Titans takeover Giving Tree tradition By Jacob Miller Takeovers of other IPS high schools have brought programs to Tech High School in the past and now students, faculty and community members are taking on a new tradition. “The Giving Tree was operated at Manual High School for over 10 years,” said Assistant Principal David Brunsting, a former member of the Manual faculty and champion of the STAR Academy in Lone Hall. “We now have an FFA Chapter and for FFA, giving back to the community is a big thing across the country. I’m very excited.” Sonya Lord, the director of the STAR Academy, brought the Giving Tree to the Titan community as she began teaching at Tech this fall, following the Manual takeover. “We worked with the social workers to identify families that may struggle to get Christmas presents,” Brunsting said. “Then we talked to the parents to find out what their kids need.”

that they need like dress code pants, underwear and the basic hygiene products.” Lord was unable to spearhead the drive this year due to the recent death of her husband, but other faculty members stepped up to the plate. Bruce Sillery, located in Rm. 545 of Morgan Hall, took on the task of running the program this year. The FFA students at Tech who run the Giving Tree program will host a wrapping party after all of the presents have been purchased and handed back to Tech. - Assistant Principal David Brunsting “If you can’t afford to get a gift, even wrapping paper and tape will help out,” Brunstpick up before Christmas. ing said. “We have 66 items on the tree and “Moving to a new school can be that means we have the opportunity for at least 66 people to get inhard,” he said about moving to Tech five years ago after working at volved,” Brunsting said. “I think that at this school, we respond in a big Manual for over 16 years. “But tradiway,” said Brunsting. “These families tions like the Giving Tree can really aren’t asking for crazy expensive make everyone feel at home and feel things. They are asking for the things like a part of the Tech family.” Paper ornaments with the anonymous students’ wishlists were then hung on two separate Giving Trees located in Lone Hall and in the Arsenal. Students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and neighbors of Tech are all invited to take an ornament from the tree and then purchase the items on the list. The items must all be purchased and returned to Tech by Dec. 17, so that they can be wrapped in time for delivery to for the parents to

Dreams come true for Technicians with Disney World performance By Charles Gates After performing at the Circle of Lights last year and with Encore Vocal Arts at the beginning of this year at the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, the Technicians and the Techoir now has the opportunity to perform at Disney World over Spring Break 2013. Techoir and Technicians singers were given this opportunity after auditioning by submitting a detailed application with two DVDs of performances, two CDs of vocals, and six group photographs. They were chosen out of the other choirs that auditioned, some from all over the world. They are scheduled to depart March 31 and return to Indianapolis April 6. The Techoir and the Technicians need to raise $39,728 dollars to cover admittance to the parks, transportation, room and board plus any additional costs. “I want to give my kids the opportunity to perform at the world’s most famous stage,” said Cynthia Hart-

shorn, director of the Technicians and coordinator of the trip, She said that the Technicians will be performing selections of oldies but goodies, pop hits, and musical selections while the Techoir will perform Concert Literature Style music. For some choir members, this is their first time to visit the Magic Kingdom. "I was so happy because I have always wanted to go but I didn't have the expenses to go," said Phillip Carroll, a sophomore that has been in the Technicians and the Techoir for two years. To help raise money for the trip, the music department sponsored a show Dec. 11 called "Christmas Extravaganza" in the auditorium of Englewood Christian Church. Techoir and Technicians are also offering their talents to business and organizations for holiday gatherings. For more information on the trip or to help, contact Harshorn at 693-5328 or 627-9567.
