Integrity, and Leadership; to accomplish this mission. If you are already a student at Cape Coral Technical College we thank you for placing your trust in us to help you achieve your career goals. Everyone at CCTC cares about you and your future! Thank you,

Judy Johnson

VETERINARY ASSISTING, THE STUDENTS PERSPECTIVE Join a group of individuals with a common passion and interest in the animal field. In this course you will explore many different breeds and species. You will also learn how to tackle simple tasks and measures to maintain your future client’s health and happiness. Different skill sets including toe nail-trims, animal restraint, handling, and bathing techniques. We also cover more advanced skills such as identifying internal and external parasites, preventative medicine such as the importance of vaccines, and proper nutritional diets that may be required by the animal. “One thing I did in the Veterinary Assistant program that I enjoyed was visiting the Lowry Park Zoo. It was exciting to learn about the animal’s maintenance and care. A behind the scenes tour was given by zookeepers, whom were very informational. Seeing an elephant play a harmonica was unreal and something I will never forget. The best part about the tour was being able to get up-close and personal to a rhino. The skin felt like sand paper, which I was not expecting. Going behind the scenes to see what no others can, is a special opportunity. This was a fun experience that I would like to do again!” -Savana Rodriguez “The Veterinary Assisting program is a seven month course that takes you through some of the basics of animal care and nutrition. During that time period you will learn animal restraint, handling and care. The class also takes trips out to places like cattle farms, sanctuaries, and behind the scenes of the zoo. In order to make all this possible students raise money through fundraisers such as dog washes. Before entering the program, volunteering at

your local shelter or humane society would be very beneficial.” -Anaeli De leon-Perez “From volunteering with wolves, to working cattle, handling animals and learning practical skills for the field, we’ve done a lot and we have a lot left to do. Our class is a very involved, hands on experience that is truly unique. If you have a respect for animals and want to work with them but aren’t sure where to start, this might be the right place for you. I have always wanted to work with animals but I had no clue how to get into the field, and the education I’ve received has broadened my horizons and given me a clear path for my own future. In just a few months we’ve covered animal nursing, hematology, parasitology, medical terminology, animal husbandry, nutrition, and the list goes on. Veterinary assisting is a very versatile certification and allows you to work in many different places and is a stepping stone to something great. If you want to take your love of animals and channel it into a career, this is the place to start.“ -Andrew Vaughn Iffland “I highly recommend this program to anyone who is seeking a career in animal medicine. The knowledge we’ve acquired will prepare you for more than just veterinary assisting. There is a mix of book and hands-on skills that are applied on various off-site excursions to all types of facilities. In my personal opinion the professor and program exceeded my expectations and I am truly glad to be a student here!” -Bailey Dilgen

“The veterinary assisting program has proven to be a wholesome and incredible experience. Our mentor, Mrs. Braddock, is full of knowledge and stories of her time as a veterinary technician. In this class you can expect a lot of hard work, granted, there's always a great reward to follow. Field trips to dairy farms, zoos, beef farms, veterinary clinics, and much more are a regular occurrence in our program as our teacher believes in experience over text. Daily, you can expect to see a few dogs, or cats (depending on our mood) in the class to grant hands on experience in practicing the techniques and methods you'll need to succeed as a veterinary assistant. Our experience with Mrs. Braddock guiding this program has been excellent; we are all fully prepared to take on responsibility in a veterinary practice, as any student who is under her wing will be. The atmosphere of our class is more like family than a college class; while our tests are extensive, our work rigorous, and our studies long, we never fail. Those with interest in veterinary medicine will not regret entering this class, especially with Mrs. Braddock leading them.” -Haley Bistline The field of veterinary medicine is very rewarding as a career. Something different is happening every day, sometimes every hour of the day. The student experience here on campus begins with dog and cats, then moving forward to large animal, and exotic medicine. Within the first 3 weeks as a student the hands on experience begins, and does not end until successful completion of the program. -Sherry Braddock, CVT, Instructor

