She volunteers in her school’s Key Club and is an aspiring biomedical engineer. “I’ve helped kids from the Sand Creek Middle School on math and science. I want them to get excited for the classes they’ll take in high school,” Lauren said. Lauren won first place and earned a $1,000 CertifiKID.* Sarah Mead is a senior at South Colonie High School. She volunteers with a local Girl Scout troop. She recently helped the troop earn a badge. “Volunteering to lead Girl Scouts has shown me how to step up and take charge,” Sarah said. Sarah earned second place and won a $500 CertifiKID.*

Kate Ryan is a junior at Bethlehem Central High School. She recently took a volunteer trip to Virginia with a church-sponsored high school youth group. “One lady I met needed companionship as much as help with home repair. It was great to give something back,” Kate said. Kate earned third place and won a $300 CertifiKID.* 2012 Nominations Awards are made based on nominations from family, teachers and friends. Warmth of Wine

The Foundation was again a sponsor of the Warmth of Wine fundraiser for the Colonie Senior Services Center in early March. The event raised more than $40,000 to support the Center’s Umbrella Program of Colonie, which helps local senior citizens cover home heating costs. More than 375 people, including CAP COM volunteers, gathered at The Century House to support this important local charity.

Bowl-a-thon

Art Goedeke Memorial Scholarship LaSalle Institute graduate and Northeastern University student Thomas E. Hulihan V is the 2011 winner of the Art Goedeke Scholarship. The late Art Goedeke was a longtime Credit Union member with a passion for computer science and information technology. The Goedeke family set up a $2,000 scholarship to help students with similar career aspirations. Thomas wrote an essay about the ethical use of personal information stored on social networking sites like Facebook. Thomas is pursing an undergraduate degree in computer science. Thomas became a member several years ago when his grandmother and longtime Credit Union Member, Mary Smulsky, opened his Youth Account.

CAP COM staff and volunteers got their bowling shoes on for the Foundation. More than 200 bowlers gathered on a Sunday in March at Uncle Sam Lanes in Troy for the Foundation Bowl-a-thon. “It was a great volunteer and staff event and we raised nearly $4,500 for the Foundation,” said Foundation Administrator Jim O’Connell.

Supporting soldiers

Children of staff and U.S. Air National Guard guardsmen assembled care packages for soldiers overseas on April 20 as part of Support our Soldiers (SOS) Program.

Gains amid volatility Navigating volatile financial markets is a cornerstone of smart investing. Taking a long-term view helps produce decisions that benefit your retirement portfolio. “At CAP COM Financial, our clients get steady advice to help them navigate market swings,” said Financial Advisor Harry Hartman.

Maintain perspective Don’t panic. Don’t sell into a rapidly declining market and don’t buy into a rapidly rising market. You’ll just be following the herd and locking in losses. You never know when the market is going to shoot up, so staying invested and not giving in to panic can really make a difference. Portfolio review Your portfolio’s mix of stocks, bonds and cash equivalents should reflect your needs. Diversify by spreading money among different investments to reduce risk.

Market-timing risk Dollar cost averaging can help reduce market-timing risk for long-term investors. By investing regular amounts at steady intervals, your cost per share will average out over time. If the market rises over the long term, expensive shares purchased at the top of one cycle will be offset by the cheaper shares bought when the market corrects. Talk with us! Call CAP COM Financial at (518) 782-0209 to set up a meeting.

This article was prepared by Standard & Poor’s and is not intended to provide specific investment advice or recommendations for any individual. Consult your financial advisor if you have any questions.

Peaks and valleys Long-term investors can handle a few market peaks and valleys. However, investors with a short time horizon should answer critical questions such as: How much can I afford to lose in the short term? Am I pursuing growth that will outpace inflation?
