President’s Message Welcome to the 79th Canungra Show and for the first time, to the Canungra Hotel Rodeo, both on one big weekend. Its been a tough year for Canungra and its districts. The severe rain event in late March and early April saw 20 homes flooded and 81 homes damaged, with multiple landslips and flooding hitting fences, roads, bridges and creek crossings. The town was isolated at the height of the rain and many more properties stayed that way for days and in some cases weeks, as the rescue crews worked their way along the valleys. For the Show Society and the Canungra Sports and Recreation Association (which manages the Canungra Showground), it meant digging out the rodeo arena where the creek came over it and buried the yards and fences, then restoring the surface to NRA competition standards. It was a sad decision the day before to reschedule when the arena stayed too wet for safe competition the next day. It’s a country strength that enables good things to be brought out of hard times, and the difficult choices we have had to make this year have given us the opportunity to run our first two day event over one weekend, with expected benefits for both visitors and community businesses. The Show on Saturday 26th of August and the Rodeo starting early the very next day on 27th August should keep visitors from town, district and Brisbane and the Gold Coast entertained to the max. We aim for continual improvement in our events, so we are holding our first dark rich fruit cake competition for all those keen cooks, and offering expanded Vehicle and Machinery Display at Moriarty Park at the 2016 Canungra Show displays of cars and vintage machinery of all sorts. This year, you can book discounted tickets online and due to the postponement of the Canungra Hotel Rodeo, we have the option of a two day pass. In addition, we have left the gate prices for families and children at the same rate for the last six years, making our events great value for everyone. As always, my gratitude goes to the committee members and volunteers who do such an enormous amount of work right through the year to run these events. To our sponsors, whose generosity and loyalty make it possible for us to stage the rodeo and the show every year, I offer sincere thanks and the hope that together, we will continue to bring to our community quality, affordable entertainment and provide ongoing support for local enterprises and Canungra’s many volunteer clubs and organisations. Entering in the Show By Carol Mahony The Canungra Show has two Pavilions – the Fine Arts Pavilion and the Main Pavilion. We have around 1000 entries each year and invite everyone to start exhibiting. The Fine Arts Pavilion is located at Moriarty Park Hall and is where entries for paintings, drawings, wood work are taken. The Main Pavilion is for Junior entries, cooking, needlework and photography. Check the schedule for details of classes.

Entering in the show is very easy. The most important thing about entering is to read the classes carefully. Entries are judged on a certain criteria which are uniform across all shows. Present your exhibit exactly as it is stated in the schedule. For example, in the cooking section points may be deducted if you have decorated your cake to make it look pretty when in fact your cake is judged on the taste. The schedule will tell you what, if any decoration is required. If you have any questions feel free to contact the Chief Steward beforehand - their phone number is at the beginning of each section of the Program. Entries are taken from 1pm until 6.30pm on the Friday the day before the show. Simply fill out the entry form which you will find in the Show schedule or on our webpage www.canungrashowsociety.org. If you require any help we can give this to you when you bring in your entries. Judging is done on Friday night after entries close and both of the pavilions are open on Show day from 9am until 5pm. Exhibits in the Main Pavilion can be collected between 5pm and 7pm on Saturday night or by making alternative arrangments with the Chief Steward. Exhibits in the Fine Arts Pavilion at Moriarty Park can be collected on Sunday between 9.30 and 10.30am. The major prize in the Main Pavilion this year is donated by O’Reilly’s Rainforest Resort and is a night for two at the resort valued at $295.00. The prize is for the Champion Exhibitor of the Pavilion. This is awarded to the person with the most points achieved in the pavilion which covers cookery, needlework, photography, horticulture and fruit and vegetables. All first places in the senior (adult) section attract a prize of $5 for 1st and $3 for second. In the Juvenile section first prize is $3 and second is $1. The Fine Arts Pavilion also has some very worthwhile prizes. Each section also has prizes for the Most Successful Exhibitor and Champion Exhibit. There are also other special prizes for particular classes and you can see the Show Schedule for details. However, any exhibitor will tell you it is for the fun of exhibiting and not the prize. If you would like to help on Friday afternoon or night to help take entries and put up displays or can assist in the pavilions on Saturday or Sunday please contact the Chief Steward or Show Secretary prior to the Show. We will welcome anyone who would like to help.

New Classes in the Pavilion Decorated Birthday Cake (any theme) For the first time the Canungra Show is inviting competitors to enter decorated birthday cakes. Cakes can be based on any theme, from children’s cakes to elaborate cakes suitable for all ages. This is a great opportunity for our local cakemakers to get creative and show what they can do! The Juvenile clases also include decorated patty cakes for Middle and Secondary school children. It will be great to see the Pavilion’s cookery display cabinets full of colour and imaginative designs this year! For more information see the cooking classes in this program or contact the Pavilion Chief Steward.