ere at Cape Coral Technical College, we take pride in our students' continued success, not only with the completion of the Practical Nursing program, but their many accomplishments afterwards. Our program is both rigorous and rewarding. The student’s classroom knowledge is obtained through lecture, videos, online educational resources, and textbooks. Learning skills, from simulation and skills check offs, are applied in the clinical setting. It is imperative that our students are prepared for clinical to safely administer medications and perform procedures within the PN scope of practice under the supervision of a nursing instructor. Our students receive many praises from nurses and staff from their clinical sites, such as how helpful, professional, caring, knowledgeable, and their willingness to learn is. We tell our students to treat every day as if they were on a job interview. To succeed, one must put forth commitment and sacrifice. In short, you get what you put into it. In twelve short months, our graduates will enter a profession with endless opportunities. Recently, two of our graduates were recognized and received the 2017 Commitment to Nursing Excellence Awards through Lee Health. Comments made about our students were: “Richard exhibits the core values of Lee Health daily by his commitment, integrity and willingness to support each patient he encounters” and “Shannon is a hardworking and devoted nurse whom the patients love”. One must understand that these two graduates have not been nurses long and were highly recognized out of thousands of Lee Health employees. Other accomplishments from our students has been through their participation by competing in the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) competitions. This year one of our graduates received the gold medal in pathophysiology at the international level. At the regional and state level, our students have received the gold and silver medals. This is an impressive accomplishment since they were competing against large universities such as the University of Florida, Florida State University, Nova Southeastern University, Florida Atlantic University, along with many other schools around the state at the state level. At the international level, competing schools were from Canada, Florida, Hawaii, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah.

HEALTH

Many of our students further their education in nursing and become registered nurses (RNs), nurse educators, and/or Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNPs). The students who are encountered in the workplace always reflect back on their education here at Cape Coral Technical College and are forever grateful. We try to instill in our students the major impact they have and make on another human being. Dr. Seuss once said: “To the world you may be one person; but to one person you may be the world”. Not everyone who enters the medical profession will possess all of the qualities it takes to make an excellent nurse. Nurses should be

WE CAN INSTILL OUR KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCES, BUT IT IS UP TO THE STUDENTS TO DECIDE WHAT KIND OF NURSE THEY WANT TO BE

compassionate, considerate, empathetic, sympathetic, honest, and responsible. A good nurse practices safe care, thinks critically, listens and communicates well with others. Here at school, we can instill our knowledge and experiences, but it is up to the students to decide what kind of nurse they want to be. Our goal is to prepare them for employment and to continue to make a difference. The PN program here at Cape Coral Technical College has been ranked as one of the top 30 LPN programs in the state of Florida, ranking at #5! Currently, our PN program has a 100% pass rate. We believe in Cape Coral Technical College’s values and mission statement and view the school as a small school doing big things.

TECHNOLOGY

M

y first semester in the electronics technology program at Cape Coral Technical College, has not only met, but exceeded my expectations. In the three months I have been in the program, I have been exposed to learning material that I did not expect. My first week in class I was taught how to read and make car audio circuits with more than just some speakers. There are LCD screens, subwoofers, tweeters, and capacitors too. I was surprised at the amount of equipment we had to work with to create many different audio circuits. After the audio circuits, we began to learn about the basics of soldering. We started with removing and testing larger components with basic soldering irons, and have moved on to micro soldering, which utilizes a microscope and a highend soldering station to help remove components that may be only the size of a few grains of sand. Soldering has now become one of my favorite hobbies, and it is great that I can use that hobby in my future career. After a couple of weeks, I began to learn circuits on our Lab-Volt Solar/Wind Energy Training System. I was very excited to learn about the solar and wind energy circuits because I am most interested in solar as my future career endeavor. The module is very versatile. You can make circuits powered only by the solar panel, or directly from the wind turbine. In addition, we’re learning how to control

