8 CANMORE'SMININGHERITAGE 25 UNIONHALLDESK ThisdeskisoneofseveralartifactstheoncebelongedtotheUnitedMineWorkersof America,Local1387(re organizedasLocal7297inthemid 1930s). Inthecollectionalso areanumberofstampsandthearchivalfondsoftheUnion;thericharchivalfondsfor theUnioncanbeexploredontheCanmoreMuseumwebsite. The United Mine Workers of America, Local 1387 (Canmore) formed in 1905 after miners organized to improve safety, working conditions, and wages. At the time, they worked12hoursaday,sixdaysaweekfor$1 25ashiftwithfewbenefits Oncetheunionhadorganized,itsmembersbegan meetinginasmallhallonMineside,theareaof CanmoreonthesouthwestsideoftheBowRiver wherethecoalminesoperated;however,themine ownersevictedtheunionduringastrikein1907.Asa result,theunionexecutivebeganmeetinginashack neartherailwaystationwithaneyetowardsbuilding apermanentheadquarters Withtheminersvolunteeringtheirtimeandlabour, theconstructionoftheUnionHallbetween1910and 1913providedtheexecutiveofLocal1387aplaceto workandtomeet. WHAT'SNEXTFORTHEUNIONHALL?
Aftertheminesclosedin1979,theUnionHallfell intodisrepairandintheearly1980s,theTown considereddemolishingthebuildingtocreatea parkinglot thiswasbeforethreehousesthat facedSeventhStreetandabarbershopwere demolishedtocreateparking.Instead,PineTree Players,whichhadbeenusingtheUnionHallto mountproductionssince1978,alongwiththe RedBarnCommittee,sawadifferentpath. By1982,thetwoorganizationsraised$105,000, whichincludedaCanadaManpowergrant,to renovateandrefurbishthebuildingandgive itnewlife.AlbertaPremierPeterLougheed reopenedtheUnionHallonJuly1,1983asa communitycentre.
