Appeals Requests for appeals of decisions of the College, specifically regarding code of conduct disciplinary issues, are directed to the Vice President for Student Affairs. Requests for appeals shall be made in writing within two business days of the written decision. This appeals process is outlined in the Canisius College Community Standards (Appendix C-4. Hearing Procedures-E. Appeals). Violations of Team Rules Team rules may be developed by the coaching staff or team members. These rules may be more restrictive than Athletic Department, Canisius College, Athletic Conference or NCAA rules. Team rules must be reviewed by the coaching staff, student-athletes, and respective supervisors each fall. The head coach of each sport has the authority to suspend any student-athlete on his/her team if the student-athlete violates team rules in combination with or separate from proceedings under the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct. A student-athlete so suspended may appeal those decisions under the appeal and hearing process that is outlined below. Discipline Appeal Board & Hearing Process for Student-Athletes Student-athletes are entitled to appeal decisions made by head coaches when the student-athlete is determined to be in violation of team rules and/or athletic department policies and/or the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct. Below are the steps in the appeal process and other information regarding an appeal. 1. Student-athlete must first meet with the sport supervisor to informally discuss the decision being appealed. Most cases involving team rules should be resolved at this level. 2. If no satisfactory resolution can be reached through this informal procedure, and if the student-athlete believes the decision to be arbitrary or inconsistent with prior decisions, the student-athlete may, within two weeks of the meeting with the sport supervisor, request a more formal appeal in writing. This written appeal request must be sent to the Athletic Director. The appeal is then presided over by three representatives from the Intercollegiate Athletics Board (IAB), including the faculty athletic representative and athletic director. Only one member of the athletic department may be a member of the appeal committee. 3. The three-person appeal committee may choose to render a decision themselves or they may choose to include other campus staff members, faculty members, and/or students on the appeal committee as appropriate for the specific decision being appealed. 4. The appeals committee will hear the student-athlete’s appeal within 30 days. In reaching a decision, the appeals committee may interview the student-athlete, coaching staff, sport supervisor, and/or others involved in the decision being appealed. 5. The appeals committee will provide the student-athlete and others who might be involved in the appeal with a document describing the procedures applicable to the appeals committee. 6. The finding of the appeals committee shall be final and binding. Individual or Sport Initiation Activities: Hazing Initiation practices, like an orientation, are designed to help new members become part of a group. Initiation practices that humiliate, demean, or intimidate, constitute hazing. Hazing takes various form, including endangering the physical or mental health of an individual. Hazing often involves pressure to drink alcohol or other beverages, sometimes in dangerous amounts. Being hazed is serious and can have a significant effect on one’s physical and emotional health. Hazing, in any form, will not be tolerated at Canisius College. Hazing is a violation of the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct, Canisius College Community Standards and New York State law.