I WAS SURPRISED AT THE AMOUNT OF EQUIPMENT WE HAD TO WORK WITH

7

and maintain them. Shortly after grasping the ins-and-outs of the training module, we had been given the challenge from Mr. Hart to design and construct an automatic solar powered composter for the culinary program. We are currently constructing it and expect to finish it very soon. Our main classwork is done on the computer through Mindsight Lab-Volt series, which contains many practice boards that pair with modules to learn from, starting from the basics of DC and AC and moving to digital circuits. I find the modules to be very helpful, in that there are many diagrams and moving pictures to show you exactly how things work and why; in addition to allowing you to work at your own pace. I find that this keeps me more focused on the material as I can take my time to make sure that I am comfortable with the material before I move on. A very helpful activity we did was SCORE, which was a professional development workshop. During certain dates we would spend about 2 hours developing skills for interviews like behavior and response. The staff help us build a resume for when we apply for future jobs. After being taught all the skills needed, they had us do a practice interview. We were graded on it and told what we should work on. It was a helpful experience in something that I didn’t have much knowledge about. The electronic technology course helps you expand your understanding not only of technology, but it also helps you with communication

and abilities that you could apply to your future career. The way the class time is divided between hands on learning and online lessons is perfect for making sure that you stay focused without getting tired of staying on a single activity. I also had a great time learning how to work the drones. We learned every aspect of the drone from how to set it up to controlling it. Mr. Hart trains one student on an activity, like flying the drones, and then he would have that student train another student. This way that student gains skills on training other people, which is an important skill to have in the workforce. One of the main focuses in this class is learning to build circuits and perform proper troubleshooting. We start off with simple circuits and as we progress the circuits start getting harder, until we eventually start working with transformers and the breaker box. Even when I’m doing online work I’m still doing hands on work. The online lessons require troubleshooting and measuring voltage, resistance, and current. To measure those things, we are trained on how to use an oscilloscope and digital multimeters. Electronic Technology has turned out to be a great overall experience in which I have developed many useful skills that I will need, not just for work, but to be a better person.

n the dental assisting program here at Cape Coral Technical College, students learn how the dental office runs, starting from the front office, through sterilization and to sitting chairside with the dentist. They learn the many different types of hand instruments, rotary instruments and handpieces the dentist uses and the correct way to transfer these items while assisting the dentist chairside. They learn about anatomy, physiology, tooth morphology, head and neck anatomy, pharmacology, microbiology, infection control, data collection, dental materials, dental specialties and radiology. The students are radiology certified upon graduation. There are several expanded functions the students are taught. Some of these include: clinical charting, polishing clinical crowns, taking alginate impressions, pouring study models, applying dental sealants, placing/ removing dental dams, placing/removing matrix bands, placing/removing retraction cords, placing/removing temporary restorations, applying liners and bases, suture removals, fabricating temporary crowns, removal of excess dental cement. Students also learn about orthodontics and oral surgery, endodontics and periodontics. Students have extensive training in infection control. They learn what should be worn when examining patients and proper PPE (personal protective equipment). How to sterilize instruments. How to load and clean the autoclave. How to seat and dismiss patients. They also learned about HIPAA rules. As a dental assistant, you will have contact with every patient who walks into the dental office, whether it’s by scheduling appointments, taking blood pressure readings or communicating post surgery instructions. Dental assistants can make a positive impact on people’s lives by providing them with quality oral health care and helping them feel more comfortable.

career as dental laws are changing and the role of the assistant is increasing in regards to patient care. There are also many employment opportunities for dental assistants in today's workplace. Dental assistants can choose to work in private practices, insurance companies, federal and state funded health programs, public health departments as well as teaching community colleges or universities. The dental assisting program is 1230 hours in length, which is approximately 11 months long. Of the 1230 hours, 930 of them are spent on campus and the last 300 hours (the externship of the program) are spent in local dental offices where students get the opportunity to

DENTAL ASSISTANTS MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON PEOPLE’S LIVES BY PROVIDING THEM WITH QUALITY ORAL HEALTH CARE

practice the skills they have learned under the supervision of the dentist. The program is approved by the Florida Board of Dentistry. Upon graduation from the program, the students are given a certificate in Expanded Function Dental

