için yeni bir çizgiye evrildi. Bana kalýrsa Türkiye zamanýn ruhunu yakalamýþ durumda. Birlikte daha da fazlasýný yapabiliriz. Özel sektör bu konuda güçlerini birleþtirdi. Japon teknolojisi ve sermayesi ile Türkiye nin baðlantýlarý ve yerel bilgisi bir araya geldi. Astana ve Dubai deki havaalanlarýný yaptýk, ortak giriþimlerin haddi hesabý yok. Ancak her þeye raðmen iþbirliði potansiyelimizin fersah fersah uzaðýndayýz. Ýki ülke de bölgesel güç olma amacýnda ancak çabalarýmýz son derece zayýf. Türkiye ve Japonya rakip deðil. Dünyanýn birçok sorunuyla ilgili, örneðin Ýran ýn nükleer problemi, Ortadoðu barýþý, Irak, Afganistan, Pakistan ya da Balkanlar konularýnda ayný bakýþ açýsýný paylaþýyoruz. Bütün bu konularda aþaðý yukarý ayný yaklaþýmlarý sergiliyoruz. Þu ana dek Güvenlik Konseyi ndeki baþarýlý eþgüdüm ve iþbirliðimizin nedeni de bu olsa gerek. Bu iki ülke neden el ele vermesin ki? Türkiye yi nasýl görüyorsunuz? Burasý büyüleyici ve þaþýrtýcý bir ülke. Ýki medeniyet burada birbirine karýþýyor. Türkiye iki büyük medeniyetin tam kavþaðýnda yer alýyor. Burasý; Hýristiyan Avrupa uygarlýðý ve temelde Ortadoðu ya dayanan Ýslam uygarlýðýnýn kesiþim noktasý. Türkiye nin iki yüzü var. Burada hep iki düþünce okulu, iki tür insan ve iki deðiþik zihniyet var oldu. Sizce bunlar uyum içinde yaþýyor mu? Hayýr, ulusal oydaþma eksik, her daim çatýþmaya neden oldu bu iki yapý. Japonya da her zaman her türlü konuda ulusal oydaþma bulunur. Burada ise bu akýmlarýn varlýðýný görmek büyüleyici. Sizin her konuda iki farklý yüzünüz var. Son derece ilginç bir þey bu. Kafa karýþtýrýcý da deðil mi? Ýlk baþlarda evet, ancak bu durumun nedenlerini anlamaya, teker teker verileri analiz etmeye baþladýðýnýzda her þey berraklaþýyor. Þu an Türkiye de neler olup bittiði konusunda kafam son derece net. Ýnsanlar birçok konuda aðzý sýký davransalarda olup bitenleri görebiliyorum. Bunun dýþýnda bu ülke güzel ve insanlar son derece misafirperver, enerjik, çalýþkan ve özverili. Burada yaþamak oldukça rahat. Toyota dan arkadaþlarým Adapazarý nda üretilen araçlarýn bütün Avrupa nýn en iyisi olduðunu söylerler. Uygun eðitim almýþ Türklerin kabiliyetleri inanýlmaz, ancak Türk insaný ne hikmetse bu yeteneklerini hep son dakikada ortaya koyma eðiliminde. Mesela, Ýstanbul Su Forumu nun yapýlacaðý yeri ziyaret etmiþtim forumdan birkaç hafta önce, tam bir þantiye halindeydi. Zamanýnda bitirilemeyeceði konusunda þüphem yoktu ama bitirildi. Türk insanýnýn baþarý kapasitesi akýl almaz. Tek sorun Türkleri nasýl motive etmek gerektiðini bilmek. Eski Meksika elçisi bir keresinde, ülkesinde aynen burada olduðu gibi uzun vadeli planlama yapamadýklarýný, her þeyin son dakikada yetiþtirilebildiðini ama hep bir eksik

Pacific islands. Turkey is also a member of the Kyoto Protocol, which shows rising awareness on environmental issues. Turkish foreign policy used to be Europe- and US-centered, but now under the AKP, you campaign a foreign policy to reach out all around the region and more, trying to reduce the problems to zero. I think you are now trying to catch up with the momentum. So, together, we could do a lot more. The private sector has already put together their resources; Japanese technology and capital and Turkish connections and local knowledge. We jointly created Astana airport or Dubai s, there are lots of examples of joint ventures. However, we are far short of our potential in terms of cooperation. Both countries are trying to be regional powers and yet what we are doing is minimal. Turkey and Japan are not rivals, we share the same perceptions about almost all the issues in the world, be it the Iranian nuclear issue, Middle Eastern peace, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Balkan issues. On all these we share more or less the same approach. That is why our coordination and cooperation in the Security Council has been very good so far. So why shouldn t these two countries collaborate? Now I want to turn to the lighter side of the conversation. How do you see Turkey? This country is fascinating and amazing. Two civilizations are merging here. Turkey is at the crossroads. It is the meeting point of two great civilizations; ChristianEuropean civilization, and Islamic, basically Middle Eastern civilization. Turkey has both faces. You always have two schools of thought, two kinds of people, two mentalities. Do you think they live in harmony? No. They have been confrontational, there is no national consensus. In Japan, national consensus is always there, one way or the other. It is fascinating to see these currents paring, because you have two faces with regard to everything. It is very interesting. Is it not also confusing? At first it was. But if you start to understand why it is so, analyze one by one then one day you see things clearly. Now I m quite clear about what is going about in Turkey. Even though people s lips are tightly sealed on many issues, I could see what is going on. Besides, the countryside is beautiful and Turkish people are very hospitable, energetic, very hardworking and very devoted. I think it is comfortable to live here. My Toyota friends told me that Toyota cars produced here in Adapazarý are the best in Europe. Turkish people, if they have proper training, have great capability. But, usually Turkish people
