10 Qualities that Strengthen a Relationship honor of Valentine’s Day, here are 10 things to consider as you Instrive to strengthen your relationship. 1. realize that longlasting love is not easy

No secrets. If you’re really in this together and you respect one another, everything should be fair game. Have a crush on someone else? Discuss it. Laugh about it. 3. build trust If something bothers you in the relationship, discuss it. Doing so builds trust, and trust builds intimacy.

Having happily-ever-after expectations can set couples up for failure. And many individuals go into relationships expecting the high they experienced at the onset of their relationship to last forever. Eventually, the high fades. And, when it’s gone, you need to know you’ve chosen to be with someone with whom you enjoy spending time and whom you genuinely respect.

When you consider the events you and your partner will encounter during your lifetimes, trust is crucial. If you learned you had cancer tomorrow, would you trust your partner to care for you? Would you trust him/her to care for your child long term? Do you trust them to handle your money and make sound decisions under pressure? Do you trust them not to blame you when you make mistakes?

February marks a time to evaluate Keep in mind that deep, unconditional love is hard, and reinforce your relationships. oftentimes because it’s not Share your insecurities with your glamorous. It requires dealing partner. It’s important to have a solid understanding of each other’s with another person’s insecurities and fears even when you’d rather insecurities and the way you each choose to compensate for them. not. 2. uphold RESPECT

And remember, if you cannot trust, you cannot be trusted. Distrust breeds distrust.

A survey of couples with long-lasting marriages, those of 20, 30 or 40 years, found that respect topped the list of requirements.

4. maintain your individuality

It’s important to hold each other in high esteem, believe in one another — and trust that your partner is doing his/her best. Never complain about your partner to friends. If you have a problem with your partner, discuss it directly with him/her. Respect that you each have different hobbies, interests, and perspectives. Respect that each person has an equal say in the relationship, that you are a team, and if one person on the team is not happy, then the team is not succeeding.

SEEING THINGS YOUR WAY

Don’t ever sacrifice the person you are for the person you’re with. It will only make you miserable. A healthy and happy relationship requires two healthy and happy individuals. That means two people with their own identities, their own interests, perspectives and friends, and things each does without the other. And remember, it is up to you to make yourself happy. Your happiness does not rest on the shoulders of your partner. Figure out, as individuals, what makes you happy, then be sure each person brings that to the relationship. Continued on page 3

One of the most important criteria that long-term couples cite for relationship success is creating space and separation from a partner. Many couples tout the benefits of separate checking accounts, separate credit cards, having different friends and hobbies, occasionally taking separate vacations. Some long-term couples even go so far as to recommend separate bathrooms and separate bedrooms.

6. embrace change

TRUCK !!

In the course of decades, some pretty serious life changes are bound to occur. When you commit to someone, you don’t actually know who you’re committing to. You know who they are today, but you have no idea who this person is going to be in 10 or 15 years. Changing religions. Changing political beliefs. Moving to a different country. The death of family members. Caring for elderly family members. You have to be prepared to embrace change.

7. hone your fighting skills A relationship is a living, breathing thing that, like muscles, grows stronger when stressed and challenged. In the course of your relationship, there’s little doubt you will fight. John Gottman is a psychologist and researcher who spent more than 30 years analyzing married couples. In one study, Gottman put married couples in a room and filmed them as they discussed an existing issue in their relationship. He then analyzed the couple’s interaction and was able to predict – with startling accuracy – whether or not the couple would eventually divorce. Gottman derived four characteristics of a couple that tended to lead to divorce (or breakups). 1. Criticizing your partner’s character (you’re so stupid vs. that thing you did was stupid). Never insult or name-call your partner. Remember the adage: hate the sin, love the sinner. 2. Defensiveness: basically, blame shifting. Saying, for example, “I wouldn’t have done that if you weren’t late all the time.” 3. Contempt: putting down your partner and making them feel inferior 4. Stonewalling: withdrawing from an argument and ignoring your partner Do not bring previous fights/arguments into current ones. This solves nothing. If things get too heated, take a breather. In marriage, there’s no such thing as winning an argument. When you’re right about something – be quiet. You can be right and be quiet at the same time. Perhaps the most interesting finding from Gottman’s research was the fact that people in lasting and happy relationships have problems that never completely go away. When an argument is over, it’s over. You have to agree not to bring it up every month for the next 20 years. There’s no scoreboard. Everything in the relationship should be given and done without expectation of reward or manipulation of feelings. When your partner makes a mistake, separate the intentions from the behavior. He or she is a good person – that’s why you choose to be with them. Finally, pick your battles wisely. Some things matter and are worth getting upset about. Most are not. 9. Realize that LITTLE THINGS matter If you don’t take the time to plan a night out, take a walk together, or meet for lunch occasionally, you may eventually find yourself living with a roommate. Staying connected through life’s ups and downs is critical. Eventually, children grow up and parents pass away. You don’t want to wake up 20 years from now and find yourself in a room with a stranger because life got hectic. Small things as simple as inquiring about your partner’s day; holding hands while watching tv; bringing morning coffee to your spouse as he/she gets ready — these things all matter and become particularly important once kids enter the picture. 10. LEARN TO weather the storms Rest assured, there will be storms. The key to weathering those storms is to realize that they often have little to do with the quality of the relationship — people lose jobs, family members die, couples relocate, switch careers, make a lot of money, lose a lot of money. Your responsibility as a partner is simply to support the person with whom you chose to live your life. In the end, most couples can work through anything as long as they are not destroying themselves or each other – emotionally, physically, financially, or spiritually. Write down the reasons you fell in love and committed to be together and read it every year on your anniversary or on this Valentine’s Day.
