Speaker KEN LYOTIER “Saint Ken” or “Forrest Gump of the Downtown Eastside”? Ken has lived for 30 years in the Downtown Eastside. Initially he lived “rough” (homeless) but he beat the odds to found one of Vancouver’s most successful non-profit businesses, United We Can. Last year, United We Can recycled 20 million beverage containers and put $2M into the hands of recyclers, employing 150 people in the process. United We Can has grown to include new ventures such as: Lane Cleaning, Bintek (computer repairs), Bikeworks and Solefood (urban agriculture). Ken’s vision includes employing people

The New Westminster Homelessness Coalition is proud to introduce I’s On The Street. I’s On The Street is an award winning cleaning service which employs eight people from New Westminster who are either homeless or, live with a mental illness.

Christina Toth is an Assistant Branch Manager with the New Westminster and Kruger Mill Community Branches. Vancity is a strong supporter of Homelessness Action Week in many of its branches and the New Westminster Community Branch is especially pleased to host a clothing drive, donate branch space for Artwork supporting the Action Week and providing staff volunteers.

Louise Perry, Branch Manager of the New Westminster branch is actively involved with several community groups including the New Westminster Homelessness Coalition, The Rotary Club of New Westminster and the New Westminster Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society.