Assistants (EFDA) for the state of Florida. This allows the dental assistants to perform duties under the supervision of a dentist and for which formal training is required. An expanded-function dental assistant (EFDA) is a clinical dental assistant who has acquired advanced training in clinical functions that have been approved by the Dental Practice Act within the state in which the EFDA is practicing, provided that he or she has met state requirements for these functions. The students will take the NELDA (National Entry Level Dental Assistant) certification exam prior to graduation. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, and holding a current CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation certification), students are eligible to sit for a certification exam given by Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). Examinations are given in several specialty areas such as; assisting, practice management, oral surgery, and certified orthodontic assistant. Some states also offer certification for a registered dental assistant (RDA), which is a licensed credential. An RDA must graduate from an ADA-accredited dental assisting program, must pass a comprehensive written and clinical examination, and maintain his or her license on an annual basis. Many states require evidence of additional education for advanced functions and mandate completion of a written or clinical examination that is given by the state licensing agency. The Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) has assembled a comprehensive list of current legislative rulings for the certified legal functions that is permitted for each state. In order to know what your state requires as a dental assistant or to know what is permitted you can go to www.danb.org.

Students are also taught employability and professionalism skills. Soft skills are the personal attributes you need to succeed in the workplace. Regardless of the job you're applying for, you need at least some soft skills. They are taught how to effectively communicate with dentists and team members as well as the patients. They also learn how to write a resume and present themselves for an interview. Dental assisting is becoming an exciting WINTER/SPRING 2018

HOSPITALITY

T

he Cosmetology Program here at Cape Coral Technical College has greatly expanded since classes resumed in July. With the introduction of a Barbering Program, taught by Mrs. Stephanie Lewandowski, and the expansion of class size for Cosmetology, taught by Mrs. Cristina Almadovar, the program is thriving with students excited to learn. However, the program also has seven senior members who are ready to graduate and move on into the real world. These seven students have been working diligently towards their graduation dates, some in December 2017 before the holidays and others at the beginning of January 2018 due to the impact of Hurricane Irma in September. For some, this program has come as a career change. After working for years with a trucking company in Pennsylvania, Elizabeth Ritter, known as Liz by fellow students and clients alike, moved to Florida and started the program in January 2017. She will be graduating in December 2017 and has enjoyed the comprehensive learning experience that the school has offered her in pursuit to fulfill a lifelong dream. The ‘real world’ experience that Cape Coral Technical College’s salon floor provides has granted students an invaluable learning environment. Other students have harbored a lifelong infatuation for all things Cosmetology and have found a way to utilize those passions here. One of these students is Briana Daves. Briana has already secured employment with Salon Alverez here in

Cape Coral. She is currently a receptionist but will move into a stylist position after her completion of the program. Moreover, she has found the program to be fun and engaging in ways she never imagined it could be. Having expected the boring basics that students learn as foundational building blocks to encompass the entirety of the program, Brianna has often found herself pleasantly surprised by each of the guest speakers who bring new, sometimes strange, techniques into the classroom. Katelynn Alexander also holds this lifelong infatuation. Having first attended school for becoming a teacher she realized that she was truly enthusiastic about Cosmetology, not classroom teaching. She has called the program “fun, energetic and [that she] has a lot of amazing memories”. She started attending classes in January and has been going strong especially now in these last few weeks, not letting up on her salon services and making sure she still expands upon the knowledge she has already gained. Katelynn also had this to say about the program, “I really do recommend this program if you have a passion for hair, nails and skin. The two instructors explain things very well until you get the idea." Students like Amanda Denney and Kristi Preston have found that the program offers them a better way to provide for their families. Amanda remembers her first days in the program with fondness. She “was very nervous [but] everyone welcomed [her] with open arms”. Kristie has seen the program as a stepping-stone towards a better future for herself and her son. Both students have done everything that they can to ensure that they are present and working towards their licenses. Each loves what they have learned here in the mannequin lab, theory classroom and on the salon floor and how invested the instructors are in ensuring that they are successful. Amanda had this to say, “The school wants to see you be successful. I am getting ready to be done and am sad to go on to the next chapter even though I am ready for it”. Emily Lunger has come from a slightly different background than the other students. Her desire to attend and complete the program does not come