Dark Rich Fruit Cake Competition There are several new classes in the Pavilion this year, one of which is the Dark Rich Fruit Cake competition. The winner of this competition can, if they wish, go on to represent Canungra in the Sub-Chamber (regional) Dark Rich Fruit Cake competition, the winner of which goes on to the State Final at the Ekka! This competition is a real test of skills in the art of baking a Dark Rich Fruit Cake for those who wish to maintain a heritage culture which has been renowned for generations. A set recipe is not provided - exhibitors are permitted to use their own tried and proven recipe in accordance with the Queensland Shows Rules. All the exhibits for the final must be a 500g mixture (25 1/2 cm tin) and are displayed on the Queensland Shows stand at the Royal Queensland Show. A suggested recipe is below:

DARK RICH FRUIT CAKE RECIPE INGREDIENTS

500g Sunbeam raisins 500g Sunbeam sultanas 500g Sunbeam currants 125g mixed peel 125g cherries 2 cups brown sugar

2 cups butter 12 eggs 3 cups plain flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 125g almonds 1 teaspoon mixed spice

1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon lemon essence 1 tablespoon syrup 1 tablespoon (small) plum jam 1 cup rum or brandy

METHOD Soak fruit in rum or brandy overnight. Beat butter and sugar to a cream, add eggs (which have been beaten), add sifted flour, baking powder, spice, salt and a cup of prepared flour mixture, then fold in the fruit. Add a little more flour if it is necessary. If too stiff, add 1/2 cup orange juice. Place the mixture in a prepared cake tin 251⁄2 cm square. Bake in a slow oven (130°C-140°C) for approx. 5-6 hours or until cooked when tested. Allow the cake to cool in the tin.

The Canungra Show - 79 years on... First run in 1938, the Canungra Show is an important social event in the community and assists to bind the residents of the region together. It is run and organised entirely by a small band of volunteers who work throughout the year to put together one day of entertainment for the community. In 1938, a group of Canungra locals came together to form the Canungra Agricultural, Horticultural and Industrial Society with a common goal of holding the first Canungra Show. A 440 yard ring had been erected in 1937 and a combined sports and show day held on 5 November that year, however the first Show was so enthusiastically supported by the community that a pavilion was built, dressing shed upgraded and members of the community rallied to assist in the running of the Show. Arthur Caswell, the founding President, was instrumental in getting this first show up and running and he remained President of the Society until 1954. In 1939 the Show was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II and Australia’s immediate involvement. Although the Show continued in 1940 and 1941, with profits shared between the Show Society and the Patriotic Funds, all Shows and sports were abandoned for the remainder of the war. In 1946, with the district beginning to recover from the ravages of the war years, another successful Show was held. Since then, the Shows have continued annually, although the events and entertainment have changed to reflect changes in the community. Of course the Photography, Produce, Cookery, Art and Crafts displayed in the Fine Arts Pavilion remain a focal point of the Show. Competitors take great pride in their creations and these Sections are always well represented by the locals, giving people the opportunity to showcase talents which might otherwise be hidden at home! A list of competitors and office bearers of the Show Society through the years reads as a ‘who’s who’ of the district. Families such as the Corcoran’s, Finches, Caswell’s, Lawler’s, Benstead’s, Mahony’s, Bradfield’s, Moriarty’s and Lawson’s, to name a few (please don’t be offended - we couldn’t list everyone!) have been instrumental in keeping this great Australian tradition alive in Canungra over the years. Today it is a mix of new families and representatives of the older families who run the Show Society. In the early years of the Show, the Cattle Sections were well contested, however the main focus was on dairy cattle: AIS, Jersey and later Guernseys, Friesians, Ayrshires. The Stud Beef Cattle Section was introduced in 1982, abandoned in 1997, but reintroduced for the 60th Anniversary of the Show in 1998. It remains a competitive Section to this day. Page 36

2017 Canungra Show

The Canungra Show - 79 years on ... e Horse Sections have increased with the growth of the region as an equine recreational hub. From Th miniatures to thoroughbreds, the Horse Sections are always popular and draw both local competitors and those from around South-East Queensland. In 2008, the Draught Horse and Plough Horse Categories have been phased out, replaced by a Heavy Horse Category but a myriad of breed classes have been introduced over the years including Appaloosas, Arabians, Fresians and Australian Stock Horses. In 2014, the Fine Arts Pavilion (or ‘Possum Hut’ as it was affectionately known) was demolished due to white ants and for two years the Fine Arts were displayed in the Secretary’s Box. This meant the Fine Arts could not expand and entries were fitted into the limited space available in the Secretary’s Box. In 2016, the Show expanded into neighbouring Moriarty Park, with camel rides, Flyball for dogs and vintage machinery and cars all new features of the Show. The Fine Arts were then able to be displayed in the light and spacious Moriarty Park Hall, showing them off to full advantage and enabling the Chief Steward to promote the section to the wider community once again. Next year we will see the 80th running of the Canungra Show - plans are underway already for an expanded program and a few surprises!
