GREGORY VIJAYENDRAN President, Law Society of Singapore Gregory presently serves as President of the Law Society of Singapore. MODERATOR PROFILE EDMUND BON Head of Chambers, AmerBon Advocates
Edmund is frequently consulted by private clients, multi-national companies, the Malaysian Bar Council, public authorities, and governmental bodies on legal issues and law reform. He is also Malaysia's representative to the Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR). He was previously a 5-time elected member of the Malaysian Bar Council and chaired the Constitutional Law (2009-2011), Human Rights (2007-2009) and National Young Lawyers’ (2006-2008) committees. After a break of five years, Edmund recently stood for election and was elected to the Bar Council for the term of 2016-2017. In 2008, Edmund was appointed to advise a Chief Minister and State Government and since then has been dealing with – both as a contract negotiator and litigator – major issues pertaining to the management of State resources. Edmund is regularly invited to speak at local and international conferences on constitutional law and other matters of law, and on human rights advocacy. He has conducted more than 900 hours of training for young lawyers and activists on similar topics. His articles and papers have been published in law journals and by news media. Edmund’s latest published work is in the Halsbury’s Laws of Malaysia, entitled “Citizenship, Immigration, National Security and the Police”.
SPEAKER PROFILE KAREN CHEAH Chairperson, Ad Hoc Committee on Amendments to the LPA
Karen Cheah is a Partner at Chooi & Company + Cheang & Ariff (CCA) and is currently an office bearer of the Malaysian Bar Council. She was also the past Honorary Secretary and Treasurer of the Malaysian Bar and was awarded the ATC Outstanding Alumni Award in 2016. Karen is currently the Chairperson of the Ad Hoc Committee for Amendments to the Legal Professional Act and a member of the Institutional and Law Reform Committee, Child Rights Committee, Trades in Liberalisation of Services, and Finance Committee; under the Malaysian Bar Council. Karen was a speaker at the University of London Alumni Debate on the topic ‘Arbitration is not about just settlement, it is just about settlement’ in 2017. She also spoke at the Trilateral Regulatory Exchange Programme 2017 organised by Bank Negara Malaysia on the topic of how lawyers comply with AML/CFT regulatory requirements, challenges and compliances. In 2016, she was a presenter on the topic of ‘Technology & the Legal Profession’ at the International Malaysian Law Conference. She regularly speaks at seminars, forums and conferences domestically and on international platforms.
NOEMIE ALINTISSARMOONEY Manager, Future Law Innovation Programme (FLIP) Noemie is a passionate commercial strategist, bringing over 13 years of international business development experience, including 10 years in South-East Asia. Noemie is a technology & innovation enthusiast and currently leads FLIP by the Singapore Academy of Law, an industry-wide innovation initiative aiming to encourage technology adoption, catalyse innovation, and develop new business models for the delivery of legal services in the future economy. Charya Rabindra is the President of IRLA and also the CEO and Co-Founder of Lawble, a pioneer company in the Regulatory Technology (Regtech) industry in Indonesia. Charya was previously an investment banker at Helios Capital Asia. His interest in legal and compliance matters began as he served in the capacity of Head of Operational Division II at the Indonesia Securities Investor Protection Fund (Indonesia SIPF), a subsidiary of the Indonesia Stock Exchange. Armed with his experience from working in the department of Capital Market & Financial Transactions, Charya then moved on to serve as Legal Counsel in UangTeman, a fintech company that provides short term loans to businesses and consumers. Charya graduated from Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indonesia) in cooperation with University of Groningen (Netherlands) in 2009, majoring in Accounting and International Business (dual degree program). A seasoned Legal Technology veteran of over 10 years, Jason Lim has worked with many users on both sides of the technology divide, a divide which he feels strongly must be removed in order for legal firms and corporate legal departments to fully leverage on technology to better their service offerings. Trained as an engineer, his early days involved getting his hands dirty implementing and supporting legal solutions for law firms across Asia. He then moved on to a solution consulting role and then to solution sales. Lawyer, partner at the international law firm YELLAW, and Ph.D in private international law, Céline is today at the heart of her firm’s FinTech department. For many years, Céline has also been a lecturer in Lyon’s University. Sure the LegalTech is the new best way to bring legal support to companies, she is one of the founding member of Dodo Bank in 2017 and today she is running YELLAW blockchain’s department. Céline is well-known for her knowledge in blockchain’s legal issues. She regularly participates in national and international conferences as a speaker, she collaborates in these issues’ debates and she writes articles.
She believes lawyers have indeed a central place in this new ecosystem as neither the general public nor political and legal institutions are at ease with the blockchain and its specificities. He is also Co-Founder of RHT Compliance Solutions, a dedicated regulatory compliance consultancy based in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.