11

THE PROGRAM IS THRIVING WITH STUDENTS EXCITED TO LEARN

from a lifelong dream or overwhelming enthusiasm for the trade. She attended Florida Gulf Coast University upon her high school graduation and decided that the university and her then program of study were not the right choice for her. After a bit of looking around at different courses in the university and other nontraditional vocational courses she decided on cosmetology. While she may have been wary on her first day of classes, she has since lost any inhibitions about the course. Emily has strived to do well in all facets of the class and embraced her newfound profession with an unrivaled gusto. Despite the ever-increasing size of the Cosmetology and newly introduced Barbering program, the instructors have managed to juggle every obstacle thrown their way. They have continued to devote their time not only to their new students, but also to their senior students, as well preparing them for anything that may come their way on the school’s salon floor or in the future when an instructor is no longer nearby to answer questions. MEDICAL ADMINISTRATIVE SUCCESS BY ANA LEMOS

The Medical Administrative Specialist Program offers all the training necessary to be successful in your career. This program offers virtual, hands-on, and interactive training. The instructor will prepare you for real life experiences, such as, building a complete resume, preparing you for an interview, and how to conduct yourself during this process. These components help build confidence in the student’s abilities. This ten-month long program takes real world scenarios and forms them into active learning tools. With smaller classes, it helps create an open learning environment as well as a positive work space. Group activities range from classroom projects, to open discussions, which in turn equates to a higher success rate among students. During any given class day, students can expect to be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, such as answering the telephone, listening to and prioritizing messages, and building and filing paper charts. These are just some multitasking skills that students can expect to learn while adapting to a fastpaced learning environment. This course also features medical programs such as Medisoft, Practice Partner/Electronic Health Record, and virtual administrative skills. Some of the tasks you will learn are how to create patient records, import health history and interpreting patient files. Students will become proficient in the latest versions

of Microsoft Word; Excel; PowerPoint to achieve Microsoft Specialist Certifications. Other certifications include but are not limited to; Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) as well as Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) upon completion. This establishes that individuals are well trained and knowledgeable in the medical field, and can be held to a higher standard. This course requires a volunteer program at a medical facility of the student's choosing, which will help gain real work field experience. This program is a great way to gain medical knowledge, interact with others, and overall successfully complete your personal portfolio. The instructor, Ms. Lemos, is a former student from Cape Coral Technical College and the ultimate success story. She graduated from this program and later went on to work in a nationally-based dermatology office, where she continued her career and became a Location Manager. Ms. Lemos continuously strives to maintain up to date medical office knowledge, by bringing her experience from the work field into the classroom and building her classroom to resemble a real life working office environment. Ms. Lemos says “My ultimate goal is to make sure all students leave prepared for a successful career.”

..... HOSPITALITY

CULINARY CARVING

BY LAUREN ROLSTON & DARLING CATALAN

Last month our students enjoyed a special treat, a brunch buffet. Everything on the buffet was made from scratch by Cape Coral Technical College’s Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts students. There were scrambled eggs, eggs benedict, waffles, all kinds of pastries, every kind of fruit, bacon, sausage, and so much more! The oatmeal was made by a student, Nydia Concepcion-Cruz, from an old family recipe. The reason behind this yearly brunch is because we have our Council on Occupational Education breakfast that day. At that breakfast, our instructors meet with those working in their field and hiring people just like our students. These are our program advisory members. Our school gets to find out what the employers' needs are and what they need the students to be trained in. The breakfast/brunch that the culinary students host serves multiple functions. First of all, it gives back to the business people who take time to be COE program advisory members. Secondly, it gives Chef Jack Elias, our culinary arts instructor, an opportunity to train the students for these type of large events. Besides cooking, they learned about setting up the buffet tables, a beverage station, a carving station, and chaffing dishes. They polished glasses and flatware, put skirting around tables, and created fruit and pastry displays. They

learned how important every little detail is. Lastly, this amazing breakfast food is used to feed our students and staff. The pièce de résistance of the buffet was the stunning ice sculpture. I was shocked to hear some people thought the school had purchased it and someone even thought it was plastic! Well it was not. It was as real as the ice in your sodas and somebody actually made that. That’s right, the ice sculpture that we have each year comes from our Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts class.

