Are You Cybersecurity Aware? S

eptember is always a time of change for most households around the country. Families are getting back into regular routines at home and work with the start of school and putting summer activities on hold until next year. The carefree life on the Cape or the Connecticut shoreline is but a memory. The reality of everyday life has returned. This month is a perfect time to become cyber security aware and ensure that everyone’s online practices and home network and devices are safe and secure. The Canton Chamber of Commerce is focusing on cyber security this month by sharing valuable information with local residents and business owners. Our Education Committee will present a free public CyberSecurity seminar on September 25th with a panel of experts available to ensure that you can protect yourself, your children, and your business from cyber threats. We are in the middle of a world-wide security storm. Thieves have deployed every technology they can think of to capture our data and steal our money. We are spending billions per month to protect ourselves from the thieves. the day, month and year of their births, share the name of their high school, first pet, car, etc. How much more does a criminal need to open a new bank account, crack passwords or answer challenge questions on existing accounts? Socially, humans are easily engineered, and fraudsters are always perfecting their techniques, coming up with better ways to fool consumers. In the end, it’s not so difficult. Consumers unwittingly cough up personal details all the time, and fraudsters are all too quick to use that information to their advantage.

Personal Cyber Housekeeping Now is a perfect time to perform some housekeeping of your Internet data. When you start to think about all the services that have your personal data, it gets overwhelming. Anyone that has been using the Internet for a while will have old abandoned email accounts, services like Evernote or DropBox, and old shopping sites that saved your credit card in case you shop there again. These accounts will sit for years before they remove your data due to inactivity. You can take a few steps right now to purging these old accounts. Find the old shopping carts you used once, and request that your data be removed. Close old email accounts. Google is a good resource to find out the procedure for finding and purging old information. What about your cell phone? You have to be aware that your cell phone knows more about you then your friends do. It knows where you’re supposed to be, it knows who you call, your conversations via voice and text, and keeps all of that data for your convenience. Now you may think that’s all in the phone, but all of that data gets replicated to the cloud by every app installed on your phone. From your phone or PC, navigate to: myactivity.google. com or www.google.com/maps/timeline. These sites will show you some of the info that Google knows about you. Again, a quick Google search will give you the directions how you can request that this data be cleared. Continued on page 4

Protecting Your Identity Identity theft increased 8 percent in 2017, impacting 16.7 million people. The Federal Trade Commission has an excellent website describing how to learn the warning signs: www.identitytheft.gov/ warning-signs-of-identity-theft. When you are an identity theft victim, you and your employer can lose out on time and engagement. If you haven’t considered coverage against such a loss, it may be time for you or your employer to look at some of the programs that are being offered. When looking at a good identity theft program, consider these three aspects: (1) Detect and Alert - Help keep identities secure with a program that will search and monitor threats to personal identities. When there is a threat, the program should have a notification through text and email. (2) Recovery - The program should save time and money… If an identity is stolen, a personal Recovery Advocate should be available to help in one of two ways, by either guiding through the recovery process, or working on the person’s behalf, and (3) Insure Against Loss – The program provider should Insure against loss. The plan should include insurance that covers expenses you may incur throughout the identity recovery process.