Have you ever wondered how those beautiful ice sculptures are made? It takes creativity, talent, skill, and strength to turn a block of ice into an amazing work of art. Not many people can do that. However, our own Chef Jack can. That’s right Chef Jack carved that magnificent piece of artwork. Every year he carves one for the COE breakfast. The students can watch and are invited to try their hand in carving the sculpture as well. It is all part of the learning experience. First, Chef Jack orders a block of tempered ice and gets his chain saws ready. To most of us, the block of ice looks like a rectangle, but Chef Jack sees something in there. Maybe it’s an eagle or a swan. This year it was a fish and underwater plants. Without anything but picture in his mind, starts up his chainsaw and cuts into the block. He cuts out a giant triangle and then makes a few slices. It’s a mystery to everyone but Chef, as to what will come of this. Each year, Chef Jack surprises us with a new ice sculpture for the COE breakfast. The culinary students have the opportunity to get involved and try their hand in sculpting. Only a few are brave enough! Last year, Evan Brauer tried it. This year, Dezarey Johnson did. Chef Jack and Dezeray created a beautiful center piece! And that is where our ice sculpture came from. MY HURRICANE IRMA EXPERIENCE BY CHRISTOPHER DESHIELDS

“It shouldn’t be a big deal. I will be fine.” That’s what I kept telling myself after my dad told me that Irma had a possibility of striking Cape Coral, Florida. I hadn’t been through a hurricane in several years and the ones I had been through were pretty small. I couldn’t say the same about Hurricane Irma. Unfortunately, my father was correct and it was headed towards the west coast of Florida, where we live. As the storm blew closer, everyone began to prepare for the storm. At Cape Coral Technical College, my Digital Design class covered up all our computers with bags and photographed all the equipment in the room, in case of any destruction or flooding. At home, my sister and I helped out my parents by bringing in anything that could potentially blow away and helped in the installation of the shutters on the windows and doors. The most difficult part of this whole experience was the fact that we had to go to a shelter one day before the hurricane was set to hit. The shelter was at Ray V. Pottorf Elementary. Driving to the school

19

WINTER/SPRING 2018

wasn’t an issue but getting inside was troublesome. My mom and I are disabled, so I expected things to move quickly, but that was not the case. We waited our turn in line, for what seemed to be forever. When it was our turn to go in, we were directed to a room with several other people and families. The “beds” provided by the shelter were simply cots with a thin layer of foam on top. I had to sleep on the hard floor for half of the night before getting a turn on the cot, which was a challenge. The constant snoring at night also made it hard for me to fall asleep. Additionally, the food that they supplied us with was awful. Another inconvenience was the restrooms that were especially uncomfortable for someone of my stature, as the sinks were clearly designed for children. Hurricane Irma made landfall on September 10, 2017 and lasted most of the afternoon and night. My tablet kept me busy during the storm and helped me pass the time. The lack of windows in the room I was in made the sounds of the storm almost unnoticeable. Therefore, I wasn’t worried and I felt very safe.

Finally, on September 11, 2017, it was time to head home. When we got back we had no electricity, but on the bright side we had no property damage. Thankfully, we had a generator and that got us through until we got power back on the 13th. While Hurricane Irma didn’t damage my home, it wasn’t quite the same for others. Flooding and high winds damaged much of the Naples and Bonita Springs area. Signs were blown out and trees were uprooted all along the path of the storm. Due to the damage to many schools and the lack of electricity, Cape Coral Technical College and all Lee County Schools were closed for 2 weeks. Cleanup and debris removal took months and our community is just now getting back to normalcy. I hope that I never have to go through another storm like this again!
